Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode One ~ ! The Introduction to this classic text and primarily addresses the question of whether having Bitachon = Trust in G-d Actually Necessary. Further to what has already been presented regarding the fulfillment of multiple Mitzvot, we are informed that “Living Trustfully” provides many other Positive “Side-Effects” as well. We also further explore why might the author chose to make the case for Bitachon's importance by emphasizing its many benefits rather than its obligatory status in Judaism? Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seven ~ ! Before moving onto detailed technical strategies of implementing "True Trust" there's a major "Trust Issue" that needs to be dealt with, defined, and resolved. INVINCIBLE ME

Jun 3, 2021

1:19:13

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eight ~ ! Regarding "True Trust" in G-d, R' Bachaya establishes the principle that its efficacy is dependent on it being experienced in Monochromatic Monogamy. Anything less singular or absolute causes G-d to remove His Providence. But does that mean that Hashem disengages? And, if that statement is to be taken at face value, can it jibe with the Baal ShemTovonian idea that Individual Providence and Divine Design is always at play with G-d "bringing existence into being each moment?" Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Nine ~ ! R' Bachaya makes a bold claim: "True Trust" mean singular , sole and absolute reliance on G-d alone. The Burden of Proof still upon him, R' Bachaya now bolsters the notion that trusting reliance on an entity other than G-d will necessarily cause the removal of Divine Providence. BLESSED vs. CURSED

Jun 10, 2021

1:02:54

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eleven . ~ ! In his final thrust to satisfy the Burden of Proof still upon him, R' Bachaya weaves a surprising tapestry of kindred scriptural strands vividly illustrating a picture of "True Trust" that doesn't leave room for neutral colors or middle ground, because ultimately, trusting in Hashem is a Sum Zero Pursuit. In this now sharply defined landscape, it becomes abundantly clear that Trust-Inclusivity can never be a Virtue, rather a debilitating Demerit that diminishes our blessings! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

FOLLY TO BE WISE

Jun 11, 2021

1:04:43

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twelve ~ ! Having established the singular nature of Bitachon Basics with the notion that we are relying on, or trusting in anything other G-d necessarily detracts from and even diminishes our unique Divine downflow of sustenance, vitality and blessing, the author now moves to identify specifics. The first form of debilitating Trust-Inclusivity occurs when people rely on their own wisdom and wherewithal, although everyone one knows that Smart People Don’t Always Finish First! In fact, wisdom can easily become foolishness when Highly Intelligent People place Trust in their Talent instead of in G-d -- the true and singular source of success and sustenance! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

THE SEEKER

Jun 14, 2021

1:23:05

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirteen ~ ! In the previous Episode, we introduced the principal that wisdom and cunning cannot to be relied upon for success, because in truth success comes solely from G-d’s blessings. This doesn't mean we aren't required to make natural efforts; Torah necessarily mandates toil as we aren't permitted to "Rely on Miracles" to receive our unique Divine downflow of sustenance, vitality, and blessing. This idea is now further developed and clarified as we move from reliance on intelligence and acumen to strength and talent. In summation, while we must do our part, we must always be mindful of the true fount of our sustenance and place trust solely in G-d -- the singular source of any success we are fortunate enough to receive! MONEY NEVER SLEEPS

Jun 15, 2021

1:10:56

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fourteen ~ ! In previous Episodes, we clarified the folly of relying on wisdom or talent to avoid anxiety over the future because neither ensures success, which comes solely from G-d's blessings. Now we address the notion that money should not be relied upon either. Although wealth can buy many things, due to its transitory nature the one thing it can never purchase is certainty or security. Ultimately, real inner peace can only be achieved through trusting in the only true source of goodness -- Al-mighty G-d Himself. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD

Jun 16, 2021

1:15:44

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifteen ~ ! In previous Episodes, we analyzed the folly of relying on money to avoid anxiety over the future. The biblical premise of folly revolved around the transitory nature of money. As they say, "it can go as quickly as it comes." Prophetic insight ordains that financial gains or even great affluence can vanish overnight. As such the argument was made Certainty should be sought and found only in the Omnipotent, Al-mighty G-d Himself! In this Episode, we will take this idea much further we continue to address the notion that money should not be relied upon . Even if wealth wouldn't take flight, as its transitory nature isn't that always so obvious, our Scriptures spell out the reasons it still offers no guarantee of happiness, inner satisfaction or even peace of mind. Great emphasis is placed on the truism that the tranquil coveted state of being can only be achieved through Bitachon in the only truly trusted source of goodness -- Hashem! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Learn how you can achieve liberty from those who might otherwise dominate, shackle, or enslave us. Indirect prophetic insight frames the logical conclusions of how we might behave when Faith is internalized and distilled into Trust. Here, the truthful notion of Bitachon serving to set us free is vividly illustrated and spelled out in the clearest of terms. Ultimately, you can really achieve the independence you crave, but only if you are ready to take that leap of faith through full reliance in the only truly trusted source of goodness -- Hashem! PEER PRESSURE

Jun 22, 2021

1:36:49

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventeen ~ ! In the previous episode, we've already elaborated on the notion that Relying on others for Livelihood may cause you to Flatter or Imitate Inappropriate Behavior. We learnt how Bitachon can free you of this form of servitude! We now open a new vistas by looking at the notion of debilitating Peer Pressures that can ultimately only be alleviated by... You guessed it Bitachon! The author draws on Prophet expression to prove and confirm this is rock-solid advice to live by!! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

FEAR NO MORE

Jun 23, 2021

1:24:48

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighteen ~ ! We've learnt that internalizing the ideals of Bitachon can free you from the need to flatter powerful, yet bad people. It can even enable resolute courage to stare down negative peer pressure. We will now learn how the Bitachon and Certainty in G-d as your sole Provider must also Free You from Fearing Others Forever! You read right! Total Trust in Hashem will empower you to the point you are able to Speak Truth to Power --when it is the right thing to do --and never again be intimidated again!! Rabbeinu Bachaya will use numerous verses of our sacred scripture to vividly illustrate why he is so sure you can, or more accurately speaking, you MUST overcome fear. This the nature of this illuminated pathway he is teaching you to trustfully take. Moreover, this creates the conduit for the supra-natural blessings it enables us to receive! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

PEACE OF MIND

Jun 23, 2021

1:18:46

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Nineteen ~ ! We now move onto the next big benefit Bitachon provides its bearer: the serenity and peace of mind of only a person a whose livelihood is secure can afford. Simply stated: having real Trust in Hashem will necessarily equal living with less worry and anxiety. Quite literally! Rabbeinu Bachaya depicts the person who successfully achieves "Absolute Bitachon" as one who is able to Live with a sense of "Total Security" eliminating a huge concern that eats many people alive, instead enabling to truly feel alive! THE ALCHEMIST

