ENDLESS LIGHT - Yud Shevat 5782 Special
ENDLESS LIGHT - Yud Shevat 5782 Special

1:37:50
It is an indisputable historic fact that the Rebbe’s rise came on the Wings of a Ma’amer – the delivery of an original formal Chassidic Discourse. It was on the night of Yud (the 10th day of the Hebrew month of) Shevat 5711 (1951), on occasion of the first Yahrzeit-Hilulah of the Previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson that the Rebbe formally accepted the sacred mantle of inspired leadership. For many months prior, the Rebbe had already reluctantly, yet increasingly assumed the responsibilities of the revered saintly position. Yet, he never formally acquiesced or acknowledged it. Anyone learned can deliver a scholarly address with original thoughts or insights, and the Rebbe had already shared many such ingenious and inspirational talks. Yet only a Rebbe delivers an original Ma'amer. Up until this point, despite the pleading of Chassidim, the Rebbe had consistently refused to do so. On that dramatic and historic night. Things changed. Forever. With profoundly holy fervour and soul-searing emotion the Rebbe tearfully delivered his first Ma'amer: Basi L'Gani 5711 an original formal Chassidic rumination based on the Last Ma’amer of his predecessor. Each year, on this anniversary he would deliver a new and unique rumination - based on a segment of the original Yom HaHilulah Ma’amer, Basi L’Gani. The original Ma'amer was 20 chapters long. Each year the Ma'amer would expound upon and elucidate the Torah ideas that were found in the corresponding chapter. This year we study the 12th chapter, and this presentation focuses on the Ma'amer the Rebbe delivered on Yud Shevat 5742 (1982). Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

’ ’ Part One of this special series on Ma’amer Basi L’Gani 5743 (1983), entitled "BENEATH THE DARKNESS" is called “ARMED FOR VICTORY.” The prefix (covering chapters one and two) of the Ma’amer succinctly and uniquely recapitulates the thesis of the first 12 chapters of the original Ma’amer Basi L’Gani (5710). For more about this see below.* This opening Episode sets the stage for the exciting ground-breaking mystical journey that especially focuses on the theme of chapter 13 by traveling a familiar road in revisiting the themes of the earlier chapters. Yet, much of the scenery is redrawn and previous parameters are significantly expanded and re-envisioned with an illuminating new perspective! * The Ma’amarim of Basi L’Gani, are a collection of more than 40 uniquely themed Chassidic Discourses that were delivered by The Rebbe on, or in proximity to Yud Shvat, the Yartzeit-Hilulah of his predecessor Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneerson, between the years of 5711 and 5748 (1951 – 1988). All these ruminations were directly based on Ma’amer Basi L’Gani, 5710, which was released by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok on the eve of his terrestrial passing. This [original] Ma’amer is widely regarded as the Previous Rebbe’s Last Will and Testament, and our Rebbe used its themes as guiding lights for the unique mission of our Seventh Generation [of Chabad-Lubavitch] Chassidim. Kindred in containing many common concepts or ideas, each discourse incorporates a remarkably wide range of mystical Torah teachings and always radiates with multiple novel, fresh creative insights. The original rumination contains Twenty Chapters, and for nearly four decades, annually (in orderly successive fashion) the Rebbe would elaborate on themes found in a specific chapter, by delivering one or more Ma’amarim (formal dissertations of original Chassidic Teachings) almost always opening with the Midrashic words “Basi L’Gani.” This year, 5783, we are – once again – focused on chapter thirteen. As such, the discourses of 5723 (1963) and 5743 (1983) are studied by the global Chasidic community during the Yud Shvat season.

