Beyond Checking the Boxes: Shmuel Springer on Spiritual Reawakening

Jun 14, 2026

37:58

In this episode of the Postville Yeshiva Alumni Podcast, we are joined by Shmuel Springer (often known simply as "Springer"), a Crown Heights native who attended Postville during what he describes as the "end of an era of insanity". Shmuel shares a raw and honest look at his journey from the "incubator" of Yeshiva to the challenges of the workforce and his eventual spiritual reawakening. Key highlights of this episode include: The Yeshiva "Incubator": Shmuel explains his concept of Yeshiva as an incubator—a perfect, controlled environment designed to provide bochurim with the necessary skills and information to eventually function in a "scary yet fun" world. From "Checking Boxes" to True Connection: Shmuel opens up about his period of leaving religious practice, explaining that for a time, his Yiddishkeit felt like a "mundane ritual". He describes his reawakening in California and how his experiences allowed him to return to a "more rounded and emotionally infused" life of faith.Culinary Roots in the Kitchen: Recalling his first commercial job in the food industry, Shmuel shares how he was the only student in his year to cook lunch from start to finish—a passion that began with over-excitedly chopping 15 onions and led to his current career in meat manufacturing and food product development in Florida. The "SPI" Philosophy: Shmuel discusses the importance of adding Specific Purposeful Intention (SPI) to religious rituals. He argues that without intention, a mitzvah is just a routine, but when the two are combined, it becomes a truly spiritual experience.Wild Postville Memories: From the dangerous thrill of BB gun fights on bicycles to borrowing the Shluchim’s van for a 4:00 AM Walmart run, Shmuel revisits the "insane" and creative ways students kept themselves entertained in the middle of Iowa.Lessons on Self-Work: Currently a husband and entrepreneur, Shmuel emphasizes that success in life isn't about the product or service you sell, but about working on yourself to become a "functioning human being". Join us for a wide-ranging and deeply personal conversation that explores culinary passion, the necessity of personal growth, and finding a meaningful path back to one's roots.

Mustaches, Mashpias, and Millions

May 27, 2026

27:41

In this episode, we explore the profound mechanics of spiritual growth and the Chassidic way of life. We dive into the true definition of Tshuva, explaining why the essence of repentance is a sincere decision for the future rather than just regret or self-affliction. We also tackle the practical and spiritual questions of our community: how to find the right Mashpia, why every personality type has a place in Chassidus, and the ethical complexities of modern industries like cash advances. Finally, we discuss the importance of Emunah, teaching why questioning "what if" about our life circumstances is a mistake, as everything is precisely ordained by Hashem for our best interest. Questions: What is teshuvah? Is it okay for a bochur to be a mashpia for another bochur? Why did hashem create the female and male לויתן 🐋? If I come to Zal can I drive? Can I trim my mustache? Yankees, Knicks, and Yeshiva: A Conversation with Mendel Telsner

Jun 7, 2026

33:12

In this episode of the Postville Yeshiva Alumni Podcast, we are joined by Mendel Telsner, a "Crown Heights Proud" alumnus who reflects on what he describes as his "best year of yeshiva hands down". Mendel shares how the unique environment of Postville allowed him to forge his own path in learning and spiritual growth. Key highlights of this episode include: The 7:30 AM Deal: Mendel reveals the "deal" he made with Rabbi Levin: in exchange for perfect attendance at 7:30 AM Chassidus every morning, he was given reshus to fly in to Crown Heights for Yud Shevat..Mastering the Gemara: By utilizing his independent schedule, Mendel spent his afternoons immersed in Bava Basra, ultimately finishing the entire volume four or five times—an accomplishment he still cherishes as a moment of "completeness".The Cash Advance Industry & Career Advice: Mendel discusses his transition into the professional world and the specific guidance he sought from Rabbi Levin before entering the cash advance industry. He shares the two conditions Rabbi Levin set for him to maintain his spiritual identity while working: keeping a morning learning schedule and taking on a specific daily commitment. The Tzedakah Pledge: In a practical lesson on bitachon (trust), Mendel explains his "pledge system" for charity. He describes how pledging to give more than he thinks he can afford at the start of the year has led to consistent blessings and the ability to meet those goals.Modern Boundaries: Mendel offers a "rant" on the importance of daily Rambam for every Chassid and shares his personal discipline of turning off his phone entirely between Mincha and Maariv to stay present.Postville Nostalgia: From the "blue bus" rides from Milwaukee to Melava Malkas at the Rubashkin home and the "character" of the Postville community, Mendel revisits the sights and sounds of his formative years. Join us for an energetic and honest conversation about taking ownership of your learning, setting professional boundaries, and the power of radical generosity.

