Sha'ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Six , # ~ ! Despite the incredible power of Pure Clear Faith, Rabbeinu Bachaya surprises us with his introductory statement of the third chapter; Building our Bitachon (essentially a faith-based Trust in G-d) is going to require much more than Blind Faith! After laying the (previously introduced) solid seven-layer foundation, one might have thought that the Structure of our “Trust Psyche” could now be built. Yet clearly the author believed that, not withstanding the fully articulated categories of necessary trust criteria, a critical component is still missing. This all, it must be emphasized, is despite the detailed scriptural references and common-sense logic already presented. In this episode we focus on the need for and importance of achieving not only a spiritual and cerebral connection with the Creator, but also a profound emotional relationship as well. As we will discover, then, and only then, can we hope to Build our Bitachon and bring about lasting inner change that will grant us the tranquility and peace of mind that true Trust in Hashem is all about. Sha'ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Seven , ~ ! Having established that the healthy and lasting development of real Bitachon can only be planted and nurtured in field of one's emotional endeavours. Only once deep and faithful roots are sunk into the fertile soil of the heart can a person's Trust in Hashem properly blossom. The knowledge that is primarily be an emotional effort and undertaking serves to clarify why the seven requisite criteria that allow for trust to grow must be repeated (in a different order) and entirely reframed. Here Rabbeinu Bachaya speaks to the heart and strum the emotive strings of the soul. The first of the qualities to be re-imagined: Rachamim or Compassion. Is this concept Divine or Humane at its Core? That is to say; when a person experiences profound feeling of truly merciful compassion is that reflective of our Creator Himself, or is it primarily a heartfelt form of Human Expression? The astounding thesis that emerges rotates the popular western image on its head and re-casts Mercy it a remarkable new light, ultimately demonstrating why is so foundational a step in Building Bitachon within ourselves! Sha'ar HaBitachon - Episode Forty-Eight , ~ ! Continuing to make the case for Bitachon with ideas designed to address and engage our emotional intelligence to implant understanding in the heart, Rabbeinu Bachaya now re-imagines and freshly presents the next previously presented concept. This restatement of the idea that a to place trust in a provider, you'd have to be certain they know your needs will persuasively lead us to a common sense conclusion: If an entity’s creator will always know it best, then our Omnipotent Creator of not only the form but the very essence of existence itself undoubtedly always Knows Better than Anyone Else! The real question is why is this restatement of faith-based common sense even necessary; isn't a given that an Omnipotent Creator is more Powerful Anyone Else? Discover how the key to understanding this part of what's really a very profound thesis is found by answering that very question! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty , ~ ! To further make the case for Bitachon -- in a way that addresses our emotional intelligence. Rabbeinu Bachaya continues to weave his unique tapestry of faith-inspired logic and scripture in heartfelt yet lucid terms. The fourth requisite quality about Hashem's undivided attentiveness is presented, an it too leads to the same conclusion: Only G-d is deserving of our unreserved Trust! Because no matter how much your trusted friend cares for you there's always the chance they may be preoccupied by other things. Yet Hashem is never overwhelmed and always focuses on you. The arithmetic is simple. Only He is Ever Engaged + Only He is Always Watching = Only in Him should place our Total Reliance and Trust. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-One , ~ ! In this episode, another important and foundational axiom of our Torah Faith is highlighted to further underscore the idea of singular Trust in G-d (Bitachon). This too is conveyed in terms that address our emotional intelligence, and the message is articulated in lucid terms that are easy to personalize in resonate fashion. Here we focus on recognizing and appreciating the truth about Hashem's Exclusive Control over absolutely everything. Rabbeinu Bachaya maintains, with absolute certainty, that no Human Being (despite the freedom of choice we are divinely endowed) has any ability to do anything to or for anyone else unless G-d wants him to. And as such; "only in Him is it appropriate to place our unreserved and total Trust!" This is intended quite literally: No one can do anything without His Permission, no human being can harm or help you unless Al-mighty G-d ordains it so. Logically then, one should never put their trust in anyone else except Hashem – and that's exactly what we refer to when we speak of Bitachon! Chapter Three, Part Six comprises the 51st episode of this ongoing series. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Two , ~ ! In this episode, we are enjoined to properly contemplate, fully absorb, and internalize Hashem's benevolent kindness until we come to "Know" it. This will lead us into experiencing true Trust in G-d, e.g., Bitachon. Rabbeinu Bachaya believed that focus on our Creator's Boundless Kindness would necessarily lead us into Trust. In sharp contrast to people's kindness that invariably isn't dispensed with purest of intentions and comes with expectations of reciprocity. The Creator’s kindness, however, has no hidden agendas or limits! Appropriately awareness will inspire us to place our unreserved and total Trust in Hashem. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Three , ~ ! In this episode, we are directed to contemplate, absorb, and internalize the mind-boggling truth about Hashgacha Pratis (Individual Divine Providence) Hashem's absolute control and supervision of all that happens. Real, clear awareness of this leads us to place unreserved and blissful reliance on G-d, which as we have learnt defines the concept of Bitachon. Here, we discover Rabbeinu Bachaya's stunning illustration of the Torah truism; All Lives Matter -- in complete Harmony with Global Events! Hashem manages our lives from beginning to end. No one has control over their own longevity, affluence, or success. Incredibly, everything around us is pre-ordained in concert. He clearly believed that focusing on this would necessarily lead us into experiencing total Trust in Hashem.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Four , ~ ! The Global System of Cause and Effect doesn't overtly reveal the presence of the Creator. G-d, in effect, conceals His harmonious management of all existence and every event. This leads some to the erroneous conclusion that reality is governed by independent causes, and that Hashem is disengaged from His creation. In this episode, Rabbeinu Bachaya seeks to disabuse us of this misguided notion by directing to focus on and contemplate the weak and inconsequential nature of most causes. The changes or transformation they engender, or spawn clearly indicate the guidance and power of a Higher Force. Understanding this helps us arrive at an appreciation of the truth about Hashem's absolute control and supervision of all that happens. For although the universe may seem to be driven in a random Cause-and-Effect fashion, with disparate happenings triggering indiscriminate results, the truth is that our Creator remains in full control, and everything is always being choreographed by Divine Design. Internalizing this concept will undoubtedly lead us towards achieving Trust in Hashem, and effectively enhance our Bitachon building abilities! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Five , ~ ! G-d does not reveal His presence in Creation, choosing to obfuscate His harmonious management of all that happens. Yet, we believe that Hashem continually brings everything into existence, and runs all affairs of our reality. Always. Having established this in the present episode, Rabbeinu Bachaya now addresses those who anxiously burden and overexert themselves trying make things happen, rather than making reasonable efforts and leaving the rest to G-d. This, he believed, stems form a lack of understanding, weakness of conviction and deficiency in one's faith! Instead, we must achieve mindfulness of the truth about Hashem's absolute control and supervision of all that happens. Everything has its Season. Trying to Hasten it, is Futile and pointless. We must constantly remind ourselves that the Creator runs all our affairs. Getting anxious about the future, and trying to make things happen on your own timeline is a waste of time as ultimately even the timing of events is preordained by G-d! The culmination is a stunning tapestry of Scripture is presented to illustrate these Torah truism as we complete the first Trust Principle of this chapter. In conclusion we must recognize that Hashem alone possesses all Seven Criteria to foster Bitachon, from endless care and concern to complete control of everything. This will lead us to Trust in Hashem and enable us to Build our Bitachon!

