Yahrtzeit Yomi #972!! כו אדר Rav Chaim Brim רב אברהם חיים ב״ר מרדכי דוד ברים (1922 - 2002) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rav Chaim Brim’s Niggun Once, when Rav Avraham Chaim Brim arrived at a wedding celebration, the band quickly switched to a tune that was known as one of Rav Chaim’s favorites. All the participants at the simcha welcomed Rav Chaim into the circles of dancing with renewed joy. But Rav Chaim was troubled. As he had entered the wedding hall, he noticed a bochur on the stage who was singing a different niggun, and the Rav’s entry had caused the band to switch tunes, leaving the bochur with no choice but to put down the microphone and join in with the dancing. “Who was the bochur who was singing before I came in?” Rav Chaim began asking people, alarmed at the distress he had caused the young man. He asked and asked, but no one had been paying sufficient attention to recall. Finally, after the wedding was over, Rav Chaim managed to identify the bochur who had been singing, and he approached him, begging forgiveness for the distress he had caused him. The bochur was taken aback. “What could the Rav possibly mean? I wasn’t hurt at all by the Rav’s arrival!” Despite the bochur’s insistence that he had not been hurt, Rav Chaim asked fervently that the bochur forgive him for having deprived him of finishing the song he’d been singing. Yahrtzeit Yomi #971!! כו אדר (ראשון) Frau Sarah Schenirer Mother Of Generations שרה בת ר׳ בצלאל שענירער אשת רב יצחק לאנדא (1883 - 1935) ------------------------------------------- She was a dedicated educational and social activist, an extraordinary teacher and an exceptional writer. Sarah Schenirer, zichronah l’vracha, was one of the most important figures in the history of Jewish education. Schenirer, a seamstress from Kraków, saw the urgent need for a system of formal Jewish education for girls, an innovation that was necessary to stem the tide of the Haskalah movement which lured many Jewish girls away from the ideals of the Torah. The youngest of nine children, Frau Schenirer founded Bais Yaakov in 1918, but not without first overcoming some considerably substantial societal and political obstacles. In his later years, a group of men came to the home of the Chofetz Chaim ZTL to inform him about a new breach in the ramparts of Torah tradition: the Bais Yaakov women’s seminary that had been established in Kraków. They argued that the Torah forbids all such innovations and cited the Gemara (Sotah 20a) as proof to their position. While they were trying to persuade the Chofetz Chaim to condemn the seminary, a second group arrived to ask for his blessing for the same institution. The first group was confident that they had proven conclusively that the existence of such a seminary was strictly forbidden, and they were confident that the elderly sage would denounce the newcomers in no uncertain terms. His response, however, was the exact opposite of what they had expected. “Oy,” he bemoaned, “such a holy undertaking, and I have no part in it?!” With the blessings of great Torah leaders such as the Imrei Emes, the Belzer Rebbe, the Chofetz Chaim and Rav Elchonon Wasserman, Frau Schenirer opened her first Bais Yaakov school in Kraków in 1918 with a class of 25 girls. From these humble beginnings, her school expanded into an educational network that – at the time of her passing – boasted more than 200 schools attended by some 25,000 students all across Eastern and Central Europe!! She was nifteres after a devastating illness at the young age of 52, on a Friday afternoon as she gazed at the Shabbos candles she had just lit. Before the Jewish people received the Torah, Hashem gives Moshe instructions on how to teach His children: כֹּה תֹאמַר לְבֵית יַעֲקֹב וְתַגֵּיד לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל (Shemos 19:3). Aren’t the “House of Yaakov” and the “Children of Yisroel” one and the same? Rashi tells us that in fact the verse refers to two groups within the nation. “Bais Yaakov” refers to the women, while “Bnei Yisroel” refers to the men. Moshe taught the general principles of the Torah to the Jewish women, the “Bais Yaakov”, after which he learned the minutiae of the laws with the men. It is this distinct differentiation that helps us define the unique roles which men and women possess in Jewish life. Yeshaya HaNavi (2:5) says it clearly: בֵּית יַעֲקֹב לְכוּ וְנֵלְכָה בְּאוֹר ה – Bais Yaakov, come let us walk in the light of Hashem. It is the Bais Yaakov, the women, who lead the way for their husbands and children, and maintain the spiritual light of our people. In the words of Frau Sarah Schenirer, “…because it is the Jewish mothers and teachers who raise the next generation, only they can make the children love the Torah; it is they who guarantee the spiritual survival of the Jewish nation and, contrary to popular belief, the expression “Bais Yaakov” does not tell the Jewish woman that her place is at home, but rather that the Jewish woman IS the home. One must remember that in Yiddishkeit, the home is seen as something more than just a shelter for people. It is also the representation of the mishkan in which the Shechinah resides.” [see WhatsApp Chat for more] ----------------------------------- Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!! https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059

