Yahrtzeit Yomi #1520!!כז סיוןRav Dovid Trenkמורי ורבי הרב מנחם יחיאל דוד ב״ר אברהם יהושע העשיל טרענק(1940 - 2019)TAYREH REBBEH!!🥹🥹🥹------------------------------------------My friends, today, 27 Sivan, marks the 6th yahrtzeit of Mori V’Rebbi HaRav Dovid Trenk ZTL. Today’s edition is most meaningful to me personally, as I have had the זכייה to know Rav Trenk zl ever since I was a child, and, more recently, spent 4 summers together with my family as next-door-neighbors to the Trenks. The following text and subsequent pdf document [see WhatsApp group] are of a revised and redacted version of the original tribute which I wrote in memory of our beloved Rebbi, which was published in the Yated Ne’eman on the occasion of his first yahrtzeit, Sivan 5780.יהי זכרו ברוך!!------------------------------------------הוא היה אומרThree Words. THE words that perhaps come closest to defining a man whose greatness is beyond definition. Expressed tearfully by his eldest son at his levaya, the Three-Word-הספד, borrowed from a term used repeatedly in מסכת אבות, is contextually explained to be referring to what a man’s essence, as opposed to his words, would say: הוא היה אומר - his very being, completely and altruistically devoted to nothing other than Divine Service in its purest form, was the sole source of his inestimable impact. Always who he was, not merely what he said. The supremely unique personality of Rav Dovid Trenk ZTL constitutes a study in contrasts. In the opinion of this writer, acquired greatness can be measured only by the means of maintained balance. Even should one profess excellence in a particular trait of fine character, or in an area of meritorious practice, such prowess cannot be independently identified as either divinely gifted or laboriously acquired. It is only when one’s character or personality incorporates such opposite extremes of meritorious behavior, to an extent that would seem paradoxical or even contradictory, that it is infallible proof of self-achievement in character refinement.Hence; in our Rebbi we saw a man who:- Would act (appropriately) silly with a three-year-old girl, even going so far as to loyally follow her instructions as to the proper way to sing her favorite song (“no webbi, not like that; you hafta scweam”, and scream he did), for the sole purpose of delighting and amusing the girl and her parents;and yet also vividly and tearfully describe the horrors suffered by our forebears at the hands of the Nazis, by his annual Tisha B’av introduction to Rav Schwab’s Kinnah, thereby creating the proper atmosphere of solemnity, rousing the hearts of campers and staff alike to prayerful lamentation;- Could always introduce concisely and eloquently, with no preparation, through the means of a poignantly and succinctly stated Torah thought, the appointed speaker by a Shabbos meal, highlighting the unique qualities specific to that speaker;and yet also [...see WhatsApp group for more]------------------------------------------Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!!https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk---------------------------------------------------To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059, or email [email protected]. Yahrtzeit Yomi #1495!!א סיוןYeshiva K’tana of Waterbury Causematch Campaign!!ישיבה קטנה דוואטערבעריFounded 2000https://causematch.com/ykw/eziwyahrtzeityomi--------------------------------------------------------My friends!!Today’s edition of Yahrtzeit Yomi - #1495 - is the first (and probably last) edition which is actually a fundraising campaign rather than a tribute; for one simple reason: all of my precious children have either graduated, or are currently attending, Yeshiva K’tana of Waterbury. YKW has provided, and continues to provide, a sterling chinuch for all of my children throughout their entire childhood. At the onset of the Month of Chinuch, I can’t think of a more appropriate tribute than to the wonderful Moised that is wholeheartedly and devotedly dedicated to the chinuch of the next generation of Klal Yisroel: Yeshiva K’tana of Waterbury.BeH, I will be providing a short tribute and discuss a little bit of the yeshiva’s history for today’s YY edition. My friends, please donate generously to this most worthy institution. May you all be blessed with nachas from your own children, and know only Bracha, Hatzlacha, Gezunt and Parnassa כל ימי חייכם!!