Jun 24, 2021

1:12:40

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty ~ ! We continue to frame Bitachon's Benefits by means of a Medieval Metaphor. Yet, as it turns out, the person possessing real Trust in Hashem has even less to worry about than one who could magically transfom cheap materials into precious metals. In fact, the truly trusting individual's inner tranquility is by far superior to the mythical alchemist who would theoretically enjoy peace of mind as a result of his guaranteed source of plentiful Parnassa. In addition to demonstrating the Real Clear Power of Bitachon through the Illusionary Lenses of an Imaginative Reality, Rabbeinu Bachaya curiously chooses to employ the Manna metaphor to make his point and richly illustrate the good fortune of one who has successfully achieved "Absolute Bitachon! " Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

THE SHELTERING DESERT

Jun 29, 2021

1:42:29

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-One ~ ! Our Emotive Spiritual Mandate to strive towards greater Trust in Hashem was taught to us in the infancy of our nationhood with the decades long Manna Miracle. To further the pragmatic application of that powerful lessons and to highlight the incredibly good fortune of successfully achieving "Absolute Bitachon" we move forward into the life and times of the prophets Elijah and Obadiah. Although presenting ancient stories, it seems abundantly clear that Rabbeinu Bachaya wishes to emphasize that G-d’s Limitless Ability to is not Limited to Antiquity or Overt Miracles. By directing our attention to, and encouraging us to carefully contemplate a selection of dramatic - yet not entirely miraculous - Biblical narratives that are rooted in the rock-solid Bitachon of the central actors, he continues to make the case for Total Trust in Hashem, today! WORKING MAN’S DEATH

Jun 29, 2021

1:26:10

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Two ’ ~ ! Rabbeinu Bachaya returns to contrasting the peace of mind and tranquility attained by the Alchemist with the person who has attained Absolute Trust in Hashem. Despite the latter's relatively easy quick-get-rich schemes, the reality of every vocation’s occupational hazard and the possibility of a workplace accident are a cause of continuous anxiety. Not so the person living with Bitachon who is the only one capable of reaching true tranquility! A fascinating look into the one of the most famous Psalms confirms and emphasizes the veracity of his Faith and Trust Theology once again making a strong case for placing ones Trust in Hashem, always! A FANTASTIC FEAR OF EVERYTHING

Jun 30, 2021

1:13:58

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Three ~ ! Rabbeinu Bachaya continues his contrast of the "Alchemist" and the "Person of Faith" who achieves Absolute Trust in Hashem. The contrast is designed to further sketch the portrait illustrating the latter's superiority in attaining true peace of mind. Despite the Alchemist's relatively easy road to prosperity, he is disturbed by a terrific flood of continuous anxiety. Thoughtful analysis leads us to understand that those who “Have it Made” are far from reaching “Inner Peace.” That's because as they invariably become fearful that others will discover their secrets, they become victims of their own success! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

AIR, LAND AND SEA

Jul 2, 2021

1:27:42

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty- Four , ~ ! In sharp contrast with the "Alchemist," who is ever concerned about the future as he worries and experiences anxiety about various possible scenarios and unforeseen circumstances, the "Person of Faith" lives with a true sense of inner peace. Fully relying on G-d for his needs, he has absolute Trust that Hashem will sustain and provide for him. His life is therefore free of worry and anxiety! Rabbeinu Bachaya frames this idea with the faith-based view of G-d being the Sole Source of Sustenance across the full spectrum of our material reality from the Lowliest-Embryos to Highest-Flying Birds. From deepest seas to densest geologies there is only One True Provider who continually sustains all life despite their seemingly frail nature. A series of stirring scriptural verses emphasize this truism and ultimately buttress the idea that the person who has Bitachon has no reason to be fearful! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

GROUND CONTROL

Jul 5, 2021

1:34:53

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Five ~ ! The lucky "Alchemist" is yet again contrasted with the "Person of Faith." While the former is always fearful of people, afraid of his surroundings and terrified of the powers-to-be, the latter is publicly and proudly able to share his secret to inner serenity. Instead of fearing his environment, this is a person who is relaxed about his future, as he places full trust in Hashem and experiences a total lack of fear. He remains forever calm and is afraid of nothing! Rabbeinu Bachaya maintains that ultimately all earthly powers seek to dominate, control or even harm us, and only full Bitachon can free us from fearing them. People, animals, and even inanimate objects may threaten our well-being, yet if we place total trust in Hashem, He will shield and protect us from all harm. He powerfully illustrates this Faith Truism by referencing stirring scriptural verses clearly articulate the idea that the person possessing Faithful Trust has no reason to be fearful, as he will be shielded by G-d Himself! WITNESS INFECTION

Jul 7, 2021

1:30:40

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Six ~ ! The Sixth Stage of Superiority belonging to the "Person of Faith" in contrast with the metaphoric "Alchemist" revolves around the concerns people always have about the ever-lurking possibility of infection, dysfunction, and disease. Ultimately, Wealth Cannot Buy Health and Money Gives No Guarantees! Health Deterioration naturally robs people of their happiness and impairs their ability to enjoy accumulated wealth and material possessions. Pure trust in Hashem provides an elevated vision of life, enabling even ordinary people to transcend these organic inhibitors of terrestrial fulfillment. Trusting in Hashem’s goodness grants a purposeful perspective on sickness and suffering that transforms the impact of these otherwise unpleasant and painful experiences. Drawing on stirring scripture about the futility of physical strength and the spirit of force which ultimately weakens verses the boundless force of spirit that fuels hope and optimism, Rabbeinu Bachaya uses prophetic poetry to complete sketching his portrait demonstrating the unparalleled power of Faithful Trust in Hashem! THE HUNGER

Jul 7, 2021

1:13:15

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Seven ~ ! Although the metaphorical "Alchemist" might indeed have access to endless financial resources, the trusting "Person of Faith" is still far more secure, as wealth does not always translate into sustenance or satiation. Rabbeinu Bachaya illustrates this with harsh words uttered by our prophets, and sadly, our history has borne tragic testimony to this Torah truism. To be sure, possession of riches seems to guarantee safety, security, and satiation as one assumes hard cash has limitless purchasing powers, yet Big Bucks can’t always stock the Pantry and the cold facts are that all the money in the world may be useless in times of famine. Conversely, People of Bitachon (those privileged with pure trust in Hashem) are prophetically assured that He will always provide for them, in ALL times – even in the most calamitous of days. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

TRANSIENT

Jul 8, 2021

1:36:00

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Eight ~ ! as in previous episodes, we continue highlight the various virtues available only to the Ba’al HaBitachon – the person of True Faith, by framing his fortune with that of the proverbial Alchemist. The latter, fearful of his Trade Secrets being discovered will always be on the move. Whether this is to be understood in the most literal of fashions, or even as a euphemism for lack of stability and the feeling of discomfort with his environment – the result is same: here is a transient who cannot stay put and relax, but rather is in constantly changing scenery. Sheltering the secret to his wealth can uncomfortably set him in into motion. The faithful individual who places his trust in G-d experiences the very opposite – an idea which is vividly illustrated in the Scriptures themselves. Moving into a related idea; not only does having Bitachon keep you settled during your terrestrial life, but it also richly provides for your Eternity too. Anxiety over trade secrets and the unique ability to make money not only unsettles a person here, but the benefits also obtained are evanescent and temporary as no one can take it along with them to Heaven either! FATAL SECRET

