Chanukah After Bondi Beach: When Light Did Not Retreat

Dec 23, 2025

1:00:13

As Chanukah 5786 began, our hearts were made heavy. Our Festival of Light opened with unfathomable darkness, as fifteen Jews were brutally murdered al Kiddush Hashem while a public menorah lighting at Bondi Beach was just getting underway. Among those murdered were two rabbis - shluchim of the Rebbe serving the Jewish community, a Holocaust survivor, and a ten-year-old child. Dozens more were wounded, many critically. Before the menorah could be lit, murderous violence erupted, leaving parents bereaved, spouses widowed, children orphaned, and an entire community profoundly traumatized. There are no words that make this make sense. And our Emunah and Bitachon (faith and trust) in Hashem, do not ask us to pretend otherwise. But Chanukah was never about denying the darkness. It was about bringing light into it, and ultimately eradicating it, by allowing that light to shine forth. This Chanukah, we mourned. We cried. We prayed. For the wounded, for the families whose lives were forever changed, and for the safety of Jewish communities everywhere. And at the very same time, we did not withdraw from who we are. Not even for a moment. In fact, remarkably, we did exactly the opposite. Across cities and continents, The Rebbe's Shluchim uplifted and inspired many, gathering crowds to observe and celebrate a Chanukah unlike any other in living memory. Menorahs were lit proudly and publicly. Jewish life was lived openly. Torah ideas were shared and taught. Acts of kindness multiplied. Songs of faith were sung, and the joy of Yiddishkeit carried the days. This attack was meant to frighten Jews away from public Jewish life. It was meant to make visible Jewish practice feel unsafe, optional, or negotiable. They expected us to shrink into the shadows. Instead, it magnified the light. Exponentially. Chanukah’s presence was elevated in ways we could not have previously imagined. Menorahs shone more brightly than ever, and the light of Yiddishkeit spread outward with joyful resolve, without hesitation and without apology. Not as an act of protest, and not to make a statement. But because this is how The Rebbe taught his Chassidim and Shluchim to live. Because this is what our mission demands: not merely to continue bringing light, but to increase its intensity precisely where darkness tried to take hold. As we reflect on Chanukah 5786, we are reminded that light does not need to shout. It simply needs to be increased. We continue to pray that Hashem comfort the mourners, heal the wounded, protect our communities, and bring an end to this senseless cruelty. And we commit ourselves to strengthening all that brings light into the world. And we resolve to strengthen our Shlichut: to increase the study of Torah, the performance of mitzvot, and the spread of light with greater clarity and commitment - precisely in the places where darkness sought to prevail - to hasten the long-awaited arrival of Moshiach, speedily and in our days. Amen.

"You Aren't Entitled" Episode #146 of CONQUERING ANXIETY Series on Trust: The Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Nov 13, 2024

1:01:08

This Episode inaugurates our study of the Six Chapter of the Gate of Trust. At this point, the author feels compelled to demonstrate the folly of a common, yet entirely misguided approach to living which he titles: "Solicitors of Securities." Zeroing in on those who choose not to place their Trust in G-d -- until they get a guarantee from Him first, Rabbainu Bachaya calls this attitude foolish and wrongheaded. Demonstrate the errors of this approach, he proceeds in methodically Debunking the 7 Myths people often mistakenly believe in. These proverbial Truth Bombs are intending to shatter silly preconceived notions, by highlighting their utter foolishness, and by proving their unmistakable fallacy. To simplify the encompassing messages of each of these seven discomfiting truths, we'll label each of them. The first being: "YOU AREN'T ENTITLED" is designed to clearly illustrating the magnitude of this error and refute its very foundation. The first of seven immediately and vividly exposes the erroneous choices misguidedly made by multitudes, totally ignoring plain logic, common sense and facts that matter. This first Episode of the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon" has been dedicated by Felix and Rita Zilnik commemorating the Yahrzeit of Rita's mother. It comprises the 146th consecutive video designed to teach you how and why you should nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

"You Aren't Entitled II" Episode #147 of CONQUERING ANXIETY Series on Trust: The Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Nov 21, 2024

1:04:54

In the second Episode of Chapter Six we continue to illustrate the foolishness of a the first of misguided approaches people tend to follow. The first of which is not to place their Trust in G-d, until they can obtain a guarantee that all will be arranged to their full satisfaction. Seeking to shine a bright light to expose the extreme folly of this attitude, Rabbainu Bachaya methodically debunks this first of 7 Myths people wrongheadedly believe in. In dropping Truth Bombs to utterly disprove these silly notions, once and for all, The Sha'ar Habitachon exposes the underlying folly of the very foundations that the mistaken assumptions are built on. "YOU AREN'T ENTITLED -- Part 2" completes the thesis that demonstrates the magnitude of this error in order to fully refute it entirely. This will complete the first of set of structural fallacies dismantled in this chapter. This second Episode of the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon" comprises the 147th consecutive video designed to teach you how to best nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

"Endless Expense | In Debt" Episode #148 of CONQUERING ANXIETY Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Nov 27, 2024

1:22:24

In the Third Episode of Chapter Six "ENDLESS EXPENSES | OUTSTANDING DEBTS" we move on to address the second and third response to the ill-conceived expectation of financial security as a pre-condition to placing Trust in, and choosing to, devote oneself to serving Hashem. The first of these next two refutations for the person seeking to obtain a guarantee of plenitude and prosperity, before 'throwing caution to the winds' to rely on G-d and commit himself -- lies in the absurdity of requesting security (in the form of an amount) when it's impossible to know what they actually need! Once the foolish and unrealistic nature of this demand is entirely debunked, Rabbainu Bachaya advances onto the third (of the seven arguments) he presents. In this response he illustrates how outrageous it would be for someone, already drowning in debt, to make an additional demand of his creditor. These two distinctly disparate, yet strangely similar Truth Bombs continues to demonstrate the underlying folly of their very foundations -- enroute to full refutation. This third Episode of the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon" class is dedicated in honour of, and לעילוי נשמת HaKadosh Rabbi Tzvi ben Alexander HaKohen Kogan הי״ד It comprises the 148th consecutive video designed to teach you how to best nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Dec 4, 2024

Segment Four of Chapter Six, "OUTSTANDING DEBT II," is a continuation of Truth Bomb Three, further emphasizing just how egregious and inappropriate it is to have an expectation of financial security as a pre-condition to Trustingly serve Hashem! This Episode richly elaborates the brazen folly of expecting "perquisite prosperity" as the allowance for reliance on G-d and commitment to His service. Rabbainu Bachaya expands on the ridiculous supposition that those drowning in debt, might make new demands of their creditor. Here he demonstrates in detail just how bizarre, utterly foolish, and even outrageous it is to approach G-d this way. This fourth class on the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon" class is sponsored by Michelle Kahn celebrating the life of her beloved Father, Tzvi Mordechai ben Harav Moshe, whose Yahrzeit is Rosh Chodesh Kislev. "Due Date" #150th Episode of CONQUERING ANXIETY the Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Dec 18, 2024

