The Jewish response to elections – whether the shocking victory of an openly anti-Semitic mayor in New York City or any political upheaval throughout history – must be twofold: before the vote, we exercise full hishtadlut (effort) by voting, cultivating goodwill with leaders, and supporting candidates who protect Jewish safety (as our Sages sent gifts to Caesar and Rabbi Akiva petitioned Rome); after the vote, we immediately pivot to total bitachon, recognizing that the final outcome is 100 % Hashem’s decree, often sent as a wake-up call that we have grown too comfortable in galut. History repeats itself: German Jews declared Berlin their Jerusalem, Polish Jews called Poland “Polin – here we shall dwell,” and today many American Jews act as if the United States is the final stop; every time we forget we are in exile, Hashem sends a jolt – sometimes from the left, sometimes from the right – to remind us that no political party, president, or democracy is our ultimate protector. The comforting truth is that these “potches” (divine smacks) are acts of love meant to push us back toward our mission: to be a light unto the nations wherever we are, and ultimately to yearn for and move toward Yerushalayim. When we respond correctly – by increasing Torah, tefillah, teshuvah, and authentic Jewish pride – the bitterness miraculously turns sweet, just as October 7th produced hundreds of thousands of newly observant Jews and countless stories of open miracles among the hostages. The message is clear: get comfortable being uncomfortable in galut, stop putting ultimate faith in any human leader or system, and remember that only the almighy (Hakadosh Baruch Hu) runs the world – and He is nudging us home. Sarai, the matriarch of the Jewish people, makes a stunning statement to her husband: take Hagar, my maidservant, as a concubine. Whatever child comes from this will be mine. This episode unpacks one of the most emotionally layered moments in Genesis. Why does G-d communicate this plan through Sarai rather than directly to Avram? Why does Avram need convincing? What follows is a layered conversation about how this whole arrangement comes to be, and why G-d chooses to communicate it through Sarai rather than speak directly to Avram. The Talmud draws a striking conclusion from this: Sarai had a greater level of divine inspiration than her husband. Rabbi Epstein traces that idea back to a teaching about modesty that reframes what modesty actually means in Jewish thought, pulling it out of the narrow lane most people put it in and revealing something much deeper about how a person tunes in to the divine. Ep. 35 - Abraham's Impossible War

Four mighty kings wage war against five. They crush armies, wipe out giants, conquer cities. When the fighting ends, Lot has been taken captive. A fugitive named Og brings Abraham the news. Abraham has hundreds of students in his study hall. He shuts it down and prepares for war. But when he asks the traditional pre-battle questions—Are you newly married? Built a house? Planted a vineyard? Afraid you've sinned?—every single student says yes. They all decline to fight. Abraham heads into battle with just his servant Eliezer. Two men against the armies that defeated giants. Rabbi Epstein reveals how Abraham won: he threw sand and dirt, and G-d turned it into arrows and spears. But the episode explores something deeper. Abraham was doing the right thing by rescuing his nephew. So why was he later rebuked for this mission? And how did that rebuke lead directly to 400 years of slavery in Egypt? You'll discover why Abraham stopped his pursuit at the city of Dan, what vision drained his strength so completely he couldn't continue, and why the Talmud says this battle happened on Passover night. The miraculous night was split in two: half spent rescuing Lot, half reserved for the future Exodus from Egypt. Which raises the most haunting question of all: What made Lot worth saving? He'd chosen wealth over righteousness, pitched his tent toward Sodom, and wasn't even part of the Jewish people. Why spend half a miraculous night on him? This is about impossible battles, divine intervention, and the hidden consequences when we do the right thing the wrong way.

The Permitted Flattery [Day 132 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Flattery 6]

In Day 132 of the Mussar Masterclass (p. 746 in the Orchot Tzadikim, Gate of Flattery), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores permitted and forbidden forms of flattery (Chanufah). He begins with the positive: one should "flatter" one's wife to preserve shalom bayit—genuinely compliment her cooking, appearance, and character (not lying, but finding and highlighting her unique beauty and goodness, as every person has redeemable qualities viewed through the right lens). This extends to rabbis flattering students to encourage Torah learning, acceptance of rebuke, and mitzvah observance; creditors to ease pressure; and anyone influenceable toward good—using pleasant, positive words to open hearts rather than harsh confrontation, which often fails in our generation. The episode contrasts this with forbidden flattery: validating the wicked (even for personal gain), excessive courtesy that implies approval, or building false trust to later exploit (genevat da'at – stealing the mind, e.g., pretending interest as a customer for air conditioning). Flattery closes doors of teshuvah by reinforcing evil without shame, brings divine wrath, blocks prayers, and perverts justice (e.g., lawyers overly friendly with judges). Rabbi Wolbe stresses strategic positivity (e.g., spotlighting a troubled student's strengths like tree-climbing to rebuild self-worth) while warning against neutrality toward sin—stand for Hashem's honor, distance from mockers of Torah, and avoid environments that normalize negativity. Ep. 34 - Lot's Gamble

Abraham and Lot can't stay together anymore. Their shepherds are fighting. The land can't support both of them. It's time to separate. But here's what makes this moment extraordinary: Abraham gives Lot first choice of where to settle. Left or right, you pick, and I'll take what's left. It's an act of incredible generosity from the elder to the younger, from uncle to nephew. Lot surveys the land and sees the Jordan valley. Lush. Well-watered. Wealthy beyond imagination. It looks like the Garden of Eden. It looks like Egypt. So he chooses it. And in doing so, he "pitches his tent toward Sodom." Rabbi Epstein reveals why this single decision becomes Lot's tragic turning point. The Torah tells us the people of Sodom were "wicked and sinful toward Hashem exceedingly," and Lot knew it. Everyone knew about Sodom the way people today know about Vegas. Yet he chose material prosperity over spiritual proximity to Abraham. The episode unpacks a fascinating debate: When G-d told Abraham to "go to the land I will show you," did He ever actually command him to stay there? The Hebrew is precise, and the answer changes everything about how we understand Abraham's descent to Egypt and his return. You'll discover why G-d doesn't speak to Abraham again until after Lot leaves. What it means that Lot "traveled from the east," which can also be read as "traveled away from G-d." And why Abraham's shepherds refused to let their flocks graze on other people's land even though Lot's shepherds claimed it would eventually belong to them anyway. Rabbi Epstein explores the deeper question underneath Lot's choice: How much are we willing to pay, in money, comfort, or opportunity, to stay close to righteousness? And when does leaving that proximity become the beginning of our own undoing? The episode also addresses whether Abraham made a mistake by letting Lot go, why the Canaanites were living in land that belonged to Shem's descendants, and the profound promise G-d makes to Abraham immediately after Lot departs: "All the land you see, I will give to you and your descendants forever." This is about the choices we make when righteousness and prosperity point in opposite directions, and what happens when we convince ourselves we can have both.

Hey Rabbi! Do Jews Believe in Hell?!

In Judaism, there is no eternal hell or everlasting damnation like in other religions. Instead, the afterlife includes a temporary process called Gehinnom (often translated as purgatory), where the soul is cleansed of its spiritual impurities—much like washing mud off a candy before eating it. This purification lasts up to 11 months for the righteous and a maximum of 12 months for the wicked, determined by the heavenly court. That’s why we recite Kaddish for only 11 months after someone passes—assuming they’ve already atoned and are being purified. Hell in Judaism is not punishment forever; it’s a merciful cleansing so the soul can ultimately draw close to God in the World to Come.
