The Jewish response to elections – whether the shocking victory of an openly anti-Semitic mayor in New York City or any political upheaval throughout history – must be twofold: before the vote, we exercise full hishtadlut (effort) by voting, cultivating goodwill with leaders, and supporting candidates who protect Jewish safety (as our Sages sent gifts to Caesar and Rabbi Akiva petitioned Rome); after the vote, we immediately pivot to total bitachon, recognizing that the final outcome is 100 % Hashem’s decree, often sent as a wake-up call that we have grown too comfortable in galut. History repeats itself: German Jews declared Berlin their Jerusalem, Polish Jews called Poland “Polin – here we shall dwell,” and today many American Jews act as if the United States is the final stop; every time we forget we are in exile, Hashem sends a jolt – sometimes from the left, sometimes from the right – to remind us that no political party, president, or democracy is our ultimate protector. The comforting truth is that these “potches” (divine smacks) are acts of love meant to push us back toward our mission: to be a light unto the nations wherever we are, and ultimately to yearn for and move toward Yerushalayim. When we respond correctly – by increasing Torah, tefillah, teshuvah, and authentic Jewish pride – the bitterness miraculously turns sweet, just as October 7th produced hundreds of thousands of newly observant Jews and countless stories of open miracles among the hostages. The message is clear: get comfortable being uncomfortable in galut, stop putting ultimate faith in any human leader or system, and remember that only the almighy (Hakadosh Baruch Hu) runs the world – and He is nudging us home. In episode seventeen of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches B’Miut Derech Eretz (limited intimacy / controlled desires). Just like the previous way on limited business, this does not mean total avoidance or minimization for its own sake, but rather achieving balance and proper control so that physical pleasures serve their higher purpose. Rabbi Wolbe explains that the single greatest desire of every human being is happiness, not raw sexual pleasure. God created us for pleasure and placed physical desires in the world for us to enjoy — but only in the right way, with balance, so they become real, lasting, and uplifting rather than fake, cheap, or degrading. The Ramchal (Mesilat Yesharim) teaches that man was created for pleasure, yet most people settle for cheap, effortless pleasures instead of working for genuine, godly, eternal ones. Intimacy is a powerful barometer of self-control and desire management. The wedding blessing under the chuppah beautifully expresses the Torah’s balanced approach: certain relationships are strictly forbidden, while within marriage, physical intimacy is not only permitted but elevated into something holy — a reflection of our relationship with God. A healthy marriage and proper observance of the laws of Niddah (family purity) create 12 “honeymoons” a year, keeping excitement and freshness alive even after decades together. This explains the dramatically lower divorce rates in Torah-observant communities. Rabbi Wolbe uses the powerful metaphor of a luxury car and a high-school graduate receiving a red convertible from his wealthy uncle with the condition that he must return it whenever called. The periodic separation heightens anticipation and appreciation — exactly what the Torah’s system of Niddah accomplishes in marriage. He contrasts this with hookup culture, pornography, and instant gratification, which provide cheap, temporary thrills but no lasting fulfillment. Additional points: too much of anything (even barbecue potato chips or chocolate) ruins the pleasure; the Torah elevates physical acts rather than rejecting them (unlike celibate traditions); all wisdom, including scientific concepts like pi, is embedded in Torah; and marriage is a holy unification that mirrors and deepens our connection with the Almighty. In episode eighteen of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches B’Miut Ta’anug — “with limited pleasure.” Like the previous two ways (limited business and limited intimacy), this does not mean total avoidance or asceticism. It means achieving balance so that physical pleasures enhance life rather than dominate or diminish it. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that God wants us to enjoy life and created pleasures for our benefit — but only when pursued with proper limits and intention. The Torah’s mitzvot are not restrictions to make us suffer; they are the precise guidelines that allow us to maximize genuine, lasting pleasure. Deviating from them leads to imbalance and diminished fulfillment. All pleasures — food, exercise, material goods, intimacy — require balance. Seeking pleasure for its own sake is spiritually detrimental. He uses the powerful metaphor that the body is for the soul like a car is for the driver. The body is simply the vehicle that transports the soul; we must maintain it well so the soul can accomplish its mission, but we should never become enslaved to the vehicle. The soul is like a vacuum cleaner that constantly craves spiritual connection to God. When that connection is missing, people chase artificial, momentary pleasures (recreational drugs, excessive materialism, instant gratification) that never truly satisfy and only create greater craving. Practical examples include barbecue potato chips (one bag leads to feeling sick) and the danger of becoming dependent on luxury (his own story of buying a Lexus and the family reaction; his neighbor obsessing over a new truck). True pleasure