A partner handed Evan Scharf a $350 a month bookkeeping engagement. He took it to prove a point. That partner sent him a $3,500 client, that client's CFO told a friend, and eight years later one of those referrals was billing $30,000 a month. More than 400 clients later, not one has come from an advertisement. On this episode of Mind Your Business, Yitzchok Saftlas talks with Evan Scharf, CPA, Founder and CEO of CedarRock Advisory Group, about financial storytelling and why a number on a page is worth nothing until someone can tell you what it means. Evan shares why he walked out of a Deloitte job interview after twenty minutes, the accounts receivable mistake that leaves profitable businesses short on cash, what a bank is actually evaluating when you apply for a loan, and what his team does every single time a vendor's wire instructions change. He breaks down the real difference between a bookkeeper, a controller, and a CFO, and which one most owners actually need. And for the executive directors of nonprofits and schools, he explains why the hours you spend on payroll and bill pay are the most expensive hours in your organization. Plus the story of a baseball hat in Colorado that says everything about how people misread numbers. Shea Rubenstein asked a better question: "What industry lets me make a great living even if I'm only in the top 50 percent?" That question changed everything for him. In this special on-location episode of Mind Your Business with Yitzchok Saftlas, recorded live at the JCON Real Estate Summit at the Hilton in Staten Island, Yitzchok sits down with Shea Rubenstein, the driving force behind JCON since day one, for an extended conversation in the VIP room. They cover the entrepreneurial mindset, why $10,000 in startup capital matters far less than most people think, how to hire and delegate, what actually separates a business owner from someone who is simply self-employed, and how to handle rejection in sales without burning out. On pricing, Shea offers advice that runs against instinct. When a prospect says you are too expensive, do not fight them. Agree with them, then ask to walk through the budget together and understand what matters most to them. Making it about the relationship instead of the dollars took his closing rate above 95 percent. He also shares the networking approach that works: skip the pitch entirely, lead with a genuine compliment, ask about them, and find a way to add value before you ever mention what you sell. As he puts it, if you try to sell people, they are not interested. Become their friend, and they are. Also in this episode, Yitzchok works the JCON floor for rapid-fire conversations with entrepreneurs, brokers, business owners, and media veterans on what is actually driving growth in their industries. In this episode, you'll learn:- Why your first job is your Harvard education- How to choose an industry with real upside- The networking opener that works, and the one that kills the conversation- How to price your work without competing on price- Why rejection is a numbers game, and how to set expectations before you start- The delegation mindset that separates owners from operators Featuring:- Shea Rubenstein, JCON Also on the show:- Frankie J. A better question is: "Where are we trying to go?" In this episode of Mind Your Business with Yitzchok Saftlas, Yossi Fischler, President of CNSLT, and Jonah Halper, President of ALTRUICITY and author of Magnetic Vision, discuss the strategic decisions that can determine whether a capital campaign succeeds or struggles long before the first pledge is made. They talk about why organizations often limit their vision based on assumptions about donor capacity, how major donors assess ambitious projects, why some leaders become stuck in "paralysis by analysis," and how delaying decisions can have significant costs for the very people an organization aims to serve. One of the most surprising insights from the conversation is how often organizations underestimate what donors are willing to support. In one instance, a prospect expected to be approached for a six-figure gift indicated a willingness to contribute at the seven-figure level simply because the right questions were asked. For Executive Directors, Development Directors, Board Presidents, school leaders, shul leadership, and nonprofit professionals, this episode provides practical advice on building confidence, aligning stakeholders, and turning vision into reality.
