In episode fourteen of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches B’Mikra — “with the written law” (the Torah, or Tanakh). The foundation of a successful and fulfilling life is following instructions, just as every product we buy comes with a manual. The Torah is God’s owner’s manual for life — the blueprint and map that shows us how to live, raise children, build relationships, conduct ourselves ethically, and maximize every moment. Rabbi Wolbe stresses that financial success (e.g., billionaires like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos) does not equal success in marriage, fatherhood, or character. The Torah contains all morals, ethics, and proper conduct. Genesis is not merely stories but a guide to life. The written Torah consists of the 24 books of Tanakh: the Five Books of Moses (Chumash), the eight books of the Prophets (Nevi’im), and the eleven books of Writings (Ketuvim). It tells us what to do, while the Oral Torah (the next way) explains how. He highlights the uniqueness of the Torah: it was given through a public revelation to over three million people at Mount Sinai — an event that could not be fabricated, as every detail would have been scrutinized by a questioning people. The Torah is not a history book, law book, or fairy tale; it is the book of life. Practical advice includes reading the entire Tanakh with an authentic Jewish translation, asking questions, organizing and reviewing the material, correlating it with current events, updating our understanding as we mature, and constantly upgrading our knowledge (the first paragraph of Shema has 48 words corresponding to these 48 ways). Rabbi Wolbe reminds us that a Jew without Torah is like a fish without water, and that “Adam” (human) comes from “Adama” (earth) and “Adameh” (to emulate) — our goal is to become God-like by immersing in Torah. We judge others (and situations) far too quickly based on incomplete information. Rabbi Wolbe explains that Marbeh Yeshiva, Marbeh Chachma — the more you deliberate, the more wisdom you acquire. Way 7: Humility Is Not Weakness – The Torah’s Secret to Real Greatness [Jewish Inspiration]

In episode seven of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches Anava — “with humility.” He clarifies that true humility is not self-deprecation, staying silent, or pretending to be small. Instead, humility means recognizing that everything we have — talents, accomplishments, successes — is a gift from Hashem. We can (and should) feel proud of our achievements, but always with the awareness that the credit ultimately belongs to God who granted us the abilities. Rabbi Wolbe explains that people are not judged against the average percentile of others. If God gave someone exceptional gifts, they are held to a much higher standard. Great Torah sages always felt inadequate precisely because they recognized how much more they could have accomplished with the extraordinary tools they were given. Humility allows us to learn from everyone (even younger or “smaller” people), accept criticism, and let others shine without feeling threatened. Arrogance “sucks the air out of the room,” while humility creates space for growth, prayer, and real relationships. Additional powerful points: Moses received the Torah and the five books are named after him precisely because of his humility — he gave full credit to Hashem. Mount Sinai was chosen because it was the humblest mountain, and the Torah was given in the desert (midbar) to teach that we must make ourselves humble like the desert. God Himself showed humility by saying “Na’aseh Adam” (“Let us make man”), consulting the angels. Humility is required even to believe in God, because it acknowledges something greater than oneself. Rabbi Wolbe shares inspiring real-life examples: Mariano Rivera crediting God for his record-breaking pitching career; the two Temple families (one shared their baking secret, the other hoarded their singing gift and lost it); Senator Joe Lieberman’s wife humorously reminding him he would always be “vice president” in their home; Rav Moshe Feinstein personally answering a woman’s weekly candle-lighting question for 25 years; and his great-aunt Bambi (who delivered over 40,000 babies) humbly listening to a young nursing student’s instructions. He also recounts how his grandfather refused the seat of honor at a siyum, choosing instead to sit by the door to support his grandson. Rabbi Wolbe stresses that we must guard our environment carefully because negative influences inevitably affect us. He shares a childhood story of using foul language after playing in a public schoolyard and how his parents immediately moved to protect the family’s spiritual environment. Shlissel Challah: The Key to Parnasa & Opening Our Hearts After Pesach [Short & Sweet Inspiration]

In this short, uplifting episode for the first Shabbos after Pesach, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains the age-old beautiful Ashkenazi custom of baking Shlissel Challah—challah in the shape of a key, with sesame seeds forming a key, or with an actual (clean, foil-wrapped) key baked inside. This age-old minhag (mentioned over 1,000 years ago) is a segulah for parnassah (livelihood) and blessing. Multiple reasons are given: Pesach is when the world is judged for grains (Mishnah Rosh Hashanah), while Rosh Hashanah determines each individual's share; the manna stopped falling right after Pesach, shifting responsibility to our own efforts; the key symbolizes opening the gates of heaven (which "close" after Pesach) or opening our hearts in teshuvah ("open for Me the size of a needle's eye, and I will open wide"). Other explanations connect it to the matzah of Pesach instilling yirat shamayim (fear of Heaven), which is like a key—Torah without yirat shamayim is like having the inner key but not the outer one (Talmud). Way 8: Happiness Is an Attitude, Not a Destination [Jewish Inspiration]

