B’kitzur, I strongly urge everyone to listen to the YY audio of the Yabloner Rebbe, as well as to the 18forty podcast linked above, and the actual presentation of Reb Pini Dunner as well, it’s phenomenal. א פרייליכין פסח שני!!

The following edition of Yahrtzeit Yomi featuring Maran HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZTL is dedicated as a זכות for the protection, safety and well-being of אחינו בני ישראל. עם ישראל חי!! Yahrtzeit Yomi #806!! ג חשון Harav Ovadia Yosef רב עובדיה יוסף ב״ר יעקב ראשון לציון (1920 - 2013) Maran HaRav Ovadiah Yosef ZTL, ג׳ חשון Today, 3 Cheshvan, marks the 10th yahrtzeit of Maran Harav Ovadia Yosef ZTL, the revered Gaon and Posek, who restored the Crown of Sephardic Jewry to its former glory. He had a mind big enough to master all of Torah. A spirit big enough to lead his beloved people. And a heart big enough to contain all of Klal Yisroel. The brilliant Gaon was an unyielding warrior for Torah. As a young Rabbi in Cairo, he courageously stood firm for Halacha - even as a gun was pointed at his head. In the early days of the State of Israel, he struggled to bring his Sephardic brethren back to the magnificent Torah traditions that many were abandoning with terrifying haste. Maran’s encyclopedic knowledge was breathtaking and unparalleled. In his scores of brilliant sefarim, he “restored the Crown to its Glory“, fighting the battles of Torah and maintaining the preeminence of Maran Beit Yosef. As unyielding as Maran was in defense of Torah, so was he compassionate in personal encounters. He loved all Jews, and they loved him. He was a loving father to all those in distress, and the main address for the thorniest of problems facing his brethren. *Perhaps the story that best captures Maran’s dedication to those in need is one that occurred approximately 14 years prior to his passing: Maran wasn’t feeling well one day, and his son Rav David and R’ Aryeh Deri took him to the hospital to be examined. The doctors determined that he had suffered a heart attack, and they told him that he needed an emergency stent procedure to open his arteries. ״אני צריך לחזור הביתה שלש שעות״, “I need to go home for three hours”, was Maran’s immediate reply. “Then I’ll return for the procedure.” Rav David and R’ Aryeh were concerned that the delay would be dangerous, and they tried to dissuade him from leaving the hospital. “Why does the Rav need three hours?” R’ Aryeh asked. “I’m not sure that I’ll come out of this procedure alive,” Maran explained, “and I’m in the middle of writing a teshuva to free an aguna. If I don’t finish writing the teshuva, who will take responsibility to release this woman from her loneliness?” They brought him home, and he finished writing the teshuva permitting the aguna to remarry. Only then did he return to the hospital for the lifesaving procedure!! יהי זכרו ברוך, זכותו יגן עלינו!! *This story was told by Rav David Yosef at Maran ZTL’s funeral.

Yahrtzeit Yomi #830!! כ חשון (Shabbos) Rav Mordechai Zuckerman רב מרדכי ליב ב״ר דוד נחמי׳ מאיר עיני ישראל (1910 - 2003) 20 Cheshvan (Shabbos) was the 20th yahrtzeit of Rav Mordechai Leib Zuckerman, author of Meir Einei Yisrael (1912-2003). He was born in Samagron, a city near Vilna. In 1931, he moved to Radin to learn with the Chafetz Chaim. After the petirah of the Chafetz Chaim, Rav Mordechai Leib stayed in Radin for eight more years. During the war, he arrived in the Kovna ghetto, where he acted as shamash for Rav Avraham Grodzinsky, the mashgiach of Slabodka. As Rav Avraham's talmid muvhak, he transcribed his mentor's discourses and studied with him privately bechavrusa when Rav Avraham was hospitalized. Subsequently, the Nazis burned down that hospital and Rav Mordechai Leib was the last person to have seen Rav Avraham alive. When the Nazis decided to liquidate the entire ghetto, Rav Mordechai Leib was saved by a miracle when he hid in a pit with a few others. In 1948, he moved to Yerushalayim. When he settled in Givat Shaul, he accepted the positions of rav of the Perushim shul and the head of Kollel Chevron there. He occupied those positions for over 50 years. יהי זכרו ברוך!!