1:20:18

Segment Five of Chapter Six, "DUE DATE," is a most unusual continuation of the previously articulated second and third "Truth Bombs" about the inappropriateness of our setting pre-conditions of financial security before placing Trust in Hashem. Introducing a real-life interaction between a Sage and ordinary citizens, Rabbainu Bachaya adds clarity and greater emphasis on why this attitude is so unreasonable and wrong! This life-lesson is drawn directly from a case in point conversation. Analyzing this pious person’s postulation to plain people enables the author to vividly illustrate two powerful arguments he has already made. And, somehow it is only by means of this engaging homily that anecdotal support for past two Responses evolves! This Episode further emphasizes just how egregious and inappropriate it is to have an expectation of financial security as a pre-condition to Trustingly serve Hashem! The fifth class on the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon," is dedicated for the merit of a Refu'ah Shlaima and long life of Rabbi Sholom Dovber ben Chava. This segment comprises the 150th consecutive video Episode designed to teach you how to best nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

"Wrong Reasons" Episode #151 of CONQUERING ANXIETY the Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Jan 8, 2025

1:21:19

In the sixth segment of Chapter Six, "WRONG REASONS," we move onto the Fourth "Truth Bomb" about the inappropriateness of setting pre-conditions of financial security before placing Trust in and dedicating ourselves to the service of Hashem. Listing the three reasons people might ask for security from a debtor, Rabbainu Bachaya demonstrates how obviously wrong and inapplicable any of these reasons are when it comes to G-d, our Guarantor and Provider. Although the lessons are so plainly apparent, it seems people still require some sort of scriptural proof, which in and of itself engenders investigation and beg clarification: After all, why provide a citation to prove things already at the core of our faith? Conversely, if there's no belief to begin with, how would biblical quotations help?! Once everything is clarified this Episode adds much to illustrate how absolutely disgraceful and outrageous it is to demand security from Hashem! The sixth class on the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon," comprises the 151st consecutive Episode teaching you how to best nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

"The Guarantee" Episode #152 of CONQUERING ANXIETY -- the Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Jan 15, 2025

1:30:57

In the seventh segment of Chapter Six, "THE GUARANTEE," we unpack the Fifth "Truth Bomb" illustrating how the Terms and Conditions that typically apply in fostering peace of mind are entirely inapplicable here. As such, when it comes to the fulfillment of our sacred duty to place unwavering Trust in Hashem and committing ourselves to His service -- absolutely no guarantees, terms, or conditions of material success will bring inner tranquility regardless. And, in fact, Rabbainu Bachaya clearly demonstrates how the exact opposite is true! Emphasizing the folly, and even false notion of otherwise sound financial strategies, the lesson is yet again obvious and plainly apparent. To undergird the veracity of these ideas there is both a scriptural proof, and a Mishnaic message cited. This Episode further enables us to understand and appreciate how utterly pointless it is to ask Hashem for lifetime security in advance. After all, the residuals amassed will provide none of the coveted peace of mind anyway! The seventh class on the Sixth Chapter of "Sha'ar HaBitachon," comprises the 152nd consecutive Episode teaching you how to best nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

The ninth, and final Episode of Chapter Six, presents the Seventh and last of the "Truth Bombs" on Bitachon. Euphemistically entitled "DELIVERY HOUR" to represent the idea that certainty of timing or the successful delivery of one's promises are anything but guaranteed -- an important message that concludes the entire chapter. Chasidic teachings and stories serve to fully illustrate this lesson. Yet, beyond the straightforward message author himself, and the specific words he chose to use, here even the precise details the commentaries reveal nuanced subtleties and even more profound ideas that we'd have imagined! "Trust Issues I" Episode #155 of CONQUERING ANXIETY the Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Apr 30, 2025

1:18:58

In the previous chapters, Rabbainu Bachaya clarified the nature of Trust in Hashem; by defining precisely what it is, isn't, and explaining why it's an important part of our spiritual composition. He also gave us Torah-true methodologies by virtue of which we can successfully develop and implement Bitachon in our day-to-day life. Yet, in the same way that there are elements that best facilitate the nurturing of real clear Trust in G-d, there are also things that obstruct and diminish it. Instruction regarding these harmful and detractive components, so that we know how to avoid them form the opening volley of Chapter Seven. As such this inaugural Episode entitled "TRUST ISSUES Part I" begins by highlighting personal deficiencies and shortcomings that can get in the way of Building Bitachon. After referencing the general failings that would interfere with other Faith Foundations, and as such negatively impact one's Trust as well, we move onto a laser focus of the things that are uniquely detrimental and even detract from one's Bitachon. We'll analyze the "Impediments of Ignorance:" from a lack of awareness regarding Hashem's compassion and engagement with all things created, as well as lack of knowledge about His Torah and the clear instructions it contains about reliance on Hashem in certain matters. This class has been sponsored by Michelle Kahn Celebrating the life of her brother Meechael Kalman Ben Tzvi Mordechai (z”l) on his Yahrtzeit, today the First of Iyar. This inaugural segment on the seventh chapter comprises the 155th consecutive Episode teaching you how to nurture your Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

May 7, 2025

1:10:49

In the previous [inaugural] Episode of Chapter Seven, we began by highlighting the kinds of wrongheaded ideals, and spiritually deficient attitudes that necessarily impede healthy nurturing of appropriate Faith Foundations. We learnt about misconceptions that confound our understanding of Hashem's oneness, notions that disable us from seeing the Creator's kindness, and weaken our resolve in properly serving G-d. Here, Rabbeinu Bachaya emphasizes how the things that serve as obstacles in developing Faith-based Basics, will naturally obstruct our Building of Bitachon as well. After re-stating general failings that interfere with the other foundational elements of our spiritual wellbeing, and as such, certainly negatively influence our nurturing of proper Trust, he moved on to things uniquely detrimental to Bitachon. In this new Episode, TRUST ISSUE II we continue, where we left off by analyzing the unique detriment and impediments engendered by juvenile and underdeveloped comprehension of Hashem's compassion and engagement with all things created. It is this kind of boorish and ignorant perspective about G-d's ways that inhibits our ability to rely on Hashem and achieve the inner tranquility that such Trust affords. This incredibly illuminating class has been sponsored by Allan and Ira Hetz to commemorate the Yahrtzeit of Ira's late father, Pesach Tzvi Ben Yitzchak Chaim OBM. The second segment on the Seventh, and final chapter of Sha'ar HaBitachon comprises the 156th consecutive Episode of this series that can gift you the knowledge and tools to nurture Trust in G-d and conquer your anxieties. May 14, 2025

