This is a story I heard from my mechutan, my son-in-law's father, Rabbi Michoel Bachar:  “When my parents arrived in Eretz Yisrael, they settled near Binyamina. This was about 75 years ago.  It was a very difficult time in Eretz Yisrael. It was just after the war.  It was the time of the tzena – there was almost nothing to eat.  My father bought a donkey and a plow and hired himself out as a ploughman.  It was very hard work. My mother learned to sew and worked as a seamstress - and that's how they make a living.  It wasn’t a great standard of life, but they survived. And the years passed by. Slowly, they saved some money, and decided to plant a vineyard... Look around you! Everything is Hashem’s word. There is nothing else. Every challenge is being sent to you by Hashem. We are Jews. We don’t believe in Dualism. We don’t believe in two powers. We don’t believe that the Yetzer Hara is a loose gun. Nothing has any independent power. Lyrics: LIKE A HURRICANE –Robert Levinsky and Yaakov Asher Sinclair ©1978/2018 A little lower than the Angels You placed Man, With all the power to be a partner in Your great plan. A heart that’s filled with lust and anger betrays the soul, We can reach a little higher, our wings unfold. Like a Hurricane – reaching for the sky where angels fear to fly, Like a Hurricane - - they fall away - our feet of clay Like a Hurricane – Don’t look down! We left the ground. Borne on wings of prayer. The world is filled with much confusion near the eye of the storm, So much bloff - so much illusion – the heart is torn. Times a’changing ever faster – the End is near, When all the world will seek the Master. Rejoice in fear! Like a Hurricane – reaching for the sky where angels fear to fly, Like a Hurricane - they fall away - our feet of clay Like a Hurricane – Don’t look down! We left the ground. Borne on wings of prayer. Were I to take the wings of dawn to the distant West, Also there Your Hand would guide me, Your Right Hand to my quest. Like a Hurricane – reaching for the sky where angels fear to fly, Like a Hurricane - - they fall away - our feet of clay Like a Hurricane – Don’t look down! We left the ground, Fighting for King and Country. In 1932, Maxwell House put out a Pesach Haggadah as a marketing promotion. It’s been continuously in print since then. They’ve printed over 50 million copies. Pesach is the most observed of all the Jewish festivals. Even whenJews become secular, and all the other festivals fall by the way, Pesach still hangs in there. Why is that? What is it about Pesach that is so deeply rooted in the Jewish psyche? Chag Kasher v'Sameach! In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O’Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. These are the things that Hashem commanded to do them:” (35:1) Here's a parable drawn from motorcycles to illustrate the concept of ‘bidieved’ - an untranslatable word usually translated as ‘after the fact.’ A mitzva has an ideal – lechatchila – way to be performed, but there is also a degree of latitude that, while not ideal, will still cause the mitzva to have its effect. That's 'bidieved.' But what's that got to do with motorcycles? Although AI is still very much in its infancy, it’s clear that the basic skills of drawing and painting, of music, and much more, are becoming redundant. Why spend 5 years in art school when you can create a Turner or a Dutch Master with a few computer commands? What’s the connection between Shema and Teruma? Our Sages tell us that one fiftieth is the average tithe that a farmer should give to the kohen from his grain and produce. The Vilna Gaon explains that the word 'terumah' is an allusion to 'trei m’meah', meaning two out of one hundred, which is one fiftieth. But if the word ‘teruma’ is hinting at a fiftieth, why use a word that hints to two parts in a hundred? The BBC reports that a badly burnt scroll from the Roman town of Herculaneum has been digitally "unwrapped", providing the first look inside it for 2,000 years. The document, which looks like a lump of charcoal, was charred by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79CE and is too fragile to ever be physically opened. Last year, a similar team managed to read about 5% of another Herculaneum scroll. Its subject was Greek Epicurean philosophy, which teaches that fulfilment in life can be found through the pleasure of everyday things. It struck me as ironic that an ancient scroll, which is now lifeless carbon, should glorify the pleasures of this world, whereas another ancient scroll, our holy Torah, which doesn’t need electrons to be accelerated to light speed to make out its message, should teach that life’s fulfilment is be found by taking the everyday things in our life and elevating them to a level of transcendence and eternity. Standing up to a test is one of the three tasks of Jew in this world. (along with praying and doing the mitzvos). Sometimes half the battle is to realize that you are in a test while it's happening. "A day in the life, a moment of connection with God is a lifetime. Every breath we take is a world of opportunity. Every moment. Time looks like a heartless, relentless march forever forward to our end. As poet William Carlos Williams said, “Time is a storm in which we are all lost.” But is time a rapidly dwindling, limited resource that we must spend frivolously before it’s all gone? Maybe time isn’t a desperate scrabble to use it all up – before we run out of it. The English word ‘moment’ comes from the Latin word momentum, implying relentless movement – The march of time. The Hebrew word for time - rega, comes from ragua, which means a state of calm or rest. The rest of your life. My life as a Jew is brimful of constrictions and restrictions. It is these very restrictions, however, that are the paint and canvas that make the physical world speak in the language of the spirit. Walk down the street! Take an airplane! Get on a bus! Everywhere we go, we are challenged by a worldview that glorifies immorality and the unbridled pursuit of physical pleasure. What can protect us from these icons of immorality? In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector’s item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich’s Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony’s Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. Tradition is more than chicken soup, or bagels and lox, it's why the Jewish People believe in God. Yaakov says in Parshat Vayetze, “If God…will give me bread to eat and clothes to wear…” Ostensibly, there is no other reason to have bread than to eat it; no other reason to have clothes than to wear them, so why did Yaakov spell out ‘bread to eat’ and ‘clothes to wear'? If you told someone living a couple of hundred years ago that the Arabs would be a force to threaten Western civilization, they’d have laughed. The thought that a bunch of nomads floating around the desert, like some lost extras from Lawrence Of Arabia, could rule the world, would have seemed preposterous. But יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם יִשְׂחָ֑ק, “He who dwells in the Heavens will laugh.” (Tehillim 2:4) In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. As much as Reb Dov was a giant in Torah – a twenty-foot Moshe in his generation, so he was a Moshe in his generation in his humility and compassion.