Tanya: Shaar Blatt (part 1)– Is Serving Hashem Really "Very Close" to Your Heart?

Aug 23, 2026

23:04

Text Covered: Tanya: Shaar Blatt (Title Page) – from "Sefer Likkutei Amarim..." to the foundational pasuk "Ki karov eilecha hadavar me'od b'picha u'v'lvavcha la'asoto."This episode introduces Sefer HaTanya by dissecting its Shaar Blatt (title page) and analyzing the historical printing details as well as the Alter Rebbe's immense humility in naming his masterpiece Likkutei Amarim (a collection of sayings gathered from his teachers). We explore the true, towering spiritual definition of the Beinoni (the "in-betweener"), which is far from mediocre and represents an active battle for complete self-control. Finally, the shiur frames the core mystery of the entire Tanya: how can the Torah state that serving Hashem is "very close" and easy to achieve, especially when it comes to u'v'lvavcha—generating genuine, passionate excitement and love in one's heart?Key Takeaways: The Humility of the Compiler: The name Likkutei Amarim reveals the Alter Rebbe’s self-effacement, presenting his work not as a novel philosophy, but as a carefully gathered treasury of Torah from his holy teachers and predecessors.Redefining the Beinoni: Far from being just "average," the Beinoni is a highly disciplined spiritual archetype who maintains absolute mastery over their actual behavior and thoughts, serving as the practical goal for every individual. The Struggle of the Heart (U'V'Lvavcha): While physical action (la'asoto) is always within a person's mechanical control if they try hard enough, the Tanya's central focus is providing a realistic roadmap to arouse true Chassidic excitement and joy in the heart for Elokut.

Tanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 4) – Fire, Water, Air, and Earth: The Anatomy of the Animal Soul

Sep 16, 2026

54:59

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 4) – From the AriZal's mapping of the four elements (Arba Yesodot: Eish, Mayim, Ruach, Offer) of the Nefesh HaBahamit and their nine negative Midos, through the innate good traits of Rachmanus and Gmilut Chassadim, to the concluding lines of Perek 1 analyzing Klipat Noga versus the three completely impure Klipot (Shalosh Klipot HaTmeiot). In this episode concluding Likkutei Amarim Perek 1, we examine how the Nefesh HaBahamit (Animal Soul) expresses itself through the four cosmic elements of Eish (Fire/Anger & Pride), Mayim (Water/Pleasure), Ruach (Air/Frivolity & Empty Talk), and Offer (Earth/Laziness & Depression). We discover why the Animal Soul of a Jew—originating from Klipat Noga—inherently possesses two natural good traits: Rachmanus (compassion) and Gmilut Chassadim (kindness), illustrated through the moving story of a WWII Jewish partisan who could not bring himself to act with cruelty. Finally, the shiur addresses the challenging conclusion of Perek 1, contrasting the translucent nature of Klipat Noga with the opaque nature of the three entirely impure Klipot, while exploring the Alter Rebbe's famous response during his imprisonment in Petersburg and the special status of Chassidei Umot HaOlam. Key Takeaways: The Blueprint of the Animal Soul (Arba Yesodot): The nine negative character traits (Midos) of the Nefesh HaBahamit stem directly from four physical and spiritual elements: Eish (Anger and Ga'avah), Mayim (Desire for Tanugim), Ruach (Frivolity, Leitzanus, and Dvorim Betelim), and Offer (Atzlut and Atzavut).Innate Goodness via Klipat Noga: Because a Jew's Nefesh HaBahamit derives from the translucent spiritual realm of Klipat Noga (a mixture of light and obscurity), every Jew naturally inherits two core virtues: Rachmanus (compassion) and Gmilut Chassadim (lovingkindness).Klipat Noga vs. Shalosh Klipot HaTmeiot: Unlike fully opaque Klipah which completely conceals Elokut, Klipat Noga can be elevated toward holiness, explaining the fundamental distinction in soul roots at the climax of Perek 1 as well as the unique soul-spark of Chassidei Umot HaOlam.

