Shulem is the most recent rising star of the Jewish musical tradition that has been intertwined in the life, faith, and culture of the Jewish people throughout their history. Whether it's prayers, psalms, or contemporary classics, this youthful Brooklyn tenor finds in music something rich and affirming, an endeavor that makes the soul soar and the spirit rise and speaks to the human condition. In fact, Shulem feels music aspires to go beyond current historical context to illuminate what he sees as the perfect dream: when the world is at peace. There are some voices that have to be heard – and Shulem’s is one of them.   We discuss coping with the loss of his sister, dealing with challenges, the recent rise in antisemitism, how Shulem, a hasidic man, got a deal with a massive record label and what steps to take to change the world.   *SPONSOR LINK*    Achas Sha’alti 3 is here! Sharsheret, a national non-profit organization, improves the lives of Jewish women and families living with or at increased genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer through personalized support and saves lives through educational outreach.   Sharsheret was founded in November 2001, four months after Rochelle Shoretz, a 28 year old young Jewish mother, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Immersed within a close-knit Jewish community in northern New Jersey, Rochelle had many offers to help with meals and to transport her sons to after-school programs.   What she really wanted, though, was to speak to another young mom who was going to have to explain to her children that she was going to lose her hair to chemotherapy, and what it would be like to prepare for the High Holidays knowing she was facing a life-threatening illness. Though her grandmother had died of the disease, cancer was a taboo subject still not discussed within her family and, she soon recognized, within the Jewish community at large.   In this episode, Yaakov speaks to Shlomo, Rochelle's eldest son, about his experiences and challenges with the cancer battle his mom fought. Elana Silber, a close friend of Rochelle & CEO of Sharsheret, joins in to help explain the origin story to the org and how they impacted so many people during the most fifilt time of their lives.   SPECIAL THANK YOU: Sara Tenenbaum for helping make this episode a reality.   You can help Sharsheret here: https://sharsheret.org/donate-now/   This episode is in memory of: • Shimon Dovid ben Yaakov Shloima • Miriam Sarah bas Yaakov Moshe • Rochel Leah bas Moshe   Our free call-in-to-listen feature is here: • USA: (712) 432-3489 • UK: 0333-366-0154 • ISRAEL: 079-579-5088   Follow us on social media for more content: • TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@livinglchaim • IG - https://www.instagram.com/livinglchaim/ • FB - https://www.facebook.com/livinglchaim • LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/living-lchaim • Website - https://www.livinglchaim.com/   Have a specific question? email us [email protected] WhatsApp us feedback and get first access to episodes: 914-222-5513 If you are interested in sponsoring an episode in memory or refuah shilama of a loved one, please send an email to [email protected] Lchaim.

Through decades of education and experience, American-born Rabbi Lazer Brody has devoted his life to helping others cope with the massive pressures of modern life as they affect both emotional and physical health. He is no stranger to dealing with ultra-high pressure and stress, as a two-war combat veteran of the Israel Defense Forces, having served his country in regular and reserve duty for over 29 years. He is the author of a number of popular self-help books including “The Path to Your Peak”, “3 Words of Emuna”, “Old Isaac’s Trail to Tranquility” and more. Trigger Warning: We discuss suicide in this episode.     Yaakov here, I encourage you to listen to this episode. It's one of the most powerful episodes I've ever recorded. Aliza is so strong.     Aliza Bulow is the founder and director of Core, an organization that connects Jewish women and strengthens Jewish homes and communities. In addition, she travels regularly to offer guidance, leadership training and strategic planning for Jewish Outreach organizations and Jewish communities throughout the continent. Born to activist parents in the 1960’s, Aliza's community building began early as her upbringing was intensely impacted by her parents’ deep commitment to the civil rights movement. Her own activism took root during her early high school years in the fight for freedom for Soviet Jews. Her passion for Judaism and the Jewish people then took her to Israel where she studied for 2 years at Michlelet Bruria and Hebrew University. With a growing desire to build  and contribute, Aliza explored various avenues to serve the State of Israel and finally chose to enlist in the Israeli Defense Forces from 1982-1984, during the first Lebanon war.  