משיחת שמחת בית השואבה ה'תשט"ז ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-02-2025 Synopsis On the verse, “…The ways of the world are his,” our Sages taught, “Do not read it as ‘ways’ (halichos), but as ‘halachos.’” We know that when it says, “Do not read it as…but…” – both interpretations are valid. In this case: in order for Hashem to have mehalchim [i.e. beings that advance spiritually] in the world (“the ways of the world”), such that the world becomes a dwelling place for Him, there must be the halachos of the Torah, which show how one must conduct himself in the world. Studying Torah only to amass “possessions” for oneself or because one enjoys its intellectual concepts, is not the purpose of the Torah. Torah study, even for those whose “Torah is their occupation,” must be done “to study and to teach, to keep, to perform and to uphold.” The “greatness of Torah” is when it “leads to action” – “the ways of the world are his.” One who studies Torah, which is the possession of the King of kings, is using Hashem’s property – just that the King grants him permission to do so in order for his learning to lead to “action.”Excerpt from sichah of Simchas Beis Hashoeivah 5716 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-02-2025

משיחת יום ג' פ' ברכה, וא"ו תשרי ה'תשד"מ ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=20-02-2025 Synopsis A yahrzeit contains an inherent paradox: on the one hand, it expresses faith in the soul’s eternity, because we study Torah and give tzedakah etc. in the soul’s merit, even though years may have passed since the soul departed this world. (As discussed many times, the soul’s eternity doesn’t need to be taken on faith; any reasonable person understands it. Only the soul’s connection with the body isn’t eternal.) But on the other hand, on a yahrtzeit one says Kaddish, “May His great name be magnified and sanctified,” implying growth and elevation, associated with the soul’s ascent from world to world. The power to magnify the eternal soul etc. comes about through peace, which is the union of opposites. (As the Gemara says, when Moshe ascended on high, Hashem asked him, “Is there no peace in your city?” (I.e., do people not greet each other in your city?) Moshe replied, “Now may the power of Hashem be magnified”. Hashem expected Moshe to bring “peace” from “your city” into heaven, which is the “magnification.”Excerpt from sichah of Tuesday, parashas Vezos Habracha, 6 Tishrei 5744. א' השיחות דהתוועדות י"ט כסלו ה'תשכ"ט ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=19-02-2025 Synopsis Since the Alter Rebbe’s imprisonment came as a result of disseminating the approach of Chabad Chassidus to all Jews, it is understood that the redemption of 19 Kislev was also the redemption and triumph of Chabad Chassidus – so that it can and ultimately will reach every single Jew, and in a manner of peace – “He has redeemed my soul in peace.” The novelty Chabad Chassidus compared to general Chassidus is the emphasis on intellectual comprehension and understanding, which influences the emotions of the heart and, ultimately, one’s actions. For although “action is the main thing,” when action is accompanied by intellectual comprehension and heartfelt emotion, the action becomes greater and deeper, and attains more vitality, as we see in practice. As the Baal Shem Tov taught on the verse, “When you see a donkey (chamor)... you shall surely help along with him,” that one should not try to break the body and the animal soul, but on the contrary, to serve Hashem together with them – and with the additional dimension added by the Chabad approach, that not only does the faculty of action agree to it and serve Hashem, but all the faculties of the body, including the intellect of the mind. Our commemoration of 19 Kislev is not just a memory, but must inject light and vitality into our Divine service in the present.Sichah from farbrengen of 19 Kislev 5729 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=19-02-2025

ג' חלקים משיחת י"ב תמוז ה'תשכ"ח ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=18-02-2025 Synopsis [Regarding the recent rabbinic meeting where a rabbi from Russia spoke and showed pictures of a yeshivah building and mikveh there, etc.:] The halacha is that “The poor of your city take precedence” [as Rashi explains on the verse in Parashas Mishpatim, “When you lend money to My people…”]. Therefore, it is obvious that any gathering of many Jews should be utilized first and foremost to strengthen Yiddishkeit among the local community. Yet it didn’t occur to anyone at the meeting to use it as an opportunity to strengthen Yiddishkeit in New York! This, despite the fact that it is doubtful whether they could help those faraway, but it is certain that they could help locally. Moreover, when this individual in whose honor the meeting was held got up showed pictures of the yeshivah and mikveh there, someone asked him: “What’s happening on the other side of the door?” The one asking the question knew that he couldn’t answer it; thus, asking such a question could have no benefit. Rather, this was a clear sign from Heaven to those assembled: The question wasn’t about the yeshivah and mikveh there, but about the state of affairs of Jewish life here! The one asking the question was in fact himself being asked from above: What’s happening behind the doors of the yeshivos here? How many children aren’t attending yeshivah? With how many families have you discussed the importance of Taharas Hamishpacha?!3 excerpts from sichah of 12 Tammuz 5728 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=18-02-2025

ב' חלקים מהתוועדות כ"ד טבת ה'תשי"ב ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=17-02-2025 Synopsis (1) Reviewing Chassidus in shuls isn’t just for the bochurim, also for the young married men; even if they think they don’t need it for themselves, they should do it for the benefit of the people who daven in the shul. Similarly, being a “shining lamp” in general applies even to married people who have left the confines of the yeshiva; now they are considered “domesticated animals” (“who sleep in the city”), because when it gets “dark,” they return home… (2) Everyone (especially the married people, who are involved in worldly matters) must work to instill within themselves the recognition that nothing exists other than Hashem and Lubavitch (the teachings of Chassidus, and Torah in general), a reality that will be revealed in the future. (3) With regards to studying for semicha: The bochurim should obtain semicha before marriage (following the custom of the Beis HaRav as revealed by the Rebbe Rayatz). Similarly, married people who are suited for it should pursue semicha as well. At the very least, they should obtain a level of semicha where they are knowledgeable in practical matters of halachah in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, Yoreh Deiah, the laws of Shabbos, and some of Even Haezer.2 excerpts from farbrengen of 24 Teves 5712 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=17-02-2025

משיחת מוצאי ש"פ משפטים, מבה"ח אדר ראשון – בחדרו – ה'תשל"ח ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=16-02-2025 Synopsis The verse states (at the beginning of Parashas Mishpatim), “If you buy a Hebrew servant” – “If you buy” in the singular, referring to Moshe Rabbeinu, who “buys” every Jew: by imparting da’as into a Jew, Moshe enables the emunah to permeate all aspects of a Jew’s soul, to the extent that it becomes an “acquisition” within his soul, as well as his animal soul, which becomes subjugated to the G-dly soul, thereby creating a dwelling place for Hashem in the lower worlds. This is expressed in action (the main thing) – “These are the laws that you must set before them.” When a Jew, even at a time when, “we are still servants of Achashverosh,” stands firm and “neither kneels nor prostrates himself,” such that even when it comes to “Mishpatim” – laws that make sense reationally – he fulfills them only because they have been “set before them” by Moshe – that causes “the month to be transformed etc.” already at the start of the month, even before Purim. Not encroaching on others etc. doesn’t harm one’s livelihood; to the contrary – adhering to these laws ensures that one’s earnings will be used for good things. It is specifically through keeping the halachos that “the ways (halichos) of the world are his” – he becomes a master over the “world” (from the expression helem v’hester – concealment).Excerpt from sichah of Motzaei Shabbos Parashas Mishpatim, Mevarchim Adar Rishon 5738 – in the Rebbe’s room For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=16-02-2025 לזכות הרה"ת ר׳ משה הכהן וזוגתו נחמה דינה ומשפחתם שיחיו כהן להצלחה בכל הענינים בגשמיות וברוחניות