Sep 16, 2026

26:20

Text Covered: Megillat Ruth, Perek 1, Pesukim 3–14.In this episode, the shiur examines the tragic turn of events in Moav following the death of Elimelech, leaving Naomi alone with her sons Machlon and Chilion. We explore their controversial marriages to Ruth and Arpah, analyzing the Halachic discussions surrounding their geirus and whether a valid Beis Din was present. The shiur details how after ten childless years in Moav, both brothers lose their wealth and pass away, prompting Naomi to begin her difficult journey back to Eretz Yisrael upon hearing that the famine has ended. Finally, we examine the royal lineages of Elimelech (descended from Nachshon) and Eglon (King of Moav), as well as the divergent paths of Arpah and Ruth. Key Takeaways: Halachic Debates on Geirus: An exploration of whether Ruth and Arpah underwent conversion prior to marriage and how a Beis Din functions in complex circumstances. The Lineage of Royalty: A deep dive into the connection between the royal families of Elimelech and Eglon, King of Moav, and how their descendants produced both King David and Golyas.Naomi's Return in Poverty: Understanding the personal struggle of Naomi as she faces the loss of her family and fortune before deciding to return home.

Tanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 3) – Overcoming Confusion and the Four Elements of Klipah

Sep 15, 2026

52:34

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 3) – From the Talmudic and Midrashic explanation of how a Tzaddik conquers the Yetzer Hara through fasting, to the two dots in the Tanya text introducing the AriZal's teaching (via Rabbi Chaim Vital in Etz Chaim) on the Two Souls (Shenei Nefashot), the psychology of internal clarity, and the entry of the Nefesh HaBahamit into the heat of the blood (choam d'dama) derived from the four elements (Arba Yesodot) of Klipah. This episode transitions into the core foundation of Sefer HaTanya—introduced from the AriZal's Etz Chaim—that every Jew possesses two complete, distinct souls (Shenei Nefashot): a Nefesh HaBahamit (Animal/Vital Soul) and a Nefesh Elokit (Godly Soul). We analyze how realizing you contain two distinct internal personalities eliminates deep psychological confusion and spiritual depression, drawing a parallel to Rivka’s relief upon learning she was carrying twins. The shiur then examines the Nefesh HaBahamit (also called Nefesh HaChiyunit), exploring how Hashem wondrously binds this spiritual vitality into physical reality through the heat of the blood (choam d me-dama). Finally, we unpack how the Nefesh HaBahamit originates from Klipah and Sitra Achra, deriving its natural negative Midos from the four spiritual elements of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth (Eish, Ruach, Mayim, Offer). Key Takeaways: The Paradigm Shift of Two Souls: Rather than having a single identity with fluctuating moods, every Jew possesses two complete personalities—the Nefesh HaBahamit and the Nefesh Elokit—a realization that brings profound mental clarity and ends self-condemnation.How Soul Connects to Body (Choam D'Dama): The spiritual vitality of the Nefesh HaBahamit enclothes itself in physical reality through the least tangible physical aspect of the body: the heat of the blood (choam d'dama). The Four Elements of Klipah (Arba Yesodot): Natural negative character traits (Midos) stem directly from the four spiritual elements (Eish, Ruach, Mayim, Offer) of Klipah and Sitra Achra that form the foundation of the Animal Soul

Tanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 2) – Why 99% Mitzvos Does Not Make a Benoni

Sep 10, 2026

30:24

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 – From the Gemara’s description of Tzaddikim and Reshaim being ruled by their "Judges" (Dayanim) through the famous dialogue between Rabbah and Abaye, and the systematic rejection of common definitions of the Benoni. This episode continues the exploration of Likkutei Amarim Perek 1, digging deeper into the internal identity of the soul beyond mere external behavior. We analyze the puzzling statement of the Sage Rabbah, who claimed to be a Benoni despite his legendary status as a living Torah who learned non-stop, and we examine the theological debate of Iyov (Job) regarding whether Hashem predetermines one's spiritual character. The shiur methodically disqualifies five common misconceptions of the Benoni, proving that in the eyes of the Torah, even a single Aveira or a failure to protest the sins of others technically categorizes a person as a Rasha. Ultimately, we learn that the Benoni is not an "average" person in the way we usually imagine, but a high-level spiritual archetype whose true definition the Alter Rebbe is preparing to reveal.