Sha’ar HaBitachon Episode Fifty-Six , ~ ! Rabbeinu Bachaya opened this chapter by alluding to five foundational principles that must be internalized if one is to succeed at developing Trust and Building Bitachon. In this episode we are introduced to the second Faith Fundamental: Sincerity! Simply stated, Trust in G-d can only be effective and meaningful when it is a heartfelt and sincere expression of our convictions and beliefs. In fact, as it turns out, Bitachon must be wholehearted. Lip service paid to this lofty faith ideal is a pointless exercise and ultimately meaningless. Only by virtue of genuine trust can we achieve complete Reliance on Hashem! This is clearly demonstrated with uniquely braided strands of sacred Scripture them spell out the basis for this second Trust Principle.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Seven , ~ ! The chapter opened with the ides that there are Five Foundational Principles we must internalize to successfully develop Trust and Build our Bitachon. In this episode we are introduced to the third of five: "Trust Exclusivity" Rabbeinu Bachaya forcefully rejects Diversity in Trust, maintaining that it diminishes Monotheism, and can even lead to outright Polytheism. His position is clear: G-d can't be "Faith-Partnered." Building Bitachon is an Exclusive 'Sum Zero' Spiritual Endeavour. True Trust must translate itself as a constant Mindfulness of G-d being the Sole Master of Health, Wellness and Longevity. Big Tent Trust that would introduce a Combined Prescription of Reliance on G-d AND Doctors equals Less, not More as Bitachon is about Complete Reliance on Hashem ALONE! These lessons can be learnt from a unique story about an ancient ailing Monarch's Bitachon failure, as their veracity is further underscored by the precise language of benison employed by a great Prophet. To be sure, the story is introduced to demonstrate the clear biblical basis for this Trust Principle, yet it leads into an important discovery about the Torah True perspective on Medicine and the Art of Healing! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Eight , ~ ! Amongst the Foundational Principles we must internalize to successfully nurture real Bitachon, is the critical concept of Trust Exclusivity. In this Episode we will continue to explore importance and meaning of this specific principle. Having made the case that Diversifying our Trust diminishes our relationship with Hashem, Rabbeinu Bachayar now concludes with a very different rational: Placing Trust in Multiple Providers will result in failure. Rather than bringing an added measure of security and success, it will typically backfire and weaken the outcome. The bottom line is that having Bitachon necessarily means placing our exclusive trust in G-d. regardless of how intuitively appealing and prudent it may seem to diversify our Trust investments, to including others in that circle may well result in Hashem choosing to abandon us to them! To be sure, the idea that "Big Tent Trust" can undermine and even ruins aspirations isn't new. In fact, a look at the precise language of employed by the great Prophet Jeremiah spells it out quite clearly. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Fifty-Nine , ~ ! The Fourth Fundamental Principles to internalize if we are to successfully achieve the stunning results only Bitachon can bring us is serious Commitment to serving Hashem! In this episode we will explore the big question: Is "Trust in G-d" something Sinners can strive for, or does our Disobedience Blunt Our Bitachon Blessings entirely? Simply stated, can a less than perfect person still benefit from Trusting in Hashem? To be sure, Rabbainu Bachaya will forcefully dismiss the notion that we can simply rely on G-d’s kindness while flagrantly disobeying His Holy Will and Instructions. Yet to be equally sure, Rabbainu Bachaya has, and will continue to emphasize that the benefits of Bitachon aren't unique to a tiny circle of saintly Tzadikim; perfectly righteous and fully deserving individuals. The idea that brazenly ignoring Hashem instructions render one's Trust in Him less than effective isn't surprising. However, there certainly seems to more to the Blessings of Bitachon than a straightforward equation of punishment and Reward, and Divine Consequences. The answers to this seeming conundrum are anything but predictable or pedestrian. Rather, what emerges is a remarkable insightful synthesis and synergy of Torah truths! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty , ~ ! The Fifth Fundamental Principle is about how we are supposed to view and understand the nuanced interplay between Trust and Effort that can, at times, seem oxymoronic. On one hand, we are enjoined to rely exclusively on G-d, yet on the other hand required to make significant efforts to obtain our needs. In this episode we begin the development of our Bitachon conducive perspective by first exploring why we, Human Beings -- in sharp contrast with other forms of life (who needs are readily available) must toil incessantly to have our (even basic) needs met. We open with an illustration of two Divine dimensions: the delineation of differing methods of engagement with, and the directing of all existence. Contrasting G-d’s direct involvement with creation with His choice to catalyzes a Chain of Causes, ultimately designed to provide for us. Rabbainu Bachaya directs us to be mindful of the various steps that Hashem sets in motion lead us into particular reality which can often include a dazzling Domino Effect of both Direct and Distant Causes that effectively obfuscate his involvement! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-One , ~ ! Internalizing the Fifth Fundamental Principle -- about the nuanced interplay between the efforts we human's must make, and the Trust in Hashem we must have -- hinges on our visualization G-d's global orchestration. Ultimately, the actions we are required to take also serve as cogs in the proverbial Turning Wheels of Hashem's ongoing Creation! This means that the Divinely Designed Reality of our existence may well necessitate thoughtful premeditated activity and intervention by human beings too. Our belief that Hashem runs the World with an exquisite Cause and Effect System, doesn’t take our efforts or even initiative out of orbit of the sphere of influence. Rather our activities comprise a key element of that very carefully choreographed process! In the previous episode we opened with an illustration of two Divine dimensions, delineating differing methods of Hashem's directing all existence. In this episode we continue the discussion about contrasting G-d’s direct involvement with creation with His choice to catalyzes a chain of causes that includes our actions too. Ultimately, both are designed by the Creator to provide sustenance for us. Mindful clarity about, and envisioning the various steps that Hashem sets in motion enables us to see past the dazzling Domino Effect of both Direct and Distant Causes to effectively recognize His constant involvement! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Two , ~ ! We've already established that Trust in Hashem means we must view the actions we are required to take, and the efforts we are required to make as simply playing our part in Hashem's ongoing supervision and direction of all reality! Clearly, the Divinely Designed Reality of the world necessitates intervention by human beings. Yet, if Hashem's blessing is our true source of sustenance why is it indeed so important for us to work so hard? In this episode we will develop an appreciation for the ordained necessity for us all to toil in order for us to Earn Our Daily Bread. After all, couldn't G-d just as easily have kindly arranged that our basic needs be readily available to us? This eye-opening and insightful discovery as to why Hashem makes us toil to obtain our Sustenance will change the way you view life forever!

