Yahrtzeit Yomi #866!! יט כסלו (Shabbos) Maggid of Mezeritch רב דֹּב בֶּער ב״ר אברהם המגיד מִמֶּזְרִיטְש (1704 - 1772) ----------------------------------- Shabbos, 19 Kislev, marked the 251st Yahrtzeit of Harav Dov Ber, the Maggid of Mezeritch ZTL (1704 - 1772). Rav Dov Ber was the foremost disciple of, and ultimate successor to, the founder of Chassidus, Rav Yisroel Ba’al Shem Tov. A brilliant child prodigy, he went to Lvov to learn under the great Pnei Yehoshua, while still a youngster. After the Ba’al Shem Tov’s petirah, the authority of Rav Dov Ber was recognized by one and all. Among his illustrious talmidim were: the Rebbe Reb Shmuel Shmelke HaLevi Horowitz, and his brother, Reb Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, the Ba’al Hafla’ah; the Rebbe Reb Zushya and his brother, Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk; Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev; Rav Nachum of Chernobyl; and the Ba’al Hatanya, Rav Shneur Zalman of Liadi. I would like to share a wondrous illustration of the great brilliance of Rav Dov Ber, which he exhibited as a mere child. When Dov Ber was a young boy in Yeshiva, the Rebbi was teaching the talmidim the dispute between Rashi and Tosafos regarding the correct conduct for one who finds himself in the middle of his “silent shemoneh esrei” (עמידה), when the chazzan is reciting קדושה: Rashi (סוכה לח: ד״ה הוא אומר ברוך הבא) is of the opinion that he should stop davening and listen to the chazzan, and it will be considered as if he himself recited the words (שומע כעונה). Tosafos (ברכות כא: ד״ה עד) object to Rashi’s statement, because if his listening is considered as though he himself actually said the words, that would constitute an interruption in his personal shemona esrei!! (״אדרבה - אי שומע כעונה, הוי הפסקה אם שותק!!״) Young Dov Ber proposed an ingenious answer to Tosafos’ question: “Chazal teach us that when it comes to Mitzvos, Hashem considers a thought like it’s an actual deed, but when it comes to Aveiros, He does not - ״מחשבה טובה הקב״ה מצרפה למעשה, וכו׳״ (See Kiddushin 40a). “So”, said little Dov Ber - “as regards the Mitzvah of saying Kedusha, it is considered as if he said the words, as that is a Mitzvah. But as regards the sin of interrupting his Shemoneh Esrei, since that act is an Aveirah, it would not be considered as an interruption!!” (עיין משנה ברורה סימן קד, ס״ק כח) (NOTE: Ultimately, Tosafos end up agreeing with Rashi in practice, and that is the how the Shulchan Aruch paskens in 104:7 - ״אינו פוסק לא לקדיש ולא לקדשה, אלא ישתק ויכון למה שאומר שליח צבור ויהא כעונה״!!) זכותו יגן עלינו!! -------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #849!! ז כסלו Death of King Herod יום שמת הורדוס (מגילת תענית פרק ט) ------------------------------------------------------------- Shalom u’vracha Rabboisai!! Ah freilichin ז כסלו!! In light of today’s Yahrtzeit Yomi edition, I am sharing a very illuminating and insightful “Q&A” from HaRav Avigdor Miller ZTL. His approach is in complete agreement what we presented today from the Maharsha (as the editor points out at the bottom of the text)!! I found it very encouraging to learn that our Rebbi ZTL approached the topic in the same way as we had presented, and I thought that the oilam would likewise find it enlightening. זייט געבענשט!! ------------------------------------------------------------- Rav Avigdor Miller on Why We Say Half-Hallel on Pesach Q: On the last days of Pesach we say only Half-Hallel. Isn’t that because of מעשה ידי טובעים בים ואתם אומרים שירה (Megillah 10b)? Aren’t we sad that Egyptians were drowned and we therefore don’t want to sing to Hashem?  A: The answer is no, it’s not because of this; it’s not because of מעשה ידי טובעים בים. There is no gemara that says that this is the reason for not saying Hallel on Pesach. I know that it’s frequently quoted and people think it’s a Gemara, but there is no Gemara to that effect. And even if you show me a medrash that says it, you’re misinterpreting the medrash. The reason why we say only half-Hallel is because there was a takana that on the first day of Pesach – for us the first two days – that we have to say Hallel. There is no reason, no takana, to say Hallel on the other days. The other days it was only a minhag to say Hallel. And therefore, because there was no takana, they couldn’t say the whole Hallel, so they said half-Hallel. Half-Hallel is only a minhag –  the takana was only the first day. Now, on Sukkos the takana was to say Hallel every day, because on Sukkos every day there was a different korban tzibur brought in the Beis Hamikdash. Because every day was something new and special, like its own Yom Tov, so each day was also made special with the whole Hallel. Pesach, however, has the same korban every day and that’s the difference, that’s why we say only half-Hallel on all the other days of Pesach. But this reason that you give, you heard it from others, and I’ve heard it as well many times, but there is no real talmudic authority that says that. Maybe in some sefer it’s written, but we have a right to discount it. TAPE #26 (April 1973) (Additional sources shared on WhatsApp group) Editor’s Note: In private, the