1:14:03

The highlighting of faulty Faith Foundations frees us to remedy these debilitating notions that erode healthy nurturing of trust, disabling us from build our Bitachon on solid footings. In correcting notions -- stemming mostly from misconceptions about Hashem's Oneness, His Benevolence, and endless Kindnesses -- we're empowered to strengthen our resolve and go on to serve G-d according to our true ability. After listing things interfering with general spiritual wellbeing, we moved on to things uniquely detrimental to Bitachon. In this new Episode, TRUST ISSUE III we continue, where we left off by analyzing the unique detriment and impediments engendered by juvenile and underdeveloped comprehension of Hashem's providence, dominion, and the control He maintains over all of creation. It is this kind of boorish perspective about G-d's ways, that grossly inhibit our ability to rely on Hashem and achieve the inner tranquility only afforded by true Trust in G-d! "UnCharitable" Episode #158 of CONQUERING ANXIETY the Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

May 21, 2025

1:25:06

In the first three Episodes of Chapter Seven, we focused successively on highlighting several possible "Trust Issues." All are things that can confound, inhibit, impede, or interrupt the healthy development of our Bitachon -- in one way or another. The implicit purpose of identifying these issues was to enable the shedding these debilitating notions so don't continue to erode the proper and desired nurturing of Trust in Hashem to successfully serve Him according to our innate potential. In this all-new Episode, UNCHARITABLE we move onto the dangers of ignorance in Hashem's Torah -- specifically insofar as Bitachon is concerned. Moving beyond the obvious spiritual and religious shortcomings caused by lack of Torah knowledge, Rabbainu Bachaya maintains that being unlearned in Torah comprises a most exceptional Trust deficiency. That's because the Torah is the only authentic source that teaches us how to have Bitachon. Beyond the general impediment to Trust engendered by lack of literacy about instructions Torah provides for us about placing Trust in Hashem, the pitfalls of this ignorance are specifically depicted by virtue of the explicit commands to "Test G-d" regarding the giving of Ma'aser (tithes). and some of its most the basic principles. An interesting discussion that arises out of this teaching is whether this "Testing" of G-d is limited to Ma'aser, inclusive of Tzedakah or possibly even incorporating all expenditures relating to Mitzvah performance. This insightful segment of the Trust Series is dedicated L'eiluy Nishmat Yaakov ben Dovid HaKohen (Yankel, Jack "Jankiel") Kazdan - a man of great generosity who left his wealth to the Rebbe's institutions - in proximity to his eighth Yahrzeit, Iyar 24. The fourth class on the Seventh, and final chapter of Sha'ar HaBitachon comprises the 158th consecutive Episode of this series that can gift you the knowledge and tools to nurture Trust in G-d and conquer your anxieties. "Cause and Effect" Episode #159 of CONQUERING ANXIETY the Series on Trust: Sha'ar HaBitachon!

May 28, 2025

1:21:56

Continuing the theme of the previous Episodes --troubleshooting the "Trust Issues" likely to inhibit, impede, or interrupt Bitachon development of our -- in this new Episode, CAUSE AND EFFECT we focus on the final obstacle: attributing things to their immediate seeming causes, and ignoring Hashem, the true cause of everything. Rabbainu Bachaya chooses to demonstrate the folly, and absurdity of this approach by means of metaphor. With the example of an absolute ruler imposing his desired punishing consequences by chain of delegation; this principle stunningly illustrated. In the parable, the closer the actual cause the less potent it really is. This basic axiom of human administration becomes a lucid depiction of Divine administration and the veracity of G-d's omnipotence! The implications this has regarding our understanding of what enables and disables us from cultivating Bitachon is easily understood. To help us further appreciate the wide-ranging nature of this foundational lesson, we lean on supporting teaching of our Sages, from Talmud to Zohar, Midrash to mediaeval and contemporary Torah teachings. In the end, we can clearly see how and why Torah teaches us to recognize that G-d is the sole arbiter of all reality, and focusing on the proximity of the immediate cause becomes an insurmountable barrier insofar as attaining Bitachon is concerned! A fascinating parable of the Baal Shem Tov about the system of Angelic purpose and function further underscores and highlights the powerful message being conveyed. This exceptionally colourful, and insightful segment of the Trust Series is the fifth class on the Seventh, and final chapter of Sha'ar HaBitachon. It comprises the 159th consecutive Episode of this series that can gift you the knowledge and tools to nurture Trust in G-d and conquer your anxieties. Forever! How this was made

"The Trust Ladder I, Born Innocent" Episode #160. CONQUERING ANXIETY Series on Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Jun 11, 2025

1:04:31

Moving on from the theme of the opening four Episodes of chapter seven -- which focused on identifying the obstacles in developing, and/or maintaining of our Bitachon -- we now move on to THE TRUST LADDER documenting rising levels within Bitachon. Yet, per previously, just as shortsighted, faithless perspectives of Divine management, and the cause and effect of things are an impediment to acquiring Bitachon, here too we will learn how our awareness of Divine Providence and mastery (or lack thereof) enhances (or diminishes) the level of Bitachon we can nurture and develop. This Episode introduces Part One, aptly entitled: BORN INNOCENT. Here we will demonstrate the direct corollary between the level of understanding in the progression of Trust Development. The analogue to our trust in G-d is obvious. Although matters of Faith and Trust nest in the supra rational dimension of our psyche, Rabbainu Bachaya clearly illustrates natural bridge between rhyme, reason and understanding towards the attainment of proper Trust in G-d! By virtue of the real-life parable seen with the development of a human being from their earliest infancy; this idea is made stunningly obvious and lucid depiction of how our comprehension of Divine power, administration, omnipotence will directly impact the level of Bitachon we'll be privileged enough to achieve! To help us further appreciate the wide-ranging nature of this foundational lesson, we lean on supporting commentary of our Sages, the Rishonim (mediaeval masters) and contemporary Chasidic insights. This segment of our Trust Series is the sixth class on the Seventh, and final chapter of Sha'ar HaBitachon, comprising the 160th consecutive Episode of this series designed to enable you to nurture Trust in G-d and overcome your anxieties. Jun 25, 2025

1:00:34

In this seventh segment of chapter seven -- we continue with Part II of THE TRUST LADDER that delineates the different steps taken in the development of true Bitachon. The new Episode, JUST A MEASURE OF FAITH sees the person who matures slowly being to ascend the Ladder of Faith, rung by rung, in measured fashion. Although only circumstantially inspired to begin to take note of Divine Providence and Hashem's mastery at least it's a beginner level of Bitachon that can ultimately be nurtured and further developed. Rabbainu Bachaya illustrates the failing nature of such faith -- catalyzed merely by desperation yet acknowledges its value in the eventual attainment of true Trust in G-d! To help us further appreciate the wide-ranging nature of this foundational lesson, we lean on supporting commentary of our Sages, the profoundly insightful teaching of the Rishonim (medieval masters) and Achronim caped by fascinating contemporary Chasidic insights. This segment of our Trust Series is the seventh class on the Seventh, and final chapter of Sha'ar HaBitachon. It comprises the 161st consecutive Episode of this series that's designed to enable you to nurture Trust in G-d and overcome your anxieties. Forever!

