This week we reread the Aseres HaDibros, and tucked inside a well-known Gemara is a strange historical detail: an entire world almost rejected the Ten Commandments outright, only to reverse course because of one surprisingly ordinary line. What was it about this particular obligation that succeeded where the others failed — and what does that reversal expose about how bias can quietly convince us of things that simply aren't true? This week, we trace the logic that changed an ancient world's mind, and what it teaches us about building our own emunah today. This is a public episode. When the sea refused to split, every tribe stood frozen at the water's edge, waiting for someone else to go first — including the very generation that would, throughout history, become famous for giving up their lives rather than bend on a single mitzvah. So why did people capable of that kind of courage hesitate here? The answer reveals two completely different kinds of faith, and shows that the harder test isn't always the dramatic one — sometimes it's quietly trusting that what looks fixed and immovable in our own lives is never actually out of Hashem's hands. What does a biblical harvest law have to do with why some economies thrive while others collapse? In Parshas Re'eh, tucked inside a list of agricultural tithes, sits one of the Torah's most quietly radical social inventions — a law that didn't ask people to be generous, but engineered generosity directly into its structure. This week, we explore what the Rambam calls a mechanism for building "the bond of love and brotherhood among the children of men," and what modern economists discovered, millennia later, that proves him right. This episode is in memory of my father-in-law, Velvel Rubinoff; Henoch Moshe Zev ben Leib. His yahrtzeit is 2 Elul, which this year is Shabbos of Parshas Shoftim. Ever wonder why the Torah warns a king against arrogance in the very same breath it demands his flawless adherence to every mitzvah? A parable about medieval trade fairs, two very different merchants, and one overflowing wagon reveals why the fuller the load, the heavier the debt behind it — and what the Chazon Ish himself admitted about carrying his own. What if the Torah's law about returning a lost ox was never really about the ox? Rav Shalom Rosner, quoting a striking Ohr HaChaim, reveals that tucked inside the mitzvah of hashavas aveidah is a quiet directive to notice the people in our lives who have wandered from a life of Torah — and to stop looking away. This week, we explore what it actually means to "bring them into your house," why a Shabbos table can do more than any argument, and how the Gemara in Yoma ties this all back to the very first line of Shema. Chazal call it a confession. If you look closely, there's no sin in it anywhere — just a person declaring they did everything right. What exactly is the "confession"? The answer runs through a lost arrangement from before the Golden Calf, a line from the Rosh Hashana Mussaf about what Hashem remembers and what He lets go, and a surprising twist: holding onto our good deeds too loosely might be the real mistake. This week on Mussar HaTorah, Parshas Ki Savo. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit notarabbi.substack.com

When Moshe hands over leadership to Yehoshua at the end of Devarim, he tells him he will "come" into the land with the nation. A few pesukim later, Hashem tells Yehoshua he will "bring" the nation into the land instead. It's the same handoff, the same Yehoshua, almost the same sentence — yet Onkelos translates one small word in these two pesukim in two completely different ways. Why does the Torah's language shift, and why does Onkelos shift right along with it? The answer traces back to a fusion of two leadership roles inside one person, and it turns out that same fusion is sitting inside every single one of us, deciding which voice we listen to before we even realize we're choosing. Every Rosh Hashana we ask Hashem, in Avinu Malkeinu, to "remember us with a favorable remembrance." But if Hashem forgets nothing — if every deed, thought, and motive already stands before Him in full — what exactly are we asking Him to do? And if it's really just a request for forgiveness, why not simply say so? This week, we look at a question Rav Yehuda Amital zt"l pressed hard on, and an answer that changes what we think we're doing every time we daven for a good year. This is a public episode. Why does Hashem never actually say what Moshe and Aharon did wrong? At the very end of Ha'azinu, Moshe is told plainly that he and Aharon won't enter the land, but the reason given isn't a forbidden act or a moment of anger. It's something harder to pin down: they simply didn't sanctify Hashem's Name the way the moment demanded. This week, we trace that puzzling standard back to an earlier scene in the desert, where the Midrash accuses Moshe himself of being "lazy," and uncover why our sages sometimes measure a person not by whether they did wrong, but by whether they brought everything they were capable of bringing. A familiar mishnah gets read in a whole new light, and effort, mitzvos, and how we show up for others start to look a little different by the end. This is a public episode. The Tur teaches that each of the three regalim corresponds to one of our forefathers: Pesach to Avraham's legendary chesed, Shavuos to Yitzchak's willingness to be bound at the Akeidah. Succos, though, is tied to Yaakov for something that sounds almost too ordinary to belong in that company: he built shelters for his livestock. Rabbi Yaakov Kier asks the obvious question, and the answer hides in a completely different moment from Yaakov's life, one involving a boulder, a well, and a strange line from the prayer we recite for rain. What Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz uncovers there changes what Succos is actually asking us to celebrate, and it might be the most attainable avodah of all three festivals. This is a public episode.