תזכו למצוות!!----------------------------------------------------Sivan Yahrtzeits1. It’s really a “Pesach Sugya”, as it relates to our reaction to the neis of Kriyas Yam Suf as well.I strongly encourage everyone to listen to the audio posted above.Additionally, here are some vintage “Q&A” from Rav Avigdor Miller ZTL, who addresses the issue clearly and eloquently as only he could. It’s so clear and illuminating!! Its my favorite Rav Miller Q&A that exists!!(Try to read it if you can, at least a little. If not, you could peruse it after Yom Tov as well.)חג כשר ושמח!!----------------------------------------------------Rav Avigdor On Half-Hallel on PesachBelow are the Q&A’s about “Half-Hallel” as heard from Rav Miller ZTL, as well as the editor’s note attached at the end.(Note that we have transcribed a few Q&A’s on the same topic. Although it is quite lengthy, we felt it was appropriate because each one adds a little more insight.)Q: On the last days of Pesach we say only half-Hallel. Isn’t that because of מעשה ידי טובעים בים ואתם אומרים שירה (Megillah 10b)? Aren’t we sad that Egyptians were drowned and we therefore don’t want to sing to Hashem? A: The answer is no, it’s not because of this; it’s not because of מעשה ידי טובעים בים. There is no gemara that says that this is the reason for not saying Hallel on Pesach. I know that it’s frequently quoted and people think it’s a gemara, but there is no gemara to that effect. And even if you show me a medrash that says it, you’re misinterpreting the medrash. The reason why we say only half-Hallel is because there was a takanah that on the first day of Pesach – for us the first two days – that we have to say Hallel. There is no reason, no takanah, to say Hallel on the other days. The other days it was only a minhag to say Hallel. And therefore, because there was no takanah, they couldn’t say the whole Hallel, so they said half-Hallel. Half-Hallel is only a minhag –  the takanah was only the first day. Now, on Sukkos the takanah was to say Hallel every day, because on Sukkos every day there was a different korban tzibur brought in the Beis Hamikdash. Because every day was something new and special, like its own Yom Tov, so each day was also made special with the whole Hallel. Pesach, however, has the same korban every day and that’s the difference... Yahrtzeit Yomi #1370!!א אדר (Shabbos)The Ibn Ezraרב אברהם ב״ר מאיר אבן עזראאבי הפייטנים(1089 - 1164)----------------------------------------------AH FREILICHEN CHOIDESH ADAR RABBOISAI!!!!🥂🥂🥂🥳🥳🥳🤪🤪🤪Friends, it is noteworthy that the month of Adar is the most yahrtzeit-packed month of the entire year. The natural explanation for this is simply that the month of Adar occurs more frequently than any other month, since there are often two Adars (i.e., in a leap year). On a deeper level, it may be that the month of Adar was ultimately considered meritorious for Klal Yisroel because it contains the yahrtzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu(see Medrash Esther Rabbah 7:11).So perhaps there is an especial divinely ordained merit to tzaddikim’s yahrtzeits occuring in Adar more than any other month. Nu nu, perhaps.Below is the list of Adar Yahrtzeits which we hope to feature, בעזה״י.To sponsor an edition of Yahrtzeit Yomi featuring one (or more) of the following tzaddikim, please reply to this text!!MAY THE ZECHUS OF ALL THE TZADDIKIM PROTECT US FROM ALL TZAROS, AND MAY HASHEM GRANT US, AND ALL OF KLAL YISROEL, A MONTH OF YESHUOS, NECHAMOS AND BESUROS TOVOS!!!א גוט׳ן חודש רבותי!!