"A Working Man" is Episode #162 of CONQUERING ANXIETY the Series on Trust ~ Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Jul 16, 2025

1:33:36

In this eighth segment of Chapter Seven, we continue ascending into the rarified heights of authentic Bitachon—genuine trust in Hashem. This new episode, A WORKING MAN, profiles a person who has grown far beyond the average mindset of self-reliant human beings who think they control their own fate. This individual knows that Hashem alone is the true Provider yet also understands the Torah imperative to "go to work" and do one’s part—because that’s how Hashem structured His world. Put simply: from this higher plane of spiritual awareness, one recognizes that all sustenance comes only through Divine Grace. Yet this doesn’t diminish his personal effort—it elevates it. Work becomes not just a necessity, but a holy act, a divinely mandated means through which G-d’s blessings flow. In this state, a person is no longer defined by their profession but views their vocation as the envelope by which Hashem delivers His sustenance. It becomes a vital part of Avodat Hashem—a life of meaningful mission, serving the Creator and deepening one’s relationship with Him. This advanced level of Bitachon is marked by complete trust in Hashem’s Providence and Mastery, resulting in inner peace and lasting serenity—the natural fruits of a soul anchored in Emunah and Bitachon. Rabbeinu Bachaya then leads us even higher: to a lofty level where one rejoices in whatever Hashem provides, perceiving G-d’s loving care in every detail of life. He trusts not only that Hashem sustains him, but that whatever Hashem gives is best for him. That certitude leads to contentment, joy, and an abiding satisfaction with one’s lot. This teaching is part of our Trust Series—the eighth class in the seventh (and final) chapter of Sha’ar HaBitachon, and the 162nd consecutive episode of this transformative journey teaching us to nurture real trust in G-d—and finally overcome anxiety, forever.

"Pinnacle of Trust" Episode #163 of CONQUERING ANXIETY - the Series on Trust ~ Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Jul 23, 2025

1:20:08

Episode Title: PINNACLE OF TRUST Chapter Seven | Segment Nine | Class 163 in the Trust Series In this climactic class, we reach the ultimate, rarified apex of authentic Bitachon—a transcendent level of trust in Hashem that surpasses all that came before. Here, Rabbeinu Bachaya introduces us to a person who has fully actualized their spiritual potential—an individual whose entire being is focused solely on cleaving to Hashem and fulfilling the divine mission for which they were created. This elevated soul doesn’t just trust that what Hashem provides is good. They have no ambitions, desires, or interests other than deepening their connection to the Creator. Their own comfort and material wellbeing are not even factors in their consciousness. This surpasses even the previous exalted level, where a person fully accepted Hashem’s will, relinquishing all personal preferences. In contrast, this perfected ba’al bitachon finds delight only in the relationship with Hashem and the opportunity to serve Him. To fully illuminate this profound teaching, we draw on a rich array of classic and contemporary Torah commentaries—culminating with several dazzling insights from Chassidus that help bring these lofty ideas down to earth. The ninth installment in the seventh (and final) chapter of Sha’ar HaBitachon has been generously sponsored by Lisa White to commemorate the Yahrzeit of her husband Zev ben Avraham. This comprises the 163rd Episode in our transformative Trust Series as we continue to discover how this timeless Torah pathway can help us finally nurture real trust in G-d… and overcome anxiety forever.

"Name that Trust" Episode #164 of CONQUERING ANXIETY - the Series on Trust ~ Sha'ar HaBitachon!

Jul 30, 2025

1:20:36

Chapter Seven | Segment Ten | Episode #164 – The Siyum, Grand Finale! In this climactic final class of the Shaar HaBitachon series, we bring our epic journey to a close by exploring the deeper meaning behind the ten distinct Hebrew terms for Bitachon (trust) found in Scripture. At first glance, Rabbeinu Bachya’s list may appear poetic or rhetorical. But upon deeper reflection, a profound truth emerges—one that ties together the very essence of creation, the mission of the Jewish people, and the spiritual structure of the human soul. Why Ten? This becomes the pivotal question that shapes our final lesson. Drawing on a wide range of classical and Chassidic sources, this shiur presents a bold and compelling thesis: the number ten is no coincidence. It echoes the Ten Utterances that brought the world into being, the Ten Tests of Avraham Avinu, the Ten Plagues and Miracles that led to our nation’s birth—and the Ten Sefirot, which represent the full schematic of the soul according to Kabbalah. Bitachon is not meant to be a partial or compartmentalized faith. It’s meant to permeate every part of our psyche and soul. Just as we are comprised of ten spiritual faculties, so too must trust in Hashem saturate all ten dimensions of who we are. The ten terms for trust are not redundant—they are a blueprint for fully integrated Bitachon. This episode is lovingly sponsored by Pauline Kamin in memory of her father, Yitzchak ben Moshe, on his Yahrzeit. This spiritual crescendo marks the culmination of a 165-part journey (including the Prologue) through the timeless teachings of Shaar HaBitachon. This monumental series was created to empower every individual to nurture true trust in Hashem—and, with it, to conquer anxiety and live with unshakable inner peace.

Forever!

Forever!

Euphemistically entitled "DELIVERY HOUR" to represent the idea that certainty of timing or the successful delivery of one's promises are anything but guaranteed -- an important message that concludes the entire chapter. Chasidic teachings and stories serve to fully illustrate this lesson.

May 7, 2025

In the opening Episodes of Chapter Seven, we focused on identifying a few faith fallibilities that inhibit, impede, and interrupt the development of our Bitachon.

Assemble the people the men, women, and the little ones, and your stranger... so that they may hear, and so that they may learn; and revere the Lord your G-d and observe to perform all the words of this Torah." While the less than stellar credentials of this King are a matter of dispute, it's clear that this led to a departure of the standard formal procedure. The bigger question is, who precisely was this man, how did it happen, and why is it of lasting relevance to us? This third segment of our unique Hakhel mini- series is dedicated to the Refuah Shleima and, b'Ezrat Hashem, long life of Rebbetzin Henya bat Bracha Devorah Leah.