Jul 12, 2021

1:35:16

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Nine ~ ! We now conclude the Ten Point study-in-contrast highlighting the superiority and virtues of the Ba’al HaBitachon – the person of True Faith, with that of the proverbial Alchemist. The latter, hiding his Trade Secrets from being discovered is essentially a scheming and shady entrepreneur playing Russian Roulette, risking his life in the mix. How precisely this danger is to be understood is a source of contention amongst scholars, but it is clear that in Rabbainu Bachaya’s view the attractive proposition of “Quick Money” is invariably associated with serious risk of danger that can easily turn deadly in the most literal sense. Conversely, the individual who chooses to live with full trust in Hashem has nothing to hide. In fact, quite to the contrary, his proud and public display of Bitachon brings him respect and bountiful blessings, not danger or threats. His trust in G-d come with no adverse side effects, and expressing Faith is always a Risk-Free Endeavor. This idea of the Person-of-Faith serving as a source of blessing and global goodness is rooted in a powerful Scriptural statement, even more vividly illustrated in the brushstrokes of a dramatic biblical narrative. SATISFACTION

1:37:43

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirty ~ ! Having concluded mapping the 10 points of superiority and virtues of the Ba’al HaBitachon – the person of True Faith, with that of the proverbial Alchemist, Rabbainu Bachaya now introduces yet another “Torah” advantage possessed only by one who lives with absolute Trust in Hashem. LET'S FACE IT: or better or for worse, money is on most people’s minds. The big question however is, does having that coveted buying power actually satisfy anyone? Here we will discover that rich or poor, it is only by dint of proper Bitachon that one can find true satisfaction. The author provides us with a radical and foremost counterintuitive perspective on wealth, charitable giving and our divinely assigned duties and responsibilities. This elevated reconceptualization of affluence and purpose enables People-of-Faith to properly view, appreciate and find satisfaction in their individual measure blessing and success. These empowering faith-based perspectives are drawn from a pious person’s prayer, and clearly framed by the words of our Sages and illustrated by the biblical wisdom of King Solomon. THE CARETAKER

1:41:48

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirty-One ~ ! Rabbainu Bachaya now introduces yet a fourth life-affirming “Torah” advantage achieved by one who lives with proper Bitachon; absolute Trust in Hashem. Human Beings, by their very nature endlessly obsess over finances. And most often, having money, or losing it takes a serious toll on one’s ethical persona and character. Ambitious pursuit of wealth can easily blind and corrupt, while its attainment can pridefully pervert even previously humble and sensitive people. Is it possible for ordinary men and women to successfully maintain healthy, balanced spiritual stamina or moral equilibrium despite achieving extraordinary affluence and plenty? The Sha’ar HaBitachon says yes and shows us how! With a proper Faith-based and Trusting attitude we can nurture our inner soulful strength, courage, and conviction. He provides us the Torah timeless answers we need to an ageless conundrum that has plagued humanity for millennia. If wealth can wreak havoc on people’s spiritual stature, losing money can be even more painful and debilitating. By providing us with an elevated perspective on acquisition of wealth, the author empowers us to reframe your perspective and view things right, because by having Bitachon that one can find the truest inner fulfillment regardless of superficial circumstances. To be sure, the importance of these insightful ideas cannot be overemphasized, because when all is said and done, money can materialize overnight, and it can also disappear as quickly as it came. This cycle of life or proverbial turning wheel of fortune can cause endless anxiety for the rich and profound pain for the impoverished. Developing and maintaining proper Bitachon vaporizes those worries and endows people the strength to cope even equally flourish in fortune or famine alike! And as King Solomon wisely illustrates, possessing profound faith-based perspectives allows people to transcend jealous envy of others have and find contentment in what they have. Having completed illustrating the numerous life-affirming “Torah” advantage (e. g. the enabling of greatest success in the arena of “Avodat Hashem” = fulfilling one’s spiritual destiny and the higher purpose of our creation), Rabbeinu Bachaya now moves to demonstrate how living with proper Bitachon will simply make one’s terrestrial life easier and more enjoyable. People by their very nature are always on the prowl, looking to experience pleasure and thereby happiness. Invariably, and perhaps somewhat counterintuitively, this constant movement robs them of the very Peace of Mind they also crave. The relentless search for more, materially speaking, often leads the seeker into experiencing stress, anxiety, and unhappiness. Here we learn that absolute Trust in Hashem necessarily relieves you of those very concern and enables you to live calmly with no worries. Rabbeinu Bachaya makes the astounding assertion: only true Trust in Hashem will necessarily enable you to experience a stress-free, happy life. Nurturing real Bitachon is the greatest investment you will ever make because it can uniquely grant you a remarkable level of Peace of Mind that simply cannot ever be achieved without Faithful Trust! Our proper and careful study of the specific words chosen by the celebrated author and his illustrious translator, allow us to fully to appreciate the Prophetic quotes that qualify his ground-breaking supposition. Indeed, Jeremiah affirms and certifies his faith-based resolution! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Three , # " " ~ ! As the entire gamut of the Seven Criteria necessary to inspire the unreserved and absolute trust we call Bitachon, is now fully articulated, its understood that a truly trusted provider would have to posses them all. The obvious question there is: are there any people who posses them all (even if only) sometimes? And, if not, is there anyone who possesses even one all these qualities, all the time? Rabbeinu Bachaya will continue to patiently spell things out for us, until we ourselves conclude that there can be only one Provider in whom we should place our full confidence. In this episode we will cover the first three (or four) of the previously enumerated requisite qualities; Compassion, Attentiveness, Strength (and Wisdom/Intuition). Yet, to be sure, it will already be overwhelmingly clear that only G-d can Possess all these qualities - required to earn true Trust - of all the time! Arriving at the obvious conclusion of who is deserving of our Trust we should be increasingly motivated to start seriously building our Bitachon! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Four , # ~ ! Following his systematic presentation of the seven categories of qualities necessary to place unfailing Trust in a powerful provider, Rabbeinu Bachaya lucidly demonstrated how the first can only be found in G-d. He now continues to spell things out in ever increasing certainty gently enabling us to appreciate why he concludes that Hashem is only Provider we should place our full confidence in. In this episode we focus on the final (previously enumerated) requisite qualities, Consistency, Absolute Control and unfailing Generosity and Kindness. The verses quoted will be demonstrably clear in indicating that only G-d can Possess all the qualities that true Trust demands. Bottom line: Absolute reliance on a provider, an essential quality to engender real Trust means the provider must always be available when we need. Can anybody else always be there for us? Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Five , # ~ ! After lucidly articulating the seven categories of criteria necessary to engender Trust in a Provider, Rabbeinu Bachaya demonstrates why If common sense logic prevails, it’s [only] "In G-d We [can] Trust" as the analysis clearly shows how only Hashem possesses all the requisite qualities true Trust requires. In presenting his rational thesis that invariably leads to the idea that only G-d can be relied on and is deserving of our Trust, he quotes a wide variety of biblical verses to prove his point. In this episode we focus on the need for those scripture citations. After all, if it's so logical a conclusion, why is there a need for all the biblical sources as proof that only G-d can Possess all the qualities that true Trust demands. Sha'ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Six , # ~ ! Despite the incredible power of Pure Clear Faith, Rabbeinu Bachaya surprises us with his introductory statement of the third chapter; Building our Bitachon (essentially a faith-based Trust in G-d) is going to require much more than Blind Faith! After laying the (previously introduced) solid seven-layer foundation, one might have thought that the Structure of our “Trust Psyche” could now be built. Yet clearly the author believed that, not withstanding the fully articulated categories of necessary trust criteria, a critical component is still missing. This all, it must be emphasized, is despite the detailed scriptural references and common-sense logic already presented. In this episode we focus on the need for and importance of achieving not only a spiritual and cerebral connection with the Creator, but also a profound emotional relationship as well. As we will discover, then, and only then, can we hope to Build our Bitachon and bring about lasting inner change that will grant us the tranquility and peace of mind that true Trust in Hashem is all about. 1:38:34

