Tuesday’s Chumash concludes with “which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow,” which Onkelos translates as “with my prayer and with my plea” – tefillah. And then we’ll have the fulfillment of the promise that “All these fast days will be nullified in the future in the days of Moshiach, and moreover, they will be transformed to festivals and days of gladness and joy”. Similarly, there’s a discussion as to whether the mitzvah of Kerias Shema is a biblical obligation etc. But by studying Chassidus, which explains the path of contemplating Hashem’s greatness and the lowliness of man, to the point that one truly feels he is terribly lacking – then his davening has the force of the biblical mitzvah of davening for his needs! And so, too, regarding Kerias Shema: when one prefaces his Kerias Shema with the brachos of Kerias Shema as explained according to Chassidus – “who chooses his people Yisrael with love” etc. – and reaches the level of being “in the King’s palace” (where “one who gestures in the presence of the king etc.”) – he is biblically obligated to have mesiras-nefesh for Hashem’s oneness and to love Him “with all your heart and all your soul and all your might”! Similarly: when we hear that a claim is made that Chabad Chassidim aren’t active – we must know that this claim has no basis; Chassidim have been spreading the wellsprings and accomplishing entire worlds! But at the same time, the very fact that such a claim is made serves as a directive for one’s service: however much one may have accomplished, it can be considered as though he wasn’t active, because he could have done more – and therefore he must now increase his activities many times over. When the chassidim discovered this, the Alter Rebbe forbade them from causing the man any trouble, and finished the cup of tea the man had prepared for him [on the night of 20 Kislev]. Seemingly, after such a miraculous liberation, how could such a “mistake” have happened, that the Alter Rebbe now suffered even more at the hands of a Jew than he had at the hands of gentiles? We must say that this, too, is part of the liberation: the key point of the liberation was that it wasn’t a victory of one side over the other; rather, “his soul was redeemed in peace” because “the many were with me.” This was expressed at the very beginning of his liberation, when a Jew who opposed Chassidus now acknowledged the liberation and provided refreshments in its honor! Seemingly, why didn’t he begin with the Alter Rebbe’s birth? The answer is because the imprisonment was decreed above not just because there was such a soul in the world, but because that soul started to be revealed in the world, which began when he traveled to the Maggid. The lesson is that as long as a person doesn’t encounter challenges, doubts and opposition, that shows he hasn’t yet begun to fulfill his mission in the world. How does one begin fulfilling his mission? By being a student and mekabel for ten years, as we find by the Alter Rebbe: only after setting out to be a student, and experiencing hardship, did he come to the ultimate spiritual elevation. Rashi explains, “Whole in his body…whole in his money…whole in his Torah,” and the Midrash adds, “whole in his sons.” Being that “the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the sons,” this is a lesson for every Jew: one’s Divine service must be such that he reaches a state of “wholeness” in all these areas! 2) Chassidus explains that Yaakov sent angels to Esav to inform him that he had already completed his service of birurim and was ready for the Redemption; similarly, every Jew sends the message to Esav, that for his part, he’s ready for the Redemption, through his service of Torah and mitzvos. The question is: we find that the kohanim wore (head) tefillin during their service every day, and similarly, they read from a Sefer Torah in the Beis Hamikdash! True, with regards to touching tefillin and a Sefer Torah in the Mikdash, the Rambam has already told us that the decree doesn’t apply in the Mikdash. But the question still stands with regards to the fact that, like everyone else, kohanim wore their tefillin (and read from the Sefer Torah) outside the Mikdash, too. Seemingly, then, every kohen would have been obligated to immerse his