TOM’S TALMUD TISCH: Series on Hakhel, Part Five Masechet Sotah, Chap. Seven, Page 41a In the fifth Episode we begin studying the Gemara which analyzes the Mishna. Our first focus is on a seeming grammatical inaccuracy in the language it uses -- that could potentially point to the wrong date for the unique Septennial Assembly Reading. Scrolling through the specific Torah verse conveying the day in which the Hakhel Assembly Mitzvah should be held we encounter a surprising biblical anomaly. For all the clear instructions, the exact time still seems unclear. Why the circuitous language, and what is added by multiple methods of identification, and shouldn’t G-d have it conveyed things more directly and clearly? Discover the fascinating bigger picture, and see what else comes to light when we fully decipher these pregnant words? This is the Fifth Episode in our unique Hakhel mini- series.

TOM’S TALMUD TISCH: Series on Hakhel, Part Six Masechet Sotah, Chap. Seven, Page 41a ~ Dissecting Scripture to Determine the Date of Hakhel! In the sixth Episode we continue delving more deeply into the Gemara which clarified the information presented in the Mishna -- in a Quest to Discover the Best Day for The Assembly! To be sure, the Talmud’s careful analysis of verses did reveal the divinely ordained date for our Septennial Assembly Mitzvah. Yet, despite unravelling the seeming superfluous syntax of the scripture regarding the date, the precise timing is still unclear! Compellingly, for all Talmudic pinpointing, the precise date remains a mystery. Surprisingly, the great Sages of the mediaeval era continued to debate this, and until our very day, the question ahs never been fully resolved! Why we weren’t given clearer instructions, and ultimately when exactly is the right time is something we may only discover once Moshiach arrives. Here you will learn to appreciate the differing schools of thought and achieve a broader panoramic view of the full jurisprudence governing this exceptional Torah Commandment.

HONOUR OF KINGS

Jan 23, 2023

1:14:55

TOM’S TALMUD TISCH: Series on Hakhel, Part Seven Masechet Sotah, Chap. Seven, Page 41a In this seventh Episode we continue the analysis of information found in the Mishna -- deciphering the meaning of the mechanics of the artificially created ceremony involving rank and file of Jewish political and spiritual leadership to best fulfill the biblical Septennial Assembly Mitzvah of Hakhel! Simply stated: while the Torah clearly ordains the need to gather the nation for an important event that would feature a Torah Reading by its supreme royal leadership, there is no mention of introducing it in a dazzling display of honour to human beings. And, even if the King's Honour is framed as a component of the Mitzvah, doesn’t honouring others infringe upon the unique dignity due to royalty alone? The formalities of the event are fully clarified as we learn to appreciate greater involvement of the Temple dignitaries, alongside with the Monarchy. Finally, a look at posture and protocol: who can sit, and who must stand and what that means to us, the Jewish People. Understanding Temple Respect, and the uniqueness of the Davidic Monarchy vs other Houses of Jewish Royal will ultimately lead into a fuller comprehension of Hakhel itself! This is the Seventh Episode in our special mini- series on Hakhel.

HONOUR OF KINGS II

1:07:24

TOM’S TALMUD TISCH: Series on Hakhel, Part Eight Masechet Sotah, Chap. Seven, Page 41a Was Righteous Relinquishing of Royal Respect, Right or Wrong? In this Eighth and final Episode, we conclude analyzing the pithy information on fulfilling the biblical Septennial Assembly Mitzvah of Hakhel that's available in the Mishna. As we've learnt gathering the nation for an event that leaves the maximum after-effect calls for the participatory leadership of a supreme royal figure -- if possible. The inspiring atmosphere at our Septennial Assembly was created, in part, by the sitting Monarch playing the pivotal role. Ultimately, much of Hakhel’s unique aura revolved around the Crown, and the King's Honour therefore comes to be viewed an important component of the Mitzvah. This helps us appreciate our desired involvement of even a less-than-fully-sanctioned regent who represented (at best) a dubious, non-accredited monarchy. The unorthodox humility of one such supreme political leader, leads into a discussion of whether any governing monarch may ever relinquish royal esteem without inappropriately --and unlawfully diminishing the honour of the monarchy itself? The same foreigner-King's surprising emotional outburst elicited an even more surprisingly flattering response from the Torah-sage-led-nation. Was their flattery a tragic and costly mistake? Finally, we'll discover how this sheds light on, and provides a better, fuller comprehension of the Mitzvah of Hakhel itself!

In this Episode, we will backtrack to the events leading up to the terrifying siege and the seemingly impossible situation King Hezekiah and his loyal citizens found themselves in. It opens with the March on Jerusalem. The Talmud relates a remarkable narrative of Sennacherib’s stunning successive string of a single day’s journeys as he marched towards Zion. Astonishingly, many stops were made by this aggressive attack army made over the course of that same day. Yet, even more stunningly, it was the force of spirit, rather than their spirit of force that would carry the day. SOLE RELIANCE

1:18:20

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seven ~ ! Before moving onto detailed technical strategies of implementing "True Trust" there's a major "Trust Issue" that needs to be dealt with, defined, and resolved. It revolves around the requisite singular devotion and a mandatory "Must of Monogamy" that Bitachon in Hashem demands! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

563

INVINCIBLE ME

Jun 3, 2021

1:19:13

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eight ~ ! Regarding "True Trust" in G-d, R' Bachaya establishes the principle that its efficacy is dependent on it being experienced in Monochromatic Monogamy. Anything less singular or absolute causes G-d to remove His Providence. But does that mean that Hashem disengages? And, if that statement is to be taken at face value, can it jibe with the Baal ShemTovonian idea that Individual Providence and Divine Design is always at play with G-d "bringing existence into being each moment?" Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

564

BROKEN CISTERNS

Jun 7, 2021

1:21:38

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Nine ~ ! R' Bachaya makes a bold claim: "True Trust" mean singular , sole and absolute reliance on G-d alone. The bottom line is clear: Trust in Numbers or Multiples is not a Kosher equation. In fact, the Addition of other factors will necessarily equals a Subtraction of your Blessings and More will be Less! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

OX-BOW INCIDENT

Jun 8, 2021

49:40

Sha’ar HaBitachon -Episode Ten - ~ ! The Burden of Proof still upon him, R' Bachaya now bolsters the notion that trusting reliance on an entity other than G-d will necessarily cause the removal of Divine Providence. In recounting our Nation's Desert Debacle King David's prophetic, precise poetic-prose narrative highlights the Trust Exchange that nearly Destroyed Us! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

