R' Shaya was born in 1925 in Serdehel, which was in Czechoslovakia, near Pressburg and Kerestir. His father, a Satmar chosid, was the town's shochet and chazan, and had served as hoiz bochur to the Rebbe Reb Yoel. He first began his career as a shaliach tzibur for the yomim noraim as a teenager, and continues to do so at age 100 (k"h) in Flatbush.