Sha'ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Seven , ~ ! Having established that the healthy and lasting development of real Bitachon can only be planted and nurtured in field of one's emotional endeavours. Only once deep and faithful roots are sunk into the fertile soil of the heart can a person's Trust in Hashem properly blossom. The knowledge that is primarily be an emotional effort and undertaking serves to clarify why the seven requisite criteria that allow for trust to grow must be repeated (in a different order) and entirely reframed. Here Rabbeinu Bachaya speaks to the heart and strum the emotive strings of the soul. The first of the qualities to be re-imagined: Rachamim or Compassion. Is this concept Divine or Humane at its Core? That is to say; when a person experiences profound feeling of truly merciful compassion is that reflective of our Creator Himself, or is it primarily a heartfelt form of Human Expression? The astounding thesis that emerges rotates the popular western image on its head and re-casts Mercy it a remarkable new light, ultimately demonstrating why is so foundational a step in Building Bitachon within ourselves! This restatement of the idea that a to place trust in a provider, you'd have to be certain they know your needs will persuasively lead us to a common sense conclusion: If an entity’s creator will always know it best, then our Omnipotent Creator of not only the form but the very essence of existence itself undoubtedly always Knows Better than Anyone Else! Rabbeinu Bachaya continues to weave his unique tapestry of faith-inspired logic and scripture in heartfelt yet lucid terms. The fourth requisite quality about Hashem's undivided attentiveness is presented, an it too leads to the same conclusion: Only G-d is deserving of our unreserved Trust! Because no matter how much your trusted friend cares for you there's always the chance they may be preoccupied by other things. Yet Hashem is never overwhelmed and always focuses on you. MISSION CONTROL

Oct 27, 2021

1:33:46

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-One , ~ ! In this episode, another important and foundational axiom of our Torah Faith is highlighted to further underscore the idea of singular Trust in G-d (Bitachon). This too is conveyed in terms that address our emotional intelligence, and the message is articulated in lucid terms that are easy to personalize in resonate fashion. Here we focus on recognizing and appreciating the truth about Hashem's Exclusive Control over absolutely everything. Rabbeinu Bachaya maintains, with absolute certainty, that no Human Being (despite the freedom of choice we are divinely endowed) has any ability to do anything to or for anyone else unless G-d wants him to. And as such; "only in Him is it appropriate to place our unreserved and total Trust!" This is intended quite literally: No one can do anything without His Permission, no human being can harm or help you unless Al-mighty G-d ordains it so. Logically then, one should never put their trust in anyone else except Hashem – and that's exactly what we refer to when we speak of Bitachon! This will lead us into experiencing true Trust in G-d, e.g., Bitachon. Rabbeinu Bachaya believed that focus on our Creator's Boundless Kindness would necessarily lead us into Trust. In sharp contrast to people's kindness that invariably isn't dispensed with purest of intentions and comes with expectations of reciprocity. The Creator’s kindness, however, has no hidden agendas or limits! Appropriately awareness will inspire us to place our unreserved and total Trust in Hashem. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

CHAIN OF EVENTS

1:46:28

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Three , ~ ! In this episode, we are directed to contemplate, absorb, and internalize the mind-boggling truth about Hashgacha Pratis (Individual Divine Providence) Hashem's absolute control and supervision of all that happens. Real, clear awareness of this leads us to place unreserved and blissful reliance on G-d, which as we have learnt defines the concept of Bitachon. Here, we discover Rabbeinu Bachaya's stunning illustration of the Torah truism; All Lives Matter -- in complete Harmony with Global Events! Hashem manages our lives from beginning to end. No one has control over their own longevity, affluence, or success. Incredibly, everything around us is pre-ordained in concert. He clearly believed that focusing on this would necessarily lead us into experiencing total Trust in Hashem.

DRIVING FORCE

Nov 8, 2021

1:35:23

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Four , ~ ! The Global System of Cause and Effect doesn't overtly reveal the presence of the Creator. G-d, in effect, conceals His harmonious management of all existence and every event. This leads some to the erroneous conclusion that reality is governed by independent causes, and that Hashem is disengaged from His creation. In this episode, Rabbeinu Bachaya seeks to disabuse us of this misguided notion by directing to focus on and contemplate the weak and inconsequential nature of most causes. The changes or transformation they engender, or spawn clearly indicate the guidance and power of a Higher Force. Understanding this helps us arrive at an appreciation of the truth about Hashem's absolute control and supervision of all that happens. For although the universe may seem to be driven in a random Cause-and-Effect fashion, with disparate happenings triggering indiscriminate results, the truth is that our Creator remains in full control, and everything is always being choreographed by Divine Design. Internalizing this concept will undoubtedly lead us towards achieving Trust in Hashem, and effectively enhance our Bitachon building abilities! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

BEFORE YOUR TIME

Nov 9, 2021

1:41:15

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Five , ~ ! G-d does not reveal His presence in Creation, choosing to obfuscate His harmonious management of all that happens. Yet, we believe that Hashem continually brings everything into existence, and runs all affairs of our reality. Always. Having established this in the present episode, Rabbeinu Bachaya now addresses those who anxiously burden and overexert themselves trying make things happen, rather than making reasonable efforts and leaving the rest to G-d. This, he believed, stems form a lack of understanding, weakness of conviction and deficiency in one's faith! Instead, we must achieve mindfulness of the truth about Hashem's absolute control and supervision of all that happens. Everything has its Season. Trying to Hasten it, is Futile and pointless. We must constantly remind ourselves that the Creator runs all our affairs. Getting anxious about the future, and trying to make things happen on your own timeline is a waste of time as ultimately even the timing of events is preordained by G-d! The culmination is a stunning tapestry of Scripture is presented to illustrate these Torah truism as we complete the first Trust Principle of this chapter. In conclusion we must recognize that Hashem alone possesses all Seven Criteria to foster Bitachon, from endless care and concern to complete control of everything. This will lead us to Trust in Hashem and enable us to Build our Bitachon!