משיחת אור לט"ו בשבט ה'תשמ"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=14-02-2025 Synopsis The Alter Rebbe’s recently published maamar (in past times, the publication of a single maamar was cause for the greatest celebration, and certainly these days when Chassidus pours like water) on the verse, “Hashem’s Torah is perfect, restoring the soul” explains that in order for the Torah to be “perfect,” a Jew must first “restore his soul” – bringing his soul back to Hashem. Based on this he explains that’s Rav Yehuda’s statement, “A person should always study Torah not for its sake, because from doing it not for its sake he will come to do it for its sake” was “advice to his students…that they should first toil not for its sake,” but rather to draw their souls near to Hashem. In this way, the person studying becomes a whole person, so that “afterwards he can toil for its sake” – “for the sake of Torah, to elevate it to its root” and make it “perfect.” This is also the advantage of the Torah study that comes after davening: Because davening connects a Jew to G-dliness and reveals the Jew’s soul, after davening the Torah study is whole since it is being done by a person who is whole.Excerpt from sichah of 15 Shevat 5745 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=14-02-2025 לע"נ מרת גאלדע רחל בת ר' חייב צבי ע"ה הרשקוביץ ליום היארצייט שלה ט"ז שבט. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

This proves that the physical dimension of something is only a garment and secondary to its inner, spiritual dimension. For example, the Beis Hamidash: although the physical Beis Hamikdash was destroyed, the Beis Hamikdash continues to exist spiritually in every Jew, and the service of Korbanos continues to exist spiritually in tefillah. Similarly, the gentiles were only able to destroy the physicality of Eretz Yisrael, but spiritually, even today, on the Rosh Hashana for Trees a Jew is inspired, and eats the fruits for which Eretz Yisrael is praised, saying the bracha on it, and thinking the meaning of the words etc. (thought, speech, and action). And even better is to associate it with learning something connected to the day as well. Regarding the concept of “on this day”: The difference between Moshe and all other prophets is that the prophets prophesied using the term “So” (Koh), because they saw only an image, whereas Moshe, who prophesied with the term “This” (Zeh) – had a direct vision of the matter itself. (When Moshe said “So said Hashem: About midnight...” – that’s because what he said to Pharaoh – “about midnight” – was not Hashem’s exact words, as Hashem had said “at midnight” precisely.) This is also why in the future era, “Every individual will point with their finger as it says, ‘And it shall be said on that day: Behold, this is our G-d….” And the Torah itself is on the level of “This,” because through studying Torah, which is “entirely one” with Hashem, one connects with Hashem – “It is Me that you are taking.”2 excerpts from sichah of 15 Shevat 5745 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=12-02-2025

Meaning, even though they had just left a harsh exile and were running to receive the Torah – they didn’t receive the Torah until they had an impact so that even Yisro, who wasn’t born a Jew, and who was a “priest of Midyan” who had served every idolatry, came to recognize that Hashem is greater than all the deities. The lesson is that a Jew must not suffice with illuminating his own home and educating his own children in the path of Torah and mitzvos – in order for him and his family to merit to receive the Torah, he must also draw others near, even those who are in “Midyan,” and bring them to receive the Torah too. Then all of them together will merit to here Hashem say “I am Hashem your G-d,” in the singular, to every Jew individually.Excerpt from sichah of 10 Shevat 5718 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=11-02-2025 לזכות מרת שרה ברכה בת חנה רבקה שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה י"ג שבטלשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

When my father-in-law the Rebbe asked his father, on the day after Yom Kippur, “Nu, and what now?” – he replied that “Now we must begin to do teshuvah.” Meaning, one must not suffice with their current state, even his state on Yom Kippur, but must add and more and more; even on “the day after” Yom Kippur one must perform the service “judging the people” etc. And this is the ultimate perfection in divine service, as it says at the end of today’s Chumash, “the entire people will come to its place in peace” – “If peace is here, everything is here.” (2) The general concept of Moshe “seeking out…leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds etc.” is that Moshe takes a simple person and takes a look at him, and thereby turns him into a “leader of thousands etc.” – a shining lamp. This also emphasizes addition, in that despite Moshe’s greatness, Yisro advised him to add to his service by “seeking out…” etc.2 excerpts from sichah of 15 Shevat 5742 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=10-02-2025 לזכות הרה"ת ר' יהושע בן עטא דבורה שי' ליום ההולדת שלו י"ב שבט לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

ב' חלקים משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תשכ"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=09-02-2025 Synopsis This farbrengen is in connection with the hilula of my father-in-law the Rebbe. Since on the day of one’s passing, “all man’s toil that his soul toiled throughout his life...is revealed and illuminates... below”, and since the role of the Chabad Nesi’im is to reveal the inner dimension of Torah in a way that can be understood and grasped, we can understand why the maamar the Rebbe published to be studied on Yud Shevat, begins with a discussion of tzaddikim drawing down G‑dliness into this world, which is also the purpose of the soul’s descent into this world (from the moment of birth). And at the end of the maamar he cites the teaching of our Sages, “Who knows his moment and time…” when the soul returns to Gan Eden. The maamar thus encompasses the entire cycle of a person’s life on earth, the purpose of which is to create a dwelling place for Hashem in the lower realms and bringing about the revelation below of light of Sovev Kol Almin, which transcends all measure and limitation. Therefore, man’s service, which also brings about this revelation, also transcends all measure and limitation – the “folly of holiness.” Every individual has the power to do this, through the “extension of Moshe in every generation” that exists within him. As it says at the beginning of the maamar, that after the Shechinah departed from this world, the tzaddikim arose and brought the Shechinah back down below.2 excerpts from sichah of Yud Shevat 5725 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=09-02-2025 לזכות ביילא בת חי'ה ריסא שתחי׳ ונגר ליום ההולדת שלה י״א שבט - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובותנדבת אבי' ר' שמואל שי' ונגר

First and foremost, a Jew must know that Hashem prepares Chessed for him that transcends the natural order, and it comes down like the man (as subsequently described in today’s Chumash), where everyone tasted in it whatever they desired. And from the “desert of the nations” itself, where the Torah was given, we proceed to welcome Moshiach Tzidkeinu, who will “teach Torah to the entire people.” (This Torah was also given at Matan Torah, but it was since concealed. As explained on a previous occasion, at Matan Torah it was the secrets of Torah and the Divine Chariot that were revealed etc. And the Torah is eternal – every Jew can relate to the secrets of Torah, and even the Divine Essence and Core.)3 excerpts from sichah of Thursday, Parashas Beshalach, 10 Shevat 5741 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=06-02-2025 לזכות רבקה בת שושנה שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה ט' שבט - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות*לזכות התמימים שיחיו דישיבת תות"ל 770 ההולכים מידי שבוע להשתתף בשיעורי של"ה - "מיטוואָך שעה"

