In Day 197, the final lesson of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe brings the entire journey to its culmination. The author returns to the idea that the human being is an Olam Katan—a miniature world. The wonders of creation, both physical and spiritual, are reflected within the human being, and the soul itself reflects, in an infinitely limited way, attributes that point us toward the Creator. Just as the soul fills the body, sustains it, outlives it, sees without being seen, remains pure, and does not sleep, so Hashem fills, sustains, transcends, sees, and governs His universe. This realization should lead not to pride, but to humility, awe, gratitude, and responsibility. Rabbi Wolbe urges us to contemplate the extraordinary design of the human body—from our eyes and ears to our breath, bones, skin, and countless systems—and ask: Who gave me all of this? The more deeply we appreciate how much Hashem has invested in us, the more we understand that our lives carry purpose and obligation. Yirat Shamayim is not despair or fearfulness; it is the awareness that we have been entrusted with something extraordinarily precious. The entire book ultimately comes down to the words of Kohelet: “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man.” After studying humility, arrogance, love, hatred, mercy, cruelty, happiness, jealousy, worry, repentance, Torah, and countless other middot, the final challenge is internal. It is no longer simply about how we appear to others, but about the private relationship between the individual and Hashem: Do I truly fear God? Is my relationship with Hashem where it should be? Inspiration must become action. Torah must change us.The conclusion takes on additional meaning as Rabbi Wolbe notes that the class coincides with his Hebrew birthday. He offers a heartfelt blessing to the TORCH community for health, happiness, gratitude, spiritual growth, and a genuine relationship with Hashem. He encourages each listener to view every new year of life as another opportunity to recommit to service, growth, and appreciation for the gift of another day. And, fittingly, the journey does not truly end. Rabbi Wolbe immediately opens Shaar HaBitachon, the Gate of Trust in God, from Chovot HaLevavot. The message is clear: when Torah learning concludes, we begin again. Bitachon means learning to release our illusion of control and place our reliance entirely in Hashem—like a child resting securely in the arms of a loving parent. The completion of Orchot Tzaddikim therefore becomes the beginning of the next spiritual journey. We entered Rosh Hashanah and declared that Hashem is our King and we are His subjects, allowing us to move into Yom Kippur so we could reflect on our previous year and discern when our thoughts, words, and actions were not congruent with that truth. And now it is time to enter our Sukkahs, designed like His arm reaching around us and holding us close. It’s time to recalibrate back to the truth that the only power is the Almighty and that what is central to our lives is not our careers, politics, and other material pursuits, but simply to serve the King by fulfilling his Torah. In this episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains why Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hoshana Raba, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah are all connected and much, much more. This podcast was recorded for the Shema Podcast by Dan Kullman, President of TORCH, and joined with Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Executive Director of TORCH.  Recorded on September 29, 2020, in Houston, TexasPlease visit www.torchweb.org to see a full listing of our Jewish outreach and educational resources available in the Greater Houston area and please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help support our global outreach at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this episode of the Everyday Judaism Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses Siman 134 of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, covering the laws of building a sukkah, timed with the preparation period between Yom Kippur (September 20, 2025) and Sukkot (September 25, 2025). He emphasizes the mitzvah’s spiritual significance as a divine “hug” and a fresh start post-Yom Kippur. Key points include:Sukkot’s Timing and Purpose: The days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot are “free days” for preparation (building sukkahs, selecting four species), keeping one too busy to sin. Sukkot, called “Yom HaRishon” (first day), is the first opportunity for sin post-Yom Kippur, making it a time to establish new, righteous habits. Dwelling in the sukkah mirrors the Clouds of Glory that protected the Israelites in the desert, symbolizing divine protection and closeness.Halachot of Sukkah Construction (Siman 134):Halacha 1: It’s a mitzvah to build the sukkah immediately after Yom Kippur, even on Erev Shabbos (e.g., September 21, 2025). Choose a clean, stable location (e.g., driveway, not mud). Everyone, even dignitaries, should personally participate in building, though the Shehechiyanu blessing is covered by the Kiddush on Sukkot’s first night.Halacha 2: Beautify the sukkah with nice furnishings (e.g., tablecloths, artwork), as one would a home, to honor the mitzvah and the spiritual “guests” (Ushpizin: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc.). Walls must be sturdy, with at least two and a half walls, symbolizing Hashem’s hug.Halacha 3–4: Schach must grow from the ground, be detached, and not be susceptible to ritual impurity (tumah). Bamboo mats or tree branches are ideal; pre-cut wood slats or utensils (e.g., ladders, shovels) are invalid. Consult a rabbi if proper schach is unavailable. Supports for schach can be tumah-susceptible items (e.g., metal) after the fact, though stringencies avoid metal entirely.Halacha 5: Schach must provide more shade than sunlight on the floor. If sunlight exceeds shade or there’s a three-tefach (handbreadth) gap, the sukkah is invalid. Thick schach blocking all stars is still kosher, but if it prevents rain penetration, it’s like a permanent roof and invalid.Halacha 6–7: A sukkah needs at least three walls. Invalid schach (e.g., four tefachim wide, about 16 inches) can split a three-walled sukkah, invalidating it. A space less than four amos (eight feet) from a wall is considered a “bent wall,” valid as part of the sukkah, but don’t sit under it. Schach under tree branches (attached to the ground) is invalid, even if cut later, unless lifted and replaced for the sukkah’s sake.Halacha 8–9: For built-in sukkahs with retractable roofs, open the roof before placing schach. A sukkah doesn’t require a mezuzah if temporary, but a permanent sukkah (e.g., part of a house) does. A borrowed sukkah is valid, but a stolen one or one in a public domain is not, unless no alternative exists.Halacha 10–12: Don’t cut schach from others’ trees without permission. Building a sukkah during Chol HaMoed is permitted. Sukkah materials (walls, schach) are designated for the mitzvah and can’t be repurposed (e.g., as a toothpick) until after Simchas Torah.Halacha 13–15: Don’t step on or degrade sukkah materials post-holiday, as they were used for a mitzvah, like tzitzis. Don’t engrave Torah verses on food decorations (e.g., gourds), as they’ll rot, disrespecting the verses. On Erev Sukkos, avoid eating bread after midday to enter the sukkah with an appetite. Increase charity before Sukkot to enhance the mitzvah.Spiritual Insights: The sukkah represents leaving comfort zones to bond with Hashem, as the Israelites did in the desert, protected by the Clouds of Glory. Rabbi Wolbe shares a story of a community member who builds sukkahs for free, reflecting the mitzvah’s joy, and his childhood memories of using tarps in Brooklyn to shield sukkahs from rain, emphasizing practical challenges and solutions. The episode concludes with a blessing for a meaningful Sukkot, encouraging listeners to embrace the holiday’s spiritual renewal and closeness with Hashem, followed by an invitation to the “Ask Away” segment. In this bonus episode of the Everyday Judaism Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe covers the 17 sections of Siman 131 from the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, detailing the laws and customs of Erev Yom Kippur, a day blending penitential preparation and festive joy in anticipation of Hashem’s mercy on the Day of Atonement. Key practices include:Kaparos: A customary atonement ritual performed early in the morning, using a rooster for males, a hen for females, or money (preferred by Rabbi Wolbe for donation to Houston Tomchei Shabbos: https://tomchei-shabbat.com) to symbolize atonement, with white chickens preferred but not mandatory to avoid superstition. The ritual involves circling the item around the head while reciting prayers, emphasizing repentance over the act itself, with intestines offered to birds to invoke divine mercy.Festive Meals: A mitzvah to eat heartily, especially fish in the first meal and easily digestible foods like poultry in the second, avoiding spicy or warming foods, to equate eating on the 9th of Tishrei to fasting on the 10th.Seeking Forgiveness: Yom Kippur atones only for sins against Hashem, not interpersonal wrongs, requiring direct appeasement or mediation for forgiveness, with a call to forgive sincerely, as withholding forgiveness is un-Jewish. Rabbi Wolbe shares a story of Rabbi Mordechai Schwab’s sensitivity in protecting his father from embarrassment, exemplifying righteous compassion.Mikvah Immersion: Men customarily immerse in a mikvah after midday for spiritual purity and repentance, with no barriers like jewelry allowed; women typically do not unless specific conditions apply.Candles and Clothing: Lighting candles for the home and synagogue, wearing Shabbos garments for Mincha, and donning a kittel (white robe) to evoke humility, with women wearing white but avoiding jewelry.Vidui and Blessings: Reciting the confession prayer after Mincha’s silent Amidah, striking the chest for each sin, and parents blessing children with a special prayer for righteousness and a good life, found in the Machzor.Other Customs: Omitting certain prayers (e.g., Mizmor L’Todah, Avinu Malkeinu), receiving symbolic lashes in some Sephardic communities, and preparing the home with white tablecloths to honor Yom Kippur as a festival. