It's Mid December. We are in the midst of a heavy snowfall in one of our most southern states. The Texas Panhandle is under a Winter Storm Warning for 4 - 8 inches of snow. All eyes now turn to the formation of a Gulf Low. It's forecasted to intensify as it moves up the coast. Snow enthusiasts would ordinarily be ecstatic, especially those that live from the Mid-Atlantic area northward. However, the forecast does not match up to what our ears hear. It's snowing in Texas but there is no Arctic air in sight. And the East Coast forecast has no mention of snow. Why? This episode deals with some of this. Hurricane Hunters flew into the storm system in the Gulf of Alaska on Friday 1/5/24 and gathered information about this storm to improve the forecasting accuracy. This storm reached the Pacific coast Saturday night. It moved South along the California coast on Sunday 1/7/24 as mentioned in this episode. This storm in combination with the trailing Alberta Clipper behind it will be responsible for a major weather pattern change bringing winter from Montana into the Plains and the Midwest. The storm system crosses the Rockies and redevelops on Monday over the Texas panhandle into a stronger low-pressure system of 29.4. The storm becomes negatively tilted as it undergoes rapid intensification. The storm intensifies to category 1 hurricane strength by Wednesday morning of 28.9 as it moves into the Eastern Great Lakes. The track of the storm heads to Interstate 44 in Missouri from Texas and then Interstate 70 in Illinois. The system then moves Northeast passing south and east of Lake Michigan. Summer heat and humidity develop in south Texas along with an enhanced severe weather risk. At the time of this episode, the risk was a 3 but as of early Monday morning, the risk has increased to a 4 out of 5, especially for areas near southeast Louisiana. This means there is a 40% chance for severe weather within a 25-mile radius in this area or more accurately 40% coverage. This risk includes tornadoes, damaging (58+mph) wind gusts, and damaging hail (1+ inch in diameter). This storm system and especially its abundant moisture is the result of the El Nino weather pattern. As is typical in El Nino years there is minimal phasing between the subtropical and polar jet stream. As a result, the air will not be that cold behind the system. Nonetheless, the combination of evaporative cooling and dynamic cooling along with it being the coldest time of year will help the precipitation fall as snow, especially during the heavier precipitation rates. In addition, thundersnow is likely to develop in parts of Northern Missouri and nearby areas. Chicago lies in the most difficult part of this storm to forecast. In this episode, we speak all about this storm along with the Chicago forecast which will likely see 3 to 6 inches. The official amounts will likely be closer to 6 but unofficially the amount on the ground might be closer to 3 or 4 due to possible melting along with the witness of the snow. This El Nino weather pattern will take upon a new twist starting Thursday the first day of the Lunar month Shvat as an Arctic air mass finally makes its into the midwest behind an Alberta clipper. This will be the 1st of 3punches of Arctic Air. Snow will likely fall with each Arctic front. Gulf moisture will likely be ingested into system number 2. This episode discusses the snow totals that occured along and east of the Colorado mountain range in the March 13 - 15 2024 snow storm. There is a focus on the larger metropolitan city of Denver. Find out which cities received 5 feet of snow and if AccuWeather's forecasted snowfall max was accurate. As usual, much of the information from this episode comes from the National Weather Service. Usually it's directly from their website but in this case it comes from the newspaper that tends to gather much information from the National Weather Service, the Washington Post. You will learn why despite seeing an enormous snow total of 2 feet in Denver, this storm will likely be quickly forgotten. A strong upper level low brought an end to record heat, and provided Denver its second earliest measurable snowfall on record. Numerous heat records were set leading up to the snowfall, and several new snowfall and cold records were also broken in this abrupt bout with winter.On September 5, 2020, Denver set its all time record high for September, reaching 101 degrees during the afternoon. This was also the latest date a 100 degree reading has ever been observed in Denver. Another daily record high was then tied on September 6 when Denver hit 97 