’ ’ Part Two of this special series on Ma’amer Basi L’Gani 5743 (1983), entitled "BENEATH THE DARKNESS" is called “SANCTIONING EVIL.” We now move into this year’s theme: the Forces of Evil created by G-d, ultimately for a Holy Purpose. Part two (covering chapters three and four) of the Ma’amer begin the focus on chapter 13 of the original Ma’amer Basi L’Gani (5710). For more details on this, see below.* In this Episode we will delve into the idea that darkness in our our world is by design, and can be viewed as a reflection of our own inner doubts and individual challenges. Yet, while the theological argument must perhaps be made, the copious documentation of the details of the divinely engineered concealment seem excessive and overwhelming. Moreover, could they not lead to a twisted sanctioning of evil? ’ ’ Part Three of this special series on Ma’amer Basi L’Gani 5743 (1983), entitled "BENEATH THE DARKNESS" is called “VIRTUAL REVOLUTION.” Seeking resolution to the faith conundrum of Evil's existence, a revolutionary idea on the virtual, yet real-time effect of Torah study is presented . The third class of the series (covering chapters five and six) on the Ma’amer continues to broadly address the primary theme in chapter 13 of the original Ma’amer Basi L’Gani (5710). For more details on this, see below.* In this Episode we are introduced to a sacred Engagement Theory that provides a fresh perspective on Torah study’s impact. Here we will clarify how the conceptual engagement with evil-in-theory actuates a virtual revolution of our world’s natural order and literally neutralizes the forces of darkness to release a higher form of light! The final terms of this remarkable mystical equation provide a deeply insightful solution to the baffling theological challenge made in the previous Episode. Episode One This series features an in-depth study - in 120-byte size segments - on the Twelfth Principles of our Jewish Faith, Belief in the coming of Moshiach. Drawing on a wide range of classic and contemporary commentaries ultimately addressing the burning issue of passively Anticipating or actively Awaiting? We open with MOSHIACH: MAN, OR MOMENT? to establish the foundation, sources and definitions of what precisely we are meant to believe in. This class is the first in an ongoing study series on The Geulah, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

! , Episode Two Maimonides knew the legal foundation had to be rock solid as the entire structure of Torah eschatology is built on it. He keenly understood that this could only be achieved by necessarily presenting two very different kinds of scriptural sources. The logic behind this is simple: the essential definition what we are meant to believe in, is actually comprised of two unique dimension -- that ultimately fuse as one. This is the second segment in an ongoing study series on The Geulah, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

! , Episode Three We've previously reviewed the Maimonidean legal approach to Believing in Moshiach. As its firmly rooted in the verses of the Pentateuch (Five Books of Moses) itself, all subsequent prophecies about the messianic redemption are ultimately but an outgrowth of the original trunk of the Torah. Fascinatingly, these original biblical verses quoted cover both unique, yet mutually inclusive dimensions of Moshiach. The Era and the Man. In this segment, we will highlight the distinction between the proofs, as well as move into an additional proof provided. Yet, upon thoughtful reflection, in view of the above it emerges as redundant, and in the final analysis entirely unnecessary. The development and presentation of this question will go on to serve as a platform for future segments. In the next episode we will go on to launch a fresh new perspective on just how important the concept of Moshiach is to the very essence of Judaism itself! This comprises the third offering in an ongoing study series on The Geulah, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach.

The biblical verses quoted covered both dimensions: The Era and the Man. Yet, the distinction between the proofs is clear with one explicit in the spiritual syntax itself, and the other only understood through the Oral Tradition. The final proof, a Messianic Mandate emerged as redundant and inconsequential. The response to that question introduces us to the Big Idea that linking Moshiach to a Mitzvah is an exciting gamechanger that radically emphasizes how centrally important the concept of Geulah (the Messianic Redemption) is to the very essence of Judaism! This comprises the fourth offering in an ongoing study series on The Geulah, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach.

! , Episode Five : Maimonides (the Rambam) carefully traced the Prophesized Messianic Redemption to the Pentateuch (Five Books of Moses). Verses quoted point to both The Era and the Man. He then frames Messiah in terms of a Mitzvah, the question is, why? In other words, the Rambam introduces his last proof to demonstrate how the climax of our Jewish Faith (that has inspired the Belief of Billions) is ultimately anchored in actual Mitzvah practice. Clearly, there is much to be achieved by anchoring belief in Messiah in actual Mitzvah Matters, in addition to the Prophetic Promises. Here, you will discover the deeper reason as to why this is so! This comprises the fifth offering in an ongoing study series on The Geula, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of The Messiah (Moshiach).

