Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel: The Inspiring Life of a Dedicated RabbiRav Nosson Tzvi Finkel (12 March 1943 – 8 November 2011) was an incredible American-born Haredi Litvish rabbi and rosh yeshiva (dean) of the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, Israel.Under his guidance from 1990 until his passing in 2011, the Mir Yeshiva flourished into the largest yeshiva in Israel, boasting 6,000 undergraduate students and over 1,600 married students 3. He inspired over 25,000 students throughout his lifetime.Despite his Parkinson's disease, which he suffered for 28 years, Rav Finkel continued to learn Torah for hours, give lectures, and raise funds for his yeshiva worldwide. He presented a breathtaking $500 million for the Mir Yeshiva during his tenure as rosh yeshiva. Rav Finkel was a prominent member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Degel HaTorah and was known for his vast Torah knowledge and warm and caring demeanor towards his students. • Rabbi Kahaneman was born in Lithuania in 1886 and attended several Yeshivas growing up.• He married the daughter of the rabbi of Vidzh and became rabbi there at the end of 1911.• After 1919, he was appointed rabbi of Ponevezh, one of the largest Jewish centers in Lithuania, where he built three yeshivas and a school.• During World War II, he visited Palestine but stayed to oversee Ponevezh Yeshiva from a distance. Later it re-established itself as one of the largest Litvishe in the world.• He also sought to care for many orphans and refugees during this time and traveled widely to secure financial support for his yeshiva.• He wrote Talmudic commentaries, an explanation on Passover Haggadah published after his death in 1969. Once, while studying Maseches Chullin, Hagaon R’ Chaim Kanievsky Zt”l came across a sugyah related to chagovim (grasshoppers). To better understand the Poskim's perspective, Rav Chaim wished to see a specific type of grasshopper. He asked his daughter to bring one to him, but she couldn't find one.After resuming his studies, to his surprise, a grasshopper came through the window and landed on his Gemara. Rav Chaim examined it closely and let it go. Later, he realized that he needed to study the hind legs of the grasshopper, but it was long gone. As he was closing his Gemara, another grasshopper hopped onto it, allowing him to study its hind leg in detail. Rav Yeruchom Levovitz, whose Hebrew name was ירוחם ליוואוויץ and was also known as The Mashgiach by his hundreds of students, was a famous mashgiach ruchani and baal mussar (Jewish Ethics) at the Mir yeshiva in Belarus. He was born in 1875 (5635 in the Jewish calendar) in Lyuban, Minsk Voblast, Belarus (near Slutsk), to Avraham and Chasya Levovitz. Rav Yeruchom received his education in the yeshivas of Slobodka and Kelm and was a disciple of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel and Rav Simcha Zissel Ziv of Kelm.Rabbi Yeruchom Levovitz was the spiritual leader of the Mir Yeshiva in Belarus until he died in 1936. His disciples were said to have followed his every word, never doing anything they "felt" he would not want them to do. Most of the leaders of the yeshivas of inter-war Poland were Levovitz's disciples, and they would come on occasion to visit him and seek his advice. After World War II, much of orthodox Jewry in Europe and their many yeshivas (Jewish schools of higher learning) were wiped out. One of the only yeshivas to survive as a whole body was the Mir Yeshiva, which managed to escape to Shanghai, China, and then on to America.Some of R' Yeruchom's better-known disciples include Simcha Zissel Halevi Levovitz, Avrohom Levovitz, Chaim Shmulevitz, Dovid Povarsky, Isser Yehuda Malin, Aryeh Leib Malin, Abba Berman, Zelik Epstein, Shimon Schwab, Shlomo Wolbe, Zeidel Smiatcky, Aryeh Leib Bakst, Chaim Wysoker, Binyomin Zeilberger, and Nachum Patrovitz. His many discourses and lectures are preserved for posterity in the following sefarim: "Daas Torah," "Daas Chochma U'Mussar," "Shvivai Daas," and "Sifsai Daas on Pirkei Avos," which are a staple of many yeshiva libraries today, as well as many Orthodox Jewish households. He died on the 18th of Sivan in the year 1936 at the age of sixty-three. He is buried in the town of Mir, Belarus, and his grave site (recently rebuilt by his family) is a common destination for the many Jewish tourists who visit the decimated cities of pre-war Eastern Europe. My great-grandfather's name is listed among the patrons who financed its publication, forging a tangible link to our family’s Eastern European heritage.Authored by the Chafetz Chaim, this practical guide was intended for Jews immigrating to America during the massive early 20th-century exodus. Despite his initial reservations about leaving Europe, he acknowledged the realities confronting many Jewish families. Consequently, he crafted this indispensable handbook to help them uphold religious observance in their new homeland. The book addresses fundamental aspects of Jewish life—Sabbath observance, kosher dietary laws, family purity, and Torah study—all presented with clarity and accessibility.What truly captivates me is how this single volume illuminates the struggles faced by immigrant Jews.