Yahrtzeit Yomi #961!! A Time To Build The Gemara in Maseches Taanis 29a teaches us that there are certain dates on the calendar that are specifically designated for misfortune (such as Tisha B’av); and conversely, there are certain dates that are Divinely designated as auspicious days upon which fortunate occurrences will take place - מְגַלְגְּלִין זְכוּת לְיוֹם זַכַּאי, וְחוֹבָה לְיוֹם חַיָּיב The day of 16 Adar (today, Thursday) is certainly one such auspicious occasion; a day that has brought a sense of hope and rejuvenation throughout the ages. Allow me to illustrate: In Megillas Taanis, in the 12th perek, we are told as follows: בשיתא עשר ביה שריו למבנא שור ירושלים דִלָא לְמִסְפָּד מפני שסתרוהו אויבים וכשהתחילו לבנותו אותו היום עשאוהו י"ט “On the 16th (of Adar) they (the Jews) were permitted to (re)build the walls of Yerushalayim; it is therefore forbidden to say a eulogy (on that day).......... and the day that they began reconstruction was designated as a holiday.” The above passage likely refers to the second of the following occurrences, although it could possibly refer to both: On the 16th of Adar, in the year 33a90 from creation (just before the reign of אחשוורוש), King Cyrus of Persia (כורש) granted permission for the building of the second Beis Hamikdash. Exactly 412 years later, on 16 Adar, in the year 3802/42 CE (just 28 years before the destruction of the Second Beis Hamikdash), King Agrippa I, who was pious and kind to his Jewish subjects, ordered that construction to repair, broaden and heighten the chomah (wall) around Yerushalayim, begin. During his reign, the Jews began to prosper and live comfortably. The Sages of the time accorded him great respect. The Romans, wary of the Jews' rising prosperity, placed many obstacles in King Agrippa’s way. Nevertheless, the wall was ultimately completed, (although the finished product was not as magnificent as originally planned). Hence, we see how the 16th of Adar became a fulfillment of the aforementioned statement of ״מְגַלְגְּלִין זְכוּת לְיוֹם זַכַּאי״. But that would not be the last occasion when 16 Adar would be marked as an auspicious time of rebuilding; in an eerie precognition of sorts, the words of the Megillas Taanis would once again be realized, albeit in the very distant future, and a different part of the globe: [See WhatsApp chat for full content ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #952!! ט אדר Rav Zalman Volozhiner רב שלמה זלמן ב״ר יצחק (1756 - 1788) --------------------------------- Today (Sunday, 9 Adar) marks the 236th Yahrtzeit of Rav Shlomo Zalman Volozhiner ZTL, fondly referred to as “Reb Zelmeleh”. Reb Zelmeleh (henceforth: Reb Zalman) was the younger brother of the renowned Rav Chaim Volozhiner, and was considered to be the foremost Talmid of the Vilna Gaon, and for good reason: From the time he was a very young child, Reb Zalman’s unparalleled greatness in Torah scholarship was simply unfathomable. His mind was like a computer from which he could extract abstruse information at a moment’s notice. There are dozens of stories that illustrate Rav Zalman’s complete mastery over the vast sea of the Torah, as well as his ability to demonstrate, even in the midst of a seemingly mundane conversation, through the use of just the right phrase or dictum, that there is no wisdom or body of knowledge that is not in some way at least alluded to (if not openly addressed) in our holy Torah; the immutable principle of הֲפֹךְ בָּהּ וַהֲפֹךְ בָּהּ, דְּכֹלָּא בָהּ - “delve into the Torah thoroughly, and you’ll find that everything is contained therein”. The full extent of Reb Zalman’s incredible fluency in the entire Torah was described by no less a personage than his own older brother Rav Chaim, a towering Torah giant in his own right. Rav Chaim explained that Reb Zalman was as familiar with the voluminous gamut of the entire Torah literature, as we are with the thrice-daily-recited ״אשרי״ prayer! What’s particularly inspiring