----------------------------------------------------Adar Yahrtzeits1. Yahrtzeit Yomi #1330!! כז טבת Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch רב שמשון ב״ר רפאל הירש (1808 - 1888) Dvar Torah on פרשת וארא from Rabbiner Hirsch!! ----------------------------------------------------------- The following edition of Yahrtzeit Yomi featuring Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch ZTL is sponsored לזכר נשמת: משה בן החכם רבי חייא ז״ל ממשפחת אריה -------------------------------------------------------------- Shalom u’Vracha Rabboisai!! The text below and the first part of the audio present a classic and timeless message from Rav Hirsch ZTL, which introduces Sefer Shemos. 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 The second part of the audio is a presentation of one of the fundamental ideals which Rav Hirsch had espoused and practiced throughout his fruitful and devoted life. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 ----------------------------------------------------------- Today, 27 Teves, marks the 137th Yahrtzeit of Rav Shamshon Raphael Hirsch ZTL. (1808 - 1888) Our Rebbi, the Blurigeh Rav Shlita, refers to Rav Hirsch as his “Rebbi in Seforim”. Rav Hirsch ZTL has been aptly labeled the “Architect of Torah Judaism for the Modern World”. Espousing the “weltenshuang” of תורה עם דרך ארץ, he fiercely battled the winds of the reform movement, which was sweeping through Western Europe at an alarming rate. He hated haskalah. He was a prolific writer and speaker. He loved the alps. Blah blah blah blah blah blah…. 😴😴😴. (sorry, I fell asleep) Rabboisai, I could spend the precious space I was allotted to describe the incredible accomplishments and impact of Oberrabbiner Hirsch zl, but I don’t see much benefit in doing so (other than to impress you with my casual offhand use of German terms like Verband der orthodoxen Rabbiner Deutschlands, and Freie Vereinigung für die Interessen des Orthodoxen Judentums. Anyways, it sounds much better in the audio than it looks on paper.) (In fact, Rav Hirsch himself seems to have considered the study of history and past events as pointless and a waste of precious time; refer to Collected Writings VII, p. 440: “One must examine whether the study of history and of past events is necessary or even useful for men and nations whose present life is completely taken up with vigorous and active devotion to their duty. Only generations in the state of decline feel they must look back to the past in order to be uplifted by the example of long departed heroes.....” In other words, he would have disapproved of the phenomenally popular Yahrtzeit Yomi broadcast. Oh boy, this is awkward.) 🥴🥴🥴 Instead, Rabboisai, let’s learn an absolutely stunning and timeless piece which Rav Hirsch writes in his comments at the very end of Parshas Shemos, which really sets the stage for the world-altering events of yetzias mitzrayim. The pesukim at the end of parshas shemos record a very cryptic conversation: וַיָּ֧שׇׁב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־ה׳ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר ה׳ לָמָ֤ה הֲרֵעֹ֙תָה֙ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה שְׁלַחְתָּֽנִי: וּמֵאָ֞ז בָּ֤אתִי אֶל־פַּרְעֹה֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר בִּשְׁמֶ֔ךָ הֵרַ֖ע לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה וְהַצֵּ֥ל לֹא־הִצַּ֖לְתָּ אֶת־עַמֶּֽךָ (שמות ה:כב,כג) Moshe Rabbeinu complains to Hashem that his presence in Egypt not only didn’t improve the situation, but actually made things far worse. Hashem replies: וַיֹּ֤אמֶר ה׳ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַתָּ֣ה תִרְאֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה לְפַרְעֹ֑ה וכו׳: “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh” etc. Anyone reading this exchange should be bothered by the simple question: How did Hashem answer Moshe’s question? All Hashem said was “OK, now you’ll see what I will do to Pharaoh”. But why, takeh, did Hashem send Moshe to Pharaoh, if his appearance accomplished nothing, and even made matters worse?? What was the purpose?? Zakt der groiseh Oberrabiner mamish vhunderbar!! (uhn das dahrf mehn leghen in kop arayn!!): That’s exactly the point! עַתָּ֣ה תִרְאֶ֔ה - NOW you will see!! The utter failure of Moshe’s efforts in beseeching Pharoah WAS THE FIRST NECESSARY STEP OF THE REDEMPTION!! [see WhatsApp group for remainder]