In this episode we explore the jurisprudence and advantage of linking our belief in Moshiach to actual Mitzvah Matters, in addition to the power of Prophetic Promises. We've already established that this endows its a greater degree of certainty. In this episode we further explore the literal advantage of linking our belief in Moshiach to an actual Mitzvah, beyond the lasting nature of Pentateuchal Promises. In this episode we'll learn how the climax of our Jewish Faith is made most literal when narrated in a commanding syntax -- addressing actual Halachik observance. Here you'll discover why only Mitzvah Matters, rather than a Biblical Narrative, comprises the real gold standard of literal truth, and as such, a far greater guarantee than the Promising Language of Prophecy provides. This explains why the Rambam presents an additional proof: to make this foundational element of our Jewish Faith most immutable. ! , Episode Eight In our previous episodes we elegantly demonstrated that by anchoring the Promise of Messianic Redemption in actual Mitzvah obligation, Maimonides (Rambam) effectively endows the future Messianic Redemption with a greater degree of certainty. Yet, while this fine thesis is based on sound logic and proven jurisprudence, its impact seems purely theoretical, offering no practical achievement or advantage. In this episode we move to illustrate how the enhanced certainty isn't merely conceptual. It does, in fact, brilliantly yield practical legal ramification. Here you'll discover why it's so significant that our Faith in Moshiach is incorporated into a Mitzvah Matter rather than Prophetic Promise and gain insight into why the Rambam may have chosen to present a kindred quote in a separate paragraph. As our Faith in Messianic Redemption is now linked to appointing new Cities of Refuge, being a "non-Believer" and rejecting the idea of a Literal Messiah becomes far more egregious. Because it amounts to denying Mitzvah eternity is becomes a position of actual Heresy! In this episode we return to the Messianic Prophecies of Balaam. A careful analysis the unusually crisp verbiage of Maimonides seems to reveal a well sourced anomaly. Discover why the verses of scripture to be quoted are first introduced by the Rambam as "Prophetic," and gain valuable insight and appreciation for the precision-driven nature of Maimonidean Codes, the Mishna Torah. This brilliant read into the Rambam's precise syntax illustrates how the seemingly unnecessary mention of Prophecy provides a unique and significant added ramification. With the Messianic Redemption overtly linked to "prophecy" the importance of embracing this Faith Principle becomes even more important and denying a prophecy amounts to a unique denial of G-d's communication humanity! The specific Mitzvah was concerning the Torah's command to designate "Cities of Refuge" designed to provide asylum for a person who committed an accidental act of murder. But why of all 613 Mitzvot would this be the Commandment of choice?! Here you'll discover fascinating insight into why this obligation, that seems to be the furthest thing from the messianic utopia of universal peace and plenty, is the perfect illustration of the redemptive future we are all obligated to anticipate! For starters: does the anticipated Moshiach have to preform miracles and wonders to establish his credentials as the bona fide Redeemer of Israel? Here you'll discover fascinating practical direction in legal rulings of Maimonides (Rambam) who addresses the pragmatic Halachik obligation, along with the major dissenting opinion and a conclusive takeaway! For starters will he have to preform miracles and wonders to establish his credentials as the bona fide Redeemer of Israel? The legal ruling of Maimonides (Rambam) on this very issue is crystal clear. Yet there seemed to be a major dissenting opinion. In episode eleven we framed it in terms of a reasoned if nuanced dispute following the fault lines of prior dissenting traditions. Here we raise the stakes, clarify the nature of the Rambam's position and forcefully demonstrate the integrity of his ruling. In this second take on the matter, far greater clarity is achieved on the matter. Episode Thirteen In the previous two episodes we clarified expectation of this anticipated Messianic Redeemer. The legal ruling of Maimonides (Rambam) on is clear: He will not have to make miracles to proves his bona fides. Further addressing this matter, the Rambam seems to overreach, or even conflate disparate issues. After all, the question is identifying the long-awaited Redeemer of Israel not the veracity of claims laid to prophecy. To bolster the question, copious cross-references are introduced to highlight the apparently superfluous nature of Maimonides's surprising conclusion. Here you'll discover how the Non-Miracle method of describing the way we should positively I.D. the real Moshiach, is actually Rambam's way of defining His truest