In this inspiring episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary life of Avraham Avinu and the timeless lessons of Parshas Lech Lecha. Our forefathers and foremothers were not merely historical figures to admire; they were examples of how we can live, grow, and develop our own relationship with Hashem. Why do we say in the Amidah, “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,” rather than simply “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”? Because each of our patriarchs developed a unique, personal relationship with the Creator. Every individual is called upon to build their own direct, meaningful, and uninterrupted connection with Hashem. We don't need to imitate someone else's spiritual journey; we need to discover our own.Rabbi Wolbe highlights Avraham's boundless kindness and his courageous dedication to spreading awareness of the one true God. His tent was open on all four sides, welcoming everyone regardless of background, beliefs, or differences. Drawing extensively from the Rambam's Mishneh Torah, Rabbi Wolbe traces the fascinating origins of idol worship, explaining how humanity gradually replaced its relationship with the Creator by worshipping His creations. Avraham challenged this mistaken worldview, discovering Hashem through intellectual investigation and dedicating his life to teaching others about God's existence. But the message is equally relevant today: Modern idolatry can take the form of materialism, fashion, possessions, physical appearance, or anything that becomes more important than our relationship with Hashem. The episode then explores the profound difference between knowing Hashem and believing in Him. Rabbi Wolbe explains that Torah Judaism calls for more than a blind leap of faith. We are meant to investigate the wonders of creation, recognize Hashem's presence in our daily lives, and develop genuine knowledge of His existence. Emunah takes that knowledge a step further, transforming what we know into how we live. Prayer becomes not merely a religious obligation but an ongoing conversation with our Creator. Through a touching story about his grandfather's eagerness to pray Mincha, Rabbi Wolbe illustrates that a meaningful relationship with Hashem requires the same anticipation, communication, and commitment as any cherished personal relationship. One of the episode's most moving moments is Rabbi Wolbe's deeply personal account of the miraculous birth of his son, Yehuda. After doctors identified a serious prenatal condition and prepared for immediate surgery upon delivery, the baby was born without the anticipated complication. His subsequent time in neonatal intensive care revealed another extraordinary miracle we often take for granted: the simple act of breathing. Reflecting on this experience, Rabbi Wolbe reminds listeners that every breath, every sunrise, and every ordinary moment is an opportunity to recognize Hashem's goodness and express gratitude. By developing a reserve of gratitude during life's brighter moments, we prepare ourselves to remain connected to Hashem even through darkness and difficulty. The episode concludes with a powerful call to emulate Avraham's unwavering faith, perseverance through life's tests, and commitment to representing Hashem through everyday behavior. We will all experience challenges, disappointments, blessings, and successes. The goal is not to escape life's tests but to embrace them as opportunities for spiritual growth. By treating others with dignity, speaking respectfully, overcoming anger, and living with gratitude, we become living examples of Avraham's legacy and deepen our personal relationship with the Creator. In this inspiring episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the remarkable story of Noach and the deeper meaning of righteousness, leadership, and faith. The Torah introduces Noach as a righteous and perfect man in his generation, yet our sages offer differing interpretations of his greatness. Why would anyone question the righteousness of someone whom the Torah itself praises? Rabbi Wolbe explains that true greatness is measured not only by personal spiritual accomplishments but also by our willingness to take responsibility for others. While Noach preserved his righteousness amid a corrupt generation, Avraham and Moshe demonstrated an additional dimension of leadership: actively caring for, uplifting, and transforming the people around them. The lesson is profound: Our greatest legacy is not what we accumulate, but the good deeds we perform and the lives we elevate.Drawing on the extraordinary teachings of Rabbi Shimon Schwab, Rabbi Wolbe uncovers a revolutionary understanding of emunah (faith). How could Noach, who devoted 120 years to constructing the ark in obedience to Hashem, be described by Rashi as someone of limited faith? The answer reveals that emunah is far more than intellectually believing that something will happen. Emunah is an active, creative force that helps bring potential into reality. Rabbi Wolbe connects this idea to Mordechai raising Esther, the miraculous blessings of Shemitah, and the teachings of the Noam Elimelech. He explains that Noach's hesitation was not necessarily rooted in doubt, but in his reluctance to contribute spiritually to the destruction of his generation. Nevertheless, our responsibility is to do what Hashem asks and trust Him with the outcome. The episode then turns this powerful lesson into practical guidance for everyday life. How often do we limit our own possibilities by convincing ourselves that a job opportunity, ambitious project, meaningful relationship, or personal goal is beyond our reach? Through relatable examples of successful entrepreneurs and visionaries, Rabbi Wolbe challenges listeners to replace self-defeating assumptions with courageous faith and meaningful action. As he memorably declares, “Faith it till you make it!” With Emunah, determination, and Hashem's blessing, we can accomplish far more than we imagine. Finally, Rabbi Wolbe applies this understanding of Emunah to parenting, family life, and personal leadership. Just as Mordechai nurtured Esther's potential, parents have a precious and limited opportunity to cultivate their children's unique greatness. Rather than becoming consumed by small frustrations and constant corrections, parents should create homes filled with joy, warmth, encouragement, and emotional security. The episode concludes with a beautiful reminder that we can learn from Noach's righteousness, Avraham's outreach, and Moshe's compassionate leadership. True Jewish greatness combines personal growth, unwavering faith, and genuine concern for others, while remembering that healthy solitude strengthens our ability to serve the people around us. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Wolbe explores Parshas Noach, focusing on Noah’s righteousness, the flood, and the ark’s survival (Genesis 7:23). He delves into Rashi’s comment about Noah’s lion bite, Talmudic insights on divine image and heavenly intent, and the generational impact of biblical figures. Key themes include:Noah’s Righteousness and Flaw: Noah’s tireless care for animals for a year without sleep reflects his righteousness, but a minor delay in feeding a sick lion led to a bite, showing even small lapses affect one’s divine image (Talmud Shabbat, Sanhedrin) (1:07–6:19).Heavenly Intent: Actions must be for heaven’s sake, not personal gain. Noah’s dedication, despite the bite, parallels the principle that pure intent is credited as action, as seen in consistent charity habits (6:19–8:17).Generational Impact: Abraham’s service to angels was mirrored by Hashem for the Jewish people, impacting seven generations to Moshe. Noah’s preservation of life laid humanity’s foundation, showing our actions shape descendants (ma’aseh avot siman l’banim) (9:45–13:21).Land of Israel: The Torah’s promise to Abraham’s lineage refutes modern claims (e.g., Ishmael’s precedence), reinforcing Noah’s role in ensuring humanity’s continuity (14:40–15:58).Foundational Moments: Early education (e.g., Vilna Gaon), marriage, and habits are critical, like Noah’s foundational work. Beginnings are hard but shape future generations, as seen in prayers for Torah’s sweetness (16:49–22:00). Join us as we examine the morality of evil and its consequences in our modern world, using the narrative of Noach from the Torah as a lens. We reflect on why God decided to obliterate all life forms from the face of the earth, and why such an extreme action is deemed necessary in the face of evil. We grapple with the concept of how man's wickedness impacts the innocent, leading to the destruction of birds, animals, and creatures. Noach, the man who maintained his righteousness in the midst of all this wickedness, is also a focus of our discussion. The discussion continues with a contemplation on maintaining a moral compass amidst ridicule and a wicked world. We explore the need to address our own flaws and promote good in the world, drawing lessons from God's instruction to Noach to obliterate evil. We also talk about how the current global events mirror the tales of the Torah, especially the ongoing violence and terrorism from Hamas in Gaza. Tune in for an enlightening conversation that links ancient wisdom with current events, challenging us to reflect on our own actions and choices in today's world. In this inspiring opening episode of the fifth cycle of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Bereishis and one of the Torah's most profound questions: “Ayeka — Where are you?” After Adam and Eve eat from the Tree of Knowledge, Hashem does not immediately confront them with accusations or demand repentance. Instead, He asks Adam, “Where are you?” This question is not about Adam's physical location but about his spiritual standing. Hashem is asking: Where have you gone from your greatness? Are you fulfilling your unique mission, or have you wandered away from your true purpose?Through a memorable parable about a poor man who travels to an island filled with diamonds but becomes distracted by collecting coconuts, Rabbi Wolbe illustrates how easily we can confuse temporary worldly success with eternal spiritual achievement. We enter this world with precious opportunities to collect the real diamonds of life—mitzvos, acts of kindness, personal growth, and closeness to Hashem. Yet we often become consumed with careers, wealth, material possessions, and physical pleasures, forgetting why we came here in the first place. The tragedy is not necessarily that we fail to achieve success, but that we succeed at things that ultimately do not fulfill our soul's purpose.Rabbi Wolbe further explores the relationship between the body and soul, reminding us that we are not merely physical beings with spiritual responsibilities—we are souls entrusted with physical bodies to accomplish our divine missions. Our eyes, hands, strength, talents, and physical capabilities are extraordinary gifts from Hashem, intended to help us serve Him and elevate our souls. Even our everyday emotional reactions offer opportunities for spiritual greatness: when provoked, will we respond with anger, or will we choose mercy, kindness, love, and patience? The episode concludes with a powerful challenge for every listener: Ask yourself, “Ayeka? Where am I in my personal journey?” Every human being is unique, created with a mission that nobody else can accomplish. By removing distractions, embracing Torah and mitzvos, and striving to emulate Hashem, we can return to our true path and fulfill the extraordinary purpose for which our souls were sent into this world. