MAY THE ZECHUS OF ALL THE TZADDIKIM PROTECT US FROM ALL TZAROS, AND MAY HASHEM GRANT US, AND ALL OF KLAL YISROEL, YESHUOS, NECHAMOS AND BESUROS TOVOS!!! --------------------------------------------------------- Yahrtzeit Yomi #1326!! Rav Mordechai Gifter Rav of Waterbury CT Today, 23 Teves, marks the 24th Yahrtzeit of Rav Mordechai Gifter ZTL (1915 - 2001). The connection between the Talmidim of Waterbury and Rav Gifter ZTL is as poignant as it is obvious: Rav Gifter was the revered and beloved Rav of the fledgling Waterbury community from 1941 until 1944!! Rather than my own feeble attempt at portraying Rav Gifter’s thoughts as to his years as Rav of the Waterbury Kehilla, I will heretofore transcribe Rav Gifter’s own words (Rav Gifter was renowned for his impeccable eloquence and unique oratory skills). The following is excerpted from remarks which Rav Gifter delivered as the Opening Lecturer of the Community Lecture Series in Cleveland Ohio, in the year 1991, on the topic of “Diversity in Orthodoxy”: “Good evening my friends. When I was asked to speak tonight, on the influence of the Telshe Yeshiva upon the Jewish community, I wasn’t aware of the fact that it was part of a discussion on Diversity in Orthodox Judaism. You see, my friends, I’m not an Orthodox Jew. I’m at Torah Jew! Orthodoxy is strange to me. For years and years, I’ve been saying this over and over again, that this Greek term “or·tho·dox” doesn’t quite well describe what we Torah Jews believe in. And therefore, I will not be engaged in “orthodoxy” tonight, but rather in speaking a bit about Torah Jews..........” (Rav Gifter then shares his own personal feelings regarding his efforts in planting the seeds in the “beginnings of the Waterbury Kehilla”....) “I was in the rabbinate (in Waterbury Connecticut). It was a lucrative rabbinate, and I was able to live as a Torah Jew in the rabbinate (in Waterbury), although my congregants were far from that. But they listened to everything I said, as far as the community was concerned. As individuals, they were far from Torah Jews. And they were even very far from what you would call “Orthodox Jews”! But it was a wonderful kehilla in Waterbury Connecticut!! But when my uncles, the Roshei HaYeshiva, asked me to leave the rabbinate (in Waterbury), and come to (Cleveland) to help build the yeshiva, I said ‘I’m going to do it’. It meant giving up a great deal as far as means of a livelihood, and many other benefits, but it meant building Toireh!! And I didn’t feel that in Waterbury I would be able to begin building Toireh. Even though we had launched the beginnings of a day school, a kindergarten; work which was continued by a wonderful colleague of mine, Rav (Abba Zalka) Gewirtz, zol ehr langeh lebben, who followed me there, who built a complete day school in Waterbury...... “So I left Waterbury, and came here to Cleveland.........” [see WhatsApp group for remainder]

Yahrtzeit Yomi #1276!! א כסלו The Rebbe Recovers (1977) Rosh Chodesh Kislev Niggun Rosh Chodesh Kislev marks the return of the Lubavitcher Rebbe ZTL to public life after suffering a major heart attack just 38 days earlier. During the celebrations of the evening of Simchas Torah in the year 1977 (5738), while dancing with the Torah in the main synagogue, the Rebbe’s face suddenly turned pale. As he sat back in his chair, the chassidim knew that something was very wrong, and the synagogue was quickly cleared. Still, the Rebbe stoically completed the last dance together with his brother-in-law Rabbi Shmaryahu Gurary. Dr. Ira Weiss, who flew in from Chicago to treat the Rebbe, testified that “on a scale of one to ten, he had the full-ten-scale-heart attack……it involved such extensive cardiovascular damage that in anyone’s normal medical experience, one would worry about the possibility of survival.” And then, on the First of Kislev, for the first time in five weeks, the Rebbe left his office in 770 Eastern Parkway and returned to his home, signaling his complete and miraculous recovery. Chassidim all over rejoiced at the good news. Rosh Chodesh Kislev marked the beginning of sixteen additional years of life and leadership for the Rebbe. During this period he revealed ever deeper Torah secrets, and inspired many thousands of people to transform themselves and the world for good. From that day forward, the Rebbe redoubled his efforts on behalf of the Jewish nation, and for the dissemination of Torah and chassidus. The first of Kislev has since been celebrated by Lubavitcher chassidim as a day of thanksgiving and rejoicing. The following Niggun, composed by Reb Feitel Levin at the time of the Rebbe’s return, which would become known as the “Alef Kislev Niggun”, captures the great joy experienced by the Chassidim due to the Rebbe's miraculous recovery. ---------------------------------------------------- Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!! https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk --------------------------------------------------- To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059, or email [email protected]. Yahrtzeit Yomi #1242!! ג חשון Harav Ovadia Yosef רב עובדיה יוסף ב״ר יעקב ראשון לציון (1920 - 2013)-------------------------------------------------- Maran HaRav Ovadiah Yosef ZTL Today, ג׳ חשון, marks the 11th yahrtzeit of Maran Harav Ovadia Yosef ZTL, the revered Gaon and Posek, who restored the crown of Sephardic Jewry. He had a mind big enough to master all of Torah. A spirit big enough to lead his beloved people. And a heart big enough to contain all of Klal Yisroel. The brilliant Gaon was an unyielding warrior for Torah. As a young Rabbi in Cairo, he courageously stood firm for Halacha - even as a gun was pointed at his head. In the early days of the State of Israel, he struggled to bring his Sephardic brethren back to the magnificent Torah traditions that many were abandoning with terrifying haste. Maran’s encyclopedic knowledge was breathtaking and unparalleled. In his scores of brilliant sefarim, he “restored the Crown to its Glory“, fighting the battles of Torah and maintaining the preeminence of Maran Beit Yosef. As unyielding as Maran was in defense of Torah, so was he compassionate in personal encounters. He loved all Jews, and they loved him. He was a loving father to all those in distress, and the main address for the thorniest of problems facing his brethren. Perhaps *the story that best captures Maran’s dedication to those in need is one that occurred approximately 14 years prior to his passing: Maran wasn’t feeling well one day, and his son Rav David and R’ Aryeh Deri took him to the hospital to be examined. The doctors determined that he had suffered a heart attack, and they told him that he needed an emergency stent procedure to open his arteries. ״אני צריך לחזור הביתה שלש שעות״, “I need to go home for three hours”, was Maran’s immediate reply. “Then I’ll return for the procedure.” Rav David and R’ Aryeh were concerned that the delay would be dangerous, and they tried to dissuade him from leaving the hospital. “Why does the Rav need three hours?” R’ Aryeh asked. “I’m not sure that I’ll come out of this procedure alive,” Maran explained, “and I’m in the middle of writing a teshuva to free an aguna. If I don’t finish writing the teshuva, who will take responsibility to release this woman from her loneliness?” They brought him home, and he finished writing the teshuva permitting the aguna to remarry. Only then did he return to the hospital for the lifesaving procedure!! יהי זכרו ברוך, ‏זכותו יגן עלינו!! *this story was told by Rav David Yosef at Maran ZTL’s funeral.---------------------------------------------------- Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!! https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk --------------------------------------------------- To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059, or email [email protected].
