You'd never talk to your chavrusa's bad pshat gently — so why is that the exact tone you can't use at home? Chazal obligate a man to honor his wife even more than himself — the Rambam brings it l'halacha — and Rabbi Klapper unpacks what that actually demands. Real consideration isn't "I wouldn't mind if someone did this to me," because a woman is far more sensitive; it means thinking about what she can handle. You can shred a weak svara across the shtender from your chavrusa, but the same sharp line aimed at your wife is simply onaas devarim. And it's not only words — a small, careless comment can turn a person off for years, just as a warm one can turn them around. The heart of the episode is a real-life case: a husband furious over his wife's very expensive, purely emotional purchase. Rabbi Klapper's counsel — if you're not returning it anyway, don't attack emotion with logic and poison the item forever. First, tell her you'll enjoy it too. Then, a calm week later, sit down and go over the budget together, where there's finally room for seichel. He ties it back to the foundation of a home: refined, edel speech set at the very beginning shapes everything that follows — children absorb it (the soldier who literally couldn't drive on Shabbos), and a husband must guard his wife's feelings most of all, "because her tears come easily." Have you ever looked back and realized you've been sleepwalking through your own story? The Gemara in Eruvin delivers a shocking truth: it might have been better never to be born—unless we seize the chance to "check our ways" while we still can. Yet most of us shy away from that mirror, preferring comfortable narratives to hard truths. What hidden detours have you been taking? How different would your choices be if you paused to ask, "Is this the right path for my nefesh?" This episode will guide you through the crucial steps of cheshbon nefesh—defining what deserves your commitment and courageously comparing that to your daily reality. Can you mourn something you don't understand? Just before the kinos, Rabbi Klapper admits something honest: he could not understand Kina Vav — the sixth kina, a poetic acrostic that begins only at the letter Samech. And it's not the only one. Many kinos are simply beyond our grasp, especially in their difficult Hebrew. But the key was never the words. Even when we cannot connect to the language, we can still connect to the pnimius — the soul, the pain, the sorrow the kinos represent. And that pain, Rabbi Klapper says, is all around us. Our post-Holocaust generation was uniquely sheltered — 75 years of relative calm to rebuild the Torah world — but we are now back inside the mainstream of Jewish history, facing the same hatred Jews have faced for 2,000 years. And more painful still: some of our own are working to cut us off from our life source, trampling Torah and spitting on those who keep it. He anchors it in the Tochacha of Bechukosai and Rashi's reading — "we do not listen" means we do not toil in Torah — and in the Ramban's chilling observation on Eicha: he saw something worse than mothers eating their children; he saw mothers feeding their children chazir. The Haftarah's answer from Yirmiyahu is blunt: the land was lost "because you left My Torah." Even our personal pain — the illness, the young people adrift in the streets searching for satisfaction in the sewer — flows from the same distance from Hashem. Tisha B'Av is the day to face our reality and cry, to take stock of who we are and where we are holding, and to channel that pain into tefillah. Are you ready to truly recognize where you are? Take a seat on the floor and listen. Hosted by Rabbi Ari Klapper and produced by Eli Podcast Productions, this episode is part of the Real Judaism series, available on RealJudaism.org. Do your mitzvos sometimes feel like empty rituals rather than soul-fueling acts? The Ramchal teaches that performing a mitzvah without genuine kavanah is like drinking from a mirage—on the surface you're "doing" the commandment, but your nefesh remains thirsty. We may rush through Purim l'chayims or recite brachos by rote, yet miss the heart of the avodah. How often do we pause to ask, "Am I fulfilling this mitzvah for its true purpose or just to check a box?" This episode will guide you to excavate the inner life of your mitzvos, transforming duty into delight so each commandment becomes a genuine encounter with Hashem.