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe begins the fourth cycle of weekly Torah insights with Parshas Bereshis, focusing on creation's profundity and life's lessons from Genesis 1:25–27. He emphasizes Hashem's deliberate design, urging listeners to derive ethics from nature if Torah were absent, while highlighting Torah's elevation beyond instinct.Creation's Depth: Bereshis holds infinite secrets; a rabbi spent 25 years on one book about the six days, yet Rabbi Simcha Wasserman deemed it insufficient. No full week exists to study it due to holidays, protecting its mysteries (0:12–4:48).Animal Essences and Lessons: Animals are created "according to their kind" (limino), each with unchangeable traits (Talmud Eruvin 100b). Examples: cat (modesty), dog (forgiveness), camel (self-sufficiency for true kindness), ant (diligence per Proverbs 6:6). Rambam story proves nature's immutability—trained cats chase mice. Without Torah, animals teach conduct; with Torah, it refines (e.g., "do not murder" prohibits embarrassment) (6:26–14:40).Human Creation and Genders: Hashem created male/female binary ("zachar u'nekeva"), rejecting modern fluidity (5:47–6:26).Divine Messages Everywhere: King David learned from all creatures except the spider, which later saved him. Every event is Hashem's message—learn from situations (e.g., supermarket observations). In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses Parshas Ha’azinu (Deuteronomy 32), a prophetic song read on the Shabbos following Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (September 20-21, 2025). He connects the parsha’s themes to the spiritual preparation for Yom Kippur, emphasizing teshuvah (repentance) and the bedtime Shema as a daily practice to align with divine purpose. Key points include:Parshas Ha’azinu Context: The parsha, a song foretelling the Jewish people’s future, includes a verse (Deuteronomy 32:20) about afflictions against enemies, which Rabbi Wolbe interprets spiritually as the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination). He cites the Talmud (Rabbi Yitzchak) that reciting the bedtime Shema protects against spiritual “demons” or negative impulses, linking this to the parsha’s message.Yom Kippur Connection: Yom Kippur, beginning with Kol Nidre on September 20, 2025, is a time of purity and unlimited potential through teshuvah. Rabbi Wolbe highlights four designated times for repentance: the Ten Days of Repentance (culminating in Yom Kippur), Erev Rosh Chodesh (Yom Kippur Katan), Erev Shabbos, and before sleep (bedtime Shema). These moments mirror Yom Kippur’s introspective judgment.Bedtime Shema’s Power: The bedtime Shema, distinct from morning and evening Shema, is a “micro Yom Kippur” where one forgives others, confesses sins, and seeks divine mercy, as outlined in its prayer text. Covering the eyes during Shema symbolizes focusing spiritual vision over physical distractions, aligning with Yom Kippur’s theme of self-accountability (chosem yad kol adam bo, “the signature of every person” in the book of life).Practical Application: Rabbi Wolbe proposes a resolution for the new year: recite the bedtime Shema nightly, reflecting for five seconds on daily actions to strengthen good deeds and correct misdeeds. This practice protects against negative influences, fosters teshuvah, and aligns one’s life with Hashem’s will (Shema Yisrael, declaring Hashem’s oneness).Anecdotes and Insights: He shares a story of a recovering addict who transformed after seeing his potential in a mirror, paralleling the introspective power of the bedtime Shema. Rabbi Wolbe critiques modern distractions (e.g., smartphones) and the tendency to judge others, urging listeners to focus on self-improvement and forgiveness, especially for Yom Kippur. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Ki Savo, the seventh portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, focusing on Deuteronomy 26:11, which instructs the Jewish people to rejoice in all the goodness given by Hashem, including to their households, the Levites, and converts. Rabbi Wolbe, citing the Orachaim HaKadosh, emphasizes that this "goodness" refers to the Torah, described as sweeter than honey, capable of transforming negative traits like arrogance or anger into positive ones, as it extracts impurities, much like honey purifies non-kosher items over time. He shares personal anecdotes, such as his excitement at understanding Talmud for the first time at age 15, and stories of great sages like the Steipler, who survived freezing conditions through immersion in Torah study, and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, whose Torah focus influenced even physical phenomena like a flickering light at his passing. Rabbi Wolbe underscores the Torah’s transformative power, urging listeners to engage with its living, relevant teachings daily, as exemplified by his grandfather’s advice to study a verse before leaving home to shield against temptation. He connects the parsha to current events, noting the Torah’s status as a "tree of life" that energizes and elevates, encouraging listeners to embrace its sweetness with passion and commitment, especially during Elul, and concludes with a blessing for deeper Torah connection. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Ki Seitzei, the sixth portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, read during the month of Elul, a time of introspection before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rabbi Wolbe begins with Deuteronomy 21:10, which describes going out to war against enemies, interpreting the true battle as the internal struggle against the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination). He emphasizes that this parsha, always read in Elul, reflects the spiritual war against personal temptations, with Hashem promising victory to those who make the effort. Referencing Deuteronomy 28:47, Rabbi Wolbe notes that failing to serve Hashem with joy amidst abundance leads to spiritual downfall, a challenge as relevant today as in past generations. He contrasts two types of Teshuva (repentance): Teshuva me’yirah (out of fear), which turns sins into mistakes, and Teshuva me’ahavah (out of love), which transforms sins into mitzvot, as taught in the Talmud (Yoma 86). Quoting the Orchos Tzaddikim and Talmud Yoma, he shares a teaching about Moshe ascending the seven firmaments, where angels praise progressively greater divine gifts—culminating in Teshuva, which reaches God’s throne of glory, as per Hosea 14:2.Rabbi Wolbe illustrates this with a story of an elderly man whose past sins, through Teshuva me’ahavah, became the source of his righteousness. He shares a personal anecdote about apologizing to another rabbi, turning a moment of friction into a strengthened friendship, showing how challenges can elevate relationships when approached with love. Rabbi Wolbe urges listeners to face their personal battles—whether work, health, loneliness, or parenting—with heartfelt teshuvah, drawing inspiration from children’s pure prayers, and to trust in Hashem’s promise of success. He concludes with a blessing for a Shabbos filled with spiritual victory and connection to Hashem. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Shoftim, the fifth portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, which outlines the establishment of a just society through judges, officers, and the pursuit of righteousness. Rabbi Wolbe begins with Deuteronomy 16:18-20, emphasizing the command to appoint judges and officers at all gates to ensure fair judgment, and the iconic verse “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof” (“Justice, justice you shall pursue”), highlighting the need for integrity free from bribery, which can corrupt even the wise and just. He connects the prohibition against planting a tree for idol worship near God’s altar (Deuteronomy 16:21) to the sin of arrogance, which God despises most, as it elevates oneself above others and distorts one’s role as a servant in God’s world. Rabbi Wolbe explains that a king must carry a Torah scroll to remain humble, a reminder for the Jewish people as the chosen nation to uphold higher standards of honesty and responsibility, not arrogance. He shares a story about Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, who, for 14 years, returned Social Security checks sent erroneously due to a mistaken birth date, exemplifying the integrity expected of God’s chosen people. Another story recounts a Russian couple who, unable to access a mikvah, abstained from intimacy for years to adhere to Torah laws, demonstrating profound commitment. Rabbi Wolbe urges listeners to appoint “judges and officers” in their personal lives by seeking mentors or friends to provide honest feedback, as illustrated by a story of a friend, Dan Coleman, who initially resented a rabbi’s interrogation but later valued it as preparation for divine judgment. He emphasizes the importance of self-reflection—looking in the mirror to confront one’s flaws—and seeking external perspectives to overcome personal blind spots, especially during Elul’s introspective period. Rabbi Wolbe concludes by encouraging listeners to embrace vulnerability, accept constructive criticism, and pursue personal growth to align with divine justice, wishing all a meaningful Shabbos. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into Parshas Re’eh, the fourth portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, emphasizing its profound inspiration and guidance for living as God’s chosen people. Focusing on Deuteronomy 13:5, Rabbi Wolbe highlights the verse’s commands to follow Hashem, fear Him, observe His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. Quoting Rashi, he explains that “clinging to Hashem” means emulating His ways through acts of loving-kindness, such as visiting the sick (Bikur Cholim), burying the deceased, and comforting mourners, as God did for Abraham and Moses. Rabbi Wolbe stresses that these acts must be performed with the same heartfelt sensitivity and dignity as God’s actions, not for personal gain but out of reverence for Hashem. He shares a story of a rabbi refusing a Bikur Cholim visit, noting that true visitation involves genuine care for the individual’s needs, not just fulfilling a mitzvah. Rabbi Wolbe also recounts personal experiences benefiting from Satmar Bikur Cholim’s remarkable support in hospitals like Good Samaritan, Hackensack, and Montefiore, where they provide food, accommodations, and even emotional care, such as gifting a wig to a mother in distress. A guest, Mr. Schwartz from Satmar Bikur Cholim, joins to describe their 75-year commitment to serving 18 hospitals daily with a $3.5 million budget funded by donations, never turning anyone away regardless of background. He shares how their services, including kosher kitchens and Shabbos accommodations, ease the burdens of patients and families, and appeals for support during the Elul campaign. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that emulating God goes beyond actions to include the manner—loving, thoughtful, and selfless—as seen when God waited for Abraham to serve passersby, prioritizing human kindness (Ben Adam L’Chavero) before divine service (Ben Adam L’Makom). He concludes by urging listeners to perform mitzvot with divine sensitivity and to support Bikur Cholim, wishing all a Shabbos filled with meaningful connection to Hashem. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Eikev, the third portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, rich with divine guidance for the Jewish people as they prepare to enter the Land of Israel. Rabbi Wolbe begins with Deuteronomy 7:12, which promises that observing and performing God’s commandments (mitzvot) will ensure the fulfillment of the covenant and blessings promised to the patriarchs. Rashi interprets “Eikev” (meaning “heel”) as a call to value even the seemingly minor mitzvot that one might “trample” underfoot, emphasizing that every commandment holds profound significance. Rabbi Wolbe addresses why God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob focus solely on the Land of Israel, not the Torah, explaining that the Land is Hashem’s palace, and the Torah is the manual for proper conduct within it. The Torah’s observance is implied as essential for dignified living in this sacred space. He highlights Deuteronomy 8:10, recited in Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals), which