Even after they had fulfilled Hashem’s command to build the Mishkan, and they knew that Hashem’s Shechinah dwells among them, Hashem wanted His presence to be openly revealed to the physical eye – “…and the glory of Hashem appeared to all the people…”. The lesson for our times: Hashem wants that even when the Jewish people are “in the desert,” in exile, they should make a Mishkan for Him from physical things, and through this, He dwells among them. And certainly this applies to those in every generation who work on behalf of the community (like Betzalel and Oholiav). And we also learn from here that one should not suffice with the fact that Hashem knows, and that he himself knows what he has accomplished by making a Sanctuary for Him, rather, it must be openly revealed for all to see. The Rambam derives this from the verse, “And it shall be for safekeeping for the congregation of the Jewish people.” This idea is also found in the Sefer Hamitzvos of R’ Saadia Gaon, who writes “and the parah for constant safekeeping.” Though some explain that R’ Saadia Gaon (and the verse “for safekeeping”) refer to the portion of the ashes that was “placed in the chayl,” and they further posit that this portion of the ashes is the main aspect of the mitzvah, because it is from this portion that was sprinkled on the kohen gadol before Yom Kippur – when there was an active obligation to become pure – however, this explanation is problematic etc. It stands to reason that R’ Saadia Gaon agrees with the Rambam that the main aspect of the mitzvah is to always have the ashes ready for anyone who needs it. As the Tzemech Tzedek brings down, Achashverosh below reflects “Achashverosh” above – the “One to Whom end and beginning belong” (acharis v’reishis shelo); thus, Hashem, too wore the priestly garments! This reflects the two opposite interpretations of the words in the Megillah, “On that night…”: (1) “That night” represents a double concealment; it is not only “night,” but “that night”; (2) “That night” represents a level so lofty and hidden, that it transcends even the level of “He made darkness His hiding place”! And likewise, “the feast of that wicked one” is connected to “the feast” of the one “to Whom end and beginning belong.” Because through the service of transforming “willful transgressions into merits,” one reaches a higher level than through merits themselves. Similarly, the verse states, “I will surely hide My face on that day” – in the future tense: it is specifically our Divine service in the time of exile (when “I will surely hide”) that brings about the future Redemption. His father replied: If so, we need to say “new Chassidus” (and not the maamar he had been planning to say). He added: On Shabbat... there will be nice guests. Indeed, that Shabbos, and on Purim the next day, the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden delivered maamarim on the same topics as those of the Alter Rebbe’s maamarim in 5547 (1787). My father-in-law, the Rebbe concluded that nowadays, one can validly complain about all the confusion that there is, and may Hashem remove the validity of this complaint. (2) “If one says to another: ‘Come and stand together with the [one] witness [I already have]. You do not have to testify, but the borrower will become frightened and panic, thinking that you are two witnesses and he will admit the debt on his own volition’…With regard to this and similar matter it says: ‘Keep distant from a false word.’” False testimony is so severe even for one to even give the appearance that he is going to testify –and in a way that will bring the borrower to confess and do teshuvah – is forbidden. And if the teacher argues that back in his day, there was no such emphasis in yeshiva on instilling Yiras Shamayim – back then, people were “healthy,” but these days, Rachmana litzlan, every teacher and educator is considered a “healer of the souls of the Jewish people”! One cannot leave a child to wander alone in the darkness! The first thing is to put him in a place of light, to know that he is a child of Hashem, Who watches over him and examines his conduct. This is the purpose of teaching him Torah; the Torah study is necessary to ensure he will “repudiate idolatry” (which is quality for which we are called “Yehudim,” as the Gemara says in Megillah). And the educator must instill this in the child already at a young age, when the child goes to play in kindergarten and learns the Alef-Beis – that the foundation of everything is Anochi Hashem Elokecha. The fundamental lesson is: The world thinks that the purpose of a school is to impart knowledge, whether ordinary knowledge in a non-Jewish school, or Torah knowledge in a religious school, without focusing on improving character and conduct. Thus, it is possible for a child to finish his schooling just as much like a “wild donkey” as when he was born! (And although regarding Torah study there is the promise that “the luminary within it will bring him back to good” – but we don’t know how long that will take.) But really the purpose of a school is to inculcate the students with positive traits, with love and fear of Hashem – so that they cry out, “We are with you,” whether for life or the opposite. And “If there is no fear, there is no wisdom.” This is what the school principal must know: No matter what subject is being taught – the goal and emphasis of it all must be fear of Hashem and conduct according to the Torah! And this is the great trouble with college: they demand only knowledge of the material, and don’t care about positive behavior. But on the other hand, the verse specifically emphasizes that there’s a rich person and there’s a poor person – distinctions among the Jewish people. The explanation is: the half-shekel reflects mesiras-nefesh; even the most unworthy Jew is prepared to literally sacrifice their life, and therefore when it comes to the act of giving the half-shekel, they were all equal. But mesiras-nefesh also requires the involvement of the inner dimension of the soul; it must permeate all ten faculties of the soul. And here there is