וההוראה: גם בחושך הגלות, הנה ע"י "נר מצוה ותורה אור" הופכים את ה"מה" – ענין שאינו מובן – לחסד שנמשך למטה בכללות ישראל, ובהתיישבות – "ויחנו שם על המים", וכמו שהי' במצרים שעוד בהיותם במצרים במצב של "וימש חושך", הנה "לכל בנ"י הי' אור במושבותם" [המשך יבוא] משיחת יום ה' פ' בשלח, יו"ד שבט ה'תשמ"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=05-02-2025 Synopsis Chamishi of Parashas Beshalach begins, “They came to Eilim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms. They camped there by the water.” In Parashas Masei, on the verse, “They journeyed from Marah and arrived at Eilim,” the Magid explains that Eilimah (“to Eilim”) is comprised of the letters of the Divine Elokim (associated with Gevurah), but the letters take the form of “E-ili mah” – (“My G-d, what”) because the Divine Chessed is hidden and cannot be comprehended (“what”). And from “Marah” they “came” and entered the highest, hidden level of Chesed. The Tzemach Tzedek explains in Or HaTorah that the twelve springs of water correspond to the twelve Shevatim, while the seventy date palms correspond to the seventy souls that went down to Egypt, or the seventy elders – representing the entire Jewish people. The lesson is that even in the darkness of exile, through the “lamp of a mitzvah and light of Torah,” we transform the “what” – that which we cannot comprehend – into revealed expressed kindness below for the entire Jewish people, and in a settled fashion – “They encamped there by the water” – just like in Egypt, where, even when there was “tangible darkness,” nevertheless, “there was light for the all the Jewish people in their dwellings.” (To be continued.)Excerpt from sichah of Thursday, Parashas Beshalach, 10 Shevat 5741 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=05-02-2025

ב' חלקים משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תשי"ז ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=04-02-2025 Synopsis My father-in-law the Rebbe once told a story regarding the maamar of the Baal Shem Tov, with the additions of the Maggid etc., on the verse (in revi’i of Parashas Beshalach), “The sea reverted to its former strength,” and the teaching of our Sages, “ “Do not read it as ‘to its former strength (l’eisano)’ but as ‘to its condition (l’tna’o),’” because when Hashem created the sea, He stipulated with it that it would split for the Jewish people – the Baal Shem Tov explains that if the sea would not split, “the seas would not exist and would not have been created in this place, for they will cease to exist in creation etc.” Based on this, we can understand the expression of our Sages that the Tzaddikim “perform the will of the Omnipresent etc.” This also explains what Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair told the Ginai River, “Ginai, part your water for me” for I am going to do a mitzvah, and “If you do not part, I decree upon you that water will never flow through you again” – because Hashem stipulated with the created beings that they would fulfill the will of the Tzaddikim, even if it defies their nature etc. The lesson is that one must know that all the hiddenness and concealment in the world is subject to a condition since the Six Days of Creation that it must split for the sake of Torah and mitzvos. Just that for the actual splitting to occur, one must jump into the sea with mesiras-nefesh like Nachshon. And just like in the story of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair, the river split not only for him, but also for those accompanying him and even for his donkey – so, too, the hiddenness and concealment must split for us, regardless of our personal state, because we are accompanying the Nasi of the generation. Two excerpts from sichah of 10 Shevat 5717 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=04-02-2025

משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תשי"ב ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=03-02-2025 Synopsis When the Baal Shem Tov asked Moshiach, “When will the Master come?” the reply was, “When your wellsprings will spread outward.” This indicates that just like the Redemption, the wellsprings of Chassidus are for every single Jew. This was seen primarily in the Baal Shem Tov, who traveled from city to city and village to village telling simple people stories in which the wellsprings of Chassidus were concealed. Similarly, the Rebbe my father-in-law strove with all his strength to bring the teachings of Chassidus to every single Jew without distinction. But in his case, it was in such a way that the recipient openly felt that it was the inner dimension of the Torah, and he was able to grasp a small measure of its depth. This is alluded to in the verse in Parashas Beshalach, “The Jewish people were leaving triumphantly” (“b’reish glei” in the Targum), like the complete Redemption through Moshiach. B’reish glei is an acronym for (1) R’ Shimon ben Yochai, of whom it is said, “With this sefer of yours, which is the Sefer Hazohar, they will go out of exile with mercy”; (2) “R’ Yisrael Baal Shem” or “R’ Yisrael ben Sarah”; (3) “R’ Yosef Yitzchak ben Shterna Sarah” or “R’ Yosef Yitzchak ben Shalom Dov Ber.”Excerpt from sichah of Yud Shevat 5712 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=03-02-2025

משיחת י' שבט ה'תשל"ו ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=02-02-2025 Synopsis The beginning of Parashas Beshalach states, “When Pharaoh sent out the people…,” meaning there were Jews who didn’t want to leave Egypt, whom Pharaoh had to send out against their will. Since “On Rosh Hashana, the labor ceased from our forefathers in Egypt,” they preferred to remain in Egypt rather than venturing out into the desert and receiving the Torah etc. To the extent that at the time of the plague of the death of the firstborn, there were Jews in Egyptian homes, as Rashi say, meaning that even after nine plagues, which by now even when the Egyptians agreed were “the finger of G-d etc., and even after the Jewish people ate the Korban Pesach, these Jews insisted on remaining in the Egyptians’ homes, and still Hashem had mercy even on them, and Pharaoh forced them to leave Egypt. The reason the Torah tells us this – even though the Torah doesn’t even speak disparagingly of an animal – is because it has a practical takeaway: The Torah tells us that if there comes a time in the darkness of exile where there are Jews claiming that it’s better not to leave Egypt and that it’s better for “the house of Israel to be like all the nations” etc. –a Jew has no other choice – “He is our lawgiver,” and “He will save us and redeem us once more very soon,” and ultimately, “the Jewish people will leave triumphantly.”Excerpt from sichah of 10 Shevat 5736 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=02-02-2025

משיחת י"ט כסלו ה'תשכ"ח ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=31-01-2025 Synopsis The majority of the troubles and confusion in the world today stem from a disconnect between the mind and the heart. Although a person understands intellectually that he shouldn’t steal etc., “The eye sees and the heart desires,” and instead of the mind ruling over the heart so that the heart does the mind’s bidding, the heart rules over the mind – using the intellect to fulfill its desires. Though it begins with small things, it can lead to severe sins; when a person ends up lost in the depths of the forest, it starts with only a slight deviation from the right path. Thus, the solution for such a person is not to correct their external behavior or give them more external knowledge, but rather to reach the inner core of their soul (the inner intellect) – by telling them the truth: that they possess an “actual portion of Hashem from Above,” and they have the ability to behave properly and connect with Hashem Above. Only in this way can their intellect be redeemed from its exile within the desires of the heart. This is the idea of the mitzvah of Tefillin – to bind the heart and mind with the strap of holiness. Only in this way can one be turned into a baal teshuvah.Excerpt from sichah of 19 Kislev 5728. For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=31-01-2025