hands in a kosher mikveh before entering the Mikdash – yet we don’t find such an obligation? As our Sages said, “One who gestures before the king etc.”, meaning, when one stands before the King, even a slight movement is considered rebellion against the throne, Rachmana litzlan. When Hashem shows closeness to “a commoner who is despised and lowly among men, a disgraceful creature cast on the dunghill,” the effect is two-fold: (a) from the receiver’s perspective, he feels humbler, and (b) from Heaven’s perspective, the greater Divine revelation diminishes the ability for any independent entity to exist. This is similar to the reason labor is forbidden on Shabbos, though it is a mitzvah during the week – because on Shabbos (a) there’s a greater Divine revelation, which nullifies independent existence, and (b) the world recognizes its own lowliness. This is also why we say “Pardon us…for we have sinned” specifically in Shemoneh Esrei – because it is precisely when one stands before the King that he realizes that what was previously acceptable is considered sin. But it all pertains to the revealed aspect of the person (“land”), and ultimately, it doesn’t render him completely nullified; he remains an “entity who loves.” (2) Then there’s another effect of studying Chassidus, that it renders a person completely nullified, he’s completely “covered” by his life-force – G-dliness (like fish are covered by the sea. For this, it’s not enough to study Nigleh (where it’s possible to forget the Giver of the Torah, chas v’shalom), rather, one must study Chassidus in abundance, to “know the G-d of your father.” And since this aspect of studying Chassidus isn’t absolutely indispensable to one’s practical service, it is like “pearls” which are merely an adornment, and which one can do without. However, that applies only when one is in his own four cubits. By contrast, when he’s about to go to the king’s palace, he must prepare himself accordingly, including with pearls! But it’s not enough to submit one’s will to the “overseer” and rely only on him – because one needs his own connection to the life source! In simple terms: everyone must personally set fixed times to actually study Chassidus (and Nigleh), and toil in it until he feels he truly understands it etc.; he must not just learn it superficially, nor can he rely on his knowledge acquired throughout his life. Seemingly, then, what is the benefit of breaking down such a building? The answer is that the “building” here means the “middle path”, which is the proper path according to Torah; nevertheless, in the time of exile we must “break it down” – by going beyond all limitations, including the boundaries within holiness. And this is the basic point of the Maamar Basi L’gani 5710: to be victorious over the shtus of le’umas zeh and the doubled and redoubled darkness of exile – it’s not enough to follow the middle path (a holy “building”). Rather, we must adopt the path of shtus of holiness. The lesson is: Torah study and mitzvos must be in a manner of U’paratzta – without limits! Even if one helped this Jew uncover his vitality and passion, and the person claims, “the water is ours” – he uses it for the “Pelishtim”, and even this happens a second time, and logic seemingly dictates that there’s no reason to continue working with him – nevertheless, one must not give up. Rather, he must continue working with him, without being limited by intellect, because Yitzchak, and likewise every Jew, “is born from a holy drop,” and is connected to Hashem with a bond that transcends measure and limitation! Though the Sages decreed that food and drink are not protected, the decree doesn’t apply to a person, and therefore, a person in a barrel with a tightly fastened cover remains pure. In terms of man’s Divine service: a person draws life by connecting to Hashem through His Torah and mitzvos, as it says, “You who cleave to Hashem your G-d are alive, all of you this day.” Thus, when Torah and mitzvos are lacking, one lacks life, too, chas v’shalom. The solution is teshuvah – renewing the bond with Hashem. A Jew is inherently alive, but must descend to this world, which is like “entering a tent covering a corpse”, especially during the exile. The maamar Lehavin Inyan Hahishtatchus states that “all