פרשת השבוע פותחת בפסוקים "וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הַבָּאִים מִצְרָיְמָה אֵת יַעֲקֹב אִישׁ וּבֵיתוֹ בָּאוּ. רְאוּבֵן שִׁמְעוֹן לֵוִי וִיהוּדָה" וכו' (שמות א, א-ב). התורה מאריכה להזכיר את שמות בני ישראל כדי ללמדנו על חשיבות השמות היהודיים שנקראו ביסודם על פי המשמעות שלהם בלשון הקודש. ואומרים חז"ל (במדבר רבה פרשה יג אות כ' ד"ה ביום הששי): "למה נאמר ג' מיני עולה, כנגד ג' מידות טובות שהיו בידן של ישראל במצרים ובזכותן נגאלו, שלא שינו את שמם ולא שינו את לשונם ושגדרו עצמם מן הערוה". הרי ששמירת וקריאת השמות היהודיים המקוריים הם לא רק מידה טובה ומנהג טוב, אלא תנאי וזכות להביא את הגאולה לעם ישראל.