But upon the future redemption, when the Jewish people will be in a state where it is not necessary to flee, that will also be the state of the Shechinah and the state of the world. Moreover: the exile in Egypt was supposed to last four hundred years; therefore, had they not fled in haste, they would have gotten stuck there, whereas now, since “all the end-times have passed,” we can go “with tranquility and restfulness.” Accordingly, in Egypt, where they had four hundred years, every moment wasn’t as precious as it is now, when all the end-times have passed, and the “days without desire” can come immediately – so every moment must be cherished and filled with Torah and mitzvos. (2) The approach of Polish Chassidism was that the tzaddik is the one who “gives life” to those connected to him, whereas in the Chabad approach, everyone must toil on his own. But everyone is assisted by the Nasi, who establishes the form of service necessary for his generation.2 excerpts from farbrengen of 12 Tammuz 5718 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-01-2025 לע”נ ר' יואל זוסמאן ב"ר יצחק מנחם הכהן ענגעל ליום היארצייט שלו ר"ח שבט. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

משיחת י"א ניסן ה'תשכ"ב ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=29-01-2025 Synopsis (In connection with the mitzvah of Pidyon Haben at the end of Parashas Bo) – the end of Masechta Pesachim states: “Rabbi Simlai attended a Pidyon Haben. They asked him: it is obvious that…the blessing, “Who sanctified us with His mitzvos and commanded us regarding Pidyon Haben” is recited by the father of the son. Regarding [the bracha] shehechiyanu…does the Kohen recite it, as he benefits from [the money given for the Pidyon Haben], or does the father of the son recite it, as he is the one who performs the mitzva…And the halacha is that the father of the son recites both brachos.” In spiritual terms: Hashem “attends a Pidyon Haben” – the time has come for Him to redeem His firstborn son from exile. And it is obvious that the Redemption itself comes from the divine level of “Father,” which transcends seder hishtalshelus, because the mitzvah to redeem the son is His obligation, as it were. The question concerns the method of drawing down the redemption practically, within time and space (“Who has given us life, sustained us, and brought us to this time…”), through Moshiach who is a person of flesh and blood and “contemplates Torah” etc.: Will it come from the level of “Kohen” (the man of kindness), by way of seder histalshelus, and as a result it will happen “bit by bit” etc. or will this too come from the level of “Father,” which transcends seder histalshelus (being that the coming of Moshiach is also a mitzvah, and a “principle” of Torah and mitzvos), and as a result, “they will be redeemed immediately”? And the halacha is that the father of the son recites two blessings: The Redemption itself, as well as its practical expression below through Moshiach Tzidkeinu, will come from the level of “Father,” without the birth pangs of Moshiach and with open and revealed good very soon.Excerpt from sichah of 11 Nissan 5722. ב' חלקים משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תשי"ד ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-01-2025 Synopsis On the verse “When Pharaoh sent the people...,” Torah Or explains that Pharaoh himself sent the sparks of holiness along with the Jewish people when they left Egypt. The lesson is that a Jew’s every deed illuminates another part of this physical world, and thereby brings about the ultimate revelation with the coming of Moshiach. Therefore, one must view every moment of exile as a moment of preparation for Redemption. When one knows this, it becomes easier to cope with the hardships of exile. And the truth is that a Jew inherently transcends the whole existence of exile, and can perform his divine service without consideration at all of the limitations and constraints the exile imposes. As Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair told the Ginai River when it refused to split (claiming that doing so was not its purpose): “If you do not split… I decree upon you that no water shall ever flow through you again” – because the role of a Jew is higher than the role of the Ginai River. For this reason, the Tzaddikim of the generation demand things that defy nature, because a Jew is naturally higher than exile etc.2 excerpts from sichah of Yud Shevat 5714. This applies in one’s personal divine service as well as generally to the “Pharaoh” of our times”: the fact that “Pharaoh’s heart is hardened” is only because “I have hardened his heart,” and it is only a test, which one should confront firmly by following the light of Torah – “walking in the light of Your countenance.” Then, “Fortunate is the people that know the blasting of the horn,” the horn sounded in battle will instill fear and dread in the opposition etc.Excerpt from sichah of Motzaei Shabbos Parashas Va’eira, 5738 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=27-01-2025

He then adds: “Do not err and interpret the phrase ‘entities made to lend out or rent out’ as meaning ‘entities that are wont to be lent out or rented out’…”, before concluding at the end of the chapter: “This concept is a fundamental principle of law and a point of logic that may be relied upon in judgment. It is clear to those who give forth knowledge. It is appropriate for a judge to keep it in mind at all times and not to sway from it.” These four expressions represent four stages in comprehension: (1) “A fundamental principle of law” refers to one’s first impression of something, before he contemplates it. Meaning, it is obvious to him that this is a fundamental principle. (2) “A point of reason” refers to the next stage, his rational analysis of the matter, with arguments on both sides. (3) “It is clear to those who give forth knowledge” refers to his conclusion following the analysis, with the faculty of Daas. (4) “And not to sway from it” refers to the firmness of his conclusion, which is so strong that nothing can move him from it. By writing these four expressions, the Rambam is telling us that this law was so obvious to him that he didn’t have to find a source for it (which also resolves the question asked by the commentaries as to the Rambam’s source in the previous halacha).Excerpt from sichah of 7 Adar 5745 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=26-01-2025

That is how one reaches the inner aspect of Shabbos (which is discussed at the end of the essay), the level of Yisroel Saba – intellect that transcends emotions (higher than the level of Shabbos as it is drawn into the days of the week, which is intellect as it relates to emotions). This is the ascent to the level of the inner aspect of Atik – the level of Raava Draavin (which is followed by the “meal of King Dovid,” “the first redeemer who is also the final redeemer”).Excerpt from sichah of Motzaei Shabbos Parashas Shemos, 24 Teves 5723 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-01-2025 לזכות הת' דובער שי' יוניק ליום ההולדת שלו כ"ה טבת - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובותנדבת הוריו ר' דוד וזוגתו מרת חנה שיחיו יוניק