instructs to bless Hashem for the “good land” after eating, noting the Zohar’s teaching that all global blessings flow through Israel. Rabbi Wolbe shares a story of a rabbi illustrating the biblical obligation to thank God after eating, contrasting it with the rabbinic blessing before meals, and recounts the Ger Rebbe’s insight that gratitude (Modim) outweighs requests in prayer, as seen in the Hallel prayer’s emphasis on thanking Hashem. He underscores the importance of Birkat Hamazon as a biblical commandment that ensures livelihood and success when recited with focus, per the Sefer Hachinuch. Rabbi Wolbe encourages listeners to embrace gratitude for life’s blessings—food, taste, and sustenance—recognizing them as divine gifts channeled through the Land of Israel, and to approach Birkat Hamazon as a highlight of spiritual connection, not a rushed obligation. He concludes with a blessing for a Shabbos filled with abundance and divine goodness. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe introduces Parshas Va'eschanan, which follows Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning for the destruction of the two Temples and other tragedies in Jewish history. The episode focuses on Moses’ heartfelt pleas—515 prayers—to enter the Land of Israel, which God ultimately denies, commanding him to stop to avoid compelling divine acquiescence. Rabbi Wolbe is joined by his nephew, Avram Blackman, a seventh-grader from Toronto, who shares a profound insight on the parsha. Avram highlights Moses’ resilience, noting that despite his unanswered prayers, Moses continued to teach and strengthen the Jewish people, delivering the Shema and Torah without complaint. Avram connects this to a personal story about his rebbe, who, unable to speak due to a medical procedure, wrote personalized, heartfelt letters to each student on the last day of school, pouring his love and pride into words that carried lasting impact. Avram compares this to the Torah itself, likening it to a divine letter from Hashem, written to endure beyond spoken words, ensuring an eternal connection. He addresses the question of why Moses prayed 515 times if his request was denied, explaining that prayer is about building a relationship with God, not just achieving desires. Each prayer brought Moses closer to Hashem, just as his rebbe’s letters deepened the bond with his students. Rabbi Wolbe reinforces this, emphasizing that prayer elevates us spiritually, regardless of the outcome, and encourages listeners to see every prayer as a step toward divine closeness. The episode concludes with a blessing for fulfilled prayers and a meaningful Shabbos. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into Parshas Devarim, the opening portion of the Book of Deuteronomy, which serves as a review (Mishneh Torah) of the Torah’s teachings, encapsulating Moses’ final remarks to the Jewish people. Rabbi Wolbe focuses on the first verse (Deuteronomy 1:1), which lists seemingly extraneous locations—such as the wilderness, Arava, and Dizahav—where Moses spoke to the Israelites. Quoting Rashi, he explains that these are veiled critiques of the Jewish people’s past sins, including the complaints after Egypt, the Midianite women, the spies, the manna, Korach’s rebellion, and the Golden Calf. Moses delivers these critiques gently to avoid direct confrontation, reflecting the Torah’s sensitivity to prevent embarrassment. Rabbi Wolbe ties this to the upcoming month of Elul, a time for introspection and gentle self-critique, and shares his grandfather’s advice to young husbands to avoid critiquing their wives for three years to preserve their relationship. He references a Talmudic teaching from Yevamot 65b, which mandates offering constructive criticism only when it will be accepted, and withholding it otherwise, emphasizing that effective critique requires knowing the recipient well and prioritizing their growth over personal catharsis. Rabbi Wolbe recounts a story about Rabbi Yaakov Galinsky visiting Rabbi Hetskel Levenstein during shiva, where Levenstein lamented that no one offered him introspective critique about his wife’s passing, unlike the sages who lovingly prompted Rav Huna to reflect on his loss of 400 barrels of wine (Tractate Berachot 5b). This underscores the value of constructive feedback from trusted friends. Rabbi Wolbe encourages embracing criticism as a path to self-improvement, as taught in Ethics of the Fathers (6:6), and warns against arrogance that rejects critique. He concludes by urging listeners to use gentle, loving critique to foster personal growth and prepare for Rosh Hashanah, wishing all a meaningful Shabbos. In this Parsha Review Podcast episode on the double portion Matos-Masei, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the continuation of Pinchas’ story from last week. As the Jewish people prepare for war against Midian, Moshe sends 1,000 men from each tribe along with Pinchas — carrying the sacred vessels and trumpets. Rashi explains that Pinchas was singled out because he had begun the mitzvah of zealously defending Hashem’s honor and was therefore told to complete it. The episode also highlights the Midrashic connection between Pinchas and Yosef through his mother’s lineage (Putiel / Yisro).Rabbi Wolbe focuses on the seven names of Yisro, particularly “Putiel.” While it can be interpreted negatively (fattening calves for idol worship), it can also be seen positively: Yisro was at the “fat” (peak) of his illustrious career and sacrificed everything to join the Jewish people. This leads to a powerful discussion on perspective — choosing to see the positive in people, situations, spouses, children, and even world events. The episode ties beautifully into the Three Weeks: lasting change in avoiding Lashon Hara comes not from simply stopping negative speech, but from changing how we view others. Rabbi Wolbe encourages judging the whole person favorably (kol ha’adam l’kaf zechus), practicing hakaras hatov (gratitude), and refusing to be kafui tov (one who rejects the good done for us). He applies this to family life, parenting, and current events, urging listeners to avoid knee-jerk negativity from media narratives. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the combined Torah portions of Matos and Mas'ei, which conclude the Book of Numbers. He highlights the turbulent history of the Jewish people in Numbers, marked by crises like the spies, Korach’s rebellion, and the Baal Peor incident, setting the stage for Deuteronomy’s review of the Torah’s teachings over Moses’ final 36 days. Rabbi Wolbe delves into Matos, which opens with the laws of oaths, emphasizing the sacredness of one’s word. He stresses that in God’s world, every spoken commitment must be fulfilled, as one’s word reflects their relationship with the divine attribute of truth (Emet). He shares stories of sages like Rabbi Siegel, who left a wedding early to honor a promise to a child, and Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel, who, despite severe Parkinson’s, attended a bris to keep his word, illustrating the meticulous care sages took to uphold truth. Rabbi Wolbe recounts an anecdote about Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky, who chose an authentic sermon over a polished one during a rabbinic interview to avoid misleading a congregation, underscoring the importance of absolute truth. The episode also covers the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and half of Menashe opting to settle in Transjordan, contingent on aiding the conquest of Israel, highlighting communal responsibility. Rabbi Wolbe defines spirituality as infusing physical actions—like prayer or mitzvot—with divine meaning, contrasting this with mere religion, and urges listeners to live with absolute truth to emulate God. He concludes by encouraging self-evaluation to ensure one’s actions align with divine truth, preparing for the ultimate accountability before God. In this Parsha Review Podcast episode on Parshas Pinchas, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe highlights Pinchas’ heroic act at the end of last week’s portion — zealously stopping the plague by confronting Zimri and Kozbi, thereby saving the Jewish people from assimilation and destruction plotted by Bilaam. The new parsha opens with Hashem’s reward: a covenant of peace and eternal priesthood for Pinchas and his descendants.Rabbi Wolbe explores the small Yud in Pinchas’ name as a profound hint: even an “ordinary” Jew (a small yud / yid) can rise to greatness and bring peace through decisive action for Heaven’s sake. He contrasts this with the absence of portions named after giants like Moshe or Aaron, noting that Pinchas exemplifies what every individual can achieve. The episode ties into the start of the Three Weeks, stressing Jewish unity, the power of common sense, objective truth, and the courage to stand up when others remain silent. Rabbi Wolbe encourages listeners not to hide their Judaism (e.g., mezuzah on the door) and to act effectively rather than just make noise — rebuke only when it can be heard, but never stay passive in the face of wrong.  In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses Parshas Pinchas, focusing on the story of Pinchas’s zealous act against Zimri and Cosbi, who publicly defied God’s will by engaging in illicit relations, as described in Numbers 25. Rabbi Wolbe highlights the danger of blurring moral lines, as Zimri attempted by bringing a Moabite woman into the Jewish community, comparing it to Rebecca’s relief upon learning her conflicting womb movements were due to twins with distinct destinies, not a single confused child. He emphasizes that clarity in commitment to Torah and mitzvahs is crucial, drawing parallels to Haman’s and Amalek’s attempts to assimilate and confuse the Jewish people, urging listeners to avoid compromise in spiritual matters and to define their stance firmly on the side of holiness and light.Rabbi Wolbe encourages small, intentional steps toward observance without compromising core commitments, using examples like health goals to illustrate the importance of mental resolve even if actions lag. He stresses the need for wisdom to distinguish between holy and unholy, as recited in Havdalah and Talmudic prayers, to avoid confusion. A story of a newly observant Jew publicly affirming their identity as a religious Jew underscores how verbalizing commitment clarifies one’s path. Rabbi Wolbe concludes by urging listeners to manifest their spiritual goals through clear identification with Torah values, fostering a deeper connection to God and a purposeful Shabbos. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Balak, focusing on the story of Balak, the king of Moab, who hires the powerful prophet Bilaam to curse the Jewish people (Numbers 22). Rabbi Wolbe recounts the riveting narrative where Bilaam’s donkey, divinely enabled to speak, rebukes him for striking it, symbolizing resistance to his mission to curse the Jews. Rashi’s commentary highlights the donkey’s reference to “three times” as an allusion to the Jewish people’s observance of the three festivals (Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot), which Bilaam seeks to undermine. Rabbi Wolbe explains why the festivals define the Jewish people, emphasizing the miraculous nature of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, which, like a deer’s hide, supernaturally expands to accommodate millions during these pilgrimages without anyone feeling cramped. This contrasts sharply with Bilaam’s frustration when his donkey pins his leg against a wall, revealing his inability to tolerate minor discomfort, unlike the Jewish people who trust in Hashem’s providence. Rabbi Wolbe draws a broader lesson, contrasting Bilaam’s arrogance and reliance on material wealth with the Jewish people’s faith in Hashem’s control, as seen in historical miracles like the Six-Day War and the protection of Jewish homes during festival pilgrimages. He critiques the modern notion of “financial