Rav told talmidim that although the reason of “maaseh yadai toiv’im ba’yam” is quoted by the Beis Yosef, the Mishna Berura and others, it is only a drush and the actual reason is the one brought in the gemara in Arachin. The Maharsha (Sanhedrin 39b) clearly says that the gemara in Arachin rejects the angel paradigm as the reason for half-Hallel. The Aruch Hashulchan (490:1) also makes note of the the fact that the actual reason is the Talmudic one as does his son in his Torah Temimah (Shemos 14:20) and many others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Yahrtzeit Yomi #838!! פרשת חיי שרה Sarah Imeinu ״עלה במרחשון, זכות שרה אמנו שבו מתה״ (אסתר רבה ז:יא) RAV CHAIM BRISKER’S הספד ON SARAH IMEINU!! The Medrash (אסתר רבה ז:יא) tells us that when Haman drew lots to determine which date would be most auspicious to carry out his diabolical plan of genocide, he found that each month had some form of merit which would protect the Jewish people. When the lottery fell to the month of מרחשון, the Medrash says: ״זכות שרה אמנו שבו מתה״ - “The merit of שרה אמנו protected us, because she died in that month”. (Strangely, the conclusion of that same medrash is that when the lottery fell to the month of אדר, Haman rejoiced, because: ״באדר מת משה רבן״ - “Moshe Rabbeinu died in אדר”. This seems extremely perplexing - why the death of שרה אמנו is a source of merit for the Jewish people in the month of מרחשון (as Haman himself acknowledged), but the death of ‏משה רבנו is a bad omen for the Jewish people (or at least it seemed that way to Haman) in the month of אדר…. (עיין במהרז״ו, רד״ל, ויפה ענף שם, ואכמ״ל.) In any event, as חשון is the month in which שרה אמנו passed away (פרשת חיי שרה always occurs in the month of חשון), I would like to share a beautiful explanation of a Medrash from Rav Chaim Brisker ZTL; we could even refer to this as: RAV CHAIM’S הספד ON SARAH IMEINU!! In Parashas Vayeira (בראשית כא:י), the Posuk says as follows: ״ותאמר לאברהם גרש האמה הזאת ואת בנה כי לא יירש בן האמה הזאת עם בני יצחק״ “And she said to Avraham, ‘Drive out this maidservant and her son, for this maidservant’s son shall not inherit along with my son, Yitzchak’” At the end of ספר משלי, in the famous hymn of ״אשת חיל״, we find שלמה המלך describing the valiant woman as: ״דרשה צמר ופשתים״ - “seeking out wool and linen”. The ילקוט שמעוני interprets this verse as referring to Sarah as follows: ״דרשה צמר ופשתים - בין יצחק לישמעאל, שנאמר ותאמר שרה לאברהם גרש וגו׳״ “‘Seeking out wool and linen’ - this refers to Sarah who distinguished between יצחק and ישמעאל” From where did the Medrash infer that these words allude to Sarah and her decision to disinherit ישמעאל? Says Rav Chaim Brisker, absolutely Moiradik!! - In demanding that Avraham not allow Yishmael to inherit along with Yitzchak, Sarah seems to have been causing a violation of the prohibition of transferring the rights of the firstborn son of the despised wife to the son of the beloved one - ״לא יוכל לבכר את בן אהובה״ וכו׳ (דברים כא:טז). Sarah, however, reasoned that it was permitted, for Hashem had commanded Avraham to heed whatever Sarah had said - ״כל אשר תאמר אליך שרה שמע בקולה״ (בראשית כא:יב). This constituted a מצות עשה - positive commandment, and whenever a positive commandment comes into conflict with a prohibition, the positive commandment takes precedence (מצות עשה דוחה מצות לא תעשה). The principle of מצות עשה דוחה לא תעשה is derived from the law that woolen tzitzis may be attached to a linen garment (See :יבמות ה). Though the Torah normally precludes the wearing of שטנז - clothing made from wool and linen, the positive commandment of tzitzis OVERRIDES the prohibition of שטנז. This, says Rav Chaim, is the symbolic meaning of Sarah being ״דרשה צמר ופשתים״ - “seeking out wool and linen”. Therein, she established the principle of the precedence of מצוות עשה - positive commandments over negative ones, the very principle which allowed her to insist that Yishmael be disinherited!! Have a wonderful Shabbos!!

Yahrtzeit Yomi #830!! כ חשון (Shabbos) Rav Mordechai Zuckerman רב מרדכי ליב ב״ר דוד נחמי׳ מאיר עיני ישראל (1910 - 2003) 20 Cheshvan (Shabbos) was the 20th yahrtzeit of Rav Mordechai Leib Zuckerman, author of Meir Einei Yisrael (1912-2003). He was born in Samagron, a city near Vilna. In 1931, he moved to Radin to learn with the Chafetz Chaim. After the petirah of the Chafetz Chaim, Rav Mordechai Leib stayed in Radin for eight more years. During the war, he arrived in the Kovna ghetto, where he acted as shamash for Rav Avraham Grodzinsky, the mashgiach of Slabodka. As Rav Avraham's talmid muvhak, he transcribed his mentor's discourses and studied with him privately bechavrusa when Rav Avraham was hospitalized. Subsequently, the Nazis burned down that hospital and Rav Mordechai Leib was the last person to have seen Rav Avraham alive. When the Nazis decided to liquidate the entire ghetto, Rav Mordechai Leib was saved by a miracle when he hid in a pit with a few others. In 1948, he moved to Yerushalayim. When he settled in Givat Shaul, he accepted the positions of rav of the Perushim shul and the head of Kollel Chevron there. He occupied those positions for over 50 years. יהי זכרו ברוך!!
