Sha’ar HaBitachon - Episode Eighty-One , ~ ! We've already learnt that exploiting the concept of Bitachon -- one's Trustful reliance on Hashem -- by using it to justify taking risks or placing oneself in danger is profoundly wrongheaded. Rabbeinu Bachaya depicts such reliance on G-d, it not as faithful or religious devotion -- but rather as gravely sinful, an act of outright rebellion. Maintaining that in event of mortal failure, a person would be held accountable for having caused their own demise a.k.a. Suicide. This, he then goes on to frame, is (in some respects) even worse than committing murder! He now brings positive proof for this perspective. Citing a biblical narrative, he conclusively demonstrates the importance of being cautious and doing our part to preserve life. This is clearly illustrated by a bold stand taken by a famous prophet, and Hashem's reaction to him: Shmuel HaNavi's reticence to follow explicit instructions -- due to personal safety concerns -- isn’t viewed as a lack of Trust. In fact, the loyal Seer's envisioning of future danger (and resultant reluctance to proceed) is depicted not as unfaithfulness, but instead as true expression of commitment and holy devotion -- entirely in keeping with the lofty ideals of Bitachon. If this is so, despite it concerning a direct command from G-d, how much more so regarding our obligation to be always extremely cautious in taking all reasonable steps to preserve our lives, and never to, Heaven forfend, endanger ourselves! Having exhaustively discussed the first possible outcome of endangering oneself, e.g., causing one's demise. We now conclude this lesson by focusing on the second possible outcome – miraculous deliverance. The author will demonstrate that even if it were to be the case, it would also constitute a grave mistake, and is simply wrong. As such, he conclusively rules out considering the possibility of endangering oneself -- due to a sense of certainty that G-d is always in control anyway. We've already established that even a person who lives with perfect Bitachon, blissful reliance on Hashem, is required to take all reasonable precautions to safeguard and preserve life and do everything possible to avoid death. Moving onto the rest bodily welfare including physical health and emotional wellness, and other essentials like clothing, shelter, and our livelihoods. The question is, do we say same of the efforts to be invested in obtaining these basics as well, or is it sufficient here to minimally engage, "going through the motions," and yet ultimately leaving the successful outcome in G-d's hands? Rabbeinu Bachaya now incisively addresses this next area of Human Endeavour with an overarching Partnership Paradigm, teaching us all to learn how to live from the farmers! Having clearly and conclusively proved that Trust in Hashem doesn’t absolve us from doing our part to preserve life. We've already established that perfect Bitachon means acknowledging that everything is from Hashem, and success is not the result of our efforts. which leads us into an interesting question: If ultimately G-d is the true provider, must we still thank the people who (seem to be) giving us the ability to earn our daily bread? Rabbeinu Bachaya identifies this as the next serious issue that must be addressed and clarified. Although we're meant to expend very reasonable effort, they must never be viewed as the source of Success. Yet we are always required to do invest appropriate and reasonable efforts. And once we've done our part to maintain a perfectly optimistic attitude -- before we've tasted or seen any of the anticipated success arrive. But what happens when the season ends and it's clear that our efforts, hard work and toil will be yielding no fruit. What is the Believer's Bitachon-powered response when well-intentioned efforts prove (at times inexplicably) unsuccessful? Rabbeinu Bachaya's seems odd. He drives home the point that, are livelihood may already have arrived elsewhere, and if Hashem desires, our Parnassa may just as easily soon materialize from an unexpected source. Yet isn't there also a possibility that the answer is NO, are there really any guarantees that we will always experience success?!