a distinction: one gives the ten faculties of the “rich,” and another gives the ten faculties of the “poor.” The practical lesson is that every Jew is a servant of Hashem, surrendering himself and his will to Hashem etc. And this aspect, which is the main thing, applies equally to all. If that’s what you have to do, at least go into your room afterwards and cry about it! Why do you enjoy the fact that “that wicked one” heaps praise upon your child and invites him to “the feast”...to the point that it’s become the custom in this country that when a child excels in holy subjects, nobody makes a big deal about it, but when the child excels in secular subjects, they publish it in the newspapers and give awards etc.! (This also explains why they made curtains of twisted linen beforehand.) The lesson is that one should be careful to avoid causing suffering to animals, and all the more so to a human being, and all the more so a Jew. The reason a knot prevents forgetting is because forgetting comes from kelipas nogah etc., and therefore, a “doubled and redoubled” force is needed to nullify, similar to a knot (as explained in Iggeres HaKodesh). This then is expressed physically, in that a knot helps to prevent forgetting. And the reason that a knot helps even a non-Jew remember (as we find regarding Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer, who “tied knots” so as not to forget about Yosef), is because if tying knots was effective only for the Jewish people and not for the nations of the world, that would diminish the free choice of the Jewish people with regards to Yiddishkeit (which is also the reason why the Jewish body resembles that of nations of the world). Remembering, and not forgetting, are particularly important for Yiddishkeit: when a person remembers that he is newly created every moment from absolute nothingness by Hashem Himself – it’s impossible for him to transgress Hashem’s will. It is because the ultimate purpose of creation is to transform physicality into spirituality. Thus, Hashem told Moshe that even when he reaches a level that transcends time, he must still maintain a connection to time, so that when he descends from the mountain, he can bring the preciousness of this level to Torah down to the Jewish people. But the point is the spiritual inheritance passed down from the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, and Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah. Every Jewish boy and girl should know that they have been given the most precious “inheritance” and “heritage”: “The Torah that Moshe commanded us is the inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov,” and it must be cherished and used properly. (2) The idea of an “inheritance” in Divine service: Every Jew has three aspects: “We are fortunate, how goodly is our portion…our lot…our inheritance.” “Inheritance” refers to the love and fear every Jew inherits from the Patriarchs. But seemingly, since our suspicion is only a doubt, why not have him take the oath nonetheless, especially if the plaintiff wants him to take an oath? We can explain that the main reason is because of the prohibition, “Do not place a stumbling block before the blind” – to avoid causing him to stumble by taking a false oath. From this, we can learn a remarkable lesson: Even when it comes to a very lowly person, who knows how much the plaintiff needs his money, yet is still prepared to swear falsely that he doesn’t owe it – one of the most severe prohibitions in the Torah – still the Torah cares about this Jew’s spiritual state, to the point that it saves him from the risk of a false oath. The Torah “brings healing to the world,” and certainly to those Jews who are spiritually il. Thus, Moshe’s words were fulfilled in the best possible manner. For example, a Jew serving in the role of “Zevulun” can partner with a Jew serving the role of “Yissachar” etc. However, although one properly “serves his Maker” in this fashion and we can’t demand more from him – as a practical matter he will not “find” success in Torah this way. The only way to “find” success (like a “found object,” which is not proportional to the effort invested in finding it) is to toil in Torah. Seemingly, the order should have been the opposite: first comes atonement for sins, which endears the Jewish people to Hashem, which enables a person to ask for sustenance (for the present) and removal of decrees (for the future). But the Gemara teaches that first comes the removal of decrees, even before the sins are atoned for. The service of the Mishkan was to transform the folly of le’umas zeh to folly of holiness. This is also why the beams are called kerashim – because they transform the sheker (falsehood) of the world, and attach it (mekasher) to G-dliness. In Os 9 of the maamar he explains that this is also why the kerashim were “standing” (omdim) – like “pillars” (amudim) that connect the roof and the floor to be literally one”; he adds that this is “similar to the function of mitzvos, which are called pillars because they draw down and connect the Or Ein Sof literally to the worlds.” Thus, the kerashim are similar to mitzvos in that they connect, but not exactly the same because the mitzvos “draw down” as well as connect etc. We can explain this based on what he writes earlier in the maamar, that the service of the kerashim is man’s service with his Divine soul, with which he transforms the folly of the animal soul; as compared to the service with the physicality of this world, this is considered a spiritual service. But to draw down the Divine Essence and Being, the “highest height”, and connect it to the worlds, one needs the practical mitzvos specifically, which are enclothed in the physicality of the world, “the lowest low.” (But this comes after the service of the kerashim, that is, performing the mitzvos spiritually through man, which connects the Or Ein Sof to the words, and then, by fulfilling them physically, one draws down the Divine Essence and Being and attaches it to the worlds etc.)Two excerpts from Maamar Basi L’Gani, Yud Shevat 5719.