TRUE HEART

Nov 11, 2021

1:42:13

Sha’ar HaBitachon Episode Fifty-Six , ~ ! Rabbeinu Bachaya opened this chapter by alluding to five foundational principles that must be internalized if one is to succeed at developing Trust and Building Bitachon. In this episode we are introduced to the second Faith Fundamental: Sincerity! Simply stated, Trust in G-d can only be effective and meaningful when it is a heartfelt and sincere expression of our convictions and beliefs. In fact, as it turns out, Bitachon must be wholehearted. Lip service paid to this lofty faith ideal is a pointless exercise and ultimately meaningless. Only by virtue of genuine trust can we achieve complete Reliance on Hashem! This is clearly demonstrated with uniquely braided strands of sacred Scripture them spell out the basis for this second Trust Principle.

PARTNERS IN HEALING

Nov 15, 2021

1:22:17

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Seven , ~ ! The chapter opened with the ides that there are Five Foundational Principles we must internalize to successfully develop Trust and Build our Bitachon. In this episode we are introduced to the third of five: "Trust Exclusivity" Rabbeinu Bachaya forcefully rejects Diversity in Trust, maintaining that it diminishes Monotheism, and can even lead to outright Polytheism. His position is clear: G-d can't be "Faith-Partnered." Building Bitachon is an Exclusive 'Sum Zero' Spiritual Endeavour. True Trust must translate itself as a constant Mindfulness of G-d being the Sole Master of Health, Wellness and Longevity. Big Tent Trust that would introduce a Combined Prescription of Reliance on G-d AND Doctors equals Less, not More as Bitachon is about Complete Reliance on Hashem ALONE! These lessons can be learnt from a unique story about an ancient ailing Monarch's Bitachon failure, as their veracity is further underscored by the precise language of benison employed by a great Prophet. To be sure, the story is introduced to demonstrate the clear biblical basis for this Trust Principle, yet it leads into an important discovery about the Torah True perspective on Medicine and the Art of Healing! MISPLACED TRUST

Nov 15, 2021

1:33:08

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Eight , ~ ! Amongst the Foundational Principles we must internalize to successfully nurture real Bitachon, is the critical concept of Trust Exclusivity. In this Episode we will continue to explore importance and meaning of this specific principle. Having made the case that Diversifying our Trust diminishes our relationship with Hashem, Rabbeinu Bachayar now concludes with a very different rational: Placing Trust in Multiple Providers will result in failure. Rather than bringing an added measure of security and success, it will typically backfire and weaken the outcome. The bottom line is that having Bitachon necessarily means placing our exclusive trust in G-d. regardless of how intuitively appealing and prudent it may seem to diversify our Trust investments, to including others in that circle may well result in Hashem choosing to abandon us to them! To be sure, the idea that "Big Tent Trust" can undermine and even ruins aspirations isn't new. In fact, a look at the precise language of employed by the great Prophet Jeremiah spells it out quite clearly. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

THE HONOURABLE REBEL

Nov 16, 2021

1:39:32

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Nine , ~ ! The Fourth Fundamental Principles to internalize if we are to successfully achieve the stunning results only Bitachon can bring us is serious Commitment to serving Hashem! In this episode we will explore the big question: Is "Trust in G-d" something Sinners can strive for, or does our Disobedience Blunt Our Bitachon Blessings entirely? Simply stated, can a less than perfect person still benefit from Trusting in Hashem? To be sure, Rabbainu Bachaya will forcefully dismiss the notion that we can simply rely on G-d’s kindness while flagrantly disobeying His Holy Will and Instructions. Yet to be equally sure, Rabbainu Bachaya has, and will continue to emphasize that the benefits of Bitachon aren't unique to a tiny circle of saintly Tzadikim; perfectly righteous and fully deserving individuals. The idea that brazenly ignoring Hashem instructions render one's Trust in Him less than effective isn't surprising. However, there certainly seems to more to the Blessings of Bitachon than a straightforward equation of punishment and Reward, and Divine Consequences. The answers to this seeming conundrum are anything but predictable or pedestrian. Rather, what emerges is a remarkable insightful synthesis and synergy of Torah truths! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

THE WHEELS KEEP ON TURNING

Nov 18, 2021

1:39:06

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty , ~ ! The Fifth Fundamental Principle is about how we are supposed to view and understand the nuanced interplay between Trust and Effort that can, at times, seem oxymoronic. On one hand, we are enjoined to rely exclusively on G-d, yet on the other hand required to make significant efforts to obtain our needs. In this episode we begin the development of our Bitachon conducive perspective by first exploring why we, Human Beings -- in sharp contrast with other forms of life (who needs are readily available) must toil incessantly to have our (even basic) needs met. We open with an illustration of two Divine dimensions: the delineation of differing methods of engagement with, and the directing of all existence. Contrasting G-d’s direct involvement with creation with His choice to catalyzes a Chain of Causes, ultimately designed to provide for us. Rabbainu Bachaya directs us to be mindful of the various steps that Hashem sets in motion lead us into particular reality which can often include a dazzling Domino Effect of both Direct and Distant Causes that effectively obfuscate his involvement! THE HUMAN FACTOR

Nov 21, 2021

1:15:20

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-One , ~ ! Internalizing the Fifth Fundamental Principle -- about the nuanced interplay between the efforts we human's must make, and the Trust in Hashem we must have -- hinges on our visualization G-d's global orchestration. Ultimately, the actions we are required to take also serve as cogs in the proverbial Turning Wheels of Hashem's ongoing Creation! This means that the Divinely Designed Reality of our existence may well necessitate thoughtful premeditated activity and intervention by human beings too. Our belief that Hashem runs the World with an exquisite Cause and Effect System, doesn’t take our efforts or even initiative out of orbit of the sphere of influence. Rather our activities comprise a key element of that very carefully choreographed process! In the previous episode we opened with an illustration of two Divine dimensions, delineating differing methods of Hashem's directing all existence. In this episode we continue the discussion about contrasting G-d’s direct involvement with creation with His choice to catalyzes a chain of causes that includes our actions too. Ultimately, both are designed by the Creator to provide sustenance for us. Mindful clarity about, and envisioning the various steps that Hashem sets in motion enables us to see past the dazzling Domino Effect of both Direct and Distant Causes to effectively recognize His constant involvement! THE TEST

Nov 23, 2021

1:39:05

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Two , ~ ! We've already established that Trust in Hashem means we must view the actions we are required to take, and the efforts we are required to make as simply playing our part in Hashem's ongoing supervision and direction of all reality! Clearly, the Divinely Designed Reality of the world necessitates intervention by human beings. Yet, if Hashem's blessing is our true source of sustenance why is it indeed so important for us to work so hard? In this episode we will develop an appreciation for the ordained necessity for us all to toil in order for us to Earn Our Daily Bread. After all, couldn't G-d just as easily have kindly arranged that our basic needs be readily available to us? This eye-opening and insightful discovery as to why Hashem makes us toil to obtain our Sustenance will change the way you view life forever!