28

Tanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 1) – Why Self-Depreciation Destroys Joy in Avodat Hashem

Sep 9, 2026

26:37

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Likkutei Amarim Perek 1 (Part 1) – Opening Talmudic statement in Tractate Niddah ("Mashbi'in oto tehi tzaddik v'al tehi rasha...") through the Alter Rebbe's fundamental questions on self-perception and depression, concluding with the introduction of the five spiritual categories in Gemara and Ra'aya Meheimna (Zohar). This episode begins our study of Likkutei Amarim Perek 1, analyzing the heavenly oath (shevua) administered to every Neshama before entering this physical world. We explore the Alter Rebbe's foundational questions regarding the contradiction between this oath ("be like a Rasha in your own eyes") and the Mishna in Avot ("do not be a Rasha in your own eyes"). The shiur highlights the severe psychological flaw of viewing oneself as intrinsically bad, which leads either to paralyzing sadness that prevents serving Hashem b'simcha or to complete apathy. Finally, we introduce the five distinct spiritual categories (Tzaddik v'tov lo, Tzaddik v'ra lo, Rasha v'tov lo, Rasha v'ra lo, and Beinoni), contrasting the simple Talmudic focus on external circumstances with the Ra'aya Meheimna's deep, soul-level definition where Tzaddik v'ra lo means the internal bad is completely subjugated to the good. Key Takeaways: The Contradiction of Self-Perception: The Talmud instructs a person to view themselves as a Rasha, yet Pirkei Avot explicitly forbids considering oneself evil; resolving this tension is essential to understanding who we truly are.The Danger of Negative Self-Identity: Internalizing a label of failure destroys self-esteem and leads to two destructive outcomes: deep depression that halts Avodat Hashem b'simcha, or cynical indifference toward Mitzvos.Redefining Tzaddik v'Ra Lo via Ra'aya Meheimna: While simple Talmudic explanations associate Tov Lo / Ra Lo with external prosperity or suffering, the Zohar (Ra'aya Meheimna) reveals that Tzaddik v'ra lo refers to a Tzaddik whose remaining internal bad (ra) is subjugated to the good.

Tanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Part 5) – All Answers to All Questions

Sep 8, 2026

28:31

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Compiler’s Introduction) (Part 5) – from Page 6 (exploring "Noda ba-she'arim ba'alah" and the three spiritual hurdles of books), continuing to "Ach l'fnei daas...", "Kuntresim elu..." (providing all answers to all spiritual questions), the role of the Mashpia, and concluding with the 5-year printing copyright decree. This episode concludes our study of Hakdamat HaMelakeit, unpacking the Alter Rebbe's astonishing declaration that Sefer HaTanya holds "all the answers to all the questions" regarding our personal service of Hashem. We explore how a printed text overcomes the physical limitations of Yechidus—specifically the lack of time for private audiences and the human tendency of shichyah (forgetting). The shiur highlights how the Mashpia acts as an essential guide to help customize these universal teachings to the unique, personal needs of one's Neshama. We analyze the Alter Rebbe's urgent call to these spiritual mentors to abandon false humility and share their wisdom, proving that teachers ultimately grow even more than their students from this sacred work. Finally, we dive into the historical backdrop of the Tanya's publication, detailing how strict copyright boundaries were established to guard against typo-ridden manuscripts and deliberate forgeries by the Misnagdim. Key Takeaways: A Tailored Guide Beyond Time: While the Alter Rebbe compiled Sefer HaTanya based on his deep, face-to-face encounters with the Chassidim of his generation, he also envisioned and addressed the unique internal battles of every future reader. The Power of the Mashpia: To bridge the gap when a student cannot see how a book's general rules apply to them, the Tanya elevates the Mashpia as a vital guide who can pinpoint the exact spiritual medicine a soul requires. The Duty to Teach & Guarding the Text: True spiritual leadership requires avoiding false humility, as withholding Torah grain brings a severe punishment. To protect these pure teachings, the Alter Rebbe added a strict five-year printing copyright to combat corruptions and targeted forgeries by the Misnagdim.

Tanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Part 4) – Why Sefer HaTanya Can Beat a Personal Audience with the Rebbe

Sep 4, 2026

44:41

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Compiler’s Introduction) (Part 4) – Page 6 to 7, from the explanation of how differing Torah opinions are rooted in Chessed and Gevurah and how Hashem is known "le-fum shiura d'liba", to the transition paragraph of "Ach l'fnei daas l'chol makkirei..." where the Alter Rebbe details the two unique advantages of a book over face-to-face Yechidus. This episode concludes the first major section of Hakdamat HaMelakeit, explaining how differing opinions in Halacha are rooted in the cosmic spiritual attributes of Chessed (lovingkindness/leniency) and Gevurah (severity/strictness) which subconsciously motivate our intellects. We explore how Hashem is uniquely revealed to every Neshama le-fum shiura d'liba (according to the measure of one's heart), as hinted in the pasuk "Noda ba-she'arim ba'alah". The shiur then transitions to the Alter Rebbe's famous reassurance, "Ach l'fnei daas...", where he explains how his deep soul-acquaintance with Anash allows Sefer HaTanya to serve as a customized guide for everyone. Finally, we uncover the two surprising advantages a printed book holds over a face-to-face Yechidus: overcoming the limitations of physical time and the human tendency of shichyah (forgetting).Key Takeaways: Subconscious Soul Roots (Chessed and Gevurah): Halachic disagreements are not merely intellectual; they trace back to the soul's cosmic origin. A rabbi with a soul rooted in Chessed will naturally find logical sources for leniency, while one rooted in Gevurah will find sources for strictness, mapping directly onto how we handle complex educational and personal dilemmas today. The Rebbe's Soul-Connection Beyond Time: To those who feared Sefer HaTanya was only written for the Alter Rebbe's immediate contemporaries ("l'chol makkirei"), we learn that a Rebbe's spiritual vision extends to future generations. When the Alter Rebbe compiled these answers, he intimately held the unique Neshama and struggles of every future reader in mind. The Two Advantages Over Yechidus: While everyone naturally prefers a face-to-face meeting with a Rebbe, Yechidus is physically limited. First, there is a severe constraint of time—whereas a book is always on your shelf to be read; second, human memory is highly prone to shichyah (forgetting), but the printed word of the Tanya remains static and accessible forever.

Tanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Part 3) – The Art of Applying Torah to Your Unique Soul

Sep 3, 2026

42:32

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Compiler’s Introduction) (Part 3) – Page 6, exploring the second and third issues with books of Musar and guidance, focusing on the uniqueness of the 600,000 opinions, the distinction between general rules (Clal) and specific application (Prat), and how intellectual perspectives are rooted in Chessed and Gevurah. In this episode, we continue our journey through Hakdamat HaMelakeit, analyzing why a printed book of spiritual guidance struggles to address every individual's unique struggle. We explore how the blessing made on seeing 600,000 people celebrates not just physical diversity, but the incredible reality of 600,000 distinct opinions and spiritual paths created by Hashem. The shiur then introduces the third challenge: even when books of Yirat Shamayim are directly based on the holy Torah, the average person lacks the ability to translate general principles (Clal) into specific, personal advice (Prat). Finally, we delve into the famous concept of Elu v'Elu Divrei Elokim Chayim, discovering that what we perceive as pure intellect is actually a reflection of our subconscious soul-root, predisposed towards either Chessed (lovingkindness) or Gevurah (severity/restriction).Key Takeaways: 600,000 Opinions and the Spirit of Leadership: Based on the blessing for seeing 600,000 Jews, Hashem created every person with a unique face and a distinct opinion. True leadership—exemplified by Yeshua who was blessed with a godly spirit—requires the rare capacity to relate to and handle every individual's distinct level. The Gap Between Clal and Prat: Although the entire Torah belongs to every Jew as a personal manual, a text-based book presents general rules (Clal). The difficulty lies in Prat (specific application)—knowing exactly how, when, and if a general spiritual teaching applies to one's unique life circumstances. The Illusion of Pure Intellect: In the debates between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel, both sides present brilliant intellectual arguments, yet their divergent conclusions are ultimately driven by their souls' spiritual roots. A soul rooted in Chessed naturally interprets reality through leniency and inclusion, while a soul from Gevurah is inclined toward strictness and boundary-setting.

Tanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Part 2) – The Limitations of Human Therapy & Self-Help

Aug 27, 2026

44:16

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Compiler’s Introduction) (Part 2) – Page 6, focusing on the second paragraph of the Hakdama starting with the phrase "Margala b'pumai d'inshi" (it is regular in the mouths of people) regarding "eino domeh shmiah l'riyah" (you cannot compare hearing to seeing). This episode explores the Alter Rebbe's foundational warning in Hakdamat HaMelakeit that a book of Musar or self-help can never truly substitute for a personalized, face-to-face relationship with a Rebbe. We analyze the two primary failures of books: the reader's own subjective biases and limited intellect which obscure the sweet "balm for the soul", and the reality that every person has a unique spiritual makeup that cannot be solved with one-size-fits-all advice. The shiur discusses the role of modern therapy and the Rebbe’s wisdom in providing multiple Mashpi'im in yeshiva to match individual styles. Finally, we see how the rare blessing recited upon seeing 600,000 people at once proves that Hashem, the ultimate artist, deliberately crafted every single soul with its own distinct look and path.Key Takeaways: The Inherent Limits of Written Words: A book is inevitably interpreted through the reader's own prior understanding and biases, making it difficult for a confused soul searching in the dark to receive the intended spiritual "balm".The "One-Size-Fits-All" Fallacy: Every person is spiritually unique, meaning that a self-help method or therapeutic approach that beautifully transforms one individual might fail completely for another.Hashem as the Ultimate Artist: The halachic blessing recited upon seeing 600,000 people at once—which translates to "the One who is smart and created secrets"—stands as a profound testament to how Hashem uniquely crafted every individual's facial features and internal character traits.

Tanya: Hakdamas HaMelakeit (Part 1) – Why a Book Cannot Replace Yechidus

Aug 25, 2026

30:35

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Haskamos (Approbations) of Rabbi Meshulam Zusil of Anipoli, Rabbi Yehuda Leib HaKohen, and the Alter Rebbe's sons; and Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Compiler's Introduction) from the opening greeting of "Eleichem ishim ekra..." to the introduction of the Yechidus dilemma. This episode transitions into the holy approvals (Haskamos) of Sefer HaTanya, exploring the historical necessity of copyright protections and the beautiful stories of how these approbations were secured from the holy brothers of Anipoli and the hidden tzaddik named Carl. We then enter the Hakdamat HaMelakeit (Compiler's Introduction), where the Alter Rebbe’s ultimate humility shines as he defines himself merely as a "compiler" (Melakeit) gathering established truths rather than writing a novel philosophy. The shiur dissects his intimate opening letter to Anash (Anshei Shelomeinu) and addresses a foundational spiritual dilemma: why a standardized book is inherently limited compared to a deeply personalized, face-to-face soul connection (Yechidus) with a Rebbe. Finally, we see how the Alter Rebbe begins to bridge this gap, paving a path for every individual seeking to refine their connection to Elokut and serve Hashem in their own place.Key Takeaways: The Spiritual Weight of Haskamos: Originally established by the Vaad Aratzot to protect against heresy and secure printing copyrights, the Haskamos in Tanya represent deep spiritual endorsements, celebrated by the ecstatic dancing of the holy brothers of Anipoli upon first reading the manuscript.Chassidic Self-Effacement (Bittul): By adopting the title of Melakeit (compiler), the Alter Rebbe demonstrates extreme humility, making it clear that Sefer HaTanya is a structured synthesis of teachings inherited from his great masters—primarily the Maggid of Mezeritch and the Baal Shem Tov.The Yechidus vs. Book Debate: The Alter Rebbe masterfully validates a common spiritual concern—that a standardized book cannot replace the direct, personalized guidance of Yechidus. This sets the stage for Sefer HaTanya’s ultimate objective: acting as a customized, accessible blueprint for the unique internal battles of every individual.