Sarah Imeinu - פרשת חיי שרה
Sarah Imeinu - פרשת חיי שרה
Nov 10, 2023
3:55
Yahrtzeit Yomi #838!! פרשת חיי שרה Sarah Imeinu ״עלה במרחשון, זכות שרה אמנו שבו מתה״ (אסתר רבה ז:יא) RAV CHAIM BRISKER’S הספד ON SARAH IMEINU!! The Medrash (אסתר רבה ז:יא) tells us that when Haman drew lots to determine which date would be most auspicious to carry out his diabolical plan of genocide, he found that each month had some form of merit which would protect the Jewish people. When the lottery fell to the month of מרחשון, the Medrash says: ״זכות שרה אמנו שבו מתה״ - “The merit of שרה אמנו protected us, because she died in that month”. (Strangely, the conclusion of that same medrash is that when the lottery fell to the month of אדר, Haman rejoiced, because: ״באדר מת משה רבן״ - “Moshe Rabbeinu died in אדר”. This seems extremely perplexing - why the death of שרה אמנו is a source of merit for the Jewish people in the month of מרחשון (as Haman himself acknowledged), but the death of משה רבנו is a bad omen for the Jewish people (or at least it seemed that way to Haman) in the month of אדר…. (עיין במהרז״ו, רד״ל, ויפה ענף שם, ואכמ״ל.) In any event, as חשון is the month in which שרה אמנו passed away (פרשת חיי שרה always occurs in the month of חשון), I would like to share a beautiful explanation of a Medrash from Rav Chaim Brisker ZTL; we could even refer to this as: RAV CHAIM’S הספד ON SARAH IMEINU!! In Parashas Vayeira (בראשית כא:י), the Posuk says as follows: ״ותאמר לאברהם גרש האמה הזאת ואת בנה כי לא יירש בן האמה הזאת עם בני יצחק״ “And she said to Avraham, ‘Drive out this maidservant and her son, for this maidservant’s son shall not inherit along with my son, Yitzchak’” At the end of ספר משלי, in the famous hymn of ״אשת חיל״, we find שלמה המלך describing the valiant woman as: ״דרשה צמר ופשתים״ - “seeking out wool and linen”. The ילקוט שמעוני interprets this verse as referring to Sarah as follows: ״דרשה צמר ופשתים - בין יצחק לישמעאל, שנאמר ותאמר שרה לאברהם גרש וגו׳״ “‘Seeking out wool and linen’ - this refers to Sarah who distinguished between יצחק and ישמעאל” From where did the Medrash infer that these words allude to Sarah and her decision to disinherit ישמעאל? Says Rav Chaim Brisker, absolutely Moiradik!! - In demanding that Avraham not allow Yishmael to inherit along with Yitzchak, Sarah seems to have been causing a violation of the prohibition of transferring the rights of the firstborn son of the despised wife to the son of the beloved one - ״לא יוכל לבכר את בן אהובה״ וכו׳ (דברים כא:טז). Sarah, however, reasoned that it was permitted, for Hashem had commanded Avraham to heed whatever Sarah had said - ״כל אשר תאמר אליך שרה שמע בקולה״ (בראשית כא:יב). This constituted a מצות עשה - positive commandment, and whenever a positive commandment comes into conflict with a prohibition, the positive commandment takes precedence (מצות עשה דוחה מצות לא תעשה). The principle of מצות עשה דוחה לא תעשה is derived from the law that woolen tzitzis may be attached to a linen garment (See :יבמות ה). Though the Torah normally precludes the wearing of שטנז - clothing made from wool and linen, the positive commandment of tzitzis OVERRIDES the prohibition of שטנז. This, says Rav Chaim, is the symbolic meaning of Sarah being ״דרשה צמר ופשתים״ - “seeking out wool and linen”. Therein, she established the principle of the precedence of מצוות עשה - positive commandments over negative ones, the very principle which allowed her to insist that Yishmael be disinherited!! Have a wonderful Shabbos!!