degrees. September 7th was the last day of heat across the eastern plains of Colorado, when Denver's high temperature reached 93. That tied us for the record for the number of 90 degree days for a year (73), and was also the warmest temperature ever recorded before a day of measurable snowfall.By the evening of September 7th, a series of cold fronts progressed southward from Wyoming into Colorado, dropping the temperature down to the low 30s by early Tuesday morning. Snow developed across the Front Range and foothills overnight, while a mix of rain and snow developed along the I-25 metro corridor. A few locations picked up light snow accumulations in the morning. Accumulating snow was mostly confined to the higher elevations much of the day Tuesday, before spreading across the plains during the late afternoon and evening. Snow spread across the far eastern plains overnight, and tapered off by Wednesday morning. Total snowfall accumulations were 1 to 3 inches across much of the eastern plains, 3 to 6 inches for cities along the mountains (including Boulder and the western portions of Fort Collins), and 4 to 10 inches for the mountains and foothills of the Front Range. A total of 5.6 inches of snow was measured at the NWS Boulder office, while Denver officially measured a total of 1.0 inches. As humid as the Gulf Of Mexico is (along with its surrounding states) it's power doesn't hold a candlestick to the Persian Gulf. This episode discusses some of the water temperatures that occur in the Persian Gulf. We discuss the impact this had on the historical floods that took place in parts of Iran, Onan and the United Arab Emirates. The main focus is the United Arab Emirates because it's easier to find weather information about the UAE and they also have a fascinating cloud seeding program. We discuss cloud seeding and the different approaches UAE uses vs. Israel. It should be noted that the highest widespread totals of rain may have occurred in Iran with several cities of 10+ inches. This episode discusses Wet-bulb-globe temperature which is often referred to as “Wet-bulb” temperature. In cold weather the term Wet-bulb temperature accurately refers to Wet-bulb temperature. In hot weather it usually refers to Wet-bulb-globe temperature. Wet bulb temperature, black globe temperature and dry bulb temperature are all necessary in order to figure out the Wet-bulb-globe temperature. There are other variables needed as well such as sun angle, solar radiation (cloud cover) and wind speed. This episode discusses an intense early season heatwave that is expected to expand and maximize from Mexico to Texas over the next couple days. This will expand further along much of the Gulf Coast reaching a peak on May 9th for most locations. There will be a small window of time when the heat will become life threatening for athletes in some locations. WBGT are considered unbearable at 35°C/95°F. Recent studies show that it's close to unbearable at 86° 87°F / 30°C. This episode discusses the isolated spots of 90°F/32°C WBGT in Texas. We discuss 2 cities regarding this. We discuss how this will be occurring in these 2 cities around 1pm Wednesday and 1pm Thursday May 9th 2024. The NWS has a peak WBGT occuring in parts of South Texas on Wednesday at 93°F/34°C. This heat is of a magnitude that might even be greater than last Summer. The rest of the episode discusses the heatwave including the humidity. At this point, the peak indices will be slightly lower with this event than last Summer's due to the slightly lower dew points. This heat is also not nearly as widespread as it was last Summer. However, last summer's heat didn't get started until mid-June. We discuss areas of extreme temperatures of 45°C+/113°F+ in places that have minimal humidity. We discuss the placement of the dry-line in relation to Brownsville Texas. We discuss the Wet-bulb temperatures Forecasted by the European model (in this context it does not mean WBGT only WBT). We discuss the ending of this heat within the United States. We make brief mention of the current severe weather outbreak including nighttime tornadoes going on in the Plains. In this episode we discuss an intense but short lived 3 day heatwave over South Texas, Mexico and to a lesser extent other parts of the Gulf Coast. This heatwave is from Tuesday - Thursday May 6th - May 8th 2024. In this episode we read a little from The "Washington Post" which discussed record warmth from Mexico to Southern New England. This episode discusses some of the heat indices and very dangerous Wet Bulb Globe temperatures that are occuring in Southeastern Texas.