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Five , ~ ! Having previously enumerated reasons as to why Hashem orchestrates the hurdles we face and the need for us to toil to obtain our livelihood. Rabbainu Bachaya now contends; the person whose commitment to G-d is absolute won't need the challenges to reach their spiritual potential. And, for such a person, G-d will provide -- sans the difficulties ordinary people will have to face! In this episode we will "Meet the Man" who doesn’t need to work or worry to Earn a Living as he is the ultimate Insider for whom Hashem cares and provides. In other words, we are faced with the hardships of finding sustenance because its beneficial for us. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Six , - ~ ! Having theologically resolved that Hashem orchestrates the challenges people face in obtaining their livelihood because its beneficial for them; serving to keep them on the straight and narrow --exceptionally righteous people should logically be exempt. Our faith-based Torah logic would further dictate that that wicked people should be most heavily burdened in pursuit of sustenance. Yet, notwithstanding the spiritual Zero Risk Factor, sometimes we see truly Pious People can’t seem to make ends meet, while their rebellious counterparts easily succeed, enjoying tranquil prosperity. Why does G-d make things happen that way?! In this Episode, Rabbainu Bachaya first acknowledges this painful reality, and moves to emphasize that it is an age-Old Question. A faith conundrum that has already been expressed by numerous prophets and continues to vex theologians: Why in Heaven do the Righteous Suffer, while the Wicked Prosper? The author contends by introducing a general assertion that doesn't quite answer the question yet provides important context. A faith-infused perspectives by virtue of which we can and must frame our view of things. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Seven , - ~ ! We've already resolved that from the standpoint of theological theory, exceptionally righteous people should be spared difficulties in obtaining their livelihood, yet acknowledged that, in fact, its not always the case. We asserted that this does not invalidate our faith-based conclusion because there are always other variables mixed into the equation, and the reasons remain varied and complex. As such, G-d's ways ultimately remain impossible for us to fathom. Notwithstanding, in this Episode, Rabbainu Bachaya will seek to provide some level of intellectual satisfaction to the age-old Faith Conundrum; Why in Heaven do Righteous People sometimes Suffer? Dipping into the deep inkwell of our inspired, sage tradition - the author introduces us to no less than five possible explanations that might be used to (at least theoretically) answer this burning question. These are, of course, not intended to (Heaven forfend) explain any specific person's suffering, but rather to provide an important and faith-infused, insightful context. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Eight , - ~ ! Have already addressed the Tests of Faith provoked by the suffering sometimes experienced by truly righteous individuals . And in kindred vein the extraordinary difficulties truly pious people, might on occasion, encounter in the pursuit of their Parnassa (livelihood). In the next two Episodes we will focus on the somewhat lesser vexing - yet nonetheless equally theologically challenging - success often enjoyed by the wicked! Rabbainu Bachaya provides a measure of intellectual satisfaction to this frustrating Faith Conundrum, by providing alternate possible rational for unearned prosperity. The most important takeaway isn't knowing why G-d does anything specific, but rather to prevent us from drawing myopic, wrongheaded conclusions like "choices of (good or) bad behaviour are inconsequential." Stitching a quilt work of Scriptural syntax enhanced by the embroidery of our Oral Tradition - the author will present multiple possibilities as to why that this might be the case. For example, G-d mighty purposefully give temporal material prosperity as a reward for righteousness once preformed, rather than granting lasting bliss in eternity. These explanations effectively provide a foundational faith-based context, while also serving to stimulate deeper discovery of Judaism's spiritual perspective on life. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Sixty-Nine , - ~ ! In this new Episode we continue to address theological challenge engendered by the Prosperity of the Wicked. Here, a final two possible rationales for the often-stunning success and goodness G-d seems to bestow upon bad people, are provided! Although, of course, Rabbainu Bachaya cannot answer specifics, and ultimately the Ways of G-d will ever remain a mystery to us -- he can and does provides a measure of intellectual comfort by presenting us with wider context and providing uplifting spiritual perspectives. Artfully weaving strands lifted from sacred scriptural verses and narratives syntax we will a new viewpoint that depicts each frame of time as part of a much larger continuum and incorporates the many dynamic interwoven realities that together form the tapestry, we call life. This fresh new insight proffered on the age-old theological conundrum of Why the Wicked Prosper will open our eyes to a generational goodness that may provide cause for G-d’s beneficence; almost like a Fossil Fuel that goes on to power Wicked Engines! These final explanations complete the picture of our faith-framed window into the deeper workings of our universe, allowing to move on in our quest to build our Bitachon and achieve the inner tranquility available only with true Trust in Hashem! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy , - ~ ! After addressing various theological conundrums, Rabbainu Bachaya now returns to the original thrust of his thesis; our moral mandate to invest the time and effort required to earn an honest living. He forcefully argues that one cannot, in good faith, rely on miracles or expect others to support him, as he chooses to focus personal spiritual pursuit. Yet, despite the requirement to make our best effort -- we must constantly remember that Hashem is our sole provider. Our efforts simply comprise the "vessel" for His bounty. The question, then is, how do we find the appropriate career to serve as that vessel? Responding to this very query, the author presents us with a trustworthy Bitachon-oriented strategy to help us best choose the worthiest occupation. The lucid Torah perspective of this venerated medieval Spiritual Master comprise a marvelous synergy of pure faith and pragmatism that are entirely compatible. Here we will learn to cultivate the proper Bitachon attitude towards achieving a livelihood, a mindset that will best position us to best achieve that objective. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-One , - ~ ! Since we are mandated by Hashem to make sincere efforts to seek out a livelihood and support our loved ones, it's only logical to assume that there is clear Torah instructions about how to do so. Yet, until this book was written no such source existed! Rabbeinu Bachaya provides us unprecedented insight and clarity on this important life-question: In the previous Episode, we've discovered a lucid and trustworthy faith-infused strategy to guide us in our quest of a worthy occupation. In this Episode we will continue to develop the thesis and sharpen the Bitachon perspective on employment. The author now draws a fascinating parallel between the Hunting Instincts of various animal’s that enable success in obtaining their sustenance. Should we be relying on our own instincts to sniff out the best way to turn a profit as well, or is it wiser to leave instinctive hunting prowess to Creatures in the Jungle, and choose to make careful and calculated decisions instead? Here we will discover what we should and should not be learning from the animal kingdom to achieve a livelihood, by best positioning ourselves to become recipients of G-d's magnanimous blessings. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Two , - ~ ! In prior episodes we learnt how to choose our careers or vocations. Now we will now learn how to view those very occupations, and even more importantly, the efforts we are required expend withing that framework to obtain our livelihoods. Rabbeinu Bachaya will insightfully address the importance of adopting the Right Attitude to the significant toil and effort invested in the work we do. And, ultimately, it's by cultivating the proper mindset we can best open the doors to success. In elevating our perspective, we are empowered to uniquely differentiate the Means from the End; learning to appreciate the value of the process or journey itself, rather than the achievement or arrival at destination! To properly understand the foundational element of this eye-opening thesis, we will need to explore the purpose of creation itself, and how the Original Sin radically altered that playing field of Human Endeavor and Destiny. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Three , - ~ ! Having sketched the parameters of the correct Mindset and Attitude we must develop regarding the appropriate efforts made towards obtaining our livelihoods, we now illustrate how it those very endeavours can and should be an embodiment of our rock solid Bitachon, Torah -True Trust. With remarkable clarity, Rabbeinu Bachaya will demonstrate how doing "Our Part" not only doesn't infringe on the imperative for us to Rely (totally and unequivocally) on G-d, but rather flows as a tributary of it! Despite it being somewhat counterintuitive, our investiture of wherewithal in pursuit of our livelihoods, doesn’t have to indicate a lack of faith. In fact, as already richly documented - by adopting the correct mindset - it's quite to the contrary. Conversely, self-reliant belief in your own Ability and Efforts will get in the way of your Soul's Faithfull Aspirations! Ultimately, this misguided approach might even impede or close doors to the success you seek. In elevating our perspective, we are enabled to nurture our inner spiritual reservoir of Emunah, notwithstanding the "real-world" efforts and activities we undertake. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

