In this week’s Pause™ cast we discuss the quality of living with a Beginner’s Mind. We rarely experience things as they are. Everything that we see and feel is colored by our thoughts, memories, beliefs and expectations. We are always expecting, when we could be accepting. The way to get past this barrier is to cultivate the kavanah (intention) of chiddush. The practice of chiddush is developing the ability to see things without preconceived interpretations: to know that one does not know and to appreciate what is, rather than what might be. For the Jewish spiritual seeker, this mindset forms the basis of cultivating Jewish Mindfulness-- yishuv hada’at. This moment is always new and it’s one we've never been in before and yet we bring so many of our own ideas and expectations to every moment that we can't actually allow ourselves for the most part to see things as if for the first time. With each breath, then, in each moment, we can wake up to the truth of our lives and change how we react, how we engage with the world. We are not trapped in our habitual reactions but instead we can be born again into a new sense of who we are. This week’s Pause™ cast is on the theme we are working together is pausing or more precisely learning to pause. We emphasize how we can attempt to start learning to engage in this practice when we are caught in stressful and reactive situations. (Which is when we need to Pause™ most!) We discuss how pausing is a necessary component to the healthy rhythm of our lives, but also a fundamental need in our Avodas Hashem. The presence we are seeking is always here and now. We just need to stop moving in order to feel it. We get caught in behaviors because we didn’t pause and come back to what we can call our soul state (the goal is soul) and respond from our higher state of being. Rather than tapping into our true selves, we ultimately behave in ways we regret. Taking regular intentional pauses throughout the day can mitigate these unskillful behaviors. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein was born in the year 1895 in Uzda, near Minsk. In 1921 he became rabbi of Luban, near Minsk, where he remained until he came to the United States in 1937. In America he became the Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim, a yeshiva in NY. Rabbi Feinstein was a dedicated and selfless leader for the Jewish people to whom anyone could approach at any time with any problem. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein was one of the last of the great leaders and sages from Europe and was a representative of the greatness the Jewish people had before the destruction of the Jewish communities during World War II. We were greatly privileged to have such a giant here in America. When he passed away in 1986 the Jewish people lost a great and caring leader and one of our last connections to the greatness of European Jewry. Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz is the director of Semikhah at RIETS as well as the Mara D'atra of Beis Haknesses of North Woodmere. He was previously a rebbe at Lander's College for Men and an eleventh grade Rebbe at the DRS Yeshiva High School (HALB). Rabbi Lebowitz grew up in the Five Towns community and spent two years learning in eretz Yisrael at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh , where he developed a close relationship with Rav Ahron Silver, who taught him his derech halimud and encouraged him to pursue a career in Klei Kodesh. He has served as a Professor in the Department of Political Science, Dean of Students and Executive Dean of the Lander College of Arts & Sciences, Vice President for Planning and Assessment, and as the Touro College Accreditation Liaison to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). He has been instrumental in securing accreditation for the College in New York, leading it through five major reviews, and its branch campuses in California, Nevada, Moscow, Berlin, and Paris, as well the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Touro College of Pharmacy. Rabbi Shalom Arush is the Head of “Chut Shel Chessed” Institutions - Chut Shel Chessed’s incredible success is largely due to its leader – Rabbi Shalom Arush, and his unique ability to reach out and touch the hearts of Jews and non-Jews throughout the world. Rabbi Arush is not your typical orthodox rabbi. Born in Morocco, he made aliya and moved to Israel with his parents at age thirteen. After graduating high-school, he served in the Israeli Defense Force’s elite naval rescue unit as an airborne combat-medic, where he took part in many clandestine missions. After completing his three year stint in the service, Rabbi Arush attended university, majoring in economics. During that time, five of his closest friends were killed in a helicopter crash while carrying out an army mission. At their funerals, the Rabbi wondered about the seeming futility of life. This tragedy was the catalyst for a complete metamorphosis in the Rabbi’s outlook on the world, and eventually led to him discovering the truth of Torah and mitzvot. Rabbi Arush studied in several yeshivot until he finally found the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslev. Rabbi Arush learned with Breslev giants like Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Bender zt”l and Rabbi Shmuel Shapiro zt”l . Eventually, they urged the Rabbi to move to Jerusalem to begin bringing his fellow Jews closer to G-d. With his teacher’s blessings, Rabbi Arush established Chut Shel Chessed Institutions twenty years ago. R' Burnham is the senior educator for the Weiss Family Partners Detroit program of Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, where he does community outreach, and leads Jewish travel experiences in the US and abroad. He taught learning-disabled high school students for eight years in NYC, while receiving Rabbinical training at Shor Yoshuv Institute, and obtaining his Masters in Social Work from Yeshiva University.
