Abraham has hundreds of students in his study hall. He shuts it down and prepares for war. But when he asks the traditional pre-battle questions—Are you newly married? Built a house? Planted a vineyard? Afraid you've sinned?—every single student says yes. They all decline to fight. Abraham heads into battle with just his servant Eliezer. Two men against the armies that defeated giants. Rabbi Epstein reveals how Abraham won: he threw sand and dirt, and G-d turned it into arrows and spears. But the episode explores something deeper. Abraham was doing the right thing by rescuing his nephew. So why was he later rebuked for this mission? And how did that rebuke lead directly to 400 years of slavery in Egypt? You'll discover why Abraham stopped his pursuit at the city of Dan, what vision drained his strength so completely he couldn't continue, and why the Talmud says this battle happened on Passover night. The miraculous night was split in two: half spent rescuing Lot, half reserved for the future Exodus from Egypt. Which raises the most haunting question of all: What made Lot worth saving? He'd chosen wealth over righteousness, pitched his tent toward Sodom, and wasn't even part of the Jewish people. Why spend half a miraculous night on him? This is about impossible battles, divine intervention, and the hidden consequences when we do the right thing the wrong way.

The Jewish response to elections – whether the shocking victory of an openly anti-Semitic mayor in New York City or any political upheaval throughout history – must be twofold: before the vote, we exercise full hishtadlut (effort) by voting, cultivating goodwill with leaders, and supporting candidates who protect Jewish safety (as our Sages sent gifts to Caesar and Rabbi Akiva petitioned Rome); after the vote, we immediately pivot to total bitachon, recognizing that the final outcome is 100 % Hashem’s decree, often sent as a wake-up call that we have grown too comfortable in galut. History repeats itself: German Jews declared Berlin their Jerusalem, Polish Jews called Poland “Polin – here we shall dwell,” and today many American Jews act as if the United States is the final stop; every time we forget we are in exile, Hashem sends a jolt – sometimes from the left, sometimes from the right – to remind us that no political party, president, or democracy is our ultimate protector. The comforting truth is that these “potches” (divine smacks) are acts of love meant to push us back toward our mission: to be a light unto the nations wherever we are, and ultimately to yearn for and move toward Yerushalayim. When we respond correctly – by increasing Torah, tefillah, teshuvah, and authentic Jewish pride – the bitterness miraculously turns sweet, just as October 7th produced hundreds of thousands of newly observant Jews and countless stories of open miracles among the hostages. The message is clear: get comfortable being uncomfortable in galut, stop putting ultimate faith in any human leader or system, and remember that only the almighy (Hakadosh Baruch Hu) runs the world – and He is nudging us home. In this Mussar Masterclass (Day 117) from Orchos Tzaddikim's Gate of Silence, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into the first of four categories that block the Divine Presence: leitzim (mockers). Mockery divides into five types, with the focus on two profoundly evil forms:Slandering/mocking others for no gain—pure malice that steals dignity, lowers reputation, and breeds hatred, worse than theft (which at least seeks personal benefit).Mocking the poor or less successful out of arrogance and haughtiness—despising Hashem's handiwork while falsely crediting one's wealth to personal brilliance ("my power and the might of my hand"). Such mockery stems from pride, ingratitude, and forgetting that Hashem creates both rich and poor. True humility recognizes personal flaws, refrains from judging others, and honors every person as divine creation.