about Reb Zalman was that his peerless encyclopedic knowledge was primarily utilized to ensure that everything he did was in meticulous accordance with the dictates of Halacha and Chazal; common custom notwithstanding. In situations where others were quick to dismiss a particular Halacha or Mitzvah with the claim of “well, nowadays this does not apply”, Reb Zalman would practice uncompromising loyalty to the Torah’s mandates. Despite his phenomenal memory and vast knowledge, Rav Zalman never ceased reviewing Torah. Someone once witnessed Reb Zalman striding back-and-forth, reviewing a particular topic with tremendous enthusiasm. “How many times have you reviewed this topic?” he asked Reb Zalman. “About two hundred and fifty times,” was the reply. (Ohhhh boy. Here we go. I know exactly where this is heading. It’s the age-old raging “Artscroll Biographies vs. Making of a Gadol” debate. I can already hear/read all the feedback....:) “Shkoiyach, Ezi (said facetiously). You have now told us that there was a born genius, who was also an unmatched masmid. How does that relate to us??! You’re just making greatness seem unattainable!!” “Ezi, your Yahrtzeit article this week was pointless. Your article, together with all those whitewashed Artscroll biographies......” “Ezi, with all (actually, zero) due respect, your article was not only uninspiring and discouraging, but it is also a tremendous distortion. Instead of presenting our Gedolim as flawless angelic beings, maybe tell us about their human struggles and challenges which they undoubtedly encountered??! After all is said and done, they were human beings. We need human role models to emulate, not the flawless cherubim which you present them to be.” Ok, fine. So allow me to present to you the type of struggle which Reb Zalman faced regularly: [Remainder on WhatsApp group] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #949!! ו אדר Rav Dovid Povarsky רב יהושע דוד ב״ר שלום ראש ישיבת פוניבז׳ (1902 - 1999) Special 25th Yahrtzeit Edition!! ---------------------------------------------- Today, Thursday, 6 Adar, marks the 25th Yahrtzeit of Rav (Yehoshua) Dovid Povarsky ZTL, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. In his youth, Rav Dovid was a close talmid of Rav Aaron Kotler ZTL in the Slutzk Yeshiva, and later joined the Mirrer Yeshiva where he developed his lifelong connection to the Mashgiach, Rav Yerucham Levovitz ZTL. After World War I, he married and moved to Baranovitch where he became a chavrusa of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Elchonon Wasserman ZTL. Rav Dovid’s reputation spread, and he received an invitation to join the staff of the noted Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, which he ultimately declined, preferring instead to continue learning and teaching in Baranovitch. For more than half a century, Rav Dovid served as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Ponovezh in Bnei Brak, where he taught and guided thousands of worthy disciples, who staunchly continue the legacy of the venerated Rosh Yeshiva until today. For several decades, Rav Dovid’s daily routine was to awaken at 3 AM, and to walk from his home in Bnei Brak to the nearby Ponovezh Yeshiva, where he would learn Torah until Shacharis. Nothing would impede him from this regimen; neither inclement weather, nor declining health. Like a disciplined soldier in the royal guard, Rav Dovid maintained his post, studying assiduously for a four-hour, uninterrupted stretch, come what may. In his later years, after he had slipped and fallen twice, his family, concerned for his safety, arranged for two of his closest Talmidim to escort him daily. Once, during a very stormy, windy night, while walking to the Yeshiva, Rav Dovid remarked to his escorts: “Heint der Alter hut mir gekummen mevaker tzu zayn (The Alter came to visit me today)”. (The Talmidim instinctively assumed that one of the great Mashgiachim from the Lithuanian Yeshivos must have appeared to Rav Dovid in a dream.) “Fuhn Kelm? Udder fuhn Slabodka? (Was it the Alter of Kelm? Or the Alter of Slabodka?)”, one of the escorts asked. “Nayn, nayn” corrected Rav Dovid, “nit fuhn der sort Alter (not that type of Alter)”. “‘Der Alter’ who visited me this morning was much older than both of those”, remarked Rav Dovid with a slight smile. “This ‘Alter’, although referred to by our sages as an ‘old stupid king’, can actually be quite cunning.” The talmidim henceforth understood that the “Alter” to which the Rosh Yeshiva was referring, was to none other than the Yetzer Hara himself!! Realizing that there was much to learn from this seemingly casual exchange, one of the Talmidim asked, “What did the Yetzer Hara think he could accomplish by visiting the Rosh Yeshiva in the predawn hours? Couldn’t he have found a more suitable acquaintance to visit with??” “Lummer dir eppis masbir zayn - let me explain,” said the Rosh Yeshiva. “Today, the Yetzer Hara suggested that I stay in bed for just an additional five minutes, based on an extremely logical premise: the entire world is now enjoying a sound, uninterrupted sleep. Wouldn’t it be appropriate to heed the dictum of Chazal: ׳אל תפרוש מן הציבור׳ - ‘Never detach yourself from the congregation’? He even reasoned that it would be improper to rise from bed, as that would constitute a violation of the aforementioned teaching of Chazal!! Yahrtzeit Yomi #943!! א אדר ראשון (Shabbos) The Shach רב שבתי ב״ר מאיר הכהן כ״ץ שפתי כהן (1622 - 1663) ----------------------------------------------------- Ah Gutten Choidesh Rabboisai!! Just a short explanation of the system we will be using for the coming joyous months of Adar: There are varied customs concerning observing a Yahrtzeit of Chodesh Adar in a leap year. In this platform (Yahrtzeit Yomi), the Yahrtzeits of those tzaddikim who were niftar in Adar Rishon (of a leap year) will be commemorated in Adar Rishon, and the Yahrtzeits of those tzaddikim who were niftar in Adar Sheini (of a leap year) will be commemorated in Adar Sheini. The Yahrtzeits of those tzaddikim who were niftar in Adar of a non-leap year will be indiscriminately divided between Adar Rishon and Adar Sheini. If a featured Tzaddik passed away in a leap year during Adar Rishon, such will be indicated in the title; as the following example illustrates: Yahrtzeit Yomi #213!! א אדר ראשון The Shach רב שבתי ב״ר מאיר הכהן כ״ץ שפתי כהן (1622 - 1663) Likewise for Adar Sheini; If a featured Tzaddik passed away in a leap year during Adar Sheini, such will be indicated in the title; as the following example illustrates: Yahrtzeit Yomi #255!! יג אדר שני Rav Moshe Feinstein רב משה ב״ר דוד פיינשטיין אגרות משה (1895 - 1986) Naturally, if a featured Tzaddik passed away in Adar of a non-leap year, such will be reflected in the title, as the month stated will be just אדר (regardless of whether the Yahrtzeit will be featured during Adar Rishon or Adar Sheini). חדש אדר שמח!!! -------------------------------------------------- To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #938!! כה שבט Rav Yisroel Salanter הרב ישראל ב״ר זאב וואלף ליפקין (1809 - 1883) ------------------------------ Today’s edition of Yahrtzeit Yomi featuring HaRav Yisroel Salanter ZTL has been anonymously dedicated in honor of Rabbi Wartelsky Shlita and his daily Yahrtzeit Yomi broadcast, for inspiring me and the lives of so many in Klal Yisroel!! (Thank you so very much, you-know-who!!) ---------------------------------------------------------- Today (Sunday, 25 Shvat) marks the 141st Yahrtzeit of Rav Yisroel Salanter ZTL (Rav Yisroel Lipkin), founder and leader of the Mussar renaissance. Rav Yisroel would champion and promulgate the principle that the inter-personal laws of the Torah (בין אדם לחבירו) bear as much weight as those obligations which are strictly Divine (בין אדם למקום). Rav Yisroel would teach that adhering to the ritual aspects of Judaism without developing one's relationships with others and with oneself, is an error of extreme magnitude. Additionally, the innovative concept of “subconscious motivation” appears in Rav Yisroel’s writings, already in the mid-1800s (well before a toddler named Sigmund Freud from Austria imagined that his baby bottle was nothing other than a living deputy for his mother, and his toy rattle an anthropomorphic embodiment of his noisy older sister). Rav Yisroel wrote that it is critical for a person to identify what his subconscious motivations (known as “negios”) are, and to work on understanding their roots. Our Rebbi, The Blurigeh Rav Shlita, has been promulgating the teachings and ideals of Rav Yisroel to hundreds of talmidim for over 2 decades, unabated. Rav Yisroel provides an absolutely stunning explanation to a difficult question, which showcases his profound understanding of the human condition, while also demonstrating his signature philosophy that the Torah is replete with endless insight into human nature, thereby providing a lifetime’s worth of opportunity for character refinement: In Parashas Shoftim (דברים יט:טז-יט), the Torah presents the issue of עדים זוממין - false witnesses. If a pair of witnesses bear false testimony on another individual, the Torah prescribes that the very same penalty which the witnesses conspired to have imposed on their intended victim should be imposed on the witnesses themselves: “וַעֲשִׂ֣יתֶם