The Purim story reminds us that everything, even events beyond our control, ultimately happens with Hashem's will. As we learn from the Vilna Gaon, it was no coincidence that Achashverosh and his kingdom uprooted themselves to settle in Shushan - the same small town where a pious Jew named Mordechai lived. This was part of Hashem's plan to save the Jewish people from Haman's genocidal plot. This reminder is especially poignant as we approach Purim. We may not always understand what is happening in our lives or how one event seemingly unrelated to another could come together for a greater purpose - yet this is precisely the point of Purim: to recognize and trust in Hashem and to understand that God alone is orchestrating our lives. We learn how queen Esther prepared for her significant moment in the town of Shushan, as is told in the Purim story, and to commemorate her great act, we too fast. The Purim story is a tale of bravery, faith, and resilience. Queen Esther was willing to risk it all to save her Jewish people from being annihilated by the wicked Haman. The whole Purim story is found in the Megillah, named after Queen Esther, a scroll read on purim each year. We learn how Esther approached the King and risked her life for her people despite knowing what could happen if she failed. The brave actions of this Jewish heroine should inspire us to stand up for Hahsdem and what is genuinely right no matter what obstacles come our way. The Jewish holiday of Purim is among the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar. It is a time to celebrate and recognize the miraculous victory of the Jews over their enemies in ancient Persia, as told in the Purim story in the book of Esther within the Torah. One key aspect of celebrating this holiday is drinking. Alcohol consumption is traditionally considered an essential part of many religious festivals, including Purim. The Talmud states it is a mitzvah (commandment) to get so intoxicated on Purim night that one cannot tell 'cursed be Haman' from 'blessed be Mordechai.' This suggests that drinking alcohol should not be considered immoral or forbidden on this holy day. In addition, drinking alcohol is seen as a way of remembering the ancient miracle and expressing joy in the present day. So, raising a glass or two on Purim night is customary to celebrate this memorable holiday! Through this parsha, we learn that even if we stray from our path, there is always hope that we can be forgiven and given a second chance. We must never give up on ourselves but dare to make positive life changes. This parsha reminds us that we should always strive for righteousness and shun evil, no matter what temptations come our way. This nation opposed G-d's will. In this short Dvar Torah, we explore why Amalek is so bad. The Haftorah then recounts the story of Shaul Hamelech, who was instructed to battle against Amalek but failed in his mission when he spared a part of their nation. His mistake was ultimately deemed an act of rebellion, given that G-d had clearly stated they must be eliminated. Finally, we explore the message of determination to eradicate evil. Attending a funeral can be an emotionally difficult experience, but it is essential to honor the deceased and begin the mourning process. According to Jewish tradition, witnessing the day of death is necessary as part of this process. The purpose of attending a funeral is not only to provide comfort and solace for grieving but also to provide an opportunity for reflection on our own mortality and spiritual growth. The Talmud (Moed Katan 27a) teaches that there should be no separation between people in life or death. We must come together at a time of sadness in solidarity with our fellow Jews and reflect on how we can use this moment to grow spiritually. In addition, gathering together during a person's funeral is a way to provide honor and respect for the deceased as they are laid to rest. Attending funerals also reminds us of our mortality, encouraging us to make the most of every moment on earth. As King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 7:2, "It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; For that is the end of all mankind." By attending a funeral, we can reflect upon our lives and remind ourselves that life is fleeting and should not be taken for granted. His selfless acts earned him the respect and admiration of those around him, and his story has been passed down through generations as an example of how to live a life filled with kindness. Rabbi Herman's dedication to helping others was one of the most inspiring examples of charity and generosity we can learn from today. The Jewish people could have avoided much difficulty by heeding Mordechai's advice and not attending the party. This same lesson can be applied today, for we all need guidance from knowledgeable individuals in our lives, and this ensures that we are taking the best course of action. A Rabbi or Rebbe can provide valuable insight into difficult situations, helping us make informed decisions that minimize risks and maximize rewards. By following their wisdom, we may avoid many potential calamities. By listening to wise advice from those we trust, we can rest assured that we are taking steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm. The Jewish people did not heed Mordechai's warnings, but we must not make the same mistake. Let us strive to learn from their example and continually seek trustworthy guidance on how to best prepare for whatever life throws our way. No matter what challenges come our way, when we follow wise counsel and remain vigilant in safeguarding ourselves and our loved ones, no amount of adversity can stand in our way. Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the Israelites' liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is celebrated for seven days, with the first and last days being special holidays. On the first night of Passover, Jews gather around the table to celebrate freedom and tell the story of their ancestors' exodus from Egypt. The first night of Pesach is an integral part of the holiday. During this time, families come together to share a meal known as a Seder. This meal includes traditional foods such as matzah (unleavened bread), charoset (a sweet mixture of apples and nuts), and maror (bitter herbs). As they eat, family members take turns reading from a book called the Haggadah which tells the story of how God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. At each stage of the Seder, special rituals are performed to remind us of our ancestors' journey out of Egypt. For example, during karpas (the vegetable course), we dip parsley into salt water to symbolize tears shed by those enslaved in Egypt. The night of Pesach is about remembering our past and looking forward to our future. We use this time to reflect on what it means to be free and how we can work towards achieving freedom today. We also make sure that everyone at our table feels included by inviting guests so they can learn more about our culture and history. The night of Pesach is an opportunity to unite as a community and celebrate freedom while reflecting on our shared history as Jews. It was the night of Pesach, and the family had gathered together for their Seder. The house was filled with laughter and conversations as aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends arrived to celebrate. As they took their places at the table, they began to sing songs of gratitude and praise while they feasted on matzo ball soup, brisket, and kugel. The youngest grandchild proudly read out the four Hebrew questions enthusiastically. Everyone smiled, marveling at his recitation. The youngest then proceeded to open up the Haggadah as all eyes fixed upon him. He turned the pages slowly and read each statement aloud that represented a part of the great Exodus story. Then, family members around the table shared stories of their ancestors before them and how those individuals had gone through difficult times in life. It was a fun-filled night enjoyed by all involved as every family member retired contentedly, knowing that Pesach's timeless message had been passed down for generations. Making the Pesach Seder fun and interactive is integral to connecting with our Jewish heritage and passing on traditions to future generations. The seder plate, which traditionally contains a roasted shank bone, matzah, maror (bitter herbs), charoses (a mixture of fruit and nuts), karpas (a vegetable, usually onion or parsley), and salt water, can be used to create exciting activities for the whole family! One fun activity that can be done with the seder plate is a "quest"—have each person at the table take turns finding an item on the seder plate. Whoever finds it first will get to tell everyone what it means and why we use it during the seder. You can also ask participants to act out a scene from the Passover story, with each person assigned a different role as they tell the story of our Exodus from Egypt. In addition to involving everyone in activities, you can make your seder more interactive by creating a "storyboard" around the outside of the table. Place pictures and symbols that remind us of our heritage and its traditions so that while eating and drinking at the table, you can still remember why we celebrate this memorable holiday. Finally, spicing up your Pesach Seder doesn't have to stop at activities—you can add a touch of fun by incorporating food into the festivities! Some ideas for creative dishes include matzah lasagna, potato kugel, macaroons, and more. Not only will these traditional dishes taste great, but they will also keep everyone engaged as we remember the story of our deliverance from Egypt. Making the Pesach Seder fun and interactive doesn't have to be complicated. With a few simple ideas and some creativity, you can create memories that last well beyond this holiday season—and remind us of why we celebrate it in the first place!