Way 8: Happiness Is an Attitude, Not a Destination

Way 7: Humility Is Not Weakness – The Torah’s Secret to Real Greatness

In episode seven of the 48 Ways series during the Omer, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches Anava — “with humility.” He clarifies that true humility is not self-deprecation, staying silent, or pretending to be small. Instead, humility means recognizing that everything we have — talents, accomplishments, successes — is a gift from Hashem. We can (and should) feel proud of our achievements, but always with the awareness that the credit ultimately belongs to God who granted us the abilities. Rabbi Wolbe explains that people are not judged against the average percentile of others. If God gave someone exceptional gifts, they are held to a much higher standard. Great Torah sages always felt inadequate precisely because they recognized how much more they could have accomplished with the extraordinary tools they were given. Humility allows us to learn from everyone (even younger or “smaller” people), accept criticism, and let others shine without feeling threatened. Arrogance “sucks the air out of the room,” while humility creates space for growth, prayer, and real relationships. Additional powerful points: Moses received the Torah and the five books are named after him precisely because of his humility — he gave full credit to Hashem. Mount Sinai was chosen because it was the humblest mountain, and the Torah was given in the desert (midbar) to teach that we must make ourselves humble like the desert. God Himself showed humility by saying “Na’aseh Adam” (“Let us make man”), consulting the angels. Humility is required even to believe in God, because it acknowledges something greater than oneself. A righteous man tests two suitors for his daughter by staging a quarrel and asking their judgment: one flatters to win favor, the other honestly rebukes—the honest one is chosen, as flattery corrupts trust. Leaders (Parnas/community head, Dayan/judge, Gabbai Tzedakah/charity distributor) must never flatter, lest the community follows evil paths, litigants feel silenced, or charity goes undeservedly—flattery undermines justice and reproof. The Unseen Curtain: Hashem's Perspective vs. Ours from Vayakheil-Pekudei

In this quick but powerful shiur on Vayakhel-Pekudei, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe shares an insight from Rabbi Yaakov Nagel (Senior Rabbi of Heimish of Houston) about the unique double-sided drapes (Yeri'ot) in the Mishkan. While most embroidery (Ma'asei Choshev) was identical on both sides, one special curtain at the entrance to the Kodesh HaKodashim (Holy of Holies) featured a completely different image on the inner side—yet no human ever saw it. The Kohen Gadol entered once a year, performed the Yom Kippur service, and exited backward, never turning to view the inner curtain. So why invest in an unseen design? Rabbi Wolbe explains: It teaches that Hashem's perspective often differs radically from ours. We may undervalue a mitzvah (thinking it's "small") or ourselves (feeling unworthy or limited), but Hashem sees infinite worth. A simple act—holding back lashon hara, a quiet prayer, a moment of restraint—may earn unimaginable reward in heaven. Conversely, we sometimes overestimate our deeds. The hidden curtain reminds us: some mitzvot and personal potentials are visible only to Hashem, whose valuation transcends human sight. This applies especially to parenting: parents must reflect children's true greatness and potential (like the mirrors of last week's shiur), seeing beyond their self-doubt to ignite confidence and growth—just as Hashem sees our hidden light. The Unseen Curtain: Hashem's Perspective vs. Ours from Vayakheil-Pekudei

In this quick but powerful shiur on Vayakhel-Pekudei, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe shares an insight from Rabbi Yaakov Nagel (Senior Rabbi of Heimish of Houston) about the unique double-sided drapes (Yeri'ot) in the Mishkan. While most embroidery (Ma'asei Choshev) was identical on both sides, one special curtain at the entrance to the Kodesh HaKodashim (Holy of Holies) featured a completely different image on the inner side—yet no human ever saw it. The Kohen Gadol entered once a year, performed the Yom Kippur service, and exited backward, never turning to view the inner curtain. So why invest in an unseen design? Rabbi Wolbe explains: It teaches that Hashem's perspective often differs radically from ours. We may undervalue a mitzvah (thinking it's "small") or ourselves (feeling unworthy or limited), but Hashem sees infinite worth. A simple act—holding back lashon hara, a quiet prayer, a moment of restraint—may earn unimaginable reward in heaven. Conversely, we sometimes overestimate our deeds. The hidden curtain reminds us: some mitzvot and personal potentials are visible only to Hashem, whose valuation transcends human sight. This applies especially to parenting: parents must reflect children's true greatness and potential (like the mirrors of last week's shiur), seeing beyond their self-doubt to ignite confidence and growth—just as Hashem sees our hidden light. Rabbi Epstein uncovers a reading of Sarai's complaint that most people miss entirely. When she says "the outrage against me is due to you," she is making a specific legal and spiritual charge rooted in what Avram prayed for. The episode also examines what happens when Hagar runs and an angel finds her at a desert spring. The angel asks her two questions: where have you come from, and where are you going? Hagar can only answer the first one. Rabbi Epstein sits with that for a while, because it turns out the questions are less about geography than about whether any of us actually know the answer to the second one. And woven through all of it: why do the matriarchs have so much difficulty having children? The Talmud's answer is both surprising and consoling, and it lands differently when you hear it in the context of this story.

The Parsha describes the High Priest's vestments twice mentioning the names of the 12 tribes: once on the Choshen (breastplate) with individual stones over the heart, and again on the Avnei Shoham (shoulder stones of remembrance). Why the duplication? The sages explain it as a model for every Jew, especially the Kohen: the heart must first hold deep love and concern for every fellow Jew (as exemplified by Aharon, the ultimate lover and pursuer of peace – ohev shalom v'rodef shalom), feeling their pain and joy internally. But love alone is insufficient; the shoulders must carry their burdens – sharing grief, challenges, and responsibilities as one's own ("you're my brother, you ain't heavy"). Rabbi Wolbe illustrates this with stories: Aharon reconciling disputants through empathy; Reb Chaim Shmulevitz's Yom Kippur teaching that one who hasn't lost sleep over the Jewish people's spiritual/physical plight has no business praying; feeling Hashem's "pain" over estranged children; carrying joy (dancing alone for a distant student's wedding); and practical empathy (e.g., yellow ribbons for hostages as reminders to feel others' pain). He stresses avoiding desensitization in a news-saturated world, pursuing peace without quarrels (a Kohen in conflict couldn't serve), and living beyond oneself – feeling others' burdens while maintaining joy (as the Shechinah rests only in simcha). The episode ends with a discussion on positive communication (e.g., the Still Face experiment, praise boosting performance) and responding to children's needs through listening rather than waiting for tantrums.