ל֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר זָמַ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לְאָחִ֑יו” - “And you shall do to him as he schemed to do to his fellow”. So, witnesses that had testified falsely are punished with the same consequence which they had attempted to inflict on their intended victim: if they had schemed to cause a man to be killed, they get killed; if they schemed for a man to get whipped, they get whipped; and if they schemed for a man to pay money, they pay money. In the latter case, Halacha dictates that the money that the false witnesses pay, they must pay to their intended victim. The question has been asked (עיין ספר יראים, סימן קעח): Why do the witnesses pay their victim?? What is the source that the victim is entitled to payment?? This is not a consolation prize for the defendant, it’s a penalty imposed on the lying witnesses!!? Why should it be any different from the penalty of getting killed or whipped, from which the intended victim has no benefit?? Perhaps the witnesses should pay directly to Beis Din, but why should they pay the victim?? (This issue was discussed, and an answer was provided, in a previous Yahrtzeit Yomi edition; on 7 Shvat, YY #918, עיין שם.) SAYS RAV YISROEL SALANTER, CLASSIC!! (Rabboisai, check this out; it was worthwhile to be born just to learn this priceless understanding of Rav Yisroel): The Torah says וַעֲשִׂ֣יתֶם ל֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר זָמַ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לְאָחִ֑יו - you shall do to him as he schemed to do to his fellow. Well, says Rav Yisroel... Yahrtzeit Yomi #933!! יט שבט Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twersky רב אברהם יהושע העשיל ב״ר יעקב ישראל (1931 - 2021) ------------------------------------------------------ Rav Avraham Yehoshua Heshel ben R' Yaakov Yisroel Twerski ZT”L In his tzavaah, Rabbi Twerski wrote that there should be no hespedim – an item he emphasized by circling five times – but, per another request in his tzavaah, as mourners carried the mittah to kevurah, they sang his famous song, “Hoshia Es Amecha,” which Rabbi Twerski had composed in honor of the weddings of his twin brothers, Rabbis Michel and Aaron, who got married several weeks apart in 1960. Rabbi Twerski once told his nephew Labe the reasoning behind this seemingly strange request to have the song sung at his levayah: “I know that this song brought simcha to many Yidden, and I hope that it will be a zechus for me in Shamayim.” יהי זכרו ברוך!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #932!! יט שבט Rav Yisroel Belsky הרב חיים ישראל ב״ר דוב ראש ישיבה תורה ודעת (1938 - 2016) Presented by Rav Avrohom Zelig Krohn Shlita!!! ------------------------------------------- Shalom Uvracha Rabboisai!! On the occasion of the 8th Yahrtzeit of Rav Yisroel Belsky ZTL we have the inestimable zechus to hear Divrei Torah from Mori v’Rebbi Rav Avrohom Krohn Shlita, renowned Maggid Shiur in Waterbury Connecticut!! In his younger years, Rav Krohn Shlita enjoyed a close connection to Rav Belsky ZTL, having spent several summers in Camp Agudah under the Rosh Yeshiva ZTL’s tutelage. In a mere 4 minutes, and using Rav Belsky’s own Divrei Torah, Rav Krohn masterfully and succinctly encapsulates the ideals by which the Rosh Yeshiva lived his life. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Rav Krohn Shlita for taking the time to share his timeless message with us, and we wish the Rav many more happy, healthy and successful years of being marbitz Torah and inspiring Klal Yisrael to ever greater heights!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. On 18 Shevat 3 years ago, Klal Yisroel suffered the loss of 2 towering Torah giants on the same day: Rav Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik ZTL, and Rav Yitzchok Sheiner ZTL. On the occasion of their first Yahrtzeit, I asked HaRav Eli Winzelberg Shlita, a close Talmid of both venerated Roshei Yeshiva, to share his recollections with us. In the audio clip below, Rav Winzelberg describes the sense of purpose which each of the Roshei Yeshiva ZTL carried throughout their lives, which spurred them on to ever greater heights. Rav Winzelberg, one of the outstanding Talmidei Chachamim of our generation, maintains a humble and pleasant demeanor with everyone he meets. We are most grateful to the Rav for kindly sharing his insightful and wise recollections of the Tzaddikim, to enable us to learn from their elevated and inspiring ways. We wish the Rav continued success in uplifting and inspiring yidden for many long, fruitful and healthy years to come!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059.
