Mariachi Jerusalem is a unique and fascinating musical project founded by the Venezuelan Jewish musician, Yochanan Peretz, and his wife Sarah, after their Aliyah to Israel. Recognizing the absence of the mariachi genre in Israel, they decided to form the first and only group of its kind in the country. Over the years, the Mariachi Jerusalem has gained popularity not only among the Latin American Jewish community but also in Israeli's society at large. In addition to their outstanding performances, the Mariachi Jerusalem has ventured into producing Jewish music with influences from this Mexican genre. They have breathed new life into traditional songs such as Shalom Aleichem, Boi Kala, Ner Li, and Vehisheamda, blending the traditional with the Jewish. The group has stood out for their collaborations with renowned singers, including Lidor Ram Mesika, a talented Israeli opera singer, Gustavo Quiñones, originally from Colombia, and Yosef Daniel, known for his religious pop music. These collaborations have enriched their repertoire and contributed to their growing recognition both in Israel and abroad. The Mariachi Jerusalem has achieved significant milestones, such as their participation in the International Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2022, where they were the first Israeli mariachi group to cross the Atlantic to represent Israel. They have brought their music to various stages and festivals in Israel and abroad, including the Jewish Music Festival in December 2023. Their mission is to bring the mariachi genre to the Israeli audience, combining it with Hebrew lyrics to make it more accessible and relevant to the local audience.