has substance behind it — use nice things to do mitzvot, help others, and elevate the experience. Shabbos is the ultimate model of ta’anug (pleasure): it combines physical delicacies with spiritual elevation. Rabbi Wolbe warns against wasting pleasures or opportunities and stresses that Mashiach will come “riding on a donkey” (chomer = materialism) to teach us how to master materialism rather than be controlled by it. The bottom line: do not retreat from life or reject pleasures — elevate them. Make every experience holier so it serves the soul instead of the other way around. G-d has just promised Abraham children and a land to inherit. And then Abraham has the audacity to ask G-d: "How will I know that I will inherit it?" How could he ask that? He fears that his descendants will do something to lose everything. Abraham wants to ensure this doesn't happen. G-d answers with a covenant. He tells Abraham to bring specific animals and cut them in half, placing the pieces opposite each other. This was how treaties were made in the ancient world. Then, as the sun sets, a deep sleep falls on Abraham. Along with it comes dread, darkness, and great darkness. Four states for four exiles. G-d shows Abraham what's coming. All of it. Every exile, every persecution, every tragedy his descendants will endure. And then G-d presents a choice. The first choice: a comfortable life in this world, but no guarantee beyond it. The other one: suffering, trials, exile, but a lock on eternity. Abraham sees the full weight of what the second choice means. He sees it all. And he chooses the world to come. This is where the Jewish people become the Jewish people. Not through an easy promise, but through a covenant sealed in blood and fire. G-d promises the land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates. When Joshua leads the people into Israel centuries later, they conquer seven nations. The other three? Those are waiting for the messianic era. In this lively Ask Away session, Rabbi Wolbe clarified that the Talmudic category of “idolater” (akum) in kosher laws refers to any non-Jew who does not share our Torah values and meticulous concern for kashrut – today that includes Muslims, Christians, atheists, etc. – not just literal idol-worshippers; the laws were never about hating non-Jews but about protecting Jewish standards and limiting excessive social intimacy. He also explained that giving flowers to one’s wife (or girlfriend when seriously dating toward marriage) is not only permitted but strongly encouraged by the Rambam, Shulchan Aruch, Rav Moshe Feinstein, and virtually all contemporary Poskim – because it creates shalom bayit and expresses love; flowers are never placed on Jewish graves (we use stones to symbolize permanence of the soul), but for a living spouse they are a beautiful, halachically praised gift that says “I thought about you.” On deeper topics, Rabbi Wolbe taught that true bitachon and saying “Gam zu l’tovah” do not cancel out tears or heartfelt prayer – tears are always welcome and open Heaven’s gates; bitachon simply means we reaffirm that even the pain is ultimately for our good. He addressed inter-movement rabbinic courts by explaining that authentic halachic authority requires (1) belief that the Torah is divine and (2) personal observance of that Torah – without those foundations, rulings lack legitimacy in traditional Judaism. In episode eighteen of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches B’Miut Ta’anug — “with limited pleasure.” Like the previous two ways (limited business and limited intimacy), this does not mean total avoidance or asceticism. It means achieving balance so that physical pleasures enhance life rather than dominate or diminish it. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that God wants us to enjoy life and created pleasures for our benefit — but only when pursued with proper limits and intention. The Torah’s mitzvot are not restrictions to make us suffer; they are the precise guidelines that allow us to maximize genuine, lasting pleasure. Deviating from them leads to imbalance and diminished fulfillment. All pleasures — food, exercise, material goods, intimacy — require balance. Seeking pleasure for its own sake is spiritually detrimental. He uses the powerful metaphor that the body is for the soul like a car is for the driver. The body is simply the vehicle that transports the soul; we must maintain it well so the soul can accomplish its mission, but we should never become enslaved to the vehicle. The soul is like a vacuum cleaner that constantly craves spiritual connection to God. When that connection is missing, people chase artificial, momentary pleasures (recreational drugs, excessive materialism, instant gratification) that never truly satisfy and only create greater craving. Practical examples include barbecue potato chips (one bag leads to feeling sick) and the danger of becoming dependent on luxury (his own story of buying a Lexus and the family reaction; his neighbor obsessing over a new truck). True pleasure has substance behind it — use nice things to do mitzvot, help others, and elevate the experience. Shabbos is the ultimate model of ta’anug (pleasure): it combines physical delicacies with spiritual elevation. Rabbi Wolbe warns against wasting pleasures or opportunities and stresses that Mashiach will come “riding on a donkey” (chomer = materialism) to teach us how to master materialism rather than be controlled by it. The bottom line: do not retreat from life or reject pleasures — elevate them. Make every experience holier so it serves the soul instead of the other way around. In episode nineteen