Tanya: Shaar Blatt (part 2) – The Long and Short Way to the Heart

Aug 24, 2026

47:02

Text Covered: Sefer HaTanya: Shaar Blatt (Title Page) – discussing the foundational pasuk "Ki karov eilecha hadavar me'od b'picha u'v'lvavcha la'asoto" and the Alter Rebbe's introduction regarding the "long and short way" (b'derech arukah u'ktzarah). This episode unpacks the Shaar Blatt of Tanya, addressing the central paradox of how serving Hashem can truly be "very close" and easy to achieve in our hearts (u'v'lvavcha). We explore the Alter Rebbe's promise of a "long and short way" (b'derech arukah u'ktzarah) to align our internal feelings with our physical actions. By analyzing the distinct spiritual paths of Musar, general Chassidut, and Chabad, the shiur highlights how deep intellectual internalization creates an unbreakable, permanent connection to Elokut. Through vivid practical examples—ranging from character refinement to historical tales of self-control—we discover why genuine, lasting change requires a patient, structured approach.Key Takeaways: The Paradox of "Very Close": While keeping physical mitzvos (la'asoto) is always within a person's behavioral control, cultivating a genuine, daily love for Yiddishkeit in the heart (u'v'lvavcha) is the difficult challenge that Sefer HaTanya is specifically written to solve.Short-Long vs. Long-Short Paths: Quick-fixes (the "short-long way") like fasting to lose weight or using fear to squash anger only suppress issues temporarily; true character transformation (the "long-short way") requires continuous self-work and therapy to permanently refine negative midos.Musar, General Chassidut, and Chabad: Musar relies on external rebuke to suppress bad traits, and general Chassidut temporarily lifts the Neshama through the inspirational presence of a Tzaddik; however, Chabad Chassidus uses deep intellectual study to ensure that your relationship with Hashem is fully internalized and everlasting.

Mendy shares his unique journey to Postville and the lasting impact the Yeshiva's atmosphere had on his life and the lives of his peers.Key highlights of this episode include: Rediscovering Postville: Mendy recalls his surprise at being sent to Postville after the "raid," admitted he initially thought the community and Yeshiva were "done". He describes how he quickly fell in love with the "vibe" and atmosphere of the city and the school. The Power of Presence: Reflecting on the impact of that year, Mendy shares a moving story about a fellow student who recently attributed his religious commitment to the supportive environment the group provided, even without "answering existential questions".Memorable Moments: From public Menorah lightings with Aaron Goldsmith to traveling across the Midwest for Chanukah, Mendy revisits the lively adventures of his student days. He also shares a "special" memory of an impromptu, late-night guitar and singing session in the dorm lounge that brought the entire Yeshiva together.Advice for the Future: For current bochurim worried about their future careers or lack of secular education, Mendy offers a message of bitachon (trust), encouraging them to "live in the moment" and trust that Hashem provides. He shares how his own life, including his growing family, is a testament to how blessings follow when one doesn't stress over the small things.A Lesson in Ahavas Yisrael: Mendy concludes with a powerful Dvar Torah on why Moshe breaking the Luchos (Tablets) was actually his greatest achievement. He explains how this act demonstrated Moshe's absolute love for the Jewish people, prioritizing their survival over even the Torah itself. Join us for an inspiring conversation about building community, trusting in Hashem, and the enduring lessons of Postville.

He also makes a strong case for the necessity of physical exercise for mental and spiritual health.Finding Greatness in Low Points: Chaim shares a powerful Dvar Torah based on his Bar Mitzvah Parsha, explaining why Moshe breaking the Luchos—traditionally seen as a low point—was actually his "crowning accomplishment" because it prioritized his love for the Jewish people over all else.