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes starting Yom Kippur early, avoiding preparations for after the fast, and concludes with a story of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein’s brother-in-law, illustrating how sponsoring a mikvah fulfills teshuvah’s three steps (regret, acceptance, action), reinforcing the theme of actionable repentance.Rabbi Wolbe concludes with a blessing for complete atonement, a sweet and healthy new year, and acceptance of sincere repentance. To donate to Houston's Tomchei Shabbos: https://tomchei-shabbat.com The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses Parshas Ha’azinu (Deuteronomy 32), a prophetic song read on the Shabbos following Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (September 20-21, 2025). He connects the parsha’s themes to the spiritual preparation for Yom Kippur, emphasizing teshuvah (repentance) and the bedtime Shema as a daily practice to align with divine purpose. Key points include:Parshas Ha’azinu Context: The parsha, a song foretelling the Jewish people’s future, includes a verse (Deuteronomy 32:20) about afflictions against enemies, which Rabbi Wolbe interprets spiritually as the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination). He cites the Talmud (Rabbi Yitzchak) that reciting the bedtime Shema protects against spiritual “demons” or negative impulses, linking this to the parsha’s message.Yom Kippur Connection: Yom Kippur, beginning with Kol Nidre on September 20, 2025, is a time of purity and unlimited potential through teshuvah. Rabbi Wolbe highlights four designated times for repentance: the Ten Days of Repentance (culminating in Yom Kippur), Erev Rosh Chodesh (Yom Kippur Katan), Erev Shabbos, and before sleep (bedtime Shema). These moments mirror Yom Kippur’s introspective judgment.Bedtime Shema’s Power: The bedtime Shema, distinct from morning and evening Shema, is a “micro Yom Kippur” where one forgives others, confesses sins, and seeks divine mercy, as outlined in its prayer text. Covering the eyes during Shema symbolizes focusing spiritual vision over physical distractions, aligning with Yom Kippur’s theme of self-accountability (chosem yad kol adam bo, “the signature of every person” in the book of life).Practical Application: Rabbi Wolbe proposes a resolution for the new year: recite the bedtime Shema nightly, reflecting for five seconds on daily actions to strengthen good deeds and correct misdeeds. This practice protects against negative influences, fosters teshuvah, and aligns one’s life with Hashem’s will (Shema Yisrael, declaring Hashem’s oneness).Anecdotes and Insights: He shares a story of a recovering addict who transformed after seeing his potential in a mirror, paralleling the introspective power of the bedtime Shema. Rabbi Wolbe critiques modern distractions (e.g., smartphones) and the tendency to judge others, urging listeners to focus on self-improvement and forgiveness, especially for Yom Kippur. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores ten powerful dimensions of the shofar, based on the teachings of Rav Saadia Gaon. He begins with the very pattern of the shofar sounds themselves: the firm tekiah, the broken shevarim, the shattered teruah, and finally another strong tekiah. This sequence reflects the rhythm of human life. We experience times of confidence, periods of brokenness, and moments when we feel shattered—but we can become whole again. The shofar tells us that this cycle is not a failure; it is part of the journey Hashem created for us. The first reasons for the shofar focus on our relationship with Hashem. It coronates Hashem as our personal King, awakens us to teshuvah, and recalls the revelation at Mount Sinai, when every Jewish soul experienced extraordinary closeness and clarity. The shofar also echoes the calls of the prophets, whose blasts were designed to wake the Jewish people from spiritual complacency. Hearing it should therefore never be passive; it is meant to awaken us and make the kingship of Hashem real in our lives.  Other meanings connect the shofar to the destruction and future rebuilding of the Temple, the binding of Isaac, awe and humility, and the Day of Judgment. The Akeidah represents absolute dedication to Hashem, while the shofar’s call to humility reminds us that although we are tiny in comparison with the universe, Hashem still desires a personal relationship with each of us. On Rosh Hashanah, we must also prepare our case before the heavenly Judge: Why should Hashem grant us another year, and what will we do differently with the life and blessings He gives us?   The final themes look toward redemption: the ingathering of the exiles and the resurrection of the dead will also be accompanied by the shofar. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that prayer itself can happen anywhere—not only in a synagogue or with a siddur. Prayer means opening the heart and speaking directly with Hashem, whether in Houston, on the highway, at a red light, or in a doctor’s waiting room. The shofar ultimately becomes a form of communication beyond words—a spiritual “send button” carrying our deepest message to Hashem.   Rabbi Wolbe concludes by encouraging listeners to prepare before the shofar is blown. Close your eyes, stop everything else, and ask: What is my message to Hashem? Perhaps it is simply, “I want to be closer to You. Help me remove the barriers and limitations that keep me from growing.” This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinThe Episode is dedicated in honor of Ziggy GruberRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on September 8, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on September 9, 2026 Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at [email protected] or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.   About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: [email protected] Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the Torah’s description of an unnamed mitzvah that is “very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart.” Following the Ramban, he explains that this refers to Teshuvah. Repentance is not reserved for unusually righteous people, nor can a person become too distant for Hashem to want him back. Whatever someone’s history, mistakes, or background, the path of return remains open. The extraordinary accessibility of Teshuvah is part of its beauty. A Jew does not need an intermediary to obtain forgiveness. There is no magical formula and no other person who must atone on our behalf. We speak directly to Hashem. The Torah describes Teshuvah as being “in your mouth and in your heart”: use your words, awaken your heart, acknowledge what needs to change, and restore the relationship with the Creator who is waiting to hear from you.Rabbi Wolbe then shares a Hasidic insight into the word “zot”—“this”—whose numerical value is 408. In the High Holiday prayers, three forces are identified as having the power to remove an evil decree: Teshuvah, Tefillah, and Tzedakah—repentance, prayer, and charity. The traditional words associated with them—fasting, voice, and money—also total 408. Together they provide a practical model for change: stop the behavior that distances us from Hashem, raise our voice in sincere prayer, and give generously of what we have. In Days 195–196 of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Fear of Heaven by developing the idea that the human being is a microcosm of the entire world. Just as creation contains trees, herbs, fruits, waters, rivers, stones, mountains, winds, and countless other systems, the human body contains parallel structures and functions. The author uses these comparisons to awaken awe at the complexity and wisdom Hashem embedded within us.The lesson moves through a series of physical parallels: the digestive system is compared to the depths of the earth, arteries to rivers, bones to the foundations of the world, kidneys and bodily ducts to waterways, and the various fluids of the body to the different waters found throughout creation. The message is not merely anatomical. It is that the human body itself reflects a larger Divine pattern and should inspire a deeper appreciation of the Creator.Day 196 expands the comparison further. The Orchot Tzaddikim parallels hot and cold winds with human breath, thunder with the human voice, lightning with the brightness of the face, mountains with the body's joints and structures, stones with teeth and bones, soil with flesh and skin, vegetation with human hair, and even the zodiac with the spinal column and its attached structures. The author also describes ancient forms of wisdom through which sages were said to discern future events from natural signs, bodily features, vegetation, and other aspects of creation.