In this continuation of the Gate of Flattery (Sha'ar HaChanufah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe examines the seventh component: the sin of abstaining from rebuke (tochacha) when one knows the community or individuals are "stiff-necked" (k'shei oref) and unlikely to listen. While it's a mitzvah not to reprove a mocker who will hate you (per Proverbs), one must not assume failure without trying—perhaps the words will penetrate and inspire change. Even righteous people were punished in the Temple's destruction for not rebuking when possible. Silence can imply agreement, especially when hearing lashon hara, profanity, or mockery of Torah/mitzvot; one should speak wisely or zealously defend Hashem's honor (as in Ramchal's Mesilat Yesharim, Ch. 19), showing love for God by hating His enemies and subduing evil influence.Rabbi Wolbe stresses strategic rebuke—knowing the person (e.g., parents sometimes achieve more by silent example than words), avoiding unnecessary hatred, and recognizing when flattery or excessive courtesy to the wicked is forbidden (except out of real fear for safety). He cites Mordechai's refusal to bow to Haman as exemplary: as leader, he could not validate evil, even for peace. Neutrality or honor toward the wicked (e.g., praising them or being overly cordial) validates sin and risks personal corruption through constant exposure. The Holy of Holies had two cherubim facing each other (God & Israel); when Jews follow Torah, they face; when not, they turn away. He asks, “Do you expect to live another 70 years?” The man replies: “My ancestors planted for me; I plant for my children.” Choni falls asleep for 70 years (hidden by a rock formation), wakes to see the same scene repeated by the planter’s grandson. His donkey has produced generations of offspring. He returns home; no one believes he is Choni. Distraught (no longer honored in the study hall), he prays to die—and dies. Lesson: “Either companionship or death”—without purpose and recognition, life loses meaning.Abba Hilkiah (Choni’s grandson) — When drought struck, rabbis sent messengers to pray for rain. His unusual behavior (not greeting them, carrying items oddly, wife adorned, etc.) is explained with deep intention: diligence in work, protecting borrowed items, modesty, concern for strangers, prioritizing the hungry child (who studies Torah all day), and his wife’s greater merit (she gives bread directly to the poor; he gives money). Clouds came first from her corner. Lesson: True righteousness is hidden; small acts reflect profound character and merit.Choni’s other grandson (Hanan HaNechba) — When rain was needed, schoolchildren grabbed his garment and cried, “Father, give us rain!” He prayed humbly: “They don’t know the difference between the Father who gives rain and one who doesn’t—send rain for these innocent children.” Called “the hidden” because he concealed himself even in private (modesty in restroom). Lesson: Pure, childlike faith and humility draw divine response.The rabbi emphasizes: Choni’s 70-year sleep teaches planting for future generations (legacy over instant gratification). True greatness is hidden righteousness, self-control, and concern for others. We must live with intention, dignity, and long-term vision—actions today affect descendants tomorrow. Instead, pray for their improvement.Personal story — A woman was deeply hurt by another’s nasty comment in class. Rabbi advised praying for the offender’s insight rather than confrontation. Haman had everything—wealth, power, the king’s ring, family, universal bowing—yet one Jew (Mordechai) refusing to bow made it all “worth nothing” to him.This mirrors Adam and Eve: they had everything in Eden except one tree—yet focused only on what they lacked, leading to disaster. The flaw of humanity is looking outside (coveting what others have) instead of inside (recognizing Hashem’s perfect gifts). Jealousy (Lo Tachmod)—the last of the Ten Commandments—directly opposes the first (“Anochi Hashem Elokecha”): coveting denies Hashem’s plan for you.Key to Adar joy (Mishenichnas Adar marbim b’simcha): Look inside—Alef-Dar (“the Master resides within you”). Yet both are binding—do them because “God said so,” not just because they “feel good.”No compromise in halacha — Halacha never splits the difference (e.g., no “30-foot sukkah” between 20 and 40 feet). Key teachings:The soul’s origin — Created from the place of the Holy Spirit (ruach hakodesh) and the celestial radiance of Hashem’s throne (Genesis 2:7: “He breathed into his nostrils a living soul”). Above (in the Holy of Holies), there is no falsehood—only truth. “Hashem Elokeinu Emet” (Hashem our God is truth, Jeremiah 10:10).Ehyeh asher Ehyeh — “I will be what I will be” (Exodus 3:14). The word “Ehyeh” (21) appears 21 times in Tanach; 21 × 21 = 441 = gematria of emet (truth). God is absolute truth.Man’s purpose — Created straight/upright (yashar) to reflect truth. God’s “seal” is truth (Shabbat 55a). Falsehood cannot attach to truth; a truthful person has Hashem’s throne suspended above him, protecting him.Practical implications — When one lives in truth, all creation acknowledges Hashem as Creator (Psalms 146: “He guards truth forever”). Falsehood contradicts the godly soul within us—lying creates inner conflict and separation from God.Hashem responds to truth — “Hashem is close to all who call upon Him—in truth” (Psalms 145:18). Only authentic, truthful prayer connects deeply.Modern application — Truth stands forever (emet has legs on aleph, mem, tav—beginning, middle, end); falsehood collapses (sheker has one leg).