tefilos must ascend on high through the entrance of Gan Eden on earth, and therefore, a tefilah recited at Me’aras Hamachpelah is very much desirable and accepted, because we have a tradition that this was the location of the entrance to the actual Gan Eden.” And this is despite the fact that it says in Gemara and Shulchan Aruch to face Yerushalayim during tefilah. Additionally, Chassidus explains that it was only after David served as king in Chevron for seven years that he was able to be king in Yerushalayim. התוכן לקט סיפורים בקשר לכ"ק אדמו"ר (מהורש"ב) נ"ע: 1) ההכנסה לבריתו של אאע"ה של כ"ק אדנ"ע היתה אמורה להיות ביום כ"ז מרחשון. כ"ק אדמו"ר הצ"צ, שהי' אמור להיות הסנדק, אמר כל הזמן שהברית לא תהי' בזמן, וכך הי' בפועל, אף שעשו כל ההכנות בכ"ז מרחשון והיתה אמירת דא"ח מיוחדת, שלכן פשוט שבאותו יום לא אמרו תחנון. 2) פעם בצעירותם שיחקו אדנ"ע ואחיו הרז"א "רבי וחסיד". אדנ"ע, שהי' ה"חסיד", ביקש מהרז"א, ה"רבי", "תיקון" על דבר מסויים, וכאשר הרז"א השיבו, נענה אדנ"ע ואמר "אינך רבי"! כי מתי שרבי עונה – הוא נאנח, ואתה לא נאנחת! 3) פעם, בהיותו בן ט' לערך, שאל את אחיו הרז"א מדוע יש "נקודה" ב"מודה אני" אחרי "בחמלה.( רבה אמונתך)", וב"אהבת עולם" אין "נקודה" אחרי תיבת "חמלה (גדולה)"? והשיבו: זוהי פעולת התפילה – שה"נקודה" "תתפשט". 4) בשנת ה'תרמ"ד, כמה שנים אחרי החתונה, דר כ"ק אדנ"ע בדירה בת שני חדרים והסתפק בזה ועבד שם השי"ת בשמחה ובטוב לבב! The Tzemach Tzedek, who was supposed to be the sandek, kept saying the bris wouldn’t be on time, and indeed it ended up being postponed – though they did all the preparations that day, chassidus was said, and they didn’t say tachanun. 2) When the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden and his brother the Raz”a were young, they once played “Rebbe and chasid.” The Rebbe Nishmaso Eden, as the “chasid,” asked his brother, the “Rebbe” for a tikkun for something; when he replied, the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden told him “You’re not a Rebbe” – because when a Rebbe gives an answer – he sighs – and you didn’t sigh. 3) When the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden was around nine years old , his brother the Raz”a asked him why there’s a period in Modeh Ani after the word b’chemlah. He replied that this is the effect of davening – to extend the “dot” throughout the day. 4) In the year 5644, already a number of years after his wedding, the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden lived in a two-room home; he sufficed with that and served Hashem with joy and gladness of heart. There were those who “laughed,” saying that at the ages of one hundred and ninety, Avraham and Sarah couldn’t possibly have a child, but in the end Yitzchak was born. Similarly, when the Rebe arrived in the United States and established Shaloh, for Jewish public school children to have the opportunity to learn about Yiddishkeit, some people “laughed,” arguing that nothing would come of it because this country already has an established system that’s ninety or a hundred years old etc., and that even if you get a Jewish child involved temporarily, it won’t last, and the eventually the ways of the land will erase it. But ultimately, this program resulted in tens of thousands of observant Jews! Similarly, Og, king of Bashan claimed that he could wipe away Yitzchak with one finger, but in the end Og fell into the hands of Yitzchak’s descendants. And belief that G-d is present in this world, such that one’s day-to-day conduct is permeated with this faith, and before doing or not doing something – he first thinks about what Hashem says about it. When we talk about going out to gather Jewish children and teach them Alef-Beis, some people claim: I’m a big maskil and oved etc., why should I occupy myself with this, when others can do it? But we must know that this is a “mitzvah applicable to the body”: in order for one’s body to become more refined etc., he must go against his nature, by gathering Jewish children to teach them Alef-Beis – just like the Tzemach Tzedek, who personally took the time every month to engage in the education of young children! And even if until now one was busy with mesiras-nefesh and contemplating the Divine oneness, he must know that there’s an even greater service – to go to the “outside” and gather children and teach them that Hashem runs the world!