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by emphasizing the wonder of the human body. The same wisdom Hashem placed throughout the cosmos is, in miniature, embedded within each person. The point is not to become distracted by speculative worlds beyond us, but to recognize the extraordinary miracle already present within our own bodies. The more carefully we contemplate ourselves, the more opportunities we have to develop Yirat Shamayim—awareness, reverence, and awe of Hashem. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the Talmud’s teaching that Teshuvah is so powerful that even one individual who repents can bring forgiveness to the entire world. Moshe’s prayer after the sin of the Golden Calf demonstrates how one person’s sincere return can affect an entire people. Teshuvah is therefore never merely private; a single person’s spiritual transformation can have consequences far beyond himself. The Talmud then defines complete repentance: when a person encounters the same temptation that previously caused him to sin, yet this time resists it—again and again. Rabbi Wolbe explains that this is not an unattainable ideal. If someone once gave in to a temptation, spoke hurtfully, or acted contrary to Torah, genuine teshuvah is demonstrated when the same opportunity returns and the person now chooses differently. A baal teshuvah becomes, quite literally, a “master of repentance.” But transformation does not mean becoming someone else. Rabbi Wolbe stresses that the objective of Torah learning and TORCH is not to make every person identical. Hashem created each individual with a unique upbringing, personality, intelligence, circumstances, strengths, and struggles. The question on Rosh Hashanah is not, “Why weren’t you like someone else?” It is: Why weren’t you the fullest version of yourself? Using the analogy of a cooking competition, Rabbi Wolbe explains that we cannot complain about the ingredients we were given. Our task is to create the finest possible life from our own particular ingredients. Teshuvah and the High Holidays invite us to know ourselves, stop comparing our journey with others, and use whatever time remains to become the unique person Hashem intended us to be. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores what it really means to stand in judgment on Rosh Hashanah. Drawing on the Mishnah’s description that every person passes before Hashem “Kivnei Maron,” he explains that the heavenly judgment is intensely personal. We are not evaluated merely as members of a crowd. Hashem looks at each individual—the words we spoke, the abilities we were given, what we accomplished with those gifts, and the influence our choices had on the people around us.  The first area of accountability is speech. What did we talk about throughout the year? Were our words truthful? Did we fulfill our commitments? What did we praise and value? Rabbi Wolbe invokes King Solomon’s teaching that a person can be understood by what he praises. Our conversations reveal what occupies our hearts: materialism and distractions, or growth, relationships, family, Torah, and becoming better servants of Hashem. The second area is personal potential. Hashem does not compare us to our neighbors; He compares us to the person we were capable of becoming. Through the story of the Netziv—who feared arriving in Heaven only to be asked, “Where is your book?”—Rabbi Wolbe teaches that we may possess abilities far beyond what our parents, teachers, or even we ourselves imagine. We are not masters of results, but we are responsible for effort. Selling ourselves short means leaving Divine gifts unused.  The third area is influence. Every person affects others, especially in a world where our words and actions are constantly visible. Do people become stronger because they watch us, or do our compromises give them permission to compromise as well? Rabbi Wolbe shares his grandfather’s advice that one powerful preparation for Rosh Hashanah is to become a valuable asset to the community—to serve, volunteer, uplift, encourage, and become someone whose presence matters to others. Ultimately, Rosh Hashanah is not meant to be approached only with dread. It is a magnificent festival in which we crown Hashem as King, realign our priorities, accept responsibility, and begin again. The Ten Days of Repentance then allow us to prove that our declarations were genuine, culminating in Yom Kippur and a new path forward. In Day 194 of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Fear of Heaven with a fascinating comparison between the human being and the universe itself. If mankind reflects Hashem in a tiny and limited way, then the structure of the human body can likewise be understood as a miniature reflection of the greater world. The Orchot Tzaddikim draws parallels between the heavens and the human body: the skull resembles the heavenly firmament; the palate creates divisions within the body just as the firmament separates the waters; and the life-giving soul resides within and directs the body. Just as the universe is governed by the One Creator, the many organs and systems of the human body are unified and directed by one life-force.The author continues this imagery by comparing the seven openings of the head—two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and the mouth—to the heavenly luminaries and planets. The larger message is that the human being is a remarkable microcosm of Hashem's creation. The more carefully we contemplate ourselves and the world around us, the more opportunities we have to recognize the wisdom embedded throughout creation.Rabbi Wolbe then turns from anatomy to character. Just as the animal kingdom contains gentle creatures as well as predators, human beings can develop very different qualities. Some live peacefully and compassionately, while others behave like predatory animals—using their strength to hurt or take advantage of others. The crucial difference is that we can choose. Hashem created the abilities and forces within creation, but human beings decide how those powers will be expressed. We can use what Hashem has given us constructively or destructively. Fear of Heaven therefore means not merely marveling at creation, but recognizing our responsibility within it and consciously choosing what kind of person we wish to become. Drawing on Tractate Yoma 86b, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores several extraordinary teachings about the power of teshuvah. Repentance can reach the Divine Throne, bring redemption closer, and reopen a relationship that appears irreparably broken. The Torah prohibits a divorced woman who married another man from returning to her first husband, yet Hashem tells the Jewish people that despite their spiritual unfaithfulness, they may always return to Him. Hashem desires our closeness and never closes the door to sincere return. The Talmud then distinguishes between teshuvah motivated by fear and teshuvah motivated by love. When a person repents out of fear, deliberate transgressions are downgraded and treated like inadvertent mistakes. But when a person returns out of genuine love for Hashem, those same transgressions can be transformed into merits. The very failure that once created distance becomes the catalyst for a deeper and more devoted relationship.Rabbi Wolbe compares this process to a marriage. Disagreements can create painful tension, but when spouses accept responsibility, apologize sincerely, and work through the conflict, their relationship can emerge stronger than it was before. In the same way, sin strains our relationship with Hashem, but sincere teshuvah can elevate that relationship to an entirely new level. The fall itself is not the mitzvah; rather, the love, accountability, and renewed closeness produced through the return transform the meaning of the past. Drawing from Tractate Yoma 86a, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the Talmud’s declaration: “Great is teshuvah, for it brings healing to the world.” The Gemara describes repentance in different ways—sometimes as completely eradicating a person’s waywardness and sometimes as healing the spiritual damage that remains. The distinction depends not only on whether a person repents, but also on what motivates the repentance. The highest form is teshuvah out of love. When someone truly loves Hashem, even a small transgression feels like a betrayal of the relationship. The person is not merely worried about consequences; he is pained by the distance his actions created between himself and his Creator. This sincere desire to repair the relationship allows the person to return as a beloved child returning to a loving Father.A second level is teshuvah out of fear. Here, the person regrets his behavior because he fears judgment, punishment, or the consequences of continuing along the same path. The repentance is real and valuable, but its primary focus is avoiding what may happen to the sinner rather than repairing the relationship itself. The third and lowest level discussed is repentance prompted by suffering. A person feels cornered by pain and begins examining his conduct. Rabbi Wolbe shares his great-grandfather’s teaching that after prophecy departed from the world, pain became a kind of prophet—a force that can awaken a person and inspire honest introspection. Yet the ultimate goal is to rise beyond pain, then beyond fear, and reach the highest rung: returning to Hashem purely out of love. In this wide-ranging conversation with Chazak’s Torah Talks, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe shares the personal journey that shaped his commitment to Torah growth and outreach. At fifteen, he left an ordinary American high-school environment to attend a demanding yeshiva in Israel, where even reading a page of Gemara initially felt overwhelming. Rather than retreat, he prayed for the ability to learn and resolved to fight for his growth. He also reflects on the influence of his grandfather, Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe, and the rabbis who guided him personally—teachers who demonstrated that greatness requires persistence, effort, and “no shortcuts.”  