[המשך יבוא]משיחת מוצאי ש"ק פ' שמות, אור לכ"ד טבת ה'תשכ"ג, יום ההילולא של אדה"ז שנת הק"ן ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=23-01-2025 Synopsis The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch and Tanya demonstrate how devoted the Alter Rebbe was to education. The focus on education began with the Baal Shem Tov, who, at the age of eighteen (eighteen years before he revealed himself), proposed to the society of hidden tzaddikim to take responsibility for the Jewish education in all Jewish communities, and the Baal Shem Tov personally carried out this task by becoming a teacher’s assistant etc. Similarly, the Alter Rebbe devoted himself to education, as seen with the Tanya: The Alter Rebbe originally intended to begin the Tanya with Shaar HaYichud V'ha’Emunah, whose introduction is Chaoch L’naar – “Educate the child according to his way.” And this also applies practically to a Jew’s divine service: education is the starting point of one’s service with their own effort. My father-in-law the Rebbe adds here that Chassidus explains how education applies not only to children, but even adults (as we in fact see clearly). (This is also reflected in Nigleh (in Masechta Kiddushin), where we see that the concept of education really applies even beyond the age of chinuch, just that there’s no obligation, due to the concern that at a later age the person might not listen. ב' חלקים משיחת י' שבט ה'תשכ"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=22-01-2025 Synopsis On the verse (in today’s Tehillim, Kapitel 107), “Those who go down to the sea in ships (aniyos), who perform tasks in mighty waters,” the Baal Shem Tov explains that “those who go down to the sea” refers to the soul’s descent into this world (“mighty waters”). The soul descends within the body, which is an Aniyah, which has two meanings: the body can either function as an aniyah meaning a “ship,” protecting from the water, and moreover – enabling the soul to reach its destination of fulfilling its mission in this world. But alternatively, for some people the body functions as an aniyah in the sense of t’aniyah v’aniyah (“pain and lamenting”) – the person struggles because of the body. The next part of the verse, “who perform tasks in mighty waters” refers to those who assist “those who go down to the sea” so they do not drown. Thus, the verse addresses three types of Jews: (1) Those who manage on their own. (2) Those who don’t manage on their own. (3) Those who help others. The fact that all three appear in the same verse teaches us that all three categories apply to every Jew: Even one who manages on their own “ship” must also help others, and even one who doesn’t manage on their own can and must help others. Similarly, one who helps others and is preoccupied with “saving the world” must also take care of their own “ship,” by doing mitzvos and putting on tefillin etc., and ensuring the well-being of his own family and community within his ship (so they don’t make a hole in their part of the ship, which would endanger the whole ship…).2 excerpts from sichah of 10 Shevat 5725 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=22-01-2025

A person’s life is divided into four stages, corresponding to the four realms of inanimate matter, plant life, animal life, and human life: When a child is born, he is on the level of inanimate matter. When he begins to grow, he is on the level of plant life. When he begins to move about on his own, he is on the level of animal life. Then, when he becomes an adult, he reaches his fullest state, the level of the human being. We see that a person’s primary growth (plant life) occurs during childhood (it is not until the age of Bar or Bas Mitzvah that one becomes Biblically obligated to follow Torah and mitzvos, which are called “chayeinu” – corresponding to the level of chai/animal life). And this is the lesson for Jewish children from the third day of the week: Jewish children are the “plants” and “fruit trees” that grow from the “land of desire,” and Hashem gives every one of them the power to be a “seed-bearing plant” and “fruit-bearing tree” – “turning the hearts of the fathers back through the children”! Especially because “Our children are our guarantors” etc.Excerpt from sichah of Monday night, 12 Sivan 5740 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-01-2025 לע”נ הבחור אפרים אליעזר ב"ר מנחם ע"ה דבורקן ליום היארצייט שלו כ"א טבת. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

Therefore, this is the time to once again encourage the daily study of Rambam, especially three chapters per day, to finish the entire Mishneh Torah within (about) one year. May it be Hashem’s will that we very soon merit the fulfillment of the promise at the end of the Rambam that “The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know Hashem” and, “The world will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.” At that time, the entire world will see openly that (as it says at the beginning of the Rambam), “From the truth of His being, all existence comes into being.”2 excerpts from sichah of 20 Teves 5750 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=20-01-2025 לזכות ר' נפתלי ב"ר שלמה ע"ה אבן חיים ליום היארצייט שלו כ' טבת. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

ב' חלקים ממאמר ד"ה וארא אל אברהם וגו', מוצש"פ וארא ה'תשל"ח ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=19-01-2025 Synopsis A similar question to Moshe Rabbeinu’s question, “Why have You mistreated this people…since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has made things worse for this people…” can be asked nowadays: After all the open miracles and Hashgacha Pratis that everyone has seen in their own lives and in the lives of the Jewish people as a whole etc., and the abundance of spreading Nigleh and Chassidus, and after the revelation of the manuscripts that weren’t available in previous generations etc. – seemingly, this all should have inspired vigorous activity in Torah and mitzvos. So one might ask: why has Hashem done this, that the reality is otherwise? This question in turn can lead to doubts and a weakening in one’s divine service etc. But the response is like Hashem’s answer to Moshe (at the beginning of Parashas Va’eira), “I appeared to Avraham, etc.” – it is all in order to bring us to an even higher level. Like the analogy in Tanya of “a person davening with intent, and an idolater stands before him...and talks to him to distract him,” where one must not be affected or deterred by it at all. Rather, one should consider the fact that this itself comes from Hashem, “I have hardened his heart,” so that as a result, the Jew will reveal the abilities Hashem has given him to transform darkness into light. Similarly, it is Hashem Himself who placed His only son, every Jew, in the darkness of exile in this generation, which proves that He has given us the strength not to be affected by it, and on the contrary, to serve Hashem with the utmost perfection and to transform the darkness into light etc.2 excerpts from Maamar (k’ein sichah) Va’eira el Avraham, Motzaei Shabbos Parashas Va’eira 5738 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=19-01-2025 לזכות מרישה מרים בת חי' שרה שתחי' וויינבוים ליום הולדת שלה ח"י טבתלשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות‏*לע"נ מרת לאה בת ר' יעקב ע"ה ליום היארצייט שלה ח"י טבת. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

משיחת שמחת בית השואבה ה'תשי"ז ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=17-01-2025 Synopsis Our sages tell us that “The tribe of Levi was exempt from the hard labor” in Egypt, which is why Pharaoh told Moshe and Aharon [in shevi’i of Parashas Shemos], “Go to your burdens,” referring to their work of Torah study and teaching Torah to the Jewish people. He told them not to mix themselves into the lives of the rest of the Jewish people, who were required to act according to the laws and ways of the land. Although this argument might have some logical basis, and moreover, the decree from Above was that the slavery last four hundred years – but the truth is it was Pharaoh’s argument, and if they had accepted this argument, and the redemption had been delayed even like the blink of an eye, the Jewish people would have lost the redemption completely, because the Jewish people transcend the limits of human reason and the natural order, which is why the redemption came in a manner of “skipping to the end time” before the completion of the four hundred years. The lesson is that while a Jew might think it suffices to learn Torah and keep mitzvos himself; why should he care about what happens with others – one must know that this is Pharaoh’s argument. And just as everyone does everything necessary to save the physical life of a fellow Jew, how much more so when it comes to saving their spiritual life. And this must not be delayed even for one “blink of an eye,” because that moment can be the one that determines whether we remain in exile chas v’shalom, or whether Redemption comes.Excerpt from sichah of Simchas Beis Hashoevah 5717 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=17-01-2025 לזכות שיינא רוחמה בת שטערנא שרה שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה י"ז טבתלשנת ברכה והצלחה רבה ומופלגה בכל בגו"ר מתוך בריאות נכונה ומנוחת הנפש והגוףנדבת הורי' ר' חיים ברוך ושטערנא שרה שיחיו אלבסקי