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Three , ~ ! Placing Trust in Hashem doesn’t mean sitting on our hands folded and waiting for miracles. G-d runs the world but often will challenge us to make herculean efforts to obtain our livelihood. Yet these very challenges must be viewed as opportunities, that are orchestrated from on High to allow us the privilege of being Free to Choose Right! In this episode we will develop an appreciation for difficulties that Earning a Living entail. Ultimately, the hardships are beneficial, for if all our needs were effortlessly available, we would never fully appreciate the true gift of life. As a direct result of overcoming the many tests we face, we are each granted the ability to savour personal achievement! Rabbainu Bachaya contends that keeping busy prevents us from Decadence and Depravity! In this episode we will develop an appreciation for the difficulties invariably associated with Earning a Living entail. Ultimately, these hardships are beneficial, for if all our needs were effortlessly available, we would have an attitude of entitlement, and never fully appreciate the many gifts of life. 1:31:10

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Five , ~ ! Having previously enumerated reasons as to why Hashem orchestrates the hurdles we face and the need for us to toil to obtain our livelihood. Rabbainu Bachaya now contends; the person whose commitment to G-d is absolute won't need the challenges to reach their spiritual potential. And, for such a person, G-d will provide -- sans the difficulties ordinary people will have to face! In this episode we will "Meet the Man" who doesn’t need to work or worry to Earn a Living as he is the ultimate Insider for whom Hashem cares and provides. In other words, we are faced with the hardships of finding sustenance because its beneficial for us. Yet, for certain exceptional individuals due to the highly effective Risk Management already deployed, there is simply no benefit! According to this thesis, the truly Righteous Person won't be required to toil to obtain his Sustenance at all. Instead, he’s got G-d arranging all his basic needs!!

PROSPERITY OF THE WICKED

Dec 8, 2021

1:40:53

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Six , - ~ ! Having theologically resolved that Hashem orchestrates the challenges people face in obtaining their livelihood because its beneficial for them; serving to keep them on the straight and narrow --exceptionally righteous people should logically be exempt. Our faith-based Torah logic would further dictate that that wicked people should be most heavily burdened in pursuit of sustenance. Yet, notwithstanding the spiritual Zero Risk Factor, sometimes we see truly Pious People can’t seem to make ends meet, while their rebellious counterparts easily succeed, enjoying tranquil prosperity. Why does G-d make things happen that way?! In this Episode, Rabbainu Bachaya first acknowledges this painful reality, and moves to emphasize that it is an age-Old Question. A faith conundrum that has already been expressed by numerous prophets and continues to vex theologians: Why in Heaven do the Righteous Suffer, while the Wicked Prosper? The author contends by introducing a general assertion that doesn't quite answer the question yet provides important context. A faith-infused perspectives by virtue of which we can and must frame our view of things. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

SUFFER FOR GOOD

Dec 10, 2021

1:40:10

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Seven , - ~ ! We've already resolved that from the standpoint of theological theory, exceptionally righteous people should be spared difficulties in obtaining their livelihood, yet acknowledged that, in fact, its not always the case. We asserted that this does not invalidate our faith-based conclusion because there are always other variables mixed into the equation, and the reasons remain varied and complex. As such, G-d's ways ultimately remain impossible for us to fathom. Notwithstanding, in this Episode, Rabbainu Bachaya will seek to provide some level of intellectual satisfaction to the age-old Faith Conundrum; Why in Heaven do Righteous People sometimes Suffer? Dipping into the deep inkwell of our inspired, sage tradition - the author introduces us to no less than five possible explanations that might be used to (at least theoretically) answer this burning question. These are, of course, not intended to (Heaven forfend) explain any specific person's suffering, but rather to provide an important and faith-infused, insightful context. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

1:26:19

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Eight , - ~ ! Have already addressed the Tests of Faith provoked by the suffering sometimes experienced by truly righteous individuals . And in kindred vein the extraordinary difficulties truly pious people, might on occasion, encounter in the pursuit of their Parnassa (livelihood). In the next two Episodes we will focus on the somewhat lesser vexing - yet nonetheless equally theologically challenging - success often enjoyed by the wicked! Rabbainu Bachaya provides a measure of intellectual satisfaction to this frustrating Faith Conundrum, by providing alternate possible rational for unearned prosperity. The most important takeaway isn't knowing why G-d does anything specific, but rather to prevent us from drawing myopic, wrongheaded conclusions like "choices of (good or) bad behaviour are inconsequential." Stitching a quilt work of Scriptural syntax enhanced by the embroidery of our Oral Tradition - the author will present multiple possibilities as to why that this might be the case. For example, G-d mighty purposefully give temporal material prosperity as a reward for righteousness once preformed, rather than granting lasting bliss in eternity. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Nine , - ~ ! In this new Episode we continue to address theological challenge engendered by the Prosperity of the Wicked. Here, a final two possible rationales for the often-stunning success and goodness G-d seems to bestow upon bad people, are provided! Although, of course, Rabbainu Bachaya cannot answer specifics, and ultimately the Ways of G-d will ever remain a mystery to us -- he can and does provides a measure of intellectual comfort by presenting us with wider context and providing uplifting spiritual perspectives. Artfully weaving strands lifted from sacred scriptural verses and narratives syntax we will a new viewpoint that depicts each frame of time as part of a much larger continuum and incorporates the many dynamic interwoven realities that together form the tapestry, we call life. This fresh new insight proffered on the age-old theological conundrum of Why the Wicked Prosper will open our eyes to a generational goodness that may provide cause for G-d’s beneficence; almost like a Fossil Fuel that goes on to power Wicked Engines! These final explanations complete the picture of our faith-framed window into the deeper workings of our universe, allowing to move on in our quest to build our Bitachon and achieve the inner tranquility available only with true Trust in Hashem! 1:17:35

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy , - ~ ! After addressing various theological conundrums, Rabbainu Bachaya now returns to the original thrust of his thesis; our moral mandate to invest the time and effort required to earn an honest living. He forcefully argues that one cannot, in good faith, rely on miracles or expect others to support him, as he chooses to focus personal spiritual pursuit. Yet, despite the requirement to make our best effort -- we must constantly remember that Hashem is our sole provider. Our efforts simply comprise the "vessel" for His bounty. The question, then is, how do we find the appropriate career to serve as that vessel? Responding to this very query, the author presents us with a trustworthy Bitachon-oriented strategy to help us best choose the worthiest occupation. The lucid Torah perspective of this venerated medieval Spiritual Master comprise a marvelous synergy of pure faith and pragmatism that are entirely compatible. Here we will learn to cultivate the proper Bitachon attitude towards achieving a livelihood, a mindset that will best position us to best achieve that objective. Remarkably, this thousand-year-old manuscript resonates with the relevancy of computer science and can guide us today in successfully finding the most effective Career Path and achieve the inner tranquility available only with true Trust in Hashem! HUNTING INSTINCT