The discussion then turns to Elul and the High Holiday journey. Rabbi Wolbe reframes yirah not simply as fear, but as the ability to see clearly, understand our lives, and place everything into proper perspective. On Rosh Hashanah, we sit at Hashem’s “boardroom table” without intermediaries and ask for another year. The forty days from Elul through Yom Kippur allow us to become a new creation, while Sukkot teaches us to step away from material comfort and establish Hashem—not possessions, money, or technology—as the center of our lives. Real spiritual growth, however, cannot be built on dramatic, unsustainable leaps. It begins with a direct and genuine relationship with Hashem, followed by one manageable step: understanding one line of prayer, improving one character trait, or creating a consistent connection with a rabbi. A person who wants guidance must actively pursue it rather than waiting for inspiration or mentorship to arrive conveniently.  Finally, Rabbi Wolbe teaches that struggle is not evidence of failure—it is evidence that we are alive and growing. Hashem crafts each person’s challenges as opportunities for elevation. We are not meant to imitate another person, rely passively on an illustrious family history, or believe that material success will eliminate life’s difficulties. There is only one version of each of us, and our responsibility is to use our unique circumstances, gifts, and challenges to become the person Hashem created us to be.Originally Produced and Published by Chazaq Torah Talks #117 (Queens, NY) and re-published by TORCH with permission.Watch @ www.Chazaq.org/Live / Listen @ jewishpodcasts.fm/chazaq This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinThis Episode is dedicated in Honor of Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at Chazaq HQ in Queens, NY on August 3, 2023, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 30, 2023 Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Ki Savo, the seventh portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, focusing on Deuteronomy 26:11, which instructs the Jewish people to rejoice in all the goodness given by Hashem, including to their households, the Levites, and converts. Rabbi Wolbe, citing the Orachaim HaKadosh, emphasizes that this "goodness" refers to the Torah, described as sweeter than honey, capable of transforming negative traits like arrogance or anger into positive ones, as it extracts impurities, much like honey purifies non-kosher items over time. He shares personal anecdotes, such as his excitement at understanding Talmud for the first time at age 15, and stories of great sages like the Steipler, who survived freezing conditions through immersion in Torah study, and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, whose Torah focus influenced even physical phenomena like a flickering light at his passing.Rabbi Wolbe underscores the Torah’s transformative power, urging listeners to engage with its living, relevant teachings daily, as exemplified by his grandfather’s advice to study a verse before leaving home to shield against temptation. He connects the parsha to current events, noting the Torah’s status as a "tree of life" that energizes and elevates, encouraging listeners to embrace its sweetness with passion and commitment, especially during Elul, and concludes with a blessing for deeper Torah connection. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe opens with the language of judgment, indictments, and mugshots to describe the approaching day of Rosh Hashanah. Yet the heavenly courtroom is unlike any human court. We will stand individually before Hashem without attorneys, representatives, or excuses—but instead of entering the day in despair, we dress in our finest clothing, enjoy festive meals, and celebrate. Rosh Hashanah is both a day of judgment and a joyful coronation of Hashem as King. The joy comes from knowing who the Judge is. Hashem is not a distant or biased human judge; He is the merciful King of kings who wants us to merit life, blessing, and success. Our task during Elul is to arrive with a plan: a thoughtful blueprint for the person we intend to become. The fear of Rosh Hashanah is therefore not merely terror. The Hebrew word yirah also points toward perspective—the recognition that despite technology’s illusion of control, Hashem alone governs the world. The Ten Days of Repentance then become a practical opportunity to demonstrate change. Each day of the week appears during that period, allowing us to show how our Sundays, Mondays, Shabbos observance, and ordinary routines will be different in the coming year. Hashem does not ask for vague promises; He asks us to put our resolutions into action.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by redefining success. Success is not simply wealth, status, or fame. True success means reaching our spiritual potential, strengthening our marriages and families, contributing to our community, refining our character, and deepening our connection with Hashem. The High Holidays invite us to prepare seriously, celebrate confidently, and ask for a year of genuine abundance in everything that truly matters. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that the High Holiday season carries its own spiritual atmosphere—a season of judgment, accountability, and personal responsibility. Rosh Hashanah is the moment to stop shifting blame and declare, “Hashem, the buck stops with me.” Although we may have fallen short during the year, these sacred days allow us to make amends, correct our direction, and begin again. A striking Midrash describes Moshe ascending through seven heavenly firmaments. In the highest firmament, closest to Hashem’s throne, the greatest angels offer their highest praise not to Torah, Israel, Jerusalem, Mashiach, or even the World to Come—but to teshuvah. A mitzvah brings us closer to Hashem, while sin creates distance and barriers. Teshuvah is more than the process of moving closer: it is the restoration of closeness itself.   On Rosh Hashanah, every individual passes before Hashem one at a time. Judaism does not view responsibility as a burden from which to escape; it celebrates responsibility, as demonstrated by the joy of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Rosh Hashanah is therefore both serious and joyful: it is a celebration of our accountability and our relationship with Hashem. The shofar’s ram horn reminds us that, even when we are trapped by habits, stubbornness, or self-doubt, we can break free and stop limiting who we can become.  Rabbi Wolbe concludes with a practical assignment: take out a blank piece of paper and write down everything you need to ask Hashem for—health, livelihood, forgiveness, relationships, children, healing, spiritual growth, and the needs of others. The entire month is spent composing that deeply personal message; the blast of the shofar is like pressing “send.” We should not simply arrive at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur unprepared. Like an attorney preparing a case, we must reflect, make amends, identify what needs to change, and approach Hashem with sincerity and purpose.  