משיחת י"א ניסן ה'תשל"ו ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=16-01-2025 Synopsis Before the Jewish people left Egypt, Hashem commanded (in chamishi of Parashas Shemos): “Every woman will request objects of silver and gold, and clothing, from her neighbor and from the woman in whose house she lodges….” The question is, being that Hashem provided all their needs in the desert, why did they need silver and gold? (If it was merely to fulfill the promise that “and afterward they will leave with great wealth,” why did He promise them great wealth in the first place?) The answer is that Hashem wanted the Jewish people to demonstrate that they would use their silver and gold to build a Mishkan for Him, and in the middle of the desert. The lesson is that even when living in an environment that’s like a jungle, one must stand firmly and proudly in their Yiddishkeit, and in a visible way. When a non-Jew asks why he closes his store for Shabbos, the Jew answers proudly that he believes that on Shabbos, “all your work is done.” If a certain amount of money is meant for him, Hashem will provide it either before Shabbos or after Shabbos; money earned through chilul Shabbos Rachmana litzlan does not belong to a Jew (and will ultimately go to doctors, chas v’shalom etc.) And although Hashem wants every Jew to be well-off even physically, the purpose is that he utilize these blessings for holiness. For example, Hashem grants him wealth so that he can serve as His shliach to give it to tzedakah.Excerpt from sichah of 11 Nissan 5736 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=16-01-2025

א' השיחות דהתוועדות אור לכ"ד טבת ה'תשכ"ג ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=15-01-2025 Synopsis On the verse, “Moshe was tending the flocks” (in revi’i of Parashas Shemos), the Midrash states that there was a kid goat that ran away from Moshe’s flock, and when Moshe ran after it to make sure it had water and food etc., the goat led him to Har Sinai. It was because of this that “An angel of Hashem appeared to him in the flame of fire from the midst of the thornbush….” The lesson is that to merit the revelation of Hashem “in the midst of the thornbush” – within the physicality of the world – one must specifically devote himself to the “flock of Hashem,” the Jewish people. This is like the story of the Tzemach Tzedek: after the histalkus of the Alter Rebbe, there was a period when the Alter Rebbe didn’t reveal himself to the Tzemach Tzedek etc.; it was only after the Tzemach Tzedek went out of his way (before davening) one day to help a butcher with a loan so he could buy a calf etc., that the Alter Rebbe again revealed himself. Some parts of Torah can be reached through toiling in Torah (where worrying about someone’s physical needs can be a distraction), and “if you toil you will find success” – the level of a found object. But to reach the highest levels in Torah, the level of the “gift” of Torah, which is even higher than “finding” – that comes specifically by “benefitting Him” – by worrying about Hashem’s children’s needs.Sichah from farbrengen of 24 Teves 5723 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=15-01-2025

And this is how they will receive sustenance, because the Nile is the sustenance for non-Jews, whereas a Jew’s sustenance comes only through “cleaving to Hashem your G-d” – following Hashem’s path, and then you will be “alive” – “The One who provides life provides sustenance.”Excerpt from sichah of 10 Shevat 5718 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=14-01-2025 לעילוי נשמתהילד חייל בצבאות ה' שלום דובער ע"ה בן – יבלחט"א – ר' זלמן יוסף הלוי שליט"א ליום היארצייט שלו י"ד טבתתנצב"ה

Regarding Yisro, who spoke against the decree that “Every boy that is born you shall cast into the river,” a “big question” arises: among the three advisors, Bilaam voted in favor of the decree, and Iyov was silent, leaving Yisro in the minority – meaning that he wouldn’t be able to annul the decree in any case. If so, why did he vote against the decree, forcing himself to flee, and effectively abandoning the Jewish people in Egypt? Wouldn’t it have been better for him to vote in favor of the decree (or at least to remain silent), so that at least he could remain “Pharaoh’s advisor” and be able to ensure that the girls could receive a kosher education and live Jewish lives? The answer is that Yisro, who was a non-Jew but an upright person, spoke the truth, even though he knew it wouldn’t change the decree and that he would have to flee. The lesson is that when someone is a member of a community council and the like, and it is suggested that he should compromise on one part of the Torah so that he can at least remain in his position as “Pharaoh’s advisor,” there are three possible responses: (1) to give Pharaoh advice that ultimately ruins Egypt, out of fear of starting up with Pharaoh; (2) to remain silent, out of fear of starting up with anyone; (3) to compromise, in the belief that since he can’t save the boys anyway, at least he should retain his position so that he can save the girls. The Torah says that an advisor is obligated to speak the truth of the Torah, without getting entangled in calculations that are contrary to the Torah. He must know that “relief and salvation will arise for the Jews,” and he simply has the privilege that it might come through him.Excerpt from sichah of Motzaei Purim 5731 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=13-01-2025 לזכות רחל ברכה בת שושנה שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה י"ג טבת - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

[המשך יבוא]ב' חלקים משיחת מוצאי פורים ה'תשל"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=12-01-2025 Synopsis Regarding the verse (at the beginning of Parashas Shemos), “Come, let us deal wisely with them…”, the Gemara says in Sotah, “Three were involved in that counsel, Bilam, Iyov, and Yisro. Bilam, who advised [to kill all sons born to the Jewish people], was killed. Iyov, who was silent, was punished with suffering. Yisro, who fled (because he spoke against Pharaoh), merited that his descendants sat in the Lishkas HaGazis.” It could be said as a “Purim-Torah” [apparently in connection with the recent vote in the Knesset regarding the Law of Return] that seemingly, there’s a defense for Bilam in that his obligation as Pharaoh’s adviser was to tell him what was in Egypt’s best interest, not what was in the Jews’ best interest. But since he was one who “knew the vision of G-d,” and understood that “One who touches them is like one who touches the apple of His eye,” he knew that ultimately, the decree was not in Egypt’s best interest. Therefore, he should have told Pharaoh not to pass the decree, but he didn’t want to provoke the king. Similarly, regarding Iyov: The charge against him isn’t that he didn’t try to annul the decree, but the fact that he was silent. This, too, seems to have a defense – why should he express an opinion on the matter and thereby raise the ire of one side? Better to remain silent and make both sides happy, so that everyone thinks he is their friend! But the Torah says that the fact that he remained silent is even worse than failing to try and stop the decree – why were you silent?! By Divine Providence you were appointed as an adviser – so state your opinion! ב' חלקים משיחת יום ה' פ' ויחי, עשרה בטבת – יהפך לשמחה – ה'תשמ"ה, בבית הכנסת, לאחרי תפלת מנחה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=10-01-2025 Synopsis The custom of giving “words of reproof” on a fast day is connected to the fact that a fast day is “among the ways of repentance,” which must be done in a manner that impacts not only oneself, but others and the entire community as well. The unique significance of Asarah B’Teves is expressed in the verse, “The king of Bavel has laid siege to Yerushalayim on this very day” – the same expression used in connection with Yom Kippur, emphasizing the day’s connection to “the essence of the day,” of Yom Kippur (from which we derive that if Asarah B’Teves were to fall on Shabbos, we would fast on Shabbos just like we do when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos). The reason that Asarah B’Teves is unique in this way can be understood simply: because the entire sequence of events leading to all four fasts began with siege on Asarah B’Teves (with the hope that the siege would awaken the people to do teshuvah, thereby preventing the subsequent events). Even the simplest person understands how important it is to stop a problem at the beginning, and that if you don’t, the beginning already encompasses all the consequences that naturally result from it. Conversely, from this we also understand the greatness of Asarah B’Teves being nullified and transformed from exile to redemption.2 excerpts from sichah of Thursday, Parashas Vayechi 5745, after Mincha For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=10-01-2025 לעילוי נשמת ר' מתתיהו ב"ר יצחק יעקב ע"ה, נפטר י"א טבת ה'תשמ"ח.

