Shomron - Shechem Gratitude in the Holy Land With Franny Waisman TYH Nation Welcome to Samaria, the Shomron! Many of the cities of the ancient world were located here, including Shechem right behind us. Starting from Avrohom, to Yaakov, to Yosef (still buried in Shechem today) as Jews, our story has been tied to the city of Shechem from the beginning. And today, focusing on gratitude, we're going to talk about Yisrael. After 22 years of being in exile in the house of Lavan, Yaakov is finally able to come back to Eretz Yisrael. How does he come back into the land? Through the beautiful valley of Tirtza near Shechem. This valley is so beautiful that when Shlomo Hamelech wrote Shir Hashirim, he used the word "Tirtza" as synonymous with beauty! And so Yaakov goes to Shechem, “ויחן שלם” and he dwells complete. What does this “shalem” mean? Rashi says that he comes complete in body; no physical harm, money; in full wealth, and in his Torah. He wasn't influenced in the house of Lavan. And Yaakov comes back, and he's so grateful that he wants to fix things. And because of this deep gratitude, he inspires a leader 1,500 years in the future... But for that, we'll have to go up North. Follow me! -- Did you know? Shechem sits at the intersection of two main roads of the ancient world (which made it a natural hub for trade and commerce), has beautiful, natural sources of water, and is surrounded by fertile valleys... really important thousands of years ago!