Dec 20, 2021

1:26:57

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-One , - ~ ! Since we are mandated by Hashem to make sincere efforts to seek out a livelihood and support our loved ones, it's only logical to assume that there is clear Torah instructions about how to do so. Yet, until this book was written no such source existed! Rabbeinu Bachaya provides us unprecedented insight and clarity on this important life-question: In the previous Episode, we've discovered a lucid and trustworthy faith-infused strategy to guide us in our quest of a worthy occupation. In this Episode we will continue to develop the thesis and sharpen the Bitachon perspective on employment. The author now draws a fascinating parallel between the Hunting Instincts of various animal’s that enable success in obtaining their sustenance. Should we be relying on our own instincts to sniff out the best way to turn a profit as well, or is it wiser to leave instinctive hunting prowess to Creatures in the Jungle, and choose to make careful and calculated decisions instead? Here we will discover what we should and should not be learning from the animal kingdom to achieve a livelihood, by best positioning ourselves to become recipients of G-d's magnanimous blessings. MINDSET

Dec 21, 2021

1:42:03

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Two , - ~ ! In prior episodes we learnt how to choose our careers or vocations. Now we will now learn how to view those very occupations, and even more importantly, the efforts we are required expend withing that framework to obtain our livelihoods. Rabbeinu Bachaya will insightfully address the importance of adopting the Right Attitude to the significant toil and effort invested in the work we do. And, ultimately, it's by cultivating the proper mindset we can best open the doors to success. In elevating our perspective, we are empowered to uniquely differentiate the Means from the End; learning to appreciate the value of the process or journey itself, rather than the achievement or arrival at destination! To properly understand the foundational element of this eye-opening thesis, we will need to explore the purpose of creation itself, and how the Original Sin radically altered that playing field of Human Endeavor and Destiny. THE RELIANT

Dec 22, 2021

1:33:18

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Three , - ~ ! Having sketched the parameters of the correct Mindset and Attitude we must develop regarding the appropriate efforts made towards obtaining our livelihoods, we now illustrate how it those very endeavours can and should be an embodiment of our rock solid Bitachon, Torah -True Trust. With remarkable clarity, Rabbeinu Bachaya will demonstrate how doing "Our Part" not only doesn't infringe on the imperative for us to Rely (totally and unequivocally) on G-d, but rather flows as a tributary of it! Despite it being somewhat counterintuitive, our investiture of wherewithal in pursuit of our livelihoods, doesn’t have to indicate a lack of faith. In fact, as already richly documented - by adopting the correct mindset - it's quite to the contrary. Conversely, self-reliant belief in your own Ability and Efforts will get in the way of your Soul's Faithfull Aspirations! Ultimately, this misguided approach might even impede or close doors to the success you seek. In elevating our perspective, we are enabled to nurture our inner spiritual reservoir of Emunah, notwithstanding the "real-world" efforts and activities we undertake. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

MATTER OF TRUST

Dec 28, 2021

1:44:27

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Four , ~ ! In seemingly cryptic syntax, Rabbeinu Bachaya begins to sketch the field of endeavour by contrasting the "Here and Now" of Olam Hazeh (our present terrestrial world or reality) with the spiritual "Future" reality of Olam Haba (the proverbial World to Come). To understand how and why the latter requires Trust rather than Faith we embark on a journey of discovery that uniquely illuminates the horizon of life's purpose! Moving on; we identify an array of Trust application in the arena of our daily lives and environmental interactions with practical endeavours and variegated relationships. The meticulous documentation of these unique categories will serve as fertile breeding grounds for actualization and application of our Bitachon. Part One is the opening Episode in study of the Fourth Chapter of "The Gate of Trust," and it comprises the 75th consecutive video of this ongoing series. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

BRIDGE TO ETERNITY

Dec 30, 2021

1:40:11

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Five , ~ ! The fourth chapter's opening lines focus on the endeavour that comprise our ephemeral lives. The differing dimensions will command varying degrees of Bitachon application, yet the common denominator is assumed to be a shared singular objective . Yet, surprisingly, in categorizing the activities of our temporal 'Here and Now' lives we seem to deemphasize the 'big picture' long-term goal of spiritual fulfilment, separating religious pursuit from pedestrian engagement. This ostensible distinction leads us into a deeper discovery of life's meaning. Ultimately, the idea of living purposefully, and being mission-driven applies to all dimensions; both those with immediate results as well as those with 'Future' realities still to come. Appropriately applied, Bitachon can lead us to successfully bridge Heaven and Earth, as our Trusting reliance on Hashem goes far beyond Matters pertaining to Prosperity. Here, we will learn to understand and appreciate why only by relying on G-d in all Matters -- of both Mundane and Mitzvah orientation -- can we successfully achieve inner joy, fulfilment, and lasting satisfaction.

AFTERLIFE

Jan 3, 2022

1:37:12

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Six , ~ ! We've already been taught about varying degrees of Trust required for our everyday realities; learning how Bitachon is to be uniquely applied in different situations. Rabbeinu Bachaya now seems to feel compelled to focus on the Trust Elements that apply towards our belief in The Afterlife. The big question is why? It should be self evident that the author's choice to shift into eternity, and address matters of Trust Pertaining to the World to Come isn't about ignoring the 'Here and Now.' Clearly the focus on Bitachon in eternity is important because it will directly impact the way we lead our terrestrial lives in this present world! Yet for all the force of this assumption brings to the table, it lacks accompanying rational. Why and how indeed does it make a difference to us?! Seeking clarification of this cryptic text will lead us into a journey of discovery of Heaven, Earth, and Existence itself! Ultimately, we will come to appreciate that the idea of living purposefully and being mission-driven applies to all dimensions; both those with immediate results as well as those with 'Future' realities still to come. Nurturing the right degree of heartfelt Bitachon will enable us to successfully synthesize body, soul, and existence. Because trusting reliance on Hashem goes far beyond matters pertaining to material success. Here, we will learn to understand and appreciate why only by relying on G-d in ALL matters -- including the most sublime, spiritual, and even futuristic in nature -- can we lived fully successfully achieve inner joy, fulfillment, and lasting satisfaction. 7 STEPS TO HEAVEN

Jan 9, 2022

1:53:38

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Seven , ~ ! We've already discovered that Bitachon applies uniquely in different dimensions of life, including our present behaviour that's influenced by our Trust and Faith in the future. Before moving forward with the detailed instructions of their application, Rabbeinu Bachaya seems to have felt compelled to formally classify all the categories, from the Ephemeral to the Eternal dimensions of life. The big question is why? To be sure, the neatly restated spectrum of reality in a systematic arrangement will form the structure for this rest of the chapter. Yet was this new list of seven specific categories necessary for Bitachon to be properly sub-divided. Why couldn't we simply be informed how and when ‘In G-d We Trust’ is a must without the fancy (and seemingly superfluous) table of contents? The supposition will be made that the organizational methodology is far more important than most might imagine. In fact, we will remonstrate that it comprises the foundational platform upon which the entire Trust thesis must rest! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