566

BLESSED vs. CURSED

Jun 10, 2021

1:02:54

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eleven . ~ ! In his final thrust to satisfy the Burden of Proof still upon him, R' Bachaya weaves a surprising tapestry of kindred scriptural strands vividly illustrating a picture of "True Trust" that doesn't leave room for neutral colors or middle ground, because ultimately, trusting in Hashem is a Sum Zero Pursuit. In this now sharply defined landscape, it becomes abundantly clear that Trust-Inclusivity can never be a Virtue, rather a debilitating Demerit that diminishes our blessings! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

567

FOLLY TO BE WISE

Jun 11, 2021

1:04:43

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twelve ~ ! Having established the singular nature of Bitachon Basics with the notion that we are relying on, or trusting in anything other G-d necessarily detracts from and even diminishes our unique Divine downflow of sustenance, vitality and blessing, the author now moves to identify specifics. The first form of debilitating Trust-Inclusivity occurs when people rely on their own wisdom and wherewithal, although everyone one knows that Smart People Don’t Always Finish First! In fact, wisdom can easily become foolishness when Highly Intelligent People place Trust in their Talent instead of in G-d -- the true and singular source of success and sustenance! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

568

THE SEEKER

Jun 14, 2021

1:23:05

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirteen ~ ! In the previous Episode, we introduced the principal that wisdom and cunning cannot to be relied upon for success, because in truth success comes solely from G-d’s blessings. This doesn't mean we aren't required to make natural efforts; Torah necessarily mandates toil as we aren't permitted to "Rely on Miracles" to receive our unique Divine downflow of sustenance, vitality, and blessing. This idea is now further developed and clarified as we move from reliance on intelligence and acumen to strength and talent. In summation, while we must do our part, we must always be mindful of the true fount of our sustenance and place trust solely in G-d -- the singular source of any success we are fortunate enough to receive! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

569

MONEY NEVER SLEEPS

Jun 15, 2021

1:10:56

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fourteen ~ ! In previous Episodes, we clarified the folly of relying on wisdom or talent to avoid anxiety over the future because neither ensures success, which comes solely from G-d's blessings. Now we address the notion that money should not be relied upon either. Although wealth can buy many things, due to its transitory nature the one thing it can never purchase is certainty or security. Ultimately, real inner peace can only be achieved through trusting in the only true source of goodness -- Al-mighty G-d Himself. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

570

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD

Jun 16, 2021

1:15:44

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifteen ~ ! In previous Episodes, we analyzed the folly of relying on money to avoid anxiety over the future. The biblical premise of folly revolved around the transitory nature of money. As they say, "it can go as quickly as it comes." Prophetic insight ordains that financial gains or even great affluence can vanish overnight. As such the argument was made Certainty should be sought and found only in the Omnipotent, Al-mighty G-d Himself! In this Episode, we will take this idea much further we continue to address the notion that money should not be relied upon . Even if wealth wouldn't take flight, as its transitory nature isn't that always so obvious, our Scriptures spell out the reasons it still offers no guarantee of happiness, inner satisfaction or even peace of mind. Great emphasis is placed on the truism that the tranquil coveted state of being can only be achieved through Bitachon in the only truly trusted source of goodness -- Hashem! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

571

NO LONGER SLAVES

Learn how you can achieve liberty from those who might otherwise dominate, shackle, or enslave us. Indirect prophetic insight frames the logical conclusions of how we might behave when Faith is internalized and distilled into Trust. Here, the truthful notion of Bitachon serving to set us free is vividly illustrated and spelled out in the clearest of terms. Ultimately, you can really achieve the independence you crave, but only if you are ready to take that leap of faith through full reliance in the only truly trusted source of goodness -- Hashem! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

PEER PRESSURE

Jun 22, 2021

1:36:49

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventeen ~ ! In the previous episode, we've already elaborated on the notion that Relying on others for Livelihood may cause you to Flatter or Imitate Inappropriate Behavior. We learnt how Bitachon can free you of this form of servitude! We now open a new vistas by looking at the notion of debilitating Peer Pressures that can ultimately only be alleviated by... You guessed it Bitachon! The author draws on Prophet expression to prove and confirm this is rock-solid advice to live by!! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

573

FEAR NO MORE

Jun 23, 2021

1:24:48

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighteen ~ ! We've learnt that internalizing the ideals of Bitachon can free you from the need to flatter powerful, yet bad people. It can even enable resolute courage to stare down negative peer pressure. We will now learn how the Bitachon and Certainty in G-d as your sole Provider must also Free You from Fearing Others Forever! You read right! Total Trust in Hashem will empower you to the point you are able to Speak Truth to Power --when it is the right thing to do --and never again be intimidated again!! Rabbeinu Bachaya will use numerous verses of our sacred scripture to vividly illustrate why he is so sure you can, or more accurately speaking, you MUST overcome fear. This the nature of this illuminated pathway he is teaching you to trustfully take. Moreover, this creates the conduit for the supra-natural blessings it enables us to receive! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

574

PEACE OF MIND

Jun 23, 2021

1:18:46

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Nineteen ~ ! We now move onto the next big benefit Bitachon provides its bearer: the serenity and peace of mind of only a person a whose livelihood is secure can afford. Simply stated: having real Trust in Hashem will necessarily equal living with less worry and anxiety. Quite literally! Rabbeinu Bachaya depicts the person who successfully achieves "Absolute Bitachon" as one who is able to Live with a sense of "Total Security" eliminating a huge concern that eats many people alive, instead enabling to truly feel alive! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

575

THE ALCHEMIST

Jun 24, 2021

1:12:40

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty ~ ! We continue to frame Bitachon's Benefits by means of a Medieval Metaphor. Yet, as it turns out, the person possessing real Trust in Hashem has even less to worry about than one who could magically transfom cheap materials into precious metals. In fact, the truly trusting individual's inner tranquility is by far superior to the mythical alchemist who would theoretically enjoy peace of mind as a result of his guaranteed source of plentiful Parnassa. In addition to demonstrating the Real Clear Power of Bitachon through the Illusionary Lenses of an Imaginative Reality, Rabbeinu Bachaya curiously chooses to employ the Manna metaphor to make his point and richly illustrate the good fortune of one who has successfully achieved "Absolute Bitachon! " Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

576

THE SHELTERING DESERT

Jun 29, 2021

1:42:29

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-One ~ ! Our Emotive Spiritual Mandate to strive towards greater Trust in Hashem was taught to us in the infancy of our nationhood with the decades long Manna Miracle. To further the pragmatic application of that powerful lessons and to highlight the incredibly good fortune of successfully achieving "Absolute Bitachon" we move forward into the life and times of the prophets Elijah and Obadiah. Although presenting ancient stories, it seems abundantly clear that Rabbeinu Bachaya wishes to emphasize that G-d’s Limitless Ability to is not Limited to Antiquity or Overt Miracles. By directing our attention to, and encouraging us to carefully contemplate a selection of dramatic - yet not entirely miraculous - Biblical narratives that are rooted in the rock-solid Bitachon of the central actors, he continues to make the case for Total Trust in Hashem, today! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