This can be compared to someone who changes his clothing from silver to gold: in the interim, before putting on the new clothing, he is lacking, but when he puts on the new clothing, he has gained. Similarly, Yaakov’s life was his soul, with which he fulfilled his mission in this world of establishing the Jewish people, while his body was merely a garment for and secondary to his soul. Therefore, while it’s true that when his body (the garment) departed from this world it was embalmed etc., because in the interim he wasn’t able to fulfill his mission, but afterwards, when “his seed is alive” – which is the pinnacle of the service of Yaakov’s life –the result is that he is alive.3 excerpts from sichah of 10 Shevat 5723 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=09-01-2025

In terms of divine service: When a person is completely nullified, their service transcends the limitations of the natural order. Therefore, when one is called upon to perform a service like spreading the wellsprings, and in a manner that is beyond the natural order, there is no need to fear the “evil eye,” because “We are from the descendants of Yosef, upon whom the evil eye has no power.” And after the challenges experienced by “Yosef” and “his descendants” – it is certain that “as they afflicted them, so they will increase and so they will spread” – “they will multiply abundantly like fish” in material matters, as well is the activities to which Yosef invested himself – spreading Yiddishkeit and spreading the wellsprings.Excerpt from sichah of Wednesday night, Parashas Chayei Sarah, 20 MarCheshvan, 5744 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=08-01-2025 לע"נ מרת רבקה רחל בת ר' חיים דוב ע"ה שנור ליום היארצייט שלה ח' שבט. ת.נ.צ.ב.

ב' חלקים משיחת פורים ה'תשכ"ח ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=07-01-2025 Synopsis The Alter Rebbe writes in todays’ Tanya that since “from every food and drink [a person eats for the sake of enjoyment] it immediately becomes blood and flesh like his flesh, therefore the body requires chibut hakever to cleanse and purify it from the impurity it absorbed through the enjoyment of this world…except for one who did not derive enjoyment from this world all his days, like Rabbeinu HaKadosh.” The reason the Alter Rebbe adds the words “like Rabbeinu HaKadosh” can be understood from the Alter Rebbe’s choice of words, “one who did not derive enjoyment from this world all his days” (and not “one who did not eat”): this indicates that it’s possible for someone to eat, yet not to derive enjoyment from this world. As an example, the Alter Rebbe mentions Rabbeinu HaKadosh, of whom the Gemara says, “At the time of Rabbeinu HaKadosh’s passing, he raised his ten fingers toward Heaven and said, ‘Master of the Universe…I did not derive any benefit even with my small finger.’” Tosafos asks: this appears to contradict the Gemara’s statement that Rabbeinu HaKadosh and Antoninus were so wealthy “that radishes and lettuce never ceased from their table”? Tosafos answers that he didn’t personally eat them; rather, “there were many eating from his table.” But seemingly, doesn’t one derive tremendous enjoyment from the very fact that so many people are eating such luxurious food from his table? But this is the point: Rabbeinu HaKadosh didn’t derive enjoyment even from that. We learn from here that even if one does eat luxuries like radish and lettuce, that are unavailable anywhere else in the world – if he doesn’t derive enjoyment from them, he is exempt from chibut hakever.2 excerpts from sichah of Purim 5728 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=07-01-2025 לזכות ר' ארי'ה בן לאה אורית שי' ליום ההולדת שלו ז' טבת - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובותולע"נ ר' יעקב ב"ר שמואל ע"ה ליום היארצייט שלו ז' טבת. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

כמה חלקים מהתוועדות יום ג' פ' תשא, פורים ה'תשל"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=06-01-2025 Synopsis Great is the merit of the tankistim and fortunate is their lot. While some criticize and argue that it would be better for them to engage in Torah and tefillah etc., and question why they involve themselves in seeking out baalei teshuvah and putting tefillin on another Jew, etc. – the answer is that we are dealing with saving the nefesh and neshamah of another Jew! But in the case of yeshiva students, they must consult the yeshiva administration on whether to devote their free time (outside the yeshiva schedule) for personal growth, or for this task of saving the lives of others. If one is instructed to use his time to be a tankist, he should do so with joy, and understand that this is precisely where he will find his fulfillment. I express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who participated in Mivtza Purim and all those involved in all the Mivtzoim, especially the Shabbos Candles Campaign (which also carries a segulah for long life). When a Jewish girl is born, we bless her to be “like Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah”; we know that Sarah’s candle would burn from one Erev Shabbos to the next, and the same applies to the Shabbos candle lit by every Jewish girl: it burns spiritually and illuminates the entire home until the next Erev Shabbos, when a new candle is lit.3 excerpts from farbrengen of Tuesday, Parashas Ki Sisa, Purim 5735 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=06-01-2025

Especially because these are sefarim containing the Torah’s wisdom, where every sefer enhances and adds to the knowledge acquired from all the other sefarim until now. This relates to the Zohar’s statement (at the beginning of Parashas Vayigash) that “And Judah approached him” represents “juxtaposing redemption (Yosef) to tefillah (Yehudah)” etc.Sichah of 5 Teves 5752. And it says, “he sent” – one must “send” himself, going beyond his nature and habits etc., “to Yosef” (“Yehudah approached him” – “juxtaposing redemption to tefillah) – the service of tefillah; “to show the way” (to “prepare a house of study for him”) – Torah study; and culminating with, “And Yaakov blessed Pharaoh” – meaning that even during exile, it becomes openly recognized that the vitality and sustenance of the entire world comes about in the merit of a Jew. This also alludes to what we’ve been emphasizing recently, that everyone should transform their own home into a house of Torah, tefillah, and gemilus chassadim etc.3 excerpts from sichah of Thursday night, Parashas Vayigash, 8 Teves 5747. כמה חלקים מהתוועדות יום ב' פ' ויגש, מוצאי זאת חנוכה ה'תשל"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=02-01-2025 Synopsis Although every mitzvah is a “lamp” (a “lamp is a mitzvah”), some mitzvos express it physically as well, such as the lamps of the Beis Hamikdash, Shabbos candles, the candles lit in a shul, and above all, the mitzvah of Chanukah candles, which is associated with a miracle that transcends nature, and upon which we recite the bracha, “…Who performed miracles for our forefathers,” and in a manner of publicizing the miracle. That is, although we must use a physical candle, it contains a miracle, and in a revealed fashion (Shehechiyanu is only recited over something visible). The lesson for the entire year: even when a Jew lives according to the ways of nature and engages with worldly matters, there is a miracle embedded within nature; as the Rebbe Maharash writes, parnassah these days is miraculous, akin to the man that sustained the Jewish people in the desert. The same applies to spiritual sustenance – the battle against the yetzer hara; therefore one can be certain that he will succeed in the battle. Yosef said to his brothers (at the end of sheini of Parashas Vayigash), “It was for sustenance that Hashem sent me before you… and to preserve for you for a great deliverance”: during exile, every Jew is like Yosef, whose mission is to “keep a great populace alive” – the entire Jewish people, and as the Rambam states as a matter of law, every individual must view himself as though he and the entire world are equally balanced, and through one single deed, he can bring “salvation and deliverance” for himself and the entire world.Excerpts from farbrengen of Monday, Parashas Vayigash, Motzaei Zos Chanukah 5735 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=02-01-2025