Yahrtzeit Yomi #849!! ז כסלו Death of King Herod יום שמת הורדוס (מגילת תענית פרק ט) ------------------------------------------------------------- Shalom u’vracha Rabboisai!! Ah freilichin ז כסלו!! In light of today’s Yahrtzeit Yomi edition, I am sharing a very illuminating and insightful “Q&A” from HaRav Avigdor Miller ZTL. His approach is in complete agreement what we presented today from the Maharsha (as the editor points out at the bottom of the text)!! I found it very encouraging to learn that our Rebbi ZTL approached the topic in the same way as we had presented, and I thought that the oilam would likewise find it enlightening. זייט געבענשט!! ------------------------------------------------------------- Rav Avigdor Miller on Why We Say Half-Hallel on Pesach Q: On the last days of Pesach we say only Half-Hallel. Isn’t that because of מעשה ידי טובעים בים ואתם אומרים שירה (Megillah 10b)? Aren’t we sad that Egyptians were drowned and we therefore don’t want to sing to Hashem? A: The answer is no, it’s not because of this; it’s not because of מעשה ידי טובעים בים. There is no gemara that says that this is the reason for not saying Hallel on Pesach. I know that it’s frequently quoted and people think it’s a Gemara, but there is no Gemara to that effect. And even if you show me a medrash that says it, you’re misinterpreting the medrash. The reason why we say only half-Hallel is because there was a takana that on the first day of Pesach – for us the first two days – that we have to say Hallel. There is no reason, no takana, to say Hallel on the other days. The other days it was only a minhag to say Hallel. And therefore, because there was no takana, they couldn’t say the whole Hallel, so they said half-Hallel. Half-Hallel is only a minhag – the takana was only the first day. Now, on Sukkos the takana was to say Hallel every day, because on Sukkos every day there was a different korban tzibur brought in the Beis Hamikdash. Because every day was something new and special, like its own Yom Tov, so each day was also made special with the whole Hallel. Pesach, however, has the same korban every day and that’s the difference, that’s why we say only half-Hallel on all the other days of Pesach. But this reason that you give, you heard it from others, and I’ve heard it as well many times, but there is no real talmudic authority that says that. Maybe in some sefer it’s written, but we have a right to discount it. TAPE #26 (April 1973) (Additional sources shared on WhatsApp group) Editor’s Note: In private, the Rav told talmidim that although the reason of “maaseh yadai toiv’im ba’yam” is quoted by the Beis Yosef, the Mishna Berura and others, it is only a drush and the actual reason is the one brought in the gemara in Arachin. The Maharsha (Sanhedrin 39b) clearly says that the gemara in Arachin rejects the angel paradigm as the reason for half-Hallel. The Aruch Hashulchan (490:1) also makes note of the the fact that the actual reason is the Talmudic one as does his son in his Torah Temimah (Shemos 14:20) and many others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #884!! ו טבת Divrei Yechezkel Shineveh Rav רב יחזקאל שרגא ב״ר חיים הלברשטאם אדמו״ר משינבה (1815 - 1898) ------------------------------------------- Today, ו טבת, marks the 125th yahrtzeit of the Divrei Yechezkel, Rav Yechezkel Shraga Halberstam, ZTL, the Shineveh Rav, and eldest son of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. When contrasting the different approaches of two of his illustrious sons; Rav Yechezkel Shraga and Rav Boruch of Gorlitz (fourth son of the Sanzer Rav, the “Imrei Boruch”), the saintly Divrei Chaim would express it as follows: “My Boruch’el (Rav Boruch of Gorlitz) has such an unswerving loyalty to the truth, that he would reject an entire mountain of truth if there was even ‘ah brekeleh’ (tiny crumb) of falsehood within. “But my Chatzkel is so attached to the Dvar Hashem, that he would embrace a whole mountain of falsehood if there was even ‘ah brekeleh’ of truth within!!” There is a beautiful thought from the Divrei Yechezkel, which was quoted by Rav Meilich Biderman Shlita: In Parashas Vayigash, after revealing his true identity to the Brothers, Yosef tells them: ועתה אל תעצבו ואל יחר בעיניכם וכו׳ (בראשית מה:ה) “And now, do not be sad, nor view yourselves with anger.....” The Divrei Yechezkel brilliantly referenced the words of the Mechilta: אין ׳ועתה׳ אלא תשובה, שנאמר ועתה ישראל מה ה' אלקיך שואל מעמך' (בשלח, פרשה ה) The Mechilta tells us that the word ועתה in the Torah always refers to the process of teshuva. Consequently, says the Divrei Yechezkel, the following can be derived from what Yosef was saying: Even when one is engaged in the process of Teshuva for his many sins, even then, one should not be overly saddened. One should not be repenting from a place of sadness or bitterness in his heart. Rather, one should strengthen oneself with great joy, and in the fact that he is actually doing teshuva, because there can be no greater means of becoming closer to Hashem than through the means of heartfelt sincere repentance!! זכותו יגן עלינו!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #891!! יב טבת (Sunday) The Pnei Moshe Rav Moshe Margulies רב משה ב״ר שמעון מרגלית פני משה (1715 -1781) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Friends, the episode image is a digitized image of page 477 of a telephone-book sort of work, published in 1888 called “Aeltere Universitäts-Matrikeln; 1649-1811” by Ernst Friedländer. The book is exactly what it sounds like; endless lists of students' registration information in German universities from 1649-1811. The first volume is for the University of Frankfurt A.D. Oder. Here's what we learn: On August 11, 1779, “Moses Margelit Rubin” enrolled. His course of study was "botan." and his father was "Simon Margelit." His father's residence is Kalvarde, which could well be Kalvarija, Lithuania (which is near Kovno; in fact as close to Kovno as Keidan, where he lived when he tutored the Gra). As for the strange idea that his father's or his nationality is "Italien" (it is in the column "Heimath oder Herkunst," "Home or Descent"), this actually describes the Pnei Moshe quite accurately: in 1765 he had moved to Italy, where he remained for years. It isn't impossible to imagine him putting down Italy in his registration. As for the name "Margelit Rubin," which I don't think he is known as anywhere else, presumably it is an attempt at giving a German version of what is after all a Hebrew word for a surname, מרגלית. Now I know that it still doesn't exactly say "The author of Pnei Moshe", nor does it allude to his advanced age. Still, this is far greater evidence than a mere coincidental identical name.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #894!! טז טבת Rav Chaim Kreiswirth Rav of Antwerp רב חיים ב״ר אברהם יוסף גאב"ד אנטווערפען (1918 - 2001) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Today, 16 Teves, marks the 22nd Yahrtzeit of Rav Chaim Kreiswirth ZTL. Rav Kreiswirth was the longtime Rosh Av Beis Din in Antwerp, Belgium, and the founder and Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Merkaz HaTorah in Jerusalem. Already in his youth, Reb Chaim was renowned for his phenomenal brilliance, excellent character traits and geniality, and was dubbed the "Cracover Illui" at the young age of 15, in recognition of his prodigious powers of Talmudic analysis. Reb Chaim studied for many years in the famous Torah centers of Poland and Lithuania. Upon application to the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva, he was tested by the Rosh HaYeshiva, Rav Meir Shapiro. Rav Shapiro was duly impressed by Reb Chaim’s proficiency in all aspects of Torah. Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski as well as Rav Chanoch Henoch Eigis (both of Vilna) were very fond of him, and gave his sefer on Tractate Zevachim a warm approbation (the manuscript of which was lost during World War II). As accomplished as the Rav was in the realm of Torah Scholarship, so was he proficient in the realm of chessed and tzedakah, particularly as it pertained to the plight of young widows and orphans. Many hundreds across the globe, found tremendous financial support and relief, thanks to the untiring efforts of the ״אנטווערפען רב״ (as he was admiringly known). Rav Naftoli Jaeger Shlita, currently the famed Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Shaar Yoshuv in Far Rockaway, New York, would take note of the incredible genius of Rav Chaim; recalling how the latter would recite entire passages of the מהרשא’s commentary by heart, word for word!! It is noteworthy that Rav Chaim zl was niftar on 16 Teves; just a few hours after 15 Teves - his 83rd birthday. יהי זכרו ברוך!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059.