Essence, Purpose and Persona! In other words, Maimonides's clear cut legal ruling on our expectation of the anticipated Messianic Redeemer addresses far more than the technical question of whether he will have to make miracles to demonstrate his bona fides and prove just cause. In this Episode we will further develop this thesis on the Rambam's opinion about the definition of Moshiach and the Redemptive Era by highlighting the order and systematic classification he pointedly chose in which to present his rulings on the matter! ! , Episode Fifteen In the previous Episode we focused on the Rambam's choice to place the Laws of Moshiach at the very tail end of his Magnum Opus, Mishna Torah. According to the Rebbe this can only be fully understood considering the thesis that our long-awaited anticipated Redeemer is the penultimate embodiment of Yiddishkiet. In this Episode we will further demonstrate the veracity of this thesis: The Rambam's inclusion of a legal ruling about what constitutes Heresy in the Laws of Moshiach is puzzling. The emphasis on the demerit of a faith deficiency rather than the merit of faith affirmation further piques curiosity. By viewing Moshiach as the ultimate fruition of Torah and Mitzvah perfection this becomes clearly understood! This will also shed light as to the reason Belief in Moshiach formally comprises a Faith Foundation in Judaism, and why Maimonides elected to include it in his proverbial Thirteen Principles of Faith. A key point of departure was Rambam's inclusion of a legal ruling about the demerit of a faith deficiency in this area. This led us to a deeper understanding of Moshiach's place withing the framework of Torah theology. ! , Episode Seventeen In the previous Episodes we painstakingly clarified the Maimonidean approach to the defining essence of Moshiach: Rather than being a Miracle Man, his mission is the full restoration of, and penultimate perfection of Torah study and Mitzvah observance. Reflecting this, the descriptive terminology thus far employed by the Rambam's has eschewed focusing of the miraculous transformation of life as we know it, and instead highlighting Moshiach's stated mission and purpose. This approach also deepened our understanding of Moshiach's place withing the broader framework of Torah theology and Faith Foundations. In this Episode we revisit the subject in continuing our study of Mishna Torah, Laws of Moshiach. In narrating the actual trajectory of Messianic development, Rambam seems to studiously ignore the inspired descriptions of our Sages. The narrow vision we are presented with ostensibly minimizes, rather than maximizing the Torah truth. The explanation beautifully dovetails into the thesis we've already established, lending further proof to its veracity and further clarifying our understanding of the subject! In the Final chapter of his codes the Rambam addresses what the futuristic Messianic world will look like. To be sure, he seems to be issuing a legal ruling on that, yet to materialize, reality. The obvious question is why? While an array of classic commentary highlights the seeming superfluity of speaking about the future in Halachik prose, we maintain certitude in its necessity. This conviction about the Rambam's rulings will ultimately leading to an important and even foundational fresh understanding of our faith obligations. Episode Twenty In our previous Episode we contemplated the Rambam's surprising decision to opine on the futuristic Messianic world in Halachik prose. After all, why issue legal rulings on a reality that has yet to materialize? The Rebbe proposes an innovative solution: Rambam's rulings on this subject are required as they form the foundation of our current Moshiach-centric faith obligations. Yet even if it's clear that Maimonides is of the opinion that clarity on the details of what we believe in, and await is required, the crux of the issue remains to be addressed: Why? Why indeed do we require detailed knowledge, why wouldn't it be sufficient to Believe and Await in Moshiach albeit not really knowing what precisely that means? Relief of this conundrum can be found by way of the previously established thesis of what the Messianic Redemption is truly all about! Does that diminish my status as a Jew? What if I sincerely wish I could believe in Moshiach, but after nearly 2,000 years of disappointing waiting (and untold suffering punctuating so much of that) I just can't seem to find the spiritual courage to have faith in a Messianic Redemption... ! , : ? Episode Twenty-Six In previous Episodes we've clarified the meaning of Belief in Moshiach and it's centrality to Torah-true Judaism, and what precisely we are awaiting. In this Episode we address the concept of it's "Urgency." Having resolved that faith in a future Messianic Redemption is a cornerstone of Yiddishkeit credo, the question may now be asked: "how necessary is it to anticipate this in imminent fashion?" In other words: is belief with absolute conviction, that someday in the (albeit) non-immediate or even distant future Moshiach will surely come -- despite disbelief or no expectation that it'll be anytime soon, good enough? To be sure, many pious people seem to follow that school of thought. Is it arbitrary, or is there a conclusive final word of the matter from the Torah literature of our Sages (e.g., the Talmudic era) as it filters into our daily Halachik observances? This presentation will shine a bright light on a question that appears clouded to so many! While many faith-professing, pious people seem to follow the first approach, an honest assessment of the precise prayerful prose of our Sages found in our daily Tefillah conclusively indicates otherwise. To further emphasize and demonstrate the veracity of this Torah true take of the subject, in this Episode we'll highlight a shocking Talmudic (and parallel Midrashic) teaching that's further augmented by Halachik jurisprudence of our modern era. Here you will discover why it comes to Moshiach, omission must be reframed as commission. Looking beyond the surface to properly view destruction as dynamic and ongoing, becomes constructive insofar as our yearning and aspiration is concerned. ! , Episode Twenty-Eight In our previous Episodes we established that actively Awaiting Moshiach is a matter of "high urgency." Proof positive can be seen in the way our daily prayers were formulated. Even when people forget important (non-urgent) things, they're always mindful when it's urgent. Yet the Talmud seems to ordain exactly the opposite, telling us that we'd best be served by not ruminating on the subject. Mindful anticipation and yearning, it appears, may in fact delay - rather than accelerate - the long-awaited arrival of Moshiach! How in Heaven are we to balance this surprising directive of one of the greatest of Sages with the many (conclusively proven) unequivocal statements about the necessity for constantly reinforced anticipation. MESSIANIC CALCULATIONS
Feb 28, 2023
23:12
! , Episode Twenty-Nine After exhaustively documenting the importance of actively awaiting the Geula, in the previous Episode we dealt with a surprising Talmudic imperative suggesting the opposite: a need to be mindless, rather than mindful about Moshiach's arrival. We went on to illustrate the critically important distinction between focusing on Moshiach (which is praiseworthy and encouraged) and focusing on the time of his "ordained" arrival (which is unhelpful and should be discouraged). Accordingly, the first is said to actively accelerate the Redemption, while the latter can delay Moshiach's coming. In this Episode we will pick up where we left off, because truth be told the said explanation doesn't fully solve the problem. For whilst such calculations may be superfluous, or even unhelpful, how would they deaccelerate, and actively delay the redemptive process? Clarifying this conundrum will require additional background. The reconciliation of seeming contradictions of prophetic statements and competing Talmudic schools of thought will include a clarification on our obligations to Hashem, and different possible scenarios for Moshiach's arrival. This all ultimately leads us to a more satisfying understanding of the bigger picture and provides a fuller answer to our question. ! , Episode Thirty-Three We've spent the previous episodes clarifying an enigmatic Talmudic statement about diverting attention from the subject of Moshiach. Surprisingly, our Sages seem to view it as a virtuous and meaningful way to accelerate His coming. Suggesting that achieving mindlessness regarding Geula was an act, rather than a lack, of faith! After conclusively demonstrating that a literal iteration of this teaching is untenable with Torah tradition, and would in fact, prove to be contradictory -- we went on to explain the Gemara in variety of kindred yet unique ways; all reflecting authentic Torah truisms. In the immediate past Episode, we went further, introducing a deeper mystical, and even positive spiritual meaning of "Hesach HaDaas" (lit. diverting or removing one's mind or attention). Rather than meaning mindless in literal fashion, we learnt to understand it as a transcendence of natural limitations imposed by rational mindfulness and cognition. In this new Episode we will embark on the next leg in this journey of Torah discovery. By creatively translating "Hesach" in a most literal manner, we will enter a new dimension. Framing it as "a-movement-away-from" or proverbial "journey" beyond the orbit of cognition, we will be positioned to travel a novel roadmap towards redemption! In pushing the envelope of rationality is then translated into practical terminology; articulating the path of action that can most dynamically catalyze Moshiach's arrival! This is the Thirty Third Episode of our ongoing study series on The Geula, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach (The Messiah).