of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches B’Miut Sheina — “with limited sleep.” Sleep is essential, but too much of it causes us to miss life. The Rambam states that a healthy adult needs about eight hours, yet excess sleep dulls the mind and wastes precious time. Children naturally resist sleep because they are full of dreams and a desire to accomplish; as we age, many lose that drive and begin sleeping through life — both literally and figuratively. Rabbi Wolbe stresses the importance of balance (one of six ways in the 48 that focus on moderation). We must be proactive about staying awake — not just physically, but spiritually and mentally. Walking down the street with an empty mind is a form of “sleep.” Instead, take a verse from the weekly parsha, a Mishnah, or a line of Talmud and think about it deeply. Never let your mind wander aimlessly. Apps like YouTube or social media are designed to waste time; periodically delete unused ones or even switch to a “dumb phone” for weeks to cleanse the mind. He shares a moving story about his rabbi, who trained himself over time to sleep only 2½ hours a night and would sometimes doze off mid-lecture, yet wake up and continue exactly where he left off. When asked about sleep, the rabbi replied, “I’ll sleep when I die.” Rabbi Wolbe encourages us to stay alert every moment, because it is possible to live an entire lifetime without a single meaningful thought if we remain in spiritual “sleep mode.” The core message: Sleep enough to stay healthy, but limit it so you don’t miss life. Be awake, purposeful, and constantly engaged with Torah thoughts and growth. Sarai had a plan. Unable to conceive, she tells Avram to take her maidservant Hagar as a concubine. Whatever child comes from this union will be hers. She picks Hagar deliberately, having spent ten years watching her, trusting her above all the others. Then Hagar gets pregnant on the first try, and the whole thing unravels almost immediately. This episode works through one of the Torah's most painfully human sequences: Hagar's sudden contempt for her mistress, Sarai's furious accusation against Avram, and Avram's hands-off response that sends Hagar fleeing into the desert. Rabbi Epstein uncovers a reading of Sarai's complaint that most people miss entirely. When she says "the outrage against me is due to you," she is making a specific legal and spiritual charge rooted in what Avram prayed for. The episode also examines what happens when Hagar runs and an angel finds her at a desert spring. The angel asks her two questions: where have you come from, and where are you going? Hagar can only answer the first one. Rabbi Epstein sits with that for a while, because it turns out the questions are less about geography than about whether any of us actually know the answer to the second one. And woven through all of it: why do the matriarchs have so much difficulty having children? The Talmud's answer is both surprising and consoling, and it lands differently when you hear it in the context of this story.

He highlights two Jewish responses to the Shoah—some distanced from God, others (including his own grandparents who lost family) drew closer through emunah. Judaism holds a view almost no other religion shares: you don't need to be Jewish to get to heaven. You just need to be a good person. In Judaism, there is no eternal hell or everlasting damnation like in other religions. Instead, the afterlife includes a temporary process called Gehinnom (often translated as purgatory), where the soul is cleansed of its spiritual impurities—much like washing mud off a candy before eating it. This purification lasts up to 11 months for the righteous and a maximum of 12 months for the wicked, determined by the heavenly court. That’s why we recite Kaddish for only 11 months after someone passes—assuming they’ve already atoned and are being purified. Hell in Judaism is not punishment forever; it’s a merciful cleansing so the soul can ultimately draw close to God in the World to Come. In four powerful reminders from Orchos Tzaddikim, Rabbi Wolbe teaches us how to live every single day with awe, humility, and unstoppable growth: Stay in your lane of wonder Remember you are lower than the angels yet infinitely higher than animals. Hashem made you master of the entire physical world — fruit, fish, birds, beasts — and then revealed His deepest secrets to you in the Torah. The only proper response is to walk through life like a humbled servant who has just been crowned king: “How grateful one must be for all of this!”Grow so slowly the Yetzer Hara doesn’t even notice The secret to permanent change is tiny, tiny habits. Rabbi Wolbe shares his grandfather’s Yom Kippur War story: the IDF flew the plane just inches above the sand to stay under Egyptian radar. “That’s how we grow,” he says. If you announce “I’ll never speak lashon hara again!” the yetzer hara shoots you down instantly. But if you quietly commit to never switching on one unnecessary light on Shabbos — a tiny blip — the yetzer hara thinks it’s just a bird. Once that tiny mitzvah becomes part of your DNA, the ground beneath you rises, the radar rises with it, and suddenly you’re flying high without ever having triggered the alarm. “Small step → habit → new you → higher radar → next small step.” Quotable gem: “The yetzer hara has perfect radar for big declarations… but it completely misses the guy crawling under the fence with one tiny improvement.”Invest in real friends (without an agenda) Always do good for others exactly the way you wish they would do good for you — but do it because it’s right, not because you’ll have a side benefit that they love you back.