1:44:27
Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Four , ~ ! In seemingly cryptic syntax, Rabbeinu Bachaya begins to sketch the field of endeavour by contrasting the "Here and Now" of Olam Hazeh (our present terrestrial world or reality) with the spiritual "Future" reality of Olam Haba (the proverbial World to Come). To understand how and why the latter requires Trust rather than Faith we embark on a journey of discovery that uniquely illuminates the horizon of life's purpose! Moving on; we identify an array of Trust application in the arena of our daily lives and environmental interactions with practical endeavours and variegated relationships. The meticulous documentation of these unique categories will serve as fertile breeding grounds for actualization and application of our Bitachon. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Five , ~ ! The fourth chapter's opening lines focus on the endeavour that comprise our ephemeral lives. The differing dimensions will command varying degrees of Bitachon application, yet the common denominator is assumed to be a shared singular objective . Yet, surprisingly, in categorizing the activities of our temporal 'Here and Now' lives we seem to deemphasize the 'big picture' long-term goal of spiritual fulfilment, separating religious pursuit from pedestrian engagement. This ostensible distinction leads us into a deeper discovery of life's meaning. Ultimately, the idea of living purposefully, and being mission-driven applies to all dimensions; both those with immediate results as well as those with 'Future' realities still to come. Appropriately applied, Bitachon can lead us to successfully bridge Heaven and Earth, as our Trusting reliance on Hashem goes far beyond Matters pertaining to Prosperity. Here, we will learn to understand and appreciate why only by relying on G-d in all Matters -- of both Mundane and Mitzvah orientation -- can we successfully achieve inner joy, fulfilment, and lasting satisfaction.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Six , ~ ! We've already been taught about varying degrees of Trust required for our everyday realities; learning how Bitachon is to be uniquely applied in different situations. Rabbeinu Bachaya now seems to feel compelled to focus on the Trust Elements that apply towards our belief in The Afterlife. The big question is why? It should be self evident that the author's choice to shift into eternity, and address matters of Trust Pertaining to the World to Come isn't about ignoring the 'Here and Now.' Clearly the focus on Bitachon in eternity is important because it will directly impact the way we lead our terrestrial lives in this present world! Yet for all the force of this assumption brings to the table, it lacks accompanying rational. Why and how indeed does it make a difference to us?! Seeking clarification of this cryptic text will lead us into a journey of discovery of Heaven, Earth, and Existence itself! Ultimately, we will come to appreciate that the idea of living purposefully and being mission-driven applies to all dimensions; both those with immediate results as well as those with 'Future' realities still to come. Nurturing the right degree of heartfelt Bitachon will enable us to successfully synthesize body, soul, and existence. Because trusting reliance on Hashem goes far beyond matters pertaining to material success. Here, we will learn to understand and appreciate why only by relying on G-d in ALL matters -- including the most sublime, spiritual, and even futuristic in nature -- can we lived fully successfully achieve inner joy, fulfillment, and lasting satisfaction. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Seven , ~ ! We've already discovered that Bitachon applies uniquely in different dimensions of life, including our present behaviour that's influenced by our Trust and Faith in the future. Before moving forward with the detailed instructions of their application, Rabbeinu Bachaya seems to have felt compelled to formally classify all the categories, from the Ephemeral to the Eternal dimensions of life. The big question is why? To be sure, the neatly restated spectrum of reality in a systematic arrangement will form the structure for this rest of the chapter. Yet was this new list of seven specific categories necessary for Bitachon to be properly sub-divided. Why couldn't we simply be informed how and when ‘In G-d We Trust’ is a must without the fancy (and seemingly superfluous) table of contents? The supposition will be made that the organizational methodology is far more important than most might imagine. In fact, we will remonstrate that it comprises the foundational platform upon which the entire Trust thesis must rest! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

1:42:24
Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Eight , ~ ! We've already learnt that Bitachon shouldn't translate into an excuse for Inactivity. Simply stated: appropriately placing your full Trust in G-d does not exonerate you from giving it all you got. Each of us is always supposed to make every reasonable effort to succeed in life. To be sure though, at least superficially speaking --there does seem to be somewhat of dichotomy or even contradiction. Clearly, there's a need for us to create a synthesis and strike a healthy between our Bitachon and Hishtadlut. Striking that balance first requires achieving clarity about certain faith-based axioms about Trust. For example, are we meant to believe that Hashem’s manages everything, even when it seems that others control the outcomes? Ultimately, who is in control?! Although not the primary focus, we will also touch upon ideas of Predeterminism, Predestination, Theological Determinism and even Fatalism. What do we, as Torah Jews, believe in, and how do we squared it with the foundational Yiddishkiet idea of "Bechira" our G-d given "Freedom to Choose?" Finally, if our actions don't make the end results happen anyway -- why does G-d require us to make the effort altogether. Two previously introduced Torah ideas will delightfully illuminate these expanding theological horizons. This Episode is the Fifth segment of the Fourth Chapter of "The Gate of Trust;" comprising the 79th consecutive video of this ongoing series. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Seventy-Nine , ~ ! We've already established that having Bitachon doesn't preclude the necessity to invest every reasonable effort towards achieving success. Yes, Hashem is always in control. And yes we are required to do our part. Always. Lucidly illustrated in matter-of-fact brushstrokes: G-d grants sustenance, yet one must choose to eat to be nourished. G-d provides livelihood, yet everyone must expend the effort acquire an appropriate wardrobe and residence. This brings us to a very big question: how precisely we are meant to view concept of Preservation of Life from a Torah-True Trust Perspective. After all, if G-d predestines the outcomes anyway, can we choose to take risks and place ourselves in Danger? In other words, if we accept the idea that Death is pre-Destined -- from a Halachik perspective, is one permitted to take mortal risks or place themselves in Danger [unnecessarily]? And if not, at what point do we cross that formal threshold of legal endangerment? Clarifying this is key to striking the correct balance of Bitachon and Hishtadlut. The impact of these concepts is enormous, affecting everything from vaccinations to rollercoasters! We've got to take a hard look at the lengths we are (and aren’t!) required to go to 'Preserve Life' in safeguarding our health and physical well-being. The concept that our mortality is necessarily pre-ordained - or if you will, only possible if G-d wills it - also opens the door to a chilling yet critical conversation about Suicide, Doctor Assisted Death and what's referred to today as "End-of-Life" decisions from a Torah-True perspective. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty , ~ ! Having Trust means identifying with Hashem’s management of- and control of - who lives and who doesn’t. Does this mean that whoever commits suicide was going to die anyway? After all, since we believe that everything is in Hashem's hands and death is predestined, why can't we choose to take risks and place ourselves in danger? To be sure, this is a huge Trust issue, and clarifying it is of great importance because otherwise Bitachon can be used to justify downright sinful behavior. Yet, once the conversation has been opened, the ideas presented will certainly illuminate related timely issues like Suicide, Doctor Assisted Death and what's referred to today as "End-of-Life" decisions from a Torah-True perspective. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-One , ~ ! We've already learnt that exploiting the concept of Bitachon -- one's Trustful reliance on Hashem -- by using it to justify taking risks or placing oneself in danger is profoundly wrongheaded. Rabbeinu Bachaya depicts such reliance on G-d, it not as faithful or religious devotion -- but rather as gravely sinful, an act of outright rebellion. Maintaining that in event of mortal failure, a person would be held accountable for having caused their own demise a.k.a. Suicide. This, he then goes on to frame, is (in some respects) even worse than committing murder! He now brings positive proof for this perspective. Citing a biblical narrative, he conclusively demonstrates the importance of being cautious and doing our part to preserve life. This is clearly illustrated by a bold stand taken by a famous prophet, and Hashem's reaction to him: Shmuel HaNavi's reticence to follow explicit instructions -- due to personal safety concerns -- isn’t viewed as a lack of Trust. In fact, the loyal Seer's envisioning of future danger (and resultant reluctance to proceed) is depicted not as unfaithfulness, but instead as true expression of commitment and holy devotion -- entirely in keeping with the lofty ideals of Bitachon. If this is so, despite it concerning a direct command from G-d, how much more so regarding our obligation to be always extremely cautious in taking all reasonable steps to preserve our lives, and never to, Heaven forfend, endanger ourselves! Having exhaustively discussed the first possible outcome of endangering oneself, e.g., causing one's demise. We now conclude this lesson by focusing on the second possible outcome – miraculous deliverance. The author will demonstrate that even if it were to be the case, it would also constitute a grave mistake, and is simply wrong. As such, he conclusively rules out considering the possibility of endangering oneself -- due to a sense of certainty that G-d is always in control anyway. Bottom line: Bitachon should always give one a sense of tranquility and inner calm, yet it should never lead a person to take unnecessary risks! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Two , ~ ! We've already established that even a person who lives with perfect Bitachon, blissful reliance on Hashem, is required to take all reasonable precautions to safeguard and preserve life and do everything possible to avoid death. Moving onto the rest bodily welfare including physical health and emotional wellness, and other essentials like clothing, shelter, and our livelihoods. The question is, do we say same of the efforts to be invested in obtaining these basics as well, or is it sufficient here to minimally engage, "going through the motions," and yet ultimately leaving the successful outcome in G-d's hands? Rabbeinu Bachaya now incisively addresses this next area of Human Endeavour with an overarching Partnership Paradigm, teaching us all to learn how to live from the farmers! Having clearly and conclusively proved that Trust in Hashem doesn’t absolve us from doing our part to preserve life. The author now goes on to illustrate how the very same must apply to the mandated pursuit of our basic needs. Employing business language, the Sha'ar HaBitachon now delineates the terms of engagement: fulfill our obligations dutifully, as would any other honest, loyal partner! The certainty that G-d is always in control should always give one a sense of tranquility and inner calm, yet never lead a person to absolution of responsibility. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Three , ~ ! We've already established that perfect Bitachon means acknowledging that everything is from Hashem, and success is not the result of our efforts. which leads us into an interesting question: If ultimately G-d is the true provider, must we still thank the people who (seem to be) giving us the ability to earn our daily bread? Rabbeinu Bachaya identifies this as the next serious issue that must be addressed and clarified. Although we're meant to expend very reasonable effort, they must never be viewed as the source of Success. Here we will learn to cultivate the proper "Attitude of Gratitude" when we are privileged to see success come our way. We'll also explore the required balance of appreciation, when at once we continually offer our eternal gratefulness to Hashem, and not to human "Providers of Parnassa" yet still not rule out the need to be polite express thanks to individuals who help us. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Four , ~ ! Perfect Trust in Hashem means knowing that success is not the result of our efforts, but rather G-d's blessing. Yet we are always required to do invest appropriate and reasonable efforts. And once we've done our part to maintain a perfectly optimistic attitude -- before we've tasted or seen any of the anticipated success arrive. But what happens when the season ends and it's clear that our efforts, hard work and toil will be yielding no fruit. What is the Believer's Bitachon-powered response when well-intentioned efforts prove (at times inexplicably) unsuccessful? Rabbeinu Bachaya's seems odd. He drives home the point that, are livelihood may already have arrived elsewhere, and if Hashem desires, our Parnassa may just as easily soon materialize from an unexpected source. Urging us to keep our chin up and continue working diligently. We are to raise our eyes on High and place our Trust in the only true source of sustenance. Relying solely on Hashem who pays attention to those who place perfect Trust in Him will bring us the blessings we need. Yet isn't there also a possibility that the answer is NO, are there really any guarantees that we will always experience success?! Drawing on a range of classic and contemporary Torah-true sources this presentation will solidify and further clarify many important Bitachon Basics, most of which have already been touched upon in previous episodes of this foundational faith series. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Five , ~ ! To have Perfect Trust in Hashem is to know that all success comes entirely from G-d. Yet, we must nonetheless make every reasonable effort to [seemingly] achieve it. Rabbeinu Bachaya has already addressed the idea of pursuing a livelihood in business terms "as fulfilling obligations as an honest, loyal partner." Now he will focus on the pursuit of boosting wellness and medicinal healing. Here too, he will demonstrate that Trust in Hashem is fully compatible with the efforts we are expected to make towards facilitating wellness. There is no paradox in having full Bitachon and expending all possible efforts in preserving our health. Drawing on a range of classic and contemporary Torah-true sources we will learn how utilizing available medicines, therapy or treatments doesn't contradict Faith in the least. This despite the firm conviction that healing comes from Hashem alone! Furthermore, this presentation will illustrate how having Bitachon enables the medical assistance, as getting help from medical professionals is most appropriate, although relying on them isn’t.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Six , ’ ~ ! Be it resolved that we are supposed to Trust that Hashem alone is the source of sustenance. To believe with perfect conviction that our toil notwithstanding, it's G-d who grant us the success we achieve in procuring a livelihood. We've already established that despite this Torah truism, the Torah itself mandates a real and wholehearted investment of effort to [seemingly] achieve it. Maintaining Bitachon then means that we rely on Hashem to sustain us and know that our mandated efforts will only be as effective as the Creator chooses. Assuming we successfully internalize this measure of Faith, and fully Trust in G-d to provides our basic needs and staples. The next big issue requiring clarification is this: what if someone wants to enjoy living with more (then just a bare bones kind of) Parnassa/livelihood? Simply stated: if one craves extra comforts or luxuries in life (as most do), will the greater measure or intensity of effort make the Difference?! Rabbeinu Bachaya will now addressed this very question. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Seven , ~ ! We've already resolved that living one's life with true Trust necessarily engenders an inner calm and serenity. This is resultant of the certainty that Hashem will always provide appropriate sustenance. Having Bitachon is thusly defined as maintaining perfect conviction in, and fully rely on, G-d who will grant us the prosperity we need. Subscribing to this measure of Trust is to know that G-d to provides our basic needs. Yet, we all know of copious examples in which G-d provides certain individuals with far greater abundance than they could ever possibly require. The natural philosophical question to pose would then be: Why?! Simply stated, if each of G-d's creatures is supposed to receive what they require, why would G-d orchestrate things such that some receiving obscene excesses? Asking this question isn't merely academic. Nor is it merely a matter of philosophical pontification, exercise in theoretical theology. Perfecting our Bitachon will require a cogent explanation to why the wealth, gaining clarity, and choosing to do the right thing! This is precisely what Rabbeinu Bachaya now addresses. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Eight , ~ ! We've already resolved the true measure of Trust is to know and consider with absolute certainty that G-d will provide our basic needs. Yet, we have also noted that at times G-d will provide certain people far more than they need. In the previous Episode we learnt that the wealth serves as a huge "Nisayon" = test of one's inner spiritual courage, fortitude, and mettle. Choosing to do the right thing under these circumstances can indeed be a tremendous challenge! Rabbeinu Bachaya now continues to address and illustrate the parameters of this proverbial "Test of Affluence" and clarifies the mistakes people make due to lack of understanding. By spelling out the full Torah Truth about the income we earn and the wealth we might be fortunate to amass. Here we will learn how the Money Hashem provides us with isn’t always for the same purpose. This fascinating discovery about the differing Dimensions of our Earnings will open our eyes to the reason so many people make such big mistakes. Being privy to Torah truisms on Salaries, Savings and Holdings will provide us the clarity required to make the proper moral and righteous choices and pass our Test of Trust with flying colours -- positively transforming the way we choose to live our life! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-Nine , ~ ! In the previous Episodes we've learnt that giving us wealth is one of G-d's ways of testing our spiritual courage, fortitude, and mettle. Doing the right thing under circumstances of plenitude (rather than poverty) may well be the greatest challenge we face! Rabbeinu Bachaya now addresses the final frontier of the "Test of Wealth" by highlighting a huge attitudal mistake many make -- even when doing the right thing -- which sadly robs them of due merit and causes moral failure. For ultimately, possessing wealth is about the having the Gift to Give -- because being able to provide for others is a great privilege, not a burden! Those blessed with ability to assist others in need must view their affluence as a gift granted by the grace of G-d. From a Torah-true perspective, Hashem provides us the extra Earnings exclusively for that purpose. To think otherwise is to make a huge mistake. An error with grave consequences! Being privy to this information should provide us with clarity and grant us the resolve to not only do the right thing, but also do it in the right way. This is the way can we pass our Test of Faith and radically sublimate the way we live! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

QUEST FOR HONOR
QUEST FOR HONOR
May 9, 2022
1:22:49
Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Ninety , ~ ! The author has already framed wealth as a Divinely Designed Test of Faith that many fail, due to their misguided sense of realities. He will now contrast them with those wiser. By avoiding these errors of judgement, their conduct is appropriate. The spiritually intelligent successfully develop their Trust in Hashem to the point that they place greater stock in Hashem assurances than the stocks, savings or assets they already possess! This naturally segues into the next mistaken motivation to amass money: The anatomy of this different form of misguided pursuit of wealth is an insatiable craving and voracious appetite for honour! Far too many make this terrible mistake. Think that more money will bring an increase of dignity, yet in truth the riches merely afford them flattery, and never the authentic respect they covet. Good Deeds and many Mitzvot not material plenitude, bring one true esteem from others. Ultimately, only those Deserving of G-d’s Honour are truly honoured. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Ninety-One , ÉÉ ~ ! Faith deficiencies lead to a distorted sense of reality; a confusion about what really causes things to happen and how we can get the things we want. This is especially true when it comes to the honour and self-aggrandizement so many covet. Spiritually intuition enables you to successfully see part the façade. Nurturing your innate Trust in Hashem can enable you to avoid the misguided lavishing of honour of the wealthy and instead direct homage to Hashem! A virtuous life and spiritual affluence, not material plenitude, will bring one true esteem from others. Because when all is said and done not everything that attracts attention is necessarily honourable! Much of this is caused by the "Folly of the Populace" who seek to profit from flattery. Which itself is rooted in a lack of understanding that everything comes only from Hashem. Instead, they should be Honouring Hashem. Speaking of true causes, it is here that Rabbainu Bachaya chooses to address the wholly mistaken notion that the medium is the cause of success. For ultimately, it is all but a mindless mechanism or tool on the hands of the Creator! Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

1:36:32
Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Ninety-Two , / ~ ! We have learnt that a person should engage in work to meet his basic needs. If Hashem ordains wealth, one will achieve it without inordinate efforts or unethical conduct. Simply stated: Prosperity comes from G-d, not from our efforts. The previous episode concluded with the mistaken notion that the medium is the cause of success. The folly to think prosperity comes from means, rather than the cause, leads people to ignore the true source, our Creator, Hashem! The said confusion about the true cause, allows for an illusionary distortion of reality that leads people to praise the Means instead of the Cause. To effectively illustrate the nature of this folly, Rabbeinu Bachaya metaphorizes with a thirsty desert traveler drinks his fill of unsavory Bitter Water, without realizing that life's gifts are often experienced as a Bonanza. Having Trust in Hashem can help you realize that Profit doesn't need to come from Pain. Recognizing that the True and Singular Source of Success is Hashem allows you to experience His blessings and beneficence in a direct and straightforward manner. To be sure, the parable seems superfluous and even problematic. We delve deeply into the details to reveal some amazing insight that seems woven into the narrative! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 101 , - ~ ! In the previous Episode we focused on applying Bitachon when engaging in professional relationships. Learning how to ask for assistance, without losing dignity, and appreciating the difference between making requests vs relying on people. We concluded with the idea that thanking G-d for success, doesn’t preclude expressing thanks to people. The question is, why? After all, if we believe that G-d is the sole true source of all sustenance, what exactly does our benefactor deserve thanks for?! Rabbeinu Bachaya will show us how the answer can be found in the adage 'The Art of Good Business is Being a Good Middle Man!" In this Episode we will come to understand the deeper meaning of being G-d’s Emissary, as we are introduced to the Torah truism "Goodness comes through the Good." We will discover what we must be appreciative for, as well as tap into a Bitachon secret to getting what you want: coming to the realization that it has nothing to do with the person you expected to do it for you! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 102 , - ~ ! In the previous Episode we arrived at an understand of meaning of being G-d’s Emissary, as per the Torah truism "Goodness comes through the Good." Rabbeinu Bachaya now furthers this idea by showing us how one ‘Lives with Trust’ when in a position of employment or fulfilling a task on someone else's behalf. A person whose attituded is infused with the faithful spirit of Bitachon fulfills the job according to the best of their ability and knows that just as credit cannot be taken for success, neither can blame for failure be accepted either. The most important thing is to do your best. And if we make sincere efforts neither success nor failure should be attributed to us. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 103 , ~ ! In the previous Episodes we clarified how everyone is tasked with doing the best they can; always remembering that the results are ever in Hashem's hands. What matters is that efforts are sincere and according to the one's capabilities. In this new Episode we move from our employers to our competition, spelling out the Torah true approach to dealing with (even bitter) adversaries! How should a person infused with the faithful spirit of Bitachon try to act when faced with the unhealthy jealousy of real detractors and even sworn enemies. People who covet what yours and individuals who actually seek to harm? Can our Trust in Hashem become the foundation for a winning strategy that’ll allow us to transcend and even triumph? To be sure the faithful attitude and conviction-based answers provided here may appear daunting and even over-the-top. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 105 , - ~ ! In the previous Episodes we addressed confrontation and competition completing the section on physical wellness, prosperity and effectively engaging with others. Albeit an overly simplistic synopsis, it's fair to say that in all of the above: "we do our part and leave the rest in G-d’s Hands.” We now enter an entirely new arena of development and application of true Bitachon: the things that G-d’s purposefully leaves in Our Hands! This new segment entitled "Performance vs Trust" will address Trust in Hashem as it applies to the fulfillment of our personal Mitzvah duties. Part One of this segmented mini-series will clarify how Bechira (free choice) interacts with Bitachon (trust); rooted in the Torah truism that we are each granted personal responsibility to make moral decisions, choosing good over evil. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 106 , - ~ ! In the previous Episode we opened new arena of inquiry and understanding of how we are to develop and apply Bitachon to the things that G-d seemingly leaves in Our Hands! In setting out to clarify how and when we are expected to apply Trust principals to personal Mitzvah observance, it became clear that it’s a fraught endeavour. Now, to effectively articulate an appropriate Bitachon strategy, Rabbainu Bachaya chooses to first delineate and divide the primary components of our divinely endowed capabilities and responsibilities. This uniquely segmented string of episodes is entitled "Performance vs Trust" as it addresses Trust in Hashem per the mandated performance of personal Mitzvah duties. Part Two of this segmented mini-series further clarifies how Bechira (free choice) interacts with Bitachon (trust); rooted in the Torah truism that we are each granted personal responsibility to make moral decisions, choosing good over evil. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 107 , - ~ ! In the last Episodes we learnt about Bitachon vis a vis Mitzvah observance, by highlighting components of our divinely endowed Powers and Responsibilities. Part Three of this segregated mini-series "Performance vs Trust" continues to develop a foundational faith thesis via specific focus on divine remuneration and consequence. Attempting to replace Bechira (free choice) with Bitachon (trust) is misguided and indicative of a profoundly wrong perspective. In fact, it contradicts the Torah truism that we're given personal responsibility to make moral decisions, choosing good over evil When it comes to fulfilling our duty towards G-d, we must accept responsibility, not leave it in G-d's hands. Bitachon is only appropriate for end results beyond our control. This begs an important theological question: if all that’s expected of us is to choose, resolve, and act to the best of our ability, then why are we judged on performance? 1:17:00
Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 108 , - ~ ! In the previous Episodes we learnt that employing Bitachon to rely on Hashem to choose Mitzvah observance on our behalf is entirely wrongheaded. It would be a colossal misappropriation of Trust to shift responsibility to G-d, when has in effect made us responsible to find the inner resolve and appropriately follow that up by choosing to serve Hashem. This attempt to replace Bechira (free choice) with Bitachon (trust) is in effect foolish and illogical when He has given that very responsibility to us. In view of this Torah Truism, we now explore another Truth: the idea of Consequences, e. g. the promised Reward and Punishment for loyalty or disloyalty towards Hashem. Addressing both concepts of Reward and Retribution for our Righteousness or Rebellion, Rabbainu Bachaya clarifies our responsibilities to G-d, and the results we engender.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 109 , - ’ ~ ! In previous Episodes we learnt that shifting responsibility to G-d in our spiritual service equals Trust misappropriation, as He already tasked us that responsibility. This approach is in sharp contrast to the way we are supposed to apply Bitachon in all arenas of material pursuit. To further clarify this foundational distinction, the present Episode richly illustrates how not all Bitachon is created equal: Learn why Rabbeinu Bachaya felt compelled to detail why the attitude of Bitachon required for material affairs is radically different than the Trusting take we are expected to employ in pursuit of our true life's mission in serving Hashem. Despite the faith-fact that in both dimensions of life, we can only make our best efforts and must leave the rest in G-d’s hands. The case for a vast Trust Distinction is dramatically presented.

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 110 , - ~ ! In the previous Episodes we clarified this foundational distinction between exhibiting Trust in our spiritual service, vs applying Bitachon in our material pursuit. This will now be further augmented and more fully articulated. We will also return to more carefully examine the syntax and precise language employed by Rabbeinu Bachaya in delineating the reasons for a purposeful absence of Trust when fulfilling our duty by serving Hashem. The arguments for the significant departure from previously paved pathways of Bitachon are even more clearly spelled out in the Torah's promise of remuneration. Clearly, relying on Hashem and praying for direction should be limited to the areas of life where the road to success isn't clear. Regarding spiritual service, the road has already been mapped out and clear directions have already been given! The Thirty-Seventh segment of the Fourth Chapter of "Shaar HaBitachon" comprises the 110th consecutive video Episode of the ongoing series on Trust.

1:30:23
Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 111 , - ~ ! In the previous Episode we further developed the idea that relying on Hashem in areas our spiritual service is Trust misplaced. Such Bitachon applies to our material pursuit. Reliance on Hashem is appropriate for areas of life the direction can be unclear and it's easy to make the wrong turn, while in Torah and Mitzvot clear directions already exist! After a concluding illustration of the previously articulated "big Bitachon divide" we will move onto Rabbeinu Bachaya's secondary, distinct, and final clarification of the matter: In Material Matters what appears Good can easily turn out to be Bad. Shifting realities and circumstances are ever unforeseen. One can only Trust in Hashem and pray for direction. Yet, in Spiritual Service, the barometers of Good and Bad never change. Petitioning Heaven for guidance is thus a foolish path to take. Instead, here we must simply follow the clear directions we’ve been given, rather than trying to absolve ourselves of our divinely-imposed responsibilities by inappropriately relying on G-d. The Thirty-Eighth segment of the Fourth Chapter of "Shaar HaBitachon" has been generously sponsored by Rachel Pauline Kamin in memory of her beloved mother, Rivka bat Ze'ev. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 112 , - ~ ! Taking Charge, Learning to Let Go! In the previous Episodes we elaborated on the nature of misplaced Trust; namely relying on Hashem in areas of spiritual conduct where we've been told not to, but instead to take affirmative action. In fact, even praying for guidance, when clear directions have already been provided makes no sense. By definition, it equals inappropriate [or even abuse of] Bitachon. After learning how and what we are required to take charge to make Mitzvot happen, it’s time to learn about when it becomes appropriate to let go of the controls, to instead place unreserved Trust in Hashem. Because when it comes to final conclusions - even in spiritual matters - relying on G-d is fully correct. And alongside that reliance, prayer too, becomes most appropriate. Rabbeinu Bachaya will demonstrate the veracity of this nuanced application of Trust in an exquisitely woven tapestry of selected strands of scripture. This will prove that even in spiritual matters, the results forever remain in G-d’s hands, not ours!

Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 115 , - ~ ! Is about learning why applying Bitachon when involved in spiritual, moral and religious activities that directly involve others must necessarily be radically different! Having concluded the delineate how we are to apply Bitachon regarding spiritual matters of our own concern, we now move on to Part Five: Mitzvah action (or inaction) whose performance (or lack thereof) directly impacts others! Mitzvot, by definition are things we must choose to do. As such, relying on G-d (e.g., exhibiting Bitachon, rather is assuming personal responsibility) is simply wrongheaded. Trust can only be applied once we've already exhausted every possibility. Yet when our performance of the Mitzvah will necessarily benefit or deprive someone else as well, the variables are significantly altered as we cannot take responsibility for someone else's choices. May we just do our part, to the best of our ability, and then place unreserved Trust -- in essence relying on Hashem. Or must the intersection of different orbits force a faith distinction in the application of Trust and full reliance on Hashem? In this Episode we will clarify why a novel approach towards the application of Trust in such matters is required, before we move on to spell out the actual strategy in part two.! This is the forty-second study segment of the Fourth Chapter of "Shaar HaBitachon" and comprises the 115th consecutive video about Building Trust in G-d to Conquer Anxiety. Forever!

Having made the case for the differentiation in the previous Episode, now we’re ready to learn how to place our Trust in Hashem under these unique circumstances. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 117 , - ’ ~ ! Continuing to show us how to apply Trust in situations of Mitzvah activities and spiritual matters when others are involved! As we've learnt at length, balancing the spiritual values of Bitachon and Bechira is a tough act that becomes even more difficult when you aren't the only one in the arena. In the immediate previous Episode, we began to delineate when one may rinse their hand of responsibility and instead calmly rely of Hashem. Now we'll qualify; in addition to doing your utmost, it's also important to keep it to yourself. In this new Episode, we build on the already established principals of meaningfully applied Bitachon when engaged in spiritual activities that involve and impact others. Here, Rabbainu Bachaya adds a small but critical ingredient to the secret sauce. Fully understanding the pos and cons of concealing vs revealing our involvement is an important issue to work through if we are to successfully develop our Bitachon. Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 118 , - ~ ! Completing the thesis of applying Trust in situations of Mitzvah activities and spiritual matters (especially when there are others involved and anonymity isn’t an option) with a final important note on how we should view success at their fulfilment. Following clear guidance in effectively balancing Bitachon and Bechira – especially when you aren't the only active participant, and after having been instructed on the virtues of shunning publicity if that doesn’t impede the required investments of effort. In this new Episode, we take that a lot further: beyond not telling others Rabbainu Bachaya will insist that you shouldn’t be taking credit for “your” [hard earned?] success at all – even in your own mind! Thus, fully developed Bitachon in the arena of spiritual endeavor necessitates three critical components: 1) Reliance on Hashem for successful fulfilment of your spiritual activities 2) Seeking to do so anonymously if it doesn’t encroach on the required efforts. 3) Ultimately giving all the credit to whom it is truly due: Hashem! Rabbainu Bachaya further emphasizes that thinking or believing that we are responsible for our achievements can be a very costly mistake for us to make! Yet shouldn't insufficient intentions and attitudes be superseded by positive actions, and why does this have to get in the way of achieving Trust-based inner tranquility? To be sure, such a high level of humility it sounds a bit over the top. But Torah is never beyond the reach of every one of us... how are we to make sense of this all? Our marvelous journey of discovery will enable us to to appreciate the sweeping (and seemingly inordinate) demands the Sha’ar HaBitachon makes of us, and why its cuts to the very essence of the power and potency unleashed by Bitachon! We are now ready to move on to the sixth segment of Trust: the promised Reward for Mitzvot – which may be granted in This World, as well as the Next World! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 120 , - ~ ! Having already (albeit briefly) addressed the idea of Consequences and Remuneration in "This World," we shift our focus onto the concept of Punishment and Reward in the Afterlife, or Olam Haba (the "Next World"). In sharp contrast to the consequences described in the "Here and Now" when it comes to Gan Eden (Paradise, or Heaven) surprisingly enough the Torah doesn’t even mention it once! That's not an exaggeration, there literally isn't a single explicit reference in the entire Chumash of spiritual reward in the afterlife. Not even once! This fact, obviously begs the obvious question: Why the deafening silence on Heaven? In this Episode, Rabbainu Bachaya will first present us with the first of seven possible reasons for this glaring omission. Although we will not be directly addressing the actual subject of Bitachon, this issue requires full clarification before we are able to move on and properly discuss the next incredibly important Trust dimension. Chapter Four, Part Forty-eight features Bitachon Preamble III on what we were told about Heaven in one of the rare exceptions of the otherwise biblical blackout on Paradise and the proverbial World to Come! Entitled "WALKING WITH ANGELS" this Episode focuses on a most unusual explicit reference about the nature of spiritual reward in the afterlife. Here, Rabbainu Bachaya directs our attention to a notable exception to the rule. We will investigate this minority reportage on the future to see what it means, and with an eye to reconciling it with the otherwise glaring scriptural silence. For whom were these verses conveyed, and how can it be meaningful when we know that it's impossible for us to understand the spiritual dimensions of reality? Although, as previously, we won't directly address the subject of Bitachon, the content and concepts touched upon are fascinating, enlightening and even uplifting! Now, in our Forty-ninth Episode of Chapter Four we move onto the next reason. Entitled "FAITH OF OUR FATHERS," in Bitachon Preamble IV we return to the subject itself with an all-new approach to understanding Scriptural Silence on Paradise and the proverbial World to Come! In this Episode Rabbainu Bachaya directs our attention to inspiration and insight we received from our Faithful Fathers and Teachers of Old, which as it turns out provide us with a perfectly sensible cause for the scriptural silence on Olam Haba! Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode 123 , - ~ ! In Part One of "CHILDREN OF HEAVEN," we were introduced to a novel way to view the surprising Scriptural Silence on Paradise and the proverbial World to Come! Part Two of the same title comprises the fifty-first consecutive segment of chapter four. Inasmuch as it features the continuation of the third reason, it takes its place in the series as Bitachon Preamble VI. To explain the silence on Heavenly Rewards -- Rabbainu Bachaya presented a fascinating supposition that suggested G-d had no choice to the feeblemindedness of the newly birthed nation of erstwhile slaves. Yet while the perspective was certainly creative, and thought provoking, this explanation on the Biblical Blackout on Heaven left us hungry and wanting. Were our early ancestors really such fools, or is the scriptural silence on Olam Haba subtly conveying a critically important message? Imagine if this seeming omission is an inclusion of the most powerful teaching on how to effectively educate, influence, and inspire future generations! That is to say; not only insightful, but also highly relevant and pragmatic! Although, as previously, we won't directly address the subject of Bitachon, the content and concepts touched upon are fascinating, enlightening and even uplifting! Upon full clarification of this important issue, we will eventually return the original subject: applying Trust to this specific dimension of Yiddishkeits life and values.