577

WORKING MAN’S DEATH

Jun 29, 2021

1:26:10

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Two ’ ~ ! Rabbeinu Bachaya returns to contrasting the peace of mind and tranquility attained by the Alchemist with the person who has attained Absolute Trust in Hashem. Despite the latter's relatively easy quick-get-rich schemes, the reality of every vocation’s occupational hazard and the possibility of a workplace accident are a cause of continuous anxiety. Not so the person living with Bitachon who is the only one capable of reaching true tranquility! A fascinating look into the one of the most famous Psalms confirms and emphasizes the veracity of his Faith and Trust Theology once again making a strong case for placing ones Trust in Hashem, always! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

578

A FANTASTIC FEAR OF EVERYTHING

Jun 30, 2021

1:13:58

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Three ~ ! Rabbeinu Bachaya continues his contrast of the "Alchemist" and the "Person of Faith" who achieves Absolute Trust in Hashem. The contrast is designed to further sketch the portrait illustrating the latter's superiority in attaining true peace of mind. Despite the Alchemist's relatively easy road to prosperity, he is disturbed by a terrific flood of continuous anxiety. Thoughtful analysis leads us to understand that those who “Have it Made” are far from reaching “Inner Peace.” That's because as they invariably become fearful that others will discover their secrets, they become victims of their own success! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

579

AIR, LAND AND SEA

Jul 2, 2021

1:27:42

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty- Four , ~ ! In sharp contrast with the "Alchemist," who is ever concerned about the future as he worries and experiences anxiety about various possible scenarios and unforeseen circumstances, the "Person of Faith" lives with a true sense of inner peace. Fully relying on G-d for his needs, he has absolute Trust that Hashem will sustain and provide for him. His life is therefore free of worry and anxiety! Rabbeinu Bachaya frames this idea with the faith-based view of G-d being the Sole Source of Sustenance across the full spectrum of our material reality from the Lowliest-Embryos to Highest-Flying Birds. From deepest seas to densest geologies there is only One True Provider who continually sustains all life despite their seemingly frail nature. A series of stirring scriptural verses emphasize this truism and ultimately buttress the idea that the person who has Bitachon has no reason to be fearful! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

580

GROUND CONTROL

Jul 5, 2021

1:34:53

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Five ~ ! The lucky "Alchemist" is yet again contrasted with the "Person of Faith." While the former is always fearful of people, afraid of his surroundings and terrified of the powers-to-be, the latter is publicly and proudly able to share his secret to inner serenity. Instead of fearing his environment, this is a person who is relaxed about his future, as he places full trust in Hashem and experiences a total lack of fear. He remains forever calm and is afraid of nothing! Rabbeinu Bachaya maintains that ultimately all earthly powers seek to dominate, control or even harm us, and only full Bitachon can free us from fearing them. People, animals, and even inanimate objects may threaten our well-being, yet if we place total trust in Hashem, He will shield and protect us from all harm. He powerfully illustrates this Faith Truism by referencing stirring scriptural verses clearly articulate the idea that the person possessing Faithful Trust has no reason to be fearful, as he will be shielded by G-d Himself! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

WITNESS INFECTION

Jul 7, 2021

1:30:40

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Six ~ ! The Sixth Stage of Superiority belonging to the "Person of Faith" in contrast with the metaphoric "Alchemist" revolves around the concerns people always have about the ever-lurking possibility of infection, dysfunction, and disease. Ultimately, Wealth Cannot Buy Health and Money Gives No Guarantees! Health Deterioration naturally robs people of their happiness and impairs their ability to enjoy accumulated wealth and material possessions. Pure trust in Hashem provides an elevated vision of life, enabling even ordinary people to transcend these organic inhibitors of terrestrial fulfillment. Trusting in Hashem’s goodness grants a purposeful perspective on sickness and suffering that transforms the impact of these otherwise unpleasant and painful experiences. Drawing on stirring scripture about the futility of physical strength and the spirit of force which ultimately weakens verses the boundless force of spirit that fuels hope and optimism, Rabbeinu Bachaya uses prophetic poetry to complete sketching his portrait demonstrating the unparalleled power of Faithful Trust in Hashem! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

582

THE HUNGER

Jul 7, 2021

1:13:15

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Seven ~ ! Although the metaphorical "Alchemist" might indeed have access to endless financial resources, the trusting "Person of Faith" is still far more secure, as wealth does not always translate into sustenance or satiation. Rabbeinu Bachaya illustrates this with harsh words uttered by our prophets, and sadly, our history has borne tragic testimony to this Torah truism. To be sure, possession of riches seems to guarantee safety, security, and satiation as one assumes hard cash has limitless purchasing powers, yet Big Bucks can’t always stock the Pantry and the cold facts are that all the money in the world may be useless in times of famine. Conversely, People of Bitachon (those privileged with pure trust in Hashem) are prophetically assured that He will always provide for them, in ALL times – even in the most calamitous of days. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

583

TRANSIENT

Jul 8, 2021

1:36:00

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Eight ~ ! as in previous episodes, we continue highlight the various virtues available only to the Ba’al HaBitachon – the person of True Faith, by framing his fortune with that of the proverbial Alchemist. The latter, fearful of his Trade Secrets being discovered will always be on the move. Whether this is to be understood in the most literal of fashions, or even as a euphemism for lack of stability and the feeling of discomfort with his environment – the result is same: here is a transient who cannot stay put and relax, but rather is in constantly changing scenery. Sheltering the secret to his wealth can uncomfortably set him in into motion. The faithful individual who places his trust in G-d experiences the very opposite – an idea which is vividly illustrated in the Scriptures themselves. Moving into a related idea; not only does having Bitachon keep you settled during your terrestrial life, but it also richly provides for your Eternity too. Anxiety over trade secrets and the unique ability to make money not only unsettles a person here, but the benefits also obtained are evanescent and temporary as no one can take it along with them to Heaven either! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

584

FATAL SECRET

Jul 12, 2021

1:35:16

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Twenty-Nine ~ ! We now conclude the Ten Point study-in-contrast highlighting the superiority and virtues of the Ba’al HaBitachon – the person of True Faith, with that of the proverbial Alchemist. The latter, hiding his Trade Secrets from being discovered is essentially a scheming and shady entrepreneur playing Russian Roulette, risking his life in the mix. How precisely this danger is to be understood is a source of contention amongst scholars, but it is clear that in Rabbainu Bachaya’s view the attractive proposition of “Quick Money” is invariably associated with serious risk of danger that can easily turn deadly in the most literal sense. Conversely, the individual who chooses to live with full trust in Hashem has nothing to hide. In fact, quite to the contrary, his proud and public display of Bitachon brings him respect and bountiful blessings, not danger or threats. His trust in G-d come with no adverse side effects, and expressing Faith is always a Risk-Free Endeavor. This idea of the Person-of-Faith serving as a source of blessing and global goodness is rooted in a powerful Scriptural statement, even more vividly illustrated in the brushstrokes of a dramatic biblical narrative. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