This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinThis Episode is dedicated in Honor of Alan FinkelmanRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on October 2020, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on September 14, 2021 Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe begins with the painful story of a seventy-year-old man who wished he had reordered his priorities decades earlier—placing greater emphasis on building a Jewish family rather than accumulating wealth and advancing his career. His experience reveals how deeply regret can hurt. Yet the purpose of reflecting on the past is not to remain trapped in sorrow over what might have been.Every person is given a unique life by Hashem: a particular history, family, personality, set of abilities, challenges, successes, and mistakes. Comparing our circumstances with another person’s is meaningless, because with their circumstances, we would no longer be ourselves. Hashem does not expect us to achieve someone else’s perfection. He gives each of us the precise tools needed to pursue our own.Regret is an essential part of teshuvah only when it leads immediately to change. The rearview mirror is necessary, but it is much smaller than the windshield because most of our attention must remain focused on the road ahead. No matter how many decades appear to have been wasted, we still have today. This is the day to transform regret into resolve and begin moving forward—one meaningful change at a time. In this episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe presents one of the most important tools for spiritual growth during Elul: never try to transform yourself by making an unsustainable leap. Although the weeks leading to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur inspire ambitious resolutions, genuine growth usually happens through small, deliberate steps. A person who tries to change everything at once is likely to fall—and may then blame Hashem, the process, or themselves for the failure.Rabbi Wolbe offers a powerful interpretation of the evening prayer asking Hashem to remove the spiritual adversary “from before us and from behind us.” The obstacles before us are the challenges that block our progress. The danger from behind is the voice that pushes us to move too quickly, take on too much, and run before we have learned to walk. Falling is not itself the greatest danger; righteous people fall and rise again. The greater danger is falling so painfully that we become discouraged and decide, “I tried. This is not for me.”Spiritual growth resembles climbing a ladder: one rung at a time. Instead of trying to master the entire prayer book, understand one line. Instead of imagining that you must learn the entire Talmud, begin with one word, one passage, or one page. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein’s attendance at a celebration for someone who completed a single page of Talmud demonstrates that an accomplishment’s greatness is measured not only by its size, but also by the effort, persistence, and obstacles overcome. As we prepare for the High Holidays, the goal is not to change everything—it is to choose one small, meaningful change that can last. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the distinctive meaning of the number forty in Judaism. Forty appears repeatedly at moments of creation and transformation: the Flood lasted forty days and nights, pregnancy lasts forty weeks, a mikvah requires forty se’ah of water, Moshe remained on Mount Sinai for forty days, and the journey from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur spans forty days. Even the Torah’s punishment of thirty-nine lashes is described as “forty minus one.” Together, these examples reveal forty as the number associated with becoming something new. Each example involves a fundamental change of state. The Flood renewed the world; gestation produces a new life; immersion in a mikvah moves a person from ritual impurity to purity; conversion creates a new Jewish identity; and Moshe’s ascent helped transform a nation of former slaves into a sanctified people. In the same way, the forty days from Elul through Yom Kippur give every person the ability to transform spiritually and approach Hashem as someone genuinely new.Teshuvah is not merely an apology for past actions. Sin creates barriers between a person and Hashem, while repentance removes those barriers and restores the original closeness of the relationship. This is why Yom Kippur, despite its fasting and seriousness, is one of the happiest days of the Jewish year: sincere repentance brings forgiveness, atonement, wholeness, and a clean slate. These forty days are a uniquely favorable period in which even an imperfect but genuine effort is precious to Hashem. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Ki Seitzei, the sixth portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, read during the month of Elul, a time of introspection before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rabbi Wolbe begins with Deuteronomy 21:10, which describes going out to war against enemies, interpreting the true battle as the internal struggle against the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination). He emphasizes that this parsha, always read in Elul, reflects the spiritual war against personal temptations, with Hashem promising victory to those who make the effort. Referencing Deuteronomy 28:47, Rabbi Wolbe notes that failing to serve Hashem with joy amidst abundance leads to spiritual downfall, a challenge as relevant today as in past generations. He contrasts two types of Teshuva (repentance): Teshuva me’yirah (out of fear), which turns sins into mistakes, and Teshuva me’ahavah (out of love), which transforms sins into mitzvot, as taught in the Talmud (Yoma 86). Quoting the Orchos Tzaddikim and Talmud Yoma, he shares a teaching about Moshe ascending the seven firmaments, where angels praise progressively greater divine gifts—culminating in Teshuva, which reaches God’s throne of glory, as per Hosea 14:2. Rabbi Wolbe illustrates this with a story of an elderly man whose past sins, through Teshuva me’ahavah, became the source of his righteousness. He shares a personal anecdote about apologizing to another rabbi, turning a moment of friction into a strengthened friendship, showing how challenges can elevate relationships when approached with love. Rabbi Wolbe urges listeners to face their personal battles—whether work, health, loneliness, or parenting—with heartfelt teshuvah, drawing inspiration from children’s pure prayers, and to trust in Hashem’s promise of success. He concludes with a blessing for a Shabbos filled with spiritual victory and connection to Hashem. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary power of beginnings. Drawing on examples involving Abraham, Noah, Rav Chia, the rededication of the Temple at Hanukkah, young Torah students, and the first year of marriage, he explains that beginnings establish roots and shape everything that follows. Because Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the new year, Elul is our opportunity to prepare ourselves to enter it in the purest, holiest, and most intentional state possible. Rosh Hashanah is presented as a microcosm of the coming year. Its joy, prayer, mitzvahs, symbolic foods, and spiritual atmosphere are not merely isolated customs; they express the kind of year we hope to create. Endings are equally important because every strong ending produces a new beginning. By finishing Elul with growth, higher standards, and changed habits, we demonstrate that we are ready to begin again.  Rabbi Wolbe also revisits the difference between human and Divine forgiveness. Human forgiveness often resembles an erasable pen: the words fade, but the mark remains. Hashem’s forgiveness resembles a pencil erased completely. Once forgiveness is granted, the old wrongdoing is not kept in a file to be used against us later. Yom Kippur offers a genuine clean slate and the opportunity to present ourselves as changed people. Finally, the parable of the diamonds and coconuts challenges us to distinguish between what is temporarily valuable in this world and what possesses eternal value. Money, possessions, and status may be useful here, but mitzvahs, character, closeness to Hashem, and fulfilling our unique purpose are the “diamonds” we were sent to collect. Elul is not meant to frighten us; it is an energizing forty-day invitation to awaken, take the first step, and become the person we know we can be.  This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinThis Episode is dedicated in Honor of Steve & Sandra FinkelmanRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on October, 2020, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 30, 2022 Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! In Day 193 of The Ways of the Righteous (Orchot Tzaddikim), in the Gate of Fear of Heaven, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring the remarkable ways human beings reflect, on a limited scale, qualities Hashem placed into creation. Just as Hashem distinguishes between good and evil, human beings possess the capacity to discern between them. And just as Hashem created and formed the world, mankind has been endowed with extraordinary creative abilities—to build, plant, develop, transform, and accomplish. But human potential does not mean effortless success. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that there are no shortcuts. Greatness requires hard work, Torah study, understanding the ways of Hashem, and ultimately Hashem's assistance. The extraordinary capacities placed within us are possibilities that must be cultivated. The lesson also draws a fascinating parallel between Hashem and the neshamah: neither can be perceived with our physical eyes. We cannot see a soul entering the body at birth or departing at death, yet its reality defines human life. Similarly, the inner thoughts of another person remain hidden from us, while Hashem knows what lies within every heart.Rabbi Wolbe then explains the purpose of the Yetzer Tov and Yetzer Hara. Human beings were deliberately placed into a world of competing impulses so that our choices would have meaning. Our capacity to build or destroy, plant or uproot, accumulate or relinquish, exercise power or restraint creates the arena in which free will operates. The challenge is not to live without an evil inclination, but to strengthen the Yetzer Tov sufficiently to govern it.The lesson concludes with the essential balance between Divine judgment and Divine mercy. Rabbi Wolbe discusses Rashi's teaching on the opening of the Torah: creation is introduced with the Divine name Elohim, associated with judgment. Yet a world operating through strict judgment alone could not endure. Human beings need the possibility of making mistakes, repenting, growing, and trying again. Hashem therefore allows mercy to accompany judgment. Our greatness is found precisely within this system. We possess tremendous potential, but we also possess competing desires and the ability to fail. The person who repeatedly chooses the Yetzer Tov over the Yetzer Hara transforms that struggle into spiritual greatness. Such a person, Rabbi Wolbe concludes, is truly fortunate—and fortunate is the mother who brought such a person into the world. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe addresses a fundamental question about repentance: Can someone knowingly continue doing wrong, arrive on Yom Kippur, ask for forgiveness, and expect Hashem to accept the apology? Human beings can observe expressions and behavior, but we cannot see another person’s thoughts or intentions. Hashem can. We may fool other people—and sometimes even ourselves—but we cannot fool the One who sees directly into the heart.Hashem desires the heart, but sincere intentions do not eliminate the importance of proper action. Mitzvahs and established prayers provide the channels through which we build our relationship with Hashem. At the same time, perfect pronunciation and outward conformity are not substitutes for genuine feeling. The story of the simple peasant who crowed like a rooster on Yom Kippur demonstrates that an unpolished cry from the heart may be more precious than beautifully recited prayers lacking genuine connection.Elul is therefore a time to turn prayer from routine into relationship. Rabbi Wolbe encourages listeners to speak to Hashem throughout the day—in their own words, while making coffee, before eating, and during ordinary moments. Rather than attempting a complete spiritual transformation overnight, begin with one sincere “Thank You, Hashem.” Day by day, these simple conversations can prepare the heart for a meaningful Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and an extraordinary new year. In Day 192 of The Ways of the Righteous (Orchot Tzaddikim), in the Gate of Fear of Heaven, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary greatness and potential Hashem placed within every human being. Humanity is unique among creation because we possess a neshamah capable of attaining wisdom, penetrating profound ideas, and recognizing both the physical world and the spiritual reality behind it.Rabbi Wolbe compares the Torah to life's owner's manual. A table, computer, or even a door comes with instructions explaining how it should be assembled and used. Life is infinitely more complicated, so Hashem gave us His instructions as well. The Torah teaches us how to approach marriage, raise children, develop ourselves, and understand the purpose for which we were created. If we want to know how to maximize life, we need to study the manual provided by its Creator. The lesson compares our relationship with Hashem to a king who brings trusted servants into his innermost chambers, reveals his treasures and secrets, and entrusts them with tremendous responsibility. The very fact that the king shares so much with them demonstrates how highly he regards them. Similarly, Hashem allows humanity to discover the extraordinary wisdom embedded throughout creation and gives us dominion over the physical world. This should awaken us to both our greatness and our responsibility.Rabbi Wolbe then offers a fascinating explanation for humanity's seemingly endless ambition. Our sages teach that one who has one hundred wants two hundred, and one who has two hundred wants four hundred. The soul originates from a lofty spiritual realm and naturally yearns to rise higher. But when that tremendous drive becomes redirected through the physical body, the desire for spiritual greatness can become a pursuit of bigger houses, greater wealth, higher positions, nicer possessions, and more honor. The goal, therefore, isn't to eliminate our drive for greatness—it is to redirect it upward. The closer we become to Hashem through Torah and mitzvot, the more we uncover the enormous spiritual potential already within us. Rabbi Wolbe concludes that human beings are capable of far more than we imagine. By fulfilling Hashem's will, we become increasingly connected to Him and can transform the soul's endless desire for "more" into an endless pursuit of wisdom, holiness, and closeness to God. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe contrasts the limited way human beings often forgive with the boundless mercy of Hashem. When someone repeatedly wrongs us—even after apologizing—we eventually become suspicious, lose patience, and refuse to forgive again. Yet year after year, we return to Hashem on Yom Kippur admitting many of the same mistakes and asking once more for forgiveness. The difference is illustrated through a pen and a pencil. Human forgiveness can resemble an erasable pen: the words may become lighter, but the imprint remains. Hashem’s forgiveness resembles a pencil erased completely. When Hashem forgives, the wrongdoing is not left behind as a faded mark waiting to be retrieved from an old file. It is erased, opening a genuinely clean slate. The key is sincerity. Even one authentic moment of remorse—recognizing that we acted beneath our potential and genuinely wishing we had chosen differently—can open the door to forgiveness. Hashem’s mercy allows us to return, begin again, and enter the coming year without being permanently defined by the mistakes of the past. In Chodesh Elul, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe reflects on Moshe’s ascent of Mount Sinai and his plea for forgiveness after the sin of the Golden Calf. Rather than demanding guarantees or questioning the Jewish people’s record, Hashem responds to Moshe’s request with forgiveness. The lesson is simple but profound: our responsibility is to ask. In prayer, as in life, when we never ask, we greatly reduce the possibility of receiving.Children naturally understand this. They ask repeatedly, confidently, and without concluding that a delayed answer means they are unloved. Rabbi Wolbe illustrates this through the humorous story of his daughter repeatedly requesting coloring pages. When told to wait, she changes tactics, asks for a “hug-it-out candy,” embraces her father—and immediately returns to her original request. Her persistence reflects the trust of a child who knows that her father loves her and wants to give to her.Elul invites us to bring that same childlike trust into our relationship with Hashem. We should not pray once, hear “not now,” and give up. We return and say, “Hashem, I need help.” We strengthen the relationship through mitzvahs, continue asking, and trust that Hashem never tires of hearing from His children. Persistent prayer is not a lack of faith; it is an expression of closeness, dependence, and confidence in Hashem’s love. Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe compares spiritual growth to beginning a diet: the most common promise is, “I’ll start tomorrow,” but lasting change can only begin today. Tomorrow always appears easier in our imagination, yet today is the tomorrow we spoke about yesterday. Elul challenges us to stop postponing growth, take out a piece of paper, and identify what we want to change before the coming year. But transformation begins even before action—it begins with the desire to change. Rabbi Wolbe shares the story of a man who complained to his Rebbe that he had a heart of stone. Only when the man began pleading and crying for the ability to feel did the Rebbe respond, “Now we’re talking.” The longing for a sensitive heart, meaningful prayer, and a genuine relationship with Hashem is itself the first step toward achieving those things. We therefore begin the Amidah by asking Hashem to open our lips, even though we are already standing in prayer. We are not merely asking for the ability to recite words; we are asking for help to pray with sincerity and connection. Spiritual growth is a partnership: we must begin, persevere when our efforts fail, and continually ask Hashem for inspiration, guidance, and closeness. Elul is the moment to declare: It will not happen someday. It begins today. On the first day of Elul, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that meaningful renewal does not happen automatically. Rosh Hashanah may be the day on which we become a “new creation,” but a beautiful new beginning requires preparation—just as an elegant meal requires planning, shopping, cooking, arranging, and setting the table. We cannot simply arrive on Rosh Hashanah and expect transformation. Elul is the time to think, strategize, and decide what we want to accomplish in the coming year.On Rosh Hashanah, every person passes before Hashem individually, like sheep being counted one at