! , Episode Thirty-Four We've already spent several episodes clarifying an enigmatic Talmudic statement about diverting attention from the subject of Moshiach. After proving that a face value understanding of this contradicts established Torah truism -- we went on to explain the Gemara in variety of kindred yet unique ways reflective of our authentic Torah tradition. We then went on to introduce a deeper spiritual meaning of "Hesach HaDaas" (lit. diverting or removing one's mind or attention) as a transcendence of the limitations imposed by rational mindfulness. Finally, in MESSIANIC JOURNEYS I, we learnt to creatively translate "Hesach" in a most literal manner, suggesting that in moving away, and journeying beyond the orbit of cognition, we would be able to blaze a new a new path leading us to redemption! In Part Two we delineate that new pathway that necessitates transcending the orbit of normative Yiddishkiet engagement to dynamically catalyze Moshiach's arrival! Covering a wide range of fascinating, cascading sources that lead us into new horizons as we travel the highways of Galut movement to journey into redemption! This is the Thirty Fourth Episode of our ongoing study series on The Geula, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach (The Messiah).

! , Episode Thirty-Five For the past seven (!) episodes we’ve focused on a shocking, entirely iconoclastic Talmudic statement in which our Sages seem to urge a de-emphasis of Moshiach to suggest that diverting our attention from the subject would best accelerate His long-awaited arrival. Upon proving that a literal understanding of this cryptic contradicts copious, well-founded Torah truisms – in three consecutive episodes we clarified the Gemara in variety of unique, yet kindred ways, all of which facilitated full compatibility with authentic time-honoured Torah tradition and theology. In subsequent episodes we went on to introduce a deeper spiritual meaning of "Hesach HaDaas" (lit. diverting or removing one's mind or attention). Newly framed as a transcendence of the limitations imposed by rational mindfulness; depicted as a particular methodology in spiritual devotion – one that can, and will please G-d, uniquely accelerate redemption. Then we went on to introduce a novel, elegantly creative translation of "Hesach" (in a most literal manner) as “moving away from” or “journeying beyond” well-trodden pathways to travel a new road leading us to redemption. This ultimately embodied a newly augmented approach to the Lurianic mystical concept of Tikkun Olam, representing the idea of spiritual global healing and restoration! In the immediate past episode, we further delineated necessity of a novel approach that would challenge and transcends the orbit of normative Yiddishkiet engagement to dynamically hasten and catalyze Moshiach's arrival! In this eighth and final rumination on the subject, we’ll open by reviewing and solidifying the most recent approach of resolution and explanation, only to delve far more deeply into the details. Weaving seemingly disparate new sources together, a striking tapestry of fresh insight into the original Talmudic statement will emerge. Ultimately, we are led into a fantastic new way of seeing the Talmud’s surprising choice of phenomenon that can now be seen a secret code of surprise indicating how we may scale new horizons to complete the journey into the era of redemption! This is the Thirty Fifth Episode of our ongoing study series on The Geula, our final Redemption generally referred to as the Coming of Moshiach (The Messiah).