SATISFACTION

Jul 13, 2021

1:37:43

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirty ~ ! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirty-Eight ~ ! Chapter One #1: Because before learning How to Trust, we must first clearly Know What precisely Trust Is; e.g. the goal we seek to achieve. Only by first providing a clear and foundational illustration, granting the student a proper grasp of the subject, can the author lead us to appreciate the practical lessons he will subsequently impart. Simply stated: Before teaching us how to develop Bitachon in Hashem, Rabbainu Bachaya’s first sets out to explain what Trust is. With the destination identified; the successful journey towards it can then begin! Here we will discover why very essence of Bitachon is the Peace of Mind that a person achieves specifically by virtue of an emotional relationship and reliance, powerfully expressed by the trust he or she chooses to place in their proverbial provider. Our methodical, incisive and charitable study of the specific words chosen by the celebrated author and his illustrious translator -- as illuminated by the Chasidic Masters -- will allow us to fully unfurl and appreciate the incredible message being conveyed!

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Thirty-Nine ~ ! Chapter One #2: Before we move beyond the Definitions to begin mapping out the process of developing real clear Bitachon in Hashem, Rabbainu Bachaya is compelled to share yet another foundational detail, a Critical Component that ultimately amounts to an intrinsic part of the "Definition." In other words; just possessing a clearly defined meaning of Trust won't suffice for us to begin building our Bitachon. First, we are required to pick up another very important piece of the puzzle! Here we will discover why very essence of Bitachon is the Certainty that the person we choose to Trust will not only honour their commitment, but in fact go beyond the call of duty to do whatever it takes to see that you are looked after. Trust springs directly from this kind of Certainty, and if you aren't sure of that True Trust will be impossible to ever attain. One might still query; did G-d ever make any commitments to us, and even if we believe He did, how can we be sure we are still deserving of His largess? Simply stated, how indeed can we ever be CERTAIN of anything?! This and much more is illuminated with a fascinating tapestry of Midrashic, Medieval, Modern and Post-modern Torah Teachings! This is the 39th episode of the series.

In this episode, we will focus on the first 3 of the 7 requisite characteristics. This will highlight some of the "amino acids" and most important ingredients in facilitating and fostering a truly trusting relationship! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-One # – ~ ! Having identified 3 categories of the personal criteria a truly trusted provider would have to posses for us to blissfully rely upon them and place full confidence in them: 1) they have feelings for me 2) they act on feelings and stay engaged 3) they posses stamina and aren't dettered by opposition In this episode we move on flesh in the next two areas of the kind of qualities we'd seek before placing our blind trust in someone: they'd need to be "in the know" and posses and intimate understanding of our true needs. Plus we'd need to have seen a proven track record of continued engagement and single minded or exclusive devotion towards us. Any thing short of this would undermine our confidence and prevent from building absolute blind Trust is any such a proverbial provider. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Two # " " – ~ ! In Episode 41 the fourth and fifth criteria necessary to inspire the unreserved and absolute trust we call Bitachon, were spelled out. To be sure, as each category of requisite virtues is illustrated the bar is lifted and the field of contenders narrows. In fact, as the entire gamut of (7) qualities a truly trusted entity would have to posses is further unfurled, it becomes increasingly clear that there is only one Provider in whom we can place our full confidence. In this third and closing segment of of the trust trilogy, we learn of the final two criteria whose qualities must be present to allow for the unwavering inner peace called Bitachon to flourish. Rabbeinu Bachaya argues that Absolute Trust [in a provider] can only be earned by [a provider who has] Absolute Control. He concludes with the idea that an equally important imperative [of the would be provider] is to posses is an extreme degree of Kindness and Generosity. We now have a complete picture of what is required to inspire confidence and enable us to build an absolute sense of reliance; a serious understanding of what it takes to achieve a blissful sense of Trust that could grant us perfect peace of mind and remove all and any worry or anxiety forever.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Three , # " " ~ ! As the entire gamut of the Seven Criteria necessary to inspire the unreserved and absolute trust we call Bitachon, is now fully articulated, its understood that a truly trusted provider would have to posses them all. The obvious question there is: are there any people who posses them all (even if only) sometimes? And, if not, is there anyone who possesses even one all these qualities, all the time? Rabbeinu Bachaya will continue to patiently spell things out for us, until we ourselves conclude that there can be only one Provider in whom we should place our full confidence. In this episode we will cover the first three (or four) of the previously enumerated requisite qualities; Compassion, Attentiveness, Strength (and Wisdom/Intuition). Yet, to be sure, it will already be overwhelmingly clear that only G-d can Possess all these qualities - required to earn true Trust - of all the time! Arriving at the obvious conclusion of who is deserving of our Trust we should be increasingly motivated to start seriously building our Bitachon! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Four , # ~ ! Following his systematic presentation of the seven categories of qualities necessary to place unfailing Trust in a powerful provider, Rabbeinu Bachaya lucidly demonstrated how the first can only be found in G-d. He now continues to spell things out in ever increasing certainty gently enabling us to appreciate why he concludes that Hashem is only Provider we should place our full confidence in. In this episode we focus on the final (previously enumerated) requisite qualities, Consistency, Absolute Control and unfailing Generosity and Kindness. The verses quoted will be demonstrably clear in indicating that only G-d can Possess all the qualities that true Trust demands. Bottom line: Absolute reliance on a provider, an essential quality to engender real Trust means the provider must always be available when we need. Can anybody else always be there for us? Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Five , # ~ ! After lucidly articulating the seven categories of criteria necessary to engender Trust in a Provider, Rabbeinu Bachaya demonstrates why If common sense logic prevails, it’s [only] "In G-d We [can] Trust" as the analysis clearly shows how only Hashem possesses all the requisite qualities true Trust requires. In presenting his rational thesis that invariably leads to the idea that only G-d can be relied on and is deserving of our Trust, he quotes a wide variety of biblical verses to prove his point. In this episode we focus on the need for those scripture citations. After all, if it's so logical a conclusion, why is there a need for all the biblical sources as proof that only G-d can Possess all the qualities that true Trust demands. Part Six of the second chapter of the Sha'ar, comprises the 45th episode of this ongoing series. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan
