The Satmar Rebbe carried the weight of an entire world on his shoulders. He built mosdos, guided thousands, answered endless shailos, and devoted every waking moment to the needs of Klal Yisroel. Yet those closest to him would say that his greatest joy came at the end of the day, when the world grew quiet. Alone in his room, he would immerse himself in Torah until the early hours of the morning, learning with a unique sweetness that reflected a neshama completely connected to Hashem. A year ago, I heard a recording of the Rebbe learning, and it stopped me in my tracks. There was something otherworldly about the way he sang through the words, as if nothing else existed. That moment stayed with me and became the inspiration for this song. Rooted in the warm Chassidishe sounds I grew up with in Williamsburg, “The Rebbe’s Teniyah” imagines those precious nighttime hours when, after all the responsibility and noise of the day, the Rebbe returned to what he loved most: learning Torah. The long night begins. The Rebbe is alone in his room. Night falls, and everything is quiet. The room is filled with holiness. The table that had been covered with kvitlech (written requests for blessings) is now cleared. Hundreds of Jews pass through, crying out and pleading for salvation. Each one carries his own chapter of pain. With holiness and awe of Heaven, the Rebbe rules, blesses, and prays that lives be spared from death. Here, a widow. There, another heartbreaking kvitel. Now he sits with his greatest delight. The righteous leader of the generation, the great guide, his entire mind immersed in Torah. The warrior in the battle for faith, the pillar of unwavering conviction. These are his finest hours, completely absorbed in devotion, burning with a holy fire. Another day, no easier than the last. The Rebbe never closes his door. Such is the responsibility of the great leader of the generation. While everyone else is lost in dreams, the Rebbe sits, immersed in Torah, floating through the vast sea of the Talmud, free of worry. With all his strength and holy fire, the tzaddik gives of himself completely. Upon his table lies a mountain of pain and suffering. But at night, when the world is asleep, the Rebbe rises ever higher, sitting and learning with deep joy and sweetness. Even today, as he basks in the radiance of the Divine Presence, V’Yoel Moshe and his Torah are with him. In the heavenly realms, he sits with his Gemara. Until this very day, his sweet voice of Torah still echoes: “Yadin, yadin. Yoreh, yoreh.” Another question. Another answer. Another profound insight.