security” as a form of arrogance, urging listeners to let go of self-reliance and trust in Hashem while still acting responsibly. Using the metaphor of a tractor-trailer stuck under an overpass, he suggests “letting the air out of our arrogance” to align with divine will. The episode concludes with a call to live with faith, recognizing that Hashem orchestrates every outcome, and to embrace this trust for a meaningful Shabbos and life. Have you ever wondered why a pagan prophet's words are featured so prominently in the Torah? Join us as we explore the enigmatic story of Parsha Balak, where King Balak's relentless efforts to curse the Jewish people through Balaam the prophet are thwarted by divine intervention. We unravel Balaam's complex character, revealed through his bizarre interaction with a talking donkey and his covetous nature. In particular, we scrutinize the poignant verse from Chapter 23, Verse 10, where Balaam paradoxically wishes to die as righteously as the patriarchs despite failing to live a life of righteousness. This episode powerfully illustrates the futility of seeking repentance at the eleventh hour and underscores the daily opportunities to connect with God through the 613 commandments. We then delve into the spiritual treasure trove that is the Shema, drawing wisdom from the Zohar. We discuss how the Shema's 248 words correspond to the 248 limbs of the human body, emphasizing the power of its recitation in dispelling negative energies. Simple yet profound morning rituals like washing hands, wearing tzitzit, and putting on tefillin are highlighted, offering practical guidance on living a meaningful Jewish life. With an engaging analogy involving a chocolate bar, we reflect on how dedicating even a small portion of our day to these mitzvot can yield profound spiritual rewards. Wrapping up, we encourage listeners to maximize every moment by connecting with the Almighty through His commandments and Torah study, enriching our lives in service to Hashem. May we all be blessed to live this way. Amen. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses Parshas Chukas, focusing on the red heifer (Parah Adumah) and its designation as "Zos Chukas HaTorah" (the decree of the Torah), highlighting its mysterious, reasonless nature as a divine command. He explains that mitzvahs, like honoring parents, don’t require full understanding to be fulfilled, using the red heifer as an example of submitting to God’s will, as even King Solomon couldn’t grasp its purpose. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that Torah study and mitzvah observance deepen with each repetition, elevating one’s connection, as seen in practices like Shabbos candle lighting or kosher laws, encouraging listeners to invest in spiritual growth for eternal rewards in the world to come. The episode also addresses the Jewish people’s complaints in the desert despite miraculous provisions like manna and Miriam’s spring, illustrating how habit can numb appreciation for miracles. Rabbi Wolbe urges breaking this cycle of routine to maintain awe for daily blessings, like the body’s functions or modern technology, and to approach relationships and mitzvahs with renewed passion. He concludes by discussing the brief eulogies for Miriam, Aaron, and Moshe, noting that their concise mention as servants of God reflects their selflessness and the Torah’s focus on the eternal world, not temporary worldly achievements, reinforcing the need to prioritize spiritual investment over materialism. In this Parsha Review Podcast episode on the double portion Chukas-Balak, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe focuses on the opening of Parshas Chukas and the enigmatic mitzvah of the Parah Aduma (Red Heifer). This completely red, unyoked cow whose ashes purify those contaminated by contact with the dead is presented as the quintessential “chok” — a divine decree whose reason is beyond human comprehension.Rabbi Wolbe explains that the Torah calls it “Zos Chukas HaTorah” (this is the decree of the Torah) to teach that the essence of Torah observance is fulfilling Hashem’s will, not only when we understand the reasons. He draws powerful parallels to the shofar on Rosh Hashanah (“Rachmana amar tik’u” — because the Merciful One said to blow it), the sages’ protective decrees (yichud, harchakos, not reading by candlelight on Shabbos), and the oral Torah’s necessity. Stories from the Talmud and historical examples illustrate the greatness of following rabbinic guidance even without full explanation, and the dangers of basing observance solely on logic or “reasons” (as seen in certain historical movements). The episode culminates in a call to observe all Mitzvos — even those we don’t fully understand, like avoiding Lashon Hara — purely because they are the divine will of Hashem, the ultimate Source. In this Parsha Review Podcast Episode of Parshas Korach, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the timeless difference between a disagreement for the sake of Heaven and a conflict driven by ego, jealousy, and personal ambition. Korach's rebellion against Moshe and Aaron was not merely a disagreement about leadership—it was a challenge to the very foundation of Divine authority. While Korach claimed that "the entire congregation is holy," his true motivation was personal power. Rabbi Wolbe explains that unlike the debates of Hillel and Shammai, which sought truth, Korach's dispute was rooted in self-interest. The clearest proof is that Moshe was not fighting for himself at all; he was willing to step aside if Hashem chose otherwise. A central theme of the episode is that not every argument is a fight. The Talmud is filled with disagreements, yet those debates were conducted with mutual respect and a shared pursuit of truth. Moshe demonstrates extraordinary humility by refusing to make the conflict personal. Rather than defending his honor, he places the matter entirely in Hashem's hands and even delays judgment in the hope that Korach and his followers might reconsider overnight. Rabbi Wolbe teaches that true leadership is not about protecting one's position, but about faithfully serving the mission Hashem assigns. The episode then broadens into a powerful lesson about strife in everyday life. Drawing from Pirkei Avos and the Pele Yoetz, Rabbi Wolbe explains that arguments, grudges, and personal battles often stem from an inflated sense of ownership and entitlement. When a person realizes that everything belongs to Hashem and that they are merely His servant, many conflicts simply disappear. Whether in marriage, business, friendships, or communal life, peace comes when people seek truth rather than victory and purpose rather than personal glory. The enduring message of Korach is that humility unites while ego divides, and that lasting peace begins when we stop fighting for ourselves and start serving Hashem. Discover the transformative power of disagreement when approached with respect and understanding. In this episode, we unravel the story of Korach's rebellion against Moshe from Parshas Korach and draw from Rashi's teachings to highlight how disagreements can be natural and beneficial if they remain respectful. By sharing anecdotes of passionate debates among former Mossad leaders and rabbis over Talmudic interpretations, we illustrate how strong opposing views can coexist within respectful discourse. These lessons are increasingly vital in a world where political and social disagreements often escalate into personal conflicts. We also reflect on the role of conflict within relationships, using Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Aurbach as an example to emphasize that a lack of conflict might indicate a lack of true engagement. Extending this idea to international relations, we tackle the complexities of achieving peace between Israelis and Iranians, showcasing the importance of offering dignified exits from conflict. We examine strategies such as those employed by Trump to highlight the importance of allowing all parties to save face. As we conclude, we share a poignant story about the protective power of Torah books during a missile attack in Israel, underscoring the enduring need for peace and safety. Join us for a thought-provoking journey that emphasizes the pursuit of peace in our lives, both personally and globally. In this Parsha Review of Parshas Shelach, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the tragic episode of the spies and uncovers a powerful lesson about perspective, positivity, and the way we choose to see the world. The Torah juxtaposes the story of the spies with Miriam's punishment for speaking negatively about Moshe Rabbeinu. Rashi explains that the spies witnessed Miriam's consequences yet failed to learn the lesson. Their true failure was not merely that they spoke negatively about the Land of Israel—it was that they approached the mission with a flawed perspective. When a person looks through a lens of negativity, even a land flowing with milk and honey appears frightening and impossible. A central theme of the episode is that reality is often shaped by the attitude with which we approach it. Rabbi Wolbe draws from the Talmudic discussion regarding how one praises a bride, explaining that true wisdom is learning to recognize and focus on the good that already exists. The spies saw giants, danger, and obstacles because they were looking for problems. Yehoshua and Kalev saw opportunity, promise, and Divine blessing because they were looking through eyes of faith. The difference was not the facts—they all saw the same land. The difference was perspective. Rabbi Wolbe extends this lesson to modern relationships, parenting, leadership, politics, and personal growth. Negative thinking creates a cycle where criticism breeds more criticism and conflict breeds more conflict. Positive thinking, however, creates momentum toward understanding, gratitude, and growth. Whether in marriage, family life, community leadership, or our relationship with Hashem, the challenge is to break cycles of negativity and intentionally cultivate a positive outlook. The episode concludes with a call to adjust our spiritual "glasses" so that we learn to see blessing, opportunity, and goodness where others may only see problems. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, we explore the Torah portion Shalach, focusing on the story of the twelve spies sent to scout the land of Israel. Ten of the spies return with a negative report, causing despair among the Jewish people, which leads to the tragic establishment of Tisha B'Av, a day marked by historical calamities. In contrast, Joshua and Calev offer a positive perspective, highlighting the importance of faith in Hashem’s promise. We delve into the mitzvah of Tzitzis (fringes on four-cornered garments), recited twice daily in the Shema, which serves as a visual reminder of all 613 commandments. He explains that Tzitzis, with their numerical value and structure (600 plus 8 strings and 5 knots), symbolize the entire Torah, encouraging spiritual mindfulness and adherence to God’s laws, particularly for men, as the mitzvah is time-bound and not obligatory for women. We emphasize the power and danger of the eyes, which can lead to holiness or temptation, as cautioned in the verse urging not to stray after one’s heart or eyes. We connect this to modern challenges, where technology and social media, designed to be addictive, can draw people away from their values. Drawing from personal anecdotes, such as a student wearing Tzitzis discreetly and his own experience in Jerusalem’s marketplace, he warns against the spiritual risks of unchecked visual intake. We advocate for mental engagement with Torah to guard against boredom and temptation, citing the practices of tech CEOs who limit phone use for productivity. We conclude by urging listeners to control their eyes, create a personal sanctuary for Hashem, and recite the Shema daily as a reminder to stay focused on holiness, praying for divine protection and a blessed Shabbos.