a time. Rabbi Wolbe illustrates this judgment through the image of an investor evaluating a business. Hashem continually invests in us, giving us life, health, intelligence, abilities, and countless daily blessings. The question is whether we are producing a meaningful return from that investment—or merely returning each year with another list of excuses and promises.Yet Hashem’s extraordinary love means that He remains willing to invest in us again. Our responsibility is to become worthy and willing recipients of that kindness. Rabbi Wolbe challenges listeners to begin today: take out a piece of paper, identify what you intend to produce spiritually in the coming year, and start working toward it during Elul. In this opening episode on Elul, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe presents Rosh Chodesh as a recurring opportunity for renewal. Just as Rosh Hashanah invites us to examine the year ahead, every new month—and even every new day—offers a chance to pause, evaluate our direction, and begin again. Elul, the final month before Rosh Hashanah, is especially dedicated to honest introspection: identifying our strengths, confronting our weaknesses, and asking, “What is my purpose, and how am I going to change?” Drawing on the teaching of HaMelech baSadeh—the King is in the field, Rabbi Wolbe describes Elul as a period of spiritual amnesty. Hashem is close, accessible, and ready to welcome every sincere effort to repair the relationship. The daily shofar serves as a spiritual alarm, recalling Moshe’s ascent of Mount Sinai on Rosh Chodesh Elul and awakening us to the seriousness—and extraordinary possibility—of these forty days leading to Yom Kippur. The goal is not an unrealistic overnight transformation. Real growth happens through discipline, consistency, and small, deliberate steps. By using Elul to make one meaningful commitment, a person can arrive at Rosh Hashanah able to say: “I am changing. I am becoming a different person.” Elul therefore becomes a journey from tragedy to opportunity, from spiritual sleep to awakening, and from distance to renewed closeness with Hashem. In Day 191 of The Ways of the Righteous (Gate of Fear of Heaven), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that while human beings are given dominion over creation, that authority carries responsibility. Animals were created to serve mankind—not because they are unimportant, but because humanity possesses something infinitely greater: an eternal soul. We are commanded to treat animals with compassion and even feed them before ourselves, yet our unique role is to elevate creation through our relationship with Hashem.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes the extraordinary greatness of the neshamah. Before birth, the soul exists in a realm of perfect spiritual clarity, but at birth it becomes enclosed within a physical body. The crying of a newborn symbolizes the soul's transition from unlimited closeness to Hashem into a world of confusion and physical limitations. Throughout life, the soul longs to return to that closeness, while the body constantly seeks physical gratification. Our task is to allow the soul—not the body—to direct our choices.Using the metaphor of a rider and a horse, Rabbi Wolbe teaches that the neshamah must hold the reins while the body serves merely as its vehicle. The body is necessary to perform mitzvot and acts of kindness, but it must remain subordinate to the soul's higher purpose. When the soul guides the body, every physical action becomes elevated into something eternal. The lesson also explores why Judaism teaches the future resurrection of the dead. Both the soul and the body contribute to a life of righteousness: the soul inspires holiness, while the body performs the mitzvot. Therefore, both ultimately share in the eternal reward when they are reunited in the World to Come. Finally, Rabbi Wolbe explains that the vast universe—the sun, moon, stars, and all of creation—exists not for the temporary body but for the eternal soul. Every aspect of creation is designed to inspire us to recognize Hashem's greatness and draw closer to Him. The purpose of enjoying this world is not indulgence but elevation: to use every blessing Hashem gives us as a means of strengthening our relationship with Him. In Day 190 of The Ways of the Righteous (Gate of Fear of Heaven), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring the three dimensions of the human soul: the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah. While animals possess the drives of the nefesh and ruach, only human beings are endowed with the neshamah—the uniquely Divine intellect that enables us to discern truth from falsehood, develop wisdom, and elevate ourselves spiritually. Unlike the physical body, the wisdom acquired by the neshamah accompanies a person beyond this world. The central message of the lesson is that our lives are shaped by whichever part of ourselves we choose to nourish. Rabbi Wolbe compares the neshamah to a vacuum cleaner that is constantly searching to be filled. If we fail to satisfy it with holiness, Torah, mitzvot, and acts of kindness, it will desperately seek fulfillment elsewhere through material pursuits that can never truly satisfy. Wealth, pleasure, fame, and possessions may entertain the body, but only closeness to Hashem nourishes the soul.Rabbi Wolbe also explains that although the neshamah originates in the intellect, its goal is to transform the heart. The heart is the source of both positive and negative inclinations, and every person chooses which side to strengthen. By allowing the mind and the neshamah to guide the heart, a person redirects powerful emotions and desires toward holiness rather than selfish gratification. The same passion that can drive destructive behavior can also become the engine for tremendous righteousness. Finally, the lesson teaches that wisdom is the key to understanding both the physical and spiritual worlds. Torah enables a person to distinguish between what merely appears attractive and what genuinely brings eternal value. Every advancement, talent, and technology can be used either for holiness or for destruction. The responsibility lies with us to allow our neshamah to lead our choices so that, when we ultimately stand before Hashem, we can answer that we invested our lives in what truly mattered. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Shoftim, the fifth portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, which outlines the establishment of a just society through judges, officers, and the pursuit of righteousness. Rabbi Wolbe begins with Deuteronomy 16:18-20, emphasizing the command to appoint judges and officers at all gates to ensure fair judgment, and the iconic verse “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof” (“Justice, justice you shall pursue”), highlighting the need for integrity free from bribery, which can corrupt even the wise and just. He connects the prohibition against planting a tree for idol worship near God’s altar (Deuteronomy 16:21) to the sin of arrogance, which God despises most, as it elevates oneself above others and distorts one’s role as a servant in God’s world. Rabbi Wolbe explains that a king must carry a Torah scroll to remain humble, a reminder for the Jewish people as the chosen nation to uphold higher standards of honesty and responsibility, not arrogance. He shares a story about Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, who, for 14 years, returned Social Security checks sent erroneously due to a mistaken birth date, exemplifying the integrity expected of God’s chosen people. Another story recounts a Russian couple who, unable to access a mikvah, abstained from intimacy for years to adhere to Torah laws, demonstrating profound commitment.Rabbi Wolbe urges listeners to appoint “judges and officers” in their personal lives by seeking mentors or friends to provide honest feedback, as illustrated by a story of a friend, Dan Coleman, who initially resented a rabbi’s interrogation but later valued it as preparation for divine judgment. He emphasizes the importance of self-reflection—looking in the mirror to confront one’s flaws—and seeking external perspectives to overcome personal blind spots, especially during Elul’s introspective period. Rabbi Wolbe concludes by encouraging listeners to embrace vulnerability, accept constructive criticism, and pursue personal growth to align with divine justice, wishing all a meaningful Shabbos. In this lesson from the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the deeper structure of the human soul through the concepts of nefesh, ruach, and neshamah. Drawing from the teachings of Orchot Tzaddikim, he explains that the nefesh is associated with physical desire, the ruach with emotion, honor, and ego, and the neshamah with the intellect and our highest spiritual aspirations. These three forces operate simultaneously within every person, creating the lifelong struggle between immediate physical gratification and the soul’s desire for closeness to Hashem.