IN CONTROL

Jan 21, 2022

1:42:24

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Eight , ~ ! We've already learnt that Bitachon shouldn't translate into an excuse for Inactivity. Simply stated: appropriately placing your full Trust in G-d does not exonerate you from giving it all you got. Each of us is always supposed to make every reasonable effort to succeed in life. To be sure though, at least superficially speaking --there does seem to be somewhat of dichotomy or even contradiction. Clearly, there's a need for us to create a synthesis and strike a healthy between our Bitachon and Hishtadlut. Striking that balance first requires achieving clarity about certain faith-based axioms about Trust. For example, are we meant to believe that Hashem’s manages everything, even when it seems that others control the outcomes? Ultimately, who is in control?! Although not the primary focus, we will also touch upon ideas of Predeterminism, Predestination, Theological Determinism and even Fatalism. What do we, as Torah Jews, believe in, and how do we squared it with the foundational Yiddishkiet idea of "Bechira" our G-d given "Freedom to Choose?" Finally, if our actions don't make the end results happen anyway -- why does G-d require us to make the effort altogether. Two previously introduced Torah ideas will delightfully illuminate these expanding theological horizons. This Episode is the Fifth segment of the Fourth Chapter of "The Gate of Trust;" comprising the 79th consecutive video of this ongoing series. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT

Jan 27, 2022

1:39:21

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Nine , ~ ! We've already established that having Bitachon doesn't preclude the necessity to invest every reasonable effort towards achieving success. Yes, Hashem is always in control. And yes we are required to do our part. Always. Lucidly illustrated in matter-of-fact brushstrokes: G-d grants sustenance, yet one must choose to eat to be nourished. G-d provides livelihood, yet everyone must expend the effort acquire an appropriate wardrobe and residence. This brings us to a very big question: how precisely we are meant to view concept of Preservation of Life from a Torah-True Trust Perspective. After all, if G-d predestines the outcomes anyway, can we choose to take risks and place ourselves in Danger? In other words, if we accept the idea that Death is pre-Destined -- from a Halachik perspective, is one permitted to take mortal risks or place themselves in Danger [unnecessarily]? And if not, at what point do we cross that formal threshold of legal endangerment? Clarifying this is key to striking the correct balance of Bitachon and Hishtadlut. The impact of these concepts is enormous, affecting everything from vaccinations to rollercoasters! We've got to take a hard look at the lengths we are (and aren’t!) required to go to 'Preserve Life' in safeguarding our health and physical well-being. The concept that our mortality is necessarily pre-ordained - or if you will, only possible if G-d wills it - also opens the door to a chilling yet critical conversation about Suicide, Doctor Assisted Death and what's referred to today as "End-of-Life" decisions from a Torah-True perspective. SUICIDE SQUAD

Feb 1, 2022

1:52:02

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty , ~ ! Having Trust means identifying with Hashem’s management of- and control of - who lives and who doesn’t. Does this mean that whoever commits suicide was going to die anyway? After all, since we believe that everything is in Hashem's hands and death is predestined, why can't we choose to take risks and place ourselves in danger? To be sure, this is a huge Trust issue, and clarifying it is of great importance because otherwise Bitachon can be used to justify downright sinful behavior. Yet, once the conversation has been opened, the ideas presented will certainly illuminate related timely issues like Suicide, Doctor Assisted Death and what's referred to today as "End-of-Life" decisions from a Torah-True perspective. This Episode is the Seventh segment of the Fourth Chapter of "The Gate of Trust;" comprising the 81st consecutive video of this ongoing series. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

THE ANOINTING

Feb 6, 2022

1:45:53

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-One , ~ ! We've already learnt that exploiting the concept of Bitachon -- one's Trustful reliance on Hashem -- by using it to justify taking risks or placing oneself in danger is profoundly wrongheaded. Rabbeinu Bachaya depicts such reliance on G-d, it not as faithful or religious devotion -- but rather as gravely sinful, an act of outright rebellion. Maintaining that in event of mortal failure, a person would be held accountable for having caused their own demise a.k.a. Suicide. This, he then goes on to frame, is (in some respects) even worse than committing murder! He now brings positive proof for this perspective. Citing a biblical narrative, he conclusively demonstrates the importance of being cautious and doing our part to preserve life. This is clearly illustrated by a bold stand taken by a famous prophet, and Hashem's reaction to him: Shmuel HaNavi's reticence to follow explicit instructions -- due to personal safety concerns -- isn’t viewed as a lack of Trust. In fact, the loyal Seer's envisioning of future danger (and resultant reluctance to proceed) is depicted not as unfaithfulness, but instead as true expression of commitment and holy devotion -- entirely in keeping with the lofty ideals of Bitachon. If this is so, despite it concerning a direct command from G-d, how much more so regarding our obligation to be always extremely cautious in taking all reasonable steps to preserve our lives, and never to, Heaven forfend, endanger ourselves! Having exhaustively discussed the first possible outcome of endangering oneself, e.g., causing one's demise. We now conclude this lesson by focusing on the second possible outcome – miraculous deliverance. The author will demonstrate that even if it were to be the case, it would also constitute a grave mistake, and is simply wrong. As such, he conclusively rules out considering the possibility of endangering oneself -- due to a sense of certainty that G-d is always in control anyway. Bottom line: Bitachon should always give one a sense of tranquility and inner calm, yet it should never lead a person to take unnecessary risks! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

FAITH LIKE POTATOES

Feb 10, 2022

1:41:49

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Two , ~ ! We've already established that even a person who lives with perfect Bitachon, blissful reliance on Hashem, is required to take all reasonable precautions to safeguard and preserve life and do everything possible to avoid death. Moving onto the rest bodily welfare including physical health and emotional wellness, and other essentials like clothing, shelter, and our livelihoods. The question is, do we say same of the efforts to be invested in obtaining these basics as well, or is it sufficient here to minimally engage, "going through the motions," and yet ultimately leaving the successful outcome in G-d's hands? Rabbeinu Bachaya now incisively addresses this next area of Human Endeavour with an overarching Partnership Paradigm, teaching us all to learn how to live from the farmers! Having clearly and conclusively proved that Trust in Hashem doesn’t absolve us from doing our part to preserve life. The author now goes on to illustrate how the very same must apply to the mandated pursuit of our basic needs. Employing business language, the Sha'ar HaBitachon now delineates the terms of engagement: fulfill our obligations dutifully, as would any other honest, loyal partner! The certainty that G-d is always in control should always give one a sense of tranquility and inner calm, yet never lead a person to absolution of responsibility. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan
