Jews still mark the days between Passover and Shavuot in a "Counting of the Omer." The period of 49 days counted is known as the "Omer period" or "the Omer." Each day, Jews recite a special blessing in the synagogue or at home. During this counting period, there are various customs that many Jewish communities observe, such as refraining from haircuts, getting married, and even listening to music. According to Maharal, there is a symbolic contrast between the omer offering (offered on Passover) and the Shavuos sacrifice provided upon the conclusion of the omer. The former consists of barley, typically an animal food, and represents the Israelites' low and passive spiritual level immediately upon leaving Egypt; In contrast, the latter consists of wheat and represents the Israelites' high and active spiritual level upon receiving the Torah.So many vital ideas are applicable in our spiritual ascent, and in this short shiur, we focus on an often overlooked character trait. Competition gives us a unique perspective on the world, gives us a sense of accomplishment, and can be incredibly rewarding. The Torah teaches us that completion is essential and should not be taken lightly. We must strive to improve ourselves to reach our full potential while never using competition as an excuse to bring another person down. The ancient Jewish sages taught that success comes from hard work and dedication rather than taking shortcuts or belittling others. Completing tasks that are meaningful to us will result in growth and development both mentally and spiritually. Achieving something reminds us of our capabilities, opening new possibilities for additional accomplishments. In addition to providing a sense of accomplishment, completing tasks can also create a connection between ourselves and God. By actively striving to achieve our goals, we demonstrate that we believe in the greatness of something greater than ourselves. The Torah says, “You shall serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul” (Deuteronomy 10:12). We often witness Hashem's hand in the extraordinary and unexpected. We are reminded of the milestones that G-d has performed and continues to perform for us daily. The splitting of the Red Sea is one such momentous event - when it would seem impossible to escape from an enemy advancing upon them, G-d parted the sea so they could march through safely on dry land. The Torah speaks of how miraculous salvation happens even quicker than the blink of an eye (Shmot 14:30). It was "in a split second," as Rashi puts it, that Hashem saved Am Yisrael from specific danger. This highlights two important points about our relationship with G-d. First, Hashem always provides us with salvation and support when needed. And second, Hashem's power is dynamic and instantaneous - our prayers are answered in a split second by an omnipotent force. We must never forget the miracles that G-d has done for us in our lives, those of generations past and those yet to come. We can take comfort in knowing that no matter what challenges or obstacles arise on our journey through life, Hashem will be there at every step to lend us aid and guidance. It also involves listening to them and taking their advice seriously. Respect for our parents can help us grow into responsible adults with a strong sense of morality. Honoring our parents can also bring us closer to God. When we respect our parents, we respect the one who created them — namely, God himself. We should always strive to be an excellent example for others and honor our parents as part of that effort. To better understand the Poskim's perspective, Rav Chaim wished to see a specific type of grasshopper. He asked his daughter to bring one to him, but she couldn't find one.After resuming his studies, to his surprise, a grasshopper came through the window and landed on his Gemara. Rav Chaim examined it closely and let it go. Later, he realized that he needed to study the hind legs of the grasshopper, but it was long gone. As he was closing his Gemara, another grasshopper hopped onto it, allowing him to study its hind leg in detail. Rav Yeruchom Levovitz, whose Hebrew name was ירוחם ליוואוויץ and was also known as The Mashgiach by his hundreds of students, was a famous mashgiach ruchani and baal mussar (Jewish Ethics) at the Mir yeshiva in Belarus. He was born in 1875 (5635 in the Jewish calendar) in Lyuban, Minsk Voblast, Belarus (near Slutsk), to Avraham and Chasya Levovitz. Rav Yeruchom received his education in the yeshivas of Slobodka and Kelm and was a disciple of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel and Rav Simcha Zissel Ziv of Kelm.Rabbi Yeruchom Levovitz was the spiritual leader of the Mir Yeshiva in Belarus until he died in 1936. His disciples were said to have followed his every word, never doing anything they "felt" he would not want them to do. Most of the leaders of the yeshivas of inter-war Poland were Levovitz's disciples, and they would come on occasion to visit him and seek his advice. After World War II, much of orthodox Jewry in Europe and their many yeshivas (Jewish schools of higher learning) were wiped out. One of the only yeshivas to survive as a whole body was the Mir Yeshiva, which managed to escape to Shanghai, China, and then on to America.Some of R' Yeruchom's better-known disciples include Simcha Zissel Halevi Levovitz, Avrohom Levovitz, Chaim Shmulevitz, Dovid Povarsky, Isser Yehuda Malin, Aryeh Leib Malin, Abba Berman, Zelik Epstein, Shimon Schwab, Shlomo Wolbe, Zeidel Smiatcky, Aryeh Leib Bakst, Chaim Wysoker, Binyomin Zeilberger, and Nachum Patrovitz.
