When the chassidim discovered this, the Alter Rebbe forbade them from causing the man any trouble, and finished the cup of tea the man had prepared for him [on the night of 20 Kislev]. As our Sages said, “One who gestures before the king etc.”, meaning, when one stands before the King, even a slight movement is considered rebellion against the throne, Rachmana litzlan. When Hashem shows closeness to “a commoner who is despised and lowly among men, a disgraceful creature cast on the dunghill,” the effect is two-fold: (a) from the receiver’s perspective, he feels humbler, and (b) from Heaven’s perspective, the greater Divine revelation diminishes the ability for any independent entity to exist. This is similar to the reason labor is forbidden on Shabbos, though it is a mitzvah during the week – because on Shabbos (a) there’s a greater Divine revelation, which nullifies independent existence, and (b) the world recognizes its own lowliness. This is also why we say “Pardon us…for we have sinned” specifically in Shemoneh Esrei – because it is precisely when one stands before the King that he realizes that what was previously acceptable is considered sin. But it all pertains to the revealed aspect of the person (“land”), and ultimately, it doesn’t render him completely nullified; he remains an “entity who loves.” (2) Then there’s another effect of studying Chassidus, that it renders a person completely nullified, he’s completely “covered” by his life-force – G-dliness (like fish are covered by the sea. For this, it’s not enough to study Nigleh (where it’s possible to forget the Giver of the Torah, chas v’shalom), rather, one must study Chassidus in abundance, to “know the G-d of your father.” And since this aspect of studying Chassidus isn’t absolutely indispensable to one’s practical service, it is like “pearls” which are merely an adornment, and which one can do without. However, that applies only when one is in his own four cubits. By contrast, when he’s about to go to the king’s palace, he must prepare himself accordingly, including with pearls! Seemingly, then, what is the benefit of breaking down such a building? The answer is that the “building” here means the “middle path”, which is the proper path according to Torah; nevertheless, in the time of exile we must “break it down” – by going beyond all limitations, including the boundaries within holiness. And this is the basic point of the Maamar Basi L’gani 5710: to be victorious over the shtus of le’umas zeh and the doubled and redoubled darkness of exile – it’s not enough to follow the middle path (a holy “building”). Rather, we must adopt the path of shtus of holiness. The lesson is: Torah study and mitzvos must be in a manner of U’paratzta – without limits! Even if one helped this Jew uncover his vitality and passion, and the person claims, “the water is ours” – he uses it for the “Pelishtim”, and even this happens a second time, and logic seemingly dictates that there’s no reason to continue working with him – nevertheless, one must not give up. Rather, he must continue working with him, without being limited by intellect, because Yitzchak, and likewise every Jew, “is born from a holy drop,” and is connected to Hashem with a bond that transcends measure and limitation! In terms of man’s Divine service: a person draws life by connecting to Hashem through His Torah and mitzvos, as it says, “You who cleave to Hashem your G-d are alive, all of you this day.” Thus, when Torah and mitzvos are lacking, one lacks life, too, chas v’shalom. The solution is teshuvah – renewing the bond with Hashem. A Jew is inherently alive, but must descend to this world, which is like “entering a tent covering a corpse”, especially during the exile. There were those who “laughed,” saying that at the ages of one hundred and ninety, Avraham and Sarah couldn’t possibly have a child, but in the end Yitzchak was born. Similarly, when the Rebe arrived in the United States and established Shaloh, for Jewish public school children to have the opportunity to learn about Yiddishkeit, some people “laughed,” arguing that nothing would come of it because this country already has an established system that’s ninety or a hundred years old etc., and that even if you get a Jewish child involved temporarily, it won’t last, and the eventually the ways of the land will erase it. But ultimately, this program resulted in tens of thousands of observant Jews! Similarly, Og, king of Bashan claimed that he could wipe away Yitzchak with one finger, but in the end Og fell into the hands of Yitzchak’s descendants. But we must know that this is a “mitzvah applicable to the body”: in order for one’s body to become more refined etc., he must go against his nature, by gathering Jewish children to teach them Alef-Beis – just like the Tzemach Tzedek, who personally took the time every month to engage in the education of young children! And even if until now one was busy with mesiras-nefesh and contemplating the Divine oneness, he must know that there’s an even greater service – to go to the “outside” and gather children and teach them that Hashem runs the world! This is the connection between the Gemara’s statement that “sason refers to milah” – because the joy (“they accepted it upon themselves with joy”) of a bris milah (Parashas Lech Lecha) is hidden, since the baby experiences pain and the father sees “his son’s blood being spilled.” Similarly, in the era when “we are still servants to Achashverosh,” there is pain in the world, to the extent that we can only experience hidden joy – sason – and even that is difficult to attain. This divide already began in the time of Avraham Avinu, as it says in [shelishi of] Parashas Lech Lecha, “Lot traveled…and they parted from one another,” which eventually resulted in the divide between the Jewish people and Lot’s descendants Amon and Moav. The fact that it was specifically “after Lot parted from him” that the Divine Presence was revealed to Avraham (a soul in a body), indicates that this is the sort of divide that has a valid place, and that it even has an effect on heaven and earth being connected (a level even higher than heaven and earth themselves). And even regarding this kind separation our Sages said that “offering food is a great thing”! It is called “great” because this ability to bridge even a divide at such a lofty level comes from a place that transcends seder hishtalshelus. And if “food” offered by a non-Jew (who are inherently separate) can have such a great effect, we can understand that “food” shared among Jews, who are inherently connected certainly has a lofty effect, causing those lofty levels to be revealed. The lesson is: Anything that comes first must be sanctified to Hashem. For example, a Jew must begin the day with something holy; therefore, the first thing he thinks and says upon waking up is Modeh Ani etc. Moreover, the place in which one sanctifies the “firstborn” must be turned into a holy place – “Yerushalayim” – for example, the room in which he says Modeh Ani should become a holy place. Though there is a version of the Midrash stating like the Rambam that he was forty, why did the Rambam specifically choose that version? Moreover: in Or HaTorah, the Tzemach Tzedek discusses and resolves the apparent contradiction between the Gemara and the Midrash, but he doesn’t mention the Rambam’s opinion (age forty)?! We can explain that Rambam learns that the Gemara is talking about the beginning of Avraham’s journey, so it says he was three years old. And this is the difference between Eretz Yisrael and Bavel: Eretz Yisrael is inherently holy, and therefore it contains stones – “stones of iron.” By contrast, Bavel, in the diaspora, is a “valley,” an “open place”; when we you look at it with physical eyes, you don’t see the “fence” of Torah and mitzvos. In order for the conduct in Bavel to accord with Hashem’s will, work and toil are necessary, and when “you will labor,” then “you will find success” – “the bricks will be to them for stones.” And this is done by taking clay, dust from the ground, forming it, and burning it in a furnace, until it becomes a new entity. The answer is based on the dictum of our Sages, “Be as meticulous in a minor mitzva as a major one”: The mitzvos express Hashem’s desire, which cannot be divided into “minor” and “major”; one who transgresses any mitzvah, even a minor Rabbinic requirement, transgresses Hashem’s will chas v’shalom! Moreover, the very thought of trying to use human intellect to discern which aspects of Torah and mitzvos one ought to engage in is odd to begin with. (2) The covenant with Avraham, the Bris Bein Habesarim, which had to do with Torah and mitzvos. (3) The covenant with Moshe Rabbeinu (“behold I make a covenant”) regarding teshuvah.