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that reality extends far beyond what our physical eyes can perceive. Spiritual causes and consequences may exist even when they are hidden from us. Through a story involving a businessman who sought guidance from a Kabbalistic sage, he illustrates the Torah perspective that our spiritual choices can influence aspects of life in ways that are not visible on the surface. The broader lesson is that Judaism asks us to look beyond the purely material world and recognize that our actions affect both the physical and spiritual dimensions of existence. The lesson then focuses on the central battle between intellect and emotion. The heart may crave what feels pleasurable in the moment, even when the mind knows that the choice is harmful. Rabbi Wolbe uses the example of someone warned by a doctor to avoid unhealthy food who nevertheless places himself in a tempting environment and gradually rationalizes giving in. Spiritual maturity requires training the mind to govern the heart rather than allowing emotions and impulses to dictate our choices.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by describing life as an ongoing contest between the physical forces that pursue pleasure, wealth, honor, and comfort and the neshamah that continually asks a deeper question: What will bring me closer to Hashem? Whichever side we strengthen becomes more powerful. When physical desires dominate, spiritual sensitivity weakens. When the neshamah leads, humility, wisdom, and closeness to God flourish. The struggle itself is the purpose of life—and every choice gives us another opportunity to allow the highest part of ourselves to lead. In this lesson from the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the powerful parable of the royal soul. The human neshamah is compared to the daughter of a king—pure, precious, and lofty—yet placed inside a physical body filled with earthly desires. The body wants comfort, food, pleasure, materialism, and immediate gratification, while the soul longs for holiness and closeness to Hashem. This tension between body and soul is not a defect in creation; it is the very arena in which human greatness is achieved.Rabbi Wolbe explains that our mission is not to reject the physical world, but to elevate it. Physical experiences can become extraordinarily holy when directed properly. He illustrates this through marriage and intimacy: what the outside world may treat as merely physical can, within the sanctity of a Jewish marriage, become one of the holiest expressions of Divine service. Torah awakens the soul to remember its royalty and teaches us not to “sell ourselves cheaply” by living beneath our spiritual dignity. The lesson then turns to the unique privilege and responsibility of the Jewish people. Hashem gave us Torah and mitzvos as the means through which we recognize His greatness, develop Yirat Shamayim, and draw closer to Him. Looking at the heavens, the earth, the sun, moon, and stars can awaken awareness of the Creator—but Torah gives that awareness clarity and direction. Through learning and mitzvah observance, we begin to understand not only that Hashem exists, but what He wants from us.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by describing Yirat Shamayim as Hashem’s greatest treasure. Gold, silver, possessions, and worldly success cannot compare to the clarity of knowing our relationship with God. The more we invest in Torah, mitzvos, and Hashem’s wisdom, the more we awaken the royal soul within and recognize how privileged we are to live in a personal relationship with the Creator. In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into Parshas Re’eh, the fourth portion in the Book of Deuteronomy, emphasizing its profound inspiration and guidance for living as God’s chosen people. Focusing on Deuteronomy 13:5, Rabbi Wolbe highlights the verse’s commands to follow Hashem, fear Him, observe His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. Quoting Rashi, he explains that “clinging to Hashem” means emulating His ways through acts of loving-kindness, such as visiting the sick (Bikur Cholim), burying the deceased, and comforting mourners, as God did for Abraham and Moses. Rabbi Wolbe stresses that these acts must be performed with the same heartfelt sensitivity and dignity as God’s actions, not for personal gain but out of reverence for Hashem. He shares a story of a rabbi refusing a Bikur Cholim visit, noting that true visitation involves genuine care for the individual’s needs, not just fulfilling a mitzvah.Rabbi Wolbe also recounts personal experiences benefiting from Satmar Bikur Cholim’s remarkable support in hospitals like Good Samaritan, Hackensack, and Montefiore, where they provide food, accommodations, and even emotional care, such as gifting a wig to a mother in distress. A guest, Mr. Schwartz from Satmar Bikur Cholim, joins to describe their 75-year commitment to serving 18 hospitals daily with a $3.5 million budget funded by donations, never turning anyone away regardless of background. He shares how their services, including kosher kitchens and Shabbos accommodations, ease the burdens of patients and families, and appeals for support during the Elul campaign. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that emulating God goes beyond actions to include the manner—loving, thoughtful, and selfless—as seen when God waited for Abraham to serve passersby, prioritizing human kindness (Ben Adam L’Chavero) before divine service (Ben Adam L’Makom). He concludes by urging listeners to perform mitzvot with divine sensitivity and to support Bikur Cholim, wishing all a Shabbos filled with meaningful connection to Hashem. In this lesson from the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that while the highest form of serving Hashem is motivated purely by love and reverence, the Torah recognizes that people often begin with simpler motivations. Children—and even adults who are spiritually immature—are naturally driven by rewards and consequences. Therefore, the Torah itself promises blessings for obedience and warns of punishment for disobedience. These incentives are not the ultimate goal but educational tools that gradually lead a person toward serving Hashem for His sake alone. Eventually, "mitoch shelo lishmah ba lishmah"—doing the right thing for imperfect reasons can develop into doing it for the right reasons.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that spiritual growth mirrors human development. Just as a young child can be motivated by candy far more than by promises of future wealth or royalty, people initially respond to what they immediately understand and value. As wisdom matures, motivations mature as well. A person should never remain spiritually childish but should strive to seek truth simply because it is true and to fulfill Hashem's will because it is Hashem's will. The centerpiece of the lesson is the moving parable of the kidnapped prince. A young prince is stolen from the royal palace and raised in a simple village, completely unaware of his noble identity. Only after someone reveals his true lineage does he begin to appreciate who he really is. When royal messengers finally arrive with the king's garments and escort him back to the palace, his identity is fully awakened. Rabbi Wolbe explains that this prince represents every Jewish soul. Our neshamah originates beneath Hashem's Heavenly Throne, yet it is placed into a physical body that easily forgets its true greatness. Torah and mitzvot remind us who we really are and awaken us to our royal spiritual identity. The lesson concludes with a profound reminder: our soul is infinitely greater than our body. The body may be ordinary and earthly, but the soul is a Divine spark breathed into us by Hashem Himself. Developing Yirat Shamayim means living according to that higher identity, remembering our royal origin, and allowing the soul—not the body—to guide our choices. In this opening lesson of the 28th and final gate of Orchot Tzaddikim—the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim)—Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that the Torah's concept of "fear" does not primarily mean terror or anxiety. Rather, yirah means awe, awareness, perspective, and clarity. True fear of Heaven is living with a constant awareness of Hashem's greatness and recognizing our personal relationship with Him. The Torah repeatedly teaches that this awareness is the foundation of Jewish life and the greatest treasure a person can possess.Rabbi Wolbe then demonstrates that Torah is not the ultimate goal—it is the pathway that leads to Yirat Shamayim. Torah study without developing a deeper awareness of Hashem is compared to possessing the keys to the inner rooms of a house while lacking the key to the front door. Likewise, the purpose of receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai was not simply to acquire knowledge, but to establish an everlasting relationship with Hashem. Every mitzvah reconnects us to that covenant and strengthens that bond. The lesson concludes by describing three levels of fear. The lowest level is serving Hashem because of concern for what other people think. A higher level is serving Hashem out of fear of punishment. The highest and purest level is serving Hashem solely because He is Hashem—out of love, awe, gratitude, and a sincere desire to fulfill His will. Rabbi Wolbe closes by encouraging us to recognize the countless gifts Hashem grants us every moment—from the ability to breathe and see to the privilege of living each day—which naturally inspires profound gratitude and authentic Yirat Shamayim.