She served in the Nachal Unit with a religious group that was dedicated to building communities in the Land of Israel. Though her dream was to stay in Israel, her soul mate was in law school in America. She married Ephraim Bulow after he graduated, and then they traveled to Russia to visit refusniks before setting up their own home in Long Beach, NY.     We discuss: being a giyorit, working in the army, raising a child with autism, life after her son's suicide, her marriage, starting Core and so much more.     More about CORE here: https://coretorah.org/     * SPONSOR LINK *   Check out Good Faith Effort! Danielle is a wife, a mother and absolute food lover. She grew up in New York and moved to Jerusalem, Israel 15 years ago and has been trying to get life under control here ever since.   That meant figuring out how to run basic errands, do the food shopping, and cooking in a place that does not translate everything into English (Its as if they don’t realize that New York is the center of the world)! So she did what she does best and started making lists. She made lists of everything (ingredients, cooking terms, conversion charts, supermarkets).   Besides the regular mothering, wife-ing, food blogging and recipe developing, she also does restaurant and menu consulting and gives cooking demos.   In this episode, Yaakov & Gitta sit down with PLC to discuss the proper way to consume media, juggle family life and how Danielle keeps on cooking up awesome content (and food).   Follow her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peaslovencarrots/   * SPONSOR LINK *   Check out Good Faith Effort! In the summer of 2019, Yossi Hecht’s life was drastically changed. The doctors found a tumor in his spine and he needed a number of surgeries to remove it.   One of the repercussions from such invasive surgeries, is that the ability to go to the bathroom can oftentimes be affected.   With advice of his Rabbeim, he embarked on a campaign for individuals to have more concentration on the bracha of Asher Yatzar. He saw personal wonders and has therefore made it his mission to try to inspire others to be more thankful. Thus, using the blessing as a conduit to appreciate all of the good bestowed upon us.   For more information about Yossi’s organization please visit: www.ashertotheyatzar.org   * SPONSOR LINK * Jewish tradition teaches that in every generation there are 36 people upon whose kindness and righteousness the very existence of the world depends, but whose identity no one knows - not even the 36 themselves.    Justin Hayet scours Israel to find the 36 most wonderful, interesting people doing the most wonderful, interesting things with the aim of discovering what makes Israel such a remarkable source of goodness. At the age of 3, Yakov Horowitz lost his father. After many years of teaching, he wrote a 4,500 word essay in The Jewish Observer titled “An Ounce of Prevention” on the subject of at-risk teens in the community. The article shocked the Orthodox community and led to an invitation to address the 1996 National Conventions of Agudath Israel of America and Torah Umesorah. It also led to the founding of Project Y.E.S. in 1997, which he is the director. In 1997, Horowitz founded Yeshiva Darchei Noam of Monsey, a child-centered yeshiva, and published Bright Beginnings Chumash and Gemara workbooks that are currently used in over 100 schools. He authored two books on chinuch and parenting and is a regular columnist for The Jewish Press and Mispacha on topics including mental health, social problems, internet usage and child safety. In partnership with ArtScroll, he published a groundbreaking child safety book "Let's Stay Safe,” that is in over 130,000 homes in 3 languages. Horowitz uses social media to warn about sex offenders within the Jewish community and how to avoid them. He recently launched a campaign to get a copy of the safety books in every home, learn more here https://www.childsafetybook.org More books here: https://amzn.to/3hpKdqc And follow him here: https://www.instagram.com/yakovhorowitz/?hl=en And here: http://www.rabbihorowitz.com/PYes/MGFiles/about.cfm   PLEASE NOTE: The goal of this show is to help people find themselves and get more connected to Hashem. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Beri a new-age Chasidic singer, composer, entertainer AND Rosh HaYeshiva (Yes, you read that right). He is a renowned “vocal powerhouse” and gained popularity soon after he began releasing his albums in 2007. However, the debut of his celebrated “Thank You Hashem” gripped the attention of Jewish music fans worldwide. Beri’s music emanates fresh energy in soulful, creative singing. His unique style, inspired by mystical Chassidus, aims to motivate and elevate fans around the globe. Beri began his singing career at age nine. He sang alongside popular musical artists including MBD, Moshe Goldman, and Mendy Werdyger and later joined the Shira Choir. Beri names Shlomo Carlebach and MBD as his major musical influences and was immersed in their music throughout his childhood. Beri draws his musical inspiration from the teachings of R’ Nachman of Breslev and enjoys exploring the Rebbe’s views on the spirituality of music with Reb Lazer Brody, Reb Motta Frank and Reb Itche Mier Morgenstern of Jerusalem. A few years ago, Beri opened a yeshiva for boys who have been mistreated or misunderstood.  In this episode, Beri explores where he finds the soul in his songs, where he turns for inspiration and how he balances being a rebbi and a world-famous singer. Rosie Heilbrun was always told her red hair was a curse, but she never believed it. She often dreamed what it would look like under a white veil with the man of her dreams by her side. However, her life takes a harrowing turn in 1944 when she is forced out of her home and sent to the most gruesome of places: Auschwitz. Upon arrival, Rosie’s head is shaved and along with the loss of her beautiful hair, she loses the life she once cherished. Among the chaos and surrounded by hopelessness, Rosie realizes the only thing the Nazis cannot take away from her is the fierce redhead resilience in her spirit. When all of her friends conclude they are going to heaven from Auschwitz, she remains determined to get home. She summons all of her courage, through death camps and death marches to do just that. Her granddaughter, Nechama Birnbaum knew the world needed to know her grandmother's story. Her book "The Redhead of Auschwitz" is about the intricacies of Jewish culture that still exist today and the tender experiences that are universal to all humanity: family, coming of age, and first love. It is a story that celebrates believing in yourself no matter the odds. This is a story about the little redheaded girl who thought she could, and so she did. Unfortunately, shortly after this interview, Rosie passed away. It is with great sadness but also honor, that we have the opportunity to release an interview with her to help perpetuate her legacy. Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein ZTL was the founder of Ohr Yitzchak, Ateres Naava Seminary for Girls, and Ohr Naava Women's Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Ohr Naava is a unique program designed for women ages 17 through 120 who are interested in furthering their Torah experience. The program, which was under the leadership of Rabbi Wallerstein, started out as a Wednesday evening class in a small classroom known as a "Chabura." It brought together girls who had just returned from studying in Israel, college students who needed a weekly moment of inspiration, and most of all, Jews of different backgrounds with one common goal, to grow and change. The signature of Ohr Naava is to provide a multitude of programs, absolutely free of charge, for women wishing to make the time to grow, change and further their Torah knowledge. While Ohr Naava’s staff is ensuring that all programming remains in place, it was Rabbi Wallerstein who fundraised its multi-million dollar budget each year. His passing leaves us with the communal responsibility to ensure that Ohr Naava remains solvent, perpetuating the legacy of a man who saw the potential in each girl, treating everyone like a daughter.  PLEASE DONATE HERE: https://rabbiwallersteinlegacyfund.org/52229 or Checks can be sent to: Ohr Naava 2361 Nostrand Avenue Suite 402 Brooklyn, NY 11210 Episode Order: 00:07:05 - Howie Hershkovich, "Like My Father" 00:25:30 - Melissa Sherman, "Saved My Jewish Life" 00:42:33 - Rabbi Moishe Elefant & R' Duvie Zicherman, "Changing the World AND Being There for his Family" 01:35:38 - Yaakov Langer, "How He Changed Me" This episode is in memory of: Shimon Dovid ben Yaakov Shloima, Miriam Sarah BAS Yaakov Moshe and R' Zecharia Shimon ben R' Yitzchok HaKohen.

Lipa is one of the most talented artists in the Jewish world. His brilliant lyrics and unique style led him to a quick rise to fame. But Lipa was still figuring out who he was. Schmeltzer's music has both gained popularity due to the fusion of traditional Chasidic music and lyrics with contemporary music styles. His performance range includes "hard-driving rock tunes, jazzy shuffles, pseudo-rap numbers, solemn prayers, klezmer dances and jokey skits, accompanied by a nine-piece band and a troupe of actors". He writes lyrics in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish. Lipa has been going through a journey. After "leaving" his community and going to college, he has returned with a new look at life, his music and himself. Aside for being an incredible artist he is a deeply intelligent and honest person.