משיחת פורים ה'תש"כ ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=01-01-2025 Synopsis Not only the emotions in the heart, but also intellect, must be connected to the source of truth and goodness, which is Hashem. Because when the source of intellect is not in holiness, one cannot rely that the intellect itself will be an appropriate guide, as we see in the case of Greek wisdom: although it was considered close to the realm of holiness, the Greeks are nonetheless referred to as “impure,” “wicked,” and “wanton sinners,” and as we know, they were particularly corrupt and inhumane ways. The reason is because even if something accords with the principles of logic and reason etc., those principles established by man himself. Therefore, the intellect must be based in the Torah of Truth. And this is the theme of Chanukah – the Jewish people were saved from Greek wisdom, which posed the danger of becoming “impure” etc. And this is also the meaning of our Sages’ statement, “‘Light’ refers to Torah”: Torah is not just intellect and wisdom, rather, it is a hora’ah (instruction) to guide a person to true life.Excerpt from sichah of Purim 5720 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=01-01-2025 לע”נ רחל בת ר' מרדכי הירש ע"ה ליום היארצייט שלה א' טבת. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

When the Greeks entered the Heichal (in the days of Mattisyahu ben Yochanan), she was kicking with her sandal on the Mizbeach and said: ‘Wolf, wolf! Until when will you consume the property of the Jewish people, and yet you do not stand with them when they face exigent circumstances?’ When the Sages heard about this, they fixed the ring [of all the mishmaros] and sealed its niche…” because of the principle, “Woe unto the wicked, woe unto his neighbor. Good for the righteous, good for his neighbor.” The fact that the Torah tells us her name, and derives specifically from her the principle of “Good for the righteous, good for his neighbor,” demonstrates the greatness of the Jewish people: (1) Although the Jewish people were suffering severe persecution, she was the only one among the daughters of the Jewish people who strayed. (2) Despite having “renounced her faith” and “married a soldier,” she is held accountable (even) for kicking the Mizbeach with her sandal. It can be said that this is the source of the Rambam’s statement in Iggeres Teiman, that although Yeravam ben Nevat was “a sinner who caused the Jewish people to sin,” he was still held accountable even for failing to keep eruv tavshilin. From this we see how cherished every Jew is, even one who sins and causes others to sin – every detail of their behavior matters to Hashem Himself! Moreover: What pained this Jewish girl, who “renounced her faith and married a Greek soldier? – she was bothered that the Mizbeach wasn’t protecting the Jews in their time of distress.Excerpt from sichah of 6 Tishrei 5735 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=31-12-2024

ב' חלקים משיחת ליל נר ג' דחנוכה, ה'תשי"ד ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-12-2024 Synopsis It says in sefarim that Chanukah comes from the word chinuch. Chinuch (which also means education) means to initiate and train; when you “Educate the child to child according to his way,” that ensures that “even when he grows old, he will not depart from it,” and he will be able to withstand the challenges and trials he will face for the rest of his life. But this must begin early, when he is “a child.” This is why our Sages invested so much effort into Jewish education, to imbue Jewish boys and girls with purity and holiness, equipping them with the tools to fight all opposition and to not compromise on any detail. As the battle against Yiddishkeit intensifies, we must strengthen the fight – and fight with mesiras-nefesh even over what might otherwise seem like something minor. During ordinary times, such issues might not have warranted fighting over, but in these circumstances, it is possible that this “strand of hair” is the one the Sages referred to, from which the entire existence of the yetzer hara grows. This is particularly critical when it comes to educating the youth, because education is like planting a tree: even a tiny scratch on the seed can end up impairing the whole tree when it gets bigger, chas v’shalom. We now see that the path of compromise has led to many young people leaving the path, Rachmana litzlan; therefore it is a sacred duty not to yield even to the slightest degree, and to strengthen pure Jewish education.2 excerpts from sichah of the third night of Chanukah 5714 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-12-2024

(Beis Shamai focuses on the potential: on the first night one has in mind and decides everything for all the “days to come”; in contrast to Beis Hillel etc.). Chanukah is an acronym for ח' נרות והלכה כבית הלל (“Eight candles and the halacha follows Beis Hillel”). And this is the unique feature of the fifth candle of Chanukah: it is the first night that more candles are lit according to Beis Hillel than according to Beis Shamai, meaning it is visible to the physical eye, and even the gentiles can see, that there is more light in this physical world. When going out on mivtza Chanukah – Jews should be reminded that their soul never went into exile.Excerpt from sichah of the fifth candle of Chanukah 5740 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=29-12-2024 לזכות יהודית בת פריידא שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה כ"ח כסלו - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

(2) The fact that Hashem goes into exile with the Jewish people – “I am with him in distress” – is yet another reason for Hashem to bring the Redemption, when He will take Himself along with every Jew out of exile. (3) Very soon the newspapers should be able to publish the news that not only is Moshiach on his way, and not only is he very near, but that he is about to open up the door to this shul and beis midrash where the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Nasi of our generation, learned and davened and did mitzvos etc.Excerpt from sichah of Tuesday, 26 Kislev 5752, after Menorah lighting For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=27-12-2024

מרובה מחבירו"‏ – ‏בזה מתבאר הצורך לחומרות וסייגים חדשים כל הזמן, כי מכיון שהחושך מתגבר כל הזמן אא"פ להסתפק עם ה"כלים" והאור שבהם נלחמו בחושך דאתמול!‏ב' חלקים משיחת י"ט כסלו ה'תשל"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=26-12-2024 Synopsis The connection between Chanukah and Yud-Tes Kislev: Shabbos candles are for the purpose of shalom bayis – peace inside the home. Similarly, the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash primarily illuminated the inside (although the windows in the Beis Hamikdash were “narrow on the inside and wide on the outside,” allowing the light to spread to the outside as well). But Chanukah candles are lit specifically “at the entrance to one’s house on the outside.” This parallels the spreading of the wellsprings of Chassidus outward, which began primarily after the liberation of Yud-Tes Kislev. The fact that Chanukah candles are lit specifically “from sunset” is because before dark, the candles aren’t needed. This is the meaning of the Gemara’s statement that before Moshiach comes, “there will be no day whose troubles are not greater than the day before” – the Gemara is explaining why, as time goes one, we need new stringencies and safeguards: since the darkness continually intensifies, you can’t suffice with yesterday’s degree of light to combat today’s darkness.2 excerpts from sichah of 19 Kislev 5731 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=26-12-2024 לזכות רפאל יהודה בן ברורי' גיטל שי' טענענבוים ליום ההולדת שלו